1 The famine was severe in the land.

2 And it was, when they had finished eating the rations that they had brought from Egypt, that their father said to them, "Return, buy rations for us, a little food."
2 Now it came to be, at the time when they had completed devouring the grain that they had brought from Egypt, and their father said to them, "Again, having gone, purchase for us small foods."2
2 When they had finished eating the grain they had brought from Egypt, their father said to them, "Go back and buy us a little food."

3 And Judah said to him, saying, "Witnessing, the man witnessed1 against us, saying, 'You shall not see my face except your brother is with you.'
3 Now Judah said to him, saying, "With solemn testimony the human has solemnly testified to us, saying, 'You shall not see my face unless your younger brother comes down to me.'3
3 But Judah said to him, "The man solemnly testified against us: 'You will not see my face unless your brother is with you.'

4 If you are sending our brother with us, we will go down and buy rations for you, food.
4 If then, on the one hand, you are sending our brother with us, we will go down and buy for you foods;4
4 If you will send our brother with us, we will go down and buy food for you.

5 but if, on the other hand, you are not sending our brother with us, we will not go; for the human said to us, saying, 'You shall not see my face unless your younger brother is with you.'"5
5 But if you will not send him, we will not go down, because the man said to us, 'You will not see my face unless your brother is with you.'"

6 And Israel said, "Why did you do bad to me, telling the man whether you had still a brother?"
6 Now Israel said, "Why did you do bad to me, announcing to the human whether there is to you‸ a brother?"6
6 Israel said, "Why did you do me this wrong by telling the man that you had another brother?"

7 And they said, "Asking, the man asked about us and about our birth, saying, 'Is your father still living? Is there to you a brother?' And we told him according to the mouth of these words. Knowing, could we know that he would say, 'Bring down your brother'?"
7 But they said, "Asking, the human questioned us and our generation, saying, 'Is your father still living? Is there to you a brother?' And we reported to him according to his questioning. Did we know that he would say to us, 'Lead your brother'?"7
7 They said, "The man kept asking about us and our family. He asked, 'Is your father still alive? Do you have another brother?' We answered his questions. How could we possibly know that he would say, 'Bring your brother down'?"

8 And Judah said to Israel his father, "Send the lad with me, and let us rise and go, and let us live and not die, both we and you and our little ones.
8 Now Judah said to Israel his father, "Send the lad with me, and having risen, we will go, so that we may live and not die, both we and you and our baggage.8
8 Then Judah said to his father Israel, "Send the boy with me, and let us get up and go. Then we will live and not die, we and you and our little ones.

9 I, I will pledge2 myself for him; from my hand you shall seek him. If I do not bring him to you and position him before your face, then I shall have sinned against you all the days.
9 But I take charge of him; from my hand seek him. If I do not lead him to you and make him stand before you, then I shall have sinned against you all the days.9

11 And Israel their father said to them, "If thus, therefore, this do: take of the renown4 of the land in your articles, and bring down to the man a gift: a little balm and a little honey, gum and ladanum, pistachios and almonds5.
11 Now Israel their father said to them, "If thus it is, this do: take of the fruits of the land in your containers, and bring down to the human gifts:‸ of the resin and‸ of the honey, incense and stacte, terebinth and nuts.10
11 Their father Israel said to them, "If that is how it is, then do this. Take some of the land's famous produce in your containers, and take it down to the man as a gift. Take a little balm and a little honey, gum and resin, pistachio nuts and almonds.

12 And double silver take in your hand, and the silver that was returned in the mouth of your packs, return in your hand; perhaps it was a mistake.
12 And twofold silver take in your hands; the silver that was turned back in‸ your bags, turn back with you; perhaps it is a mistake.11
12 Take double the money with you, and take back the money that was returned in the mouths of your packs. Perhaps it was a mistake.

13 And your brother take, and rise, return to the man.
13 And your brother take, and, having risen, go down to the human.
13 Take your brother too, and get up and go back to the man.

14 And El Shaddai give you mercy6 before the face of the man, and may he send away to you your other brother, and Benjamin. And I, as I am bereaved, I am bereaved7."
14 Now my God give you grace before the human, and may he send‸ your brother, the one, and Benjamin. For I, even as I have been made childless, I have been made childless."12
14 May El Shaddai give you mercy before the man, and may the man release your other brother and Benjamin to you. As for me, if I am bereaved, I am bereaved."

15 And the men took this gift, and double silver they took in their hand, and Benjamin; and they rose and went down to Egypt and stood before the face of Joseph.
15 Now the men took these gifts, and the double silver they took in their hands, and Benjamin; and, having risen, they went down to Egypt and stood before Joseph.
15 So the men took this gift, and they took double the money with them, and Benjamin. They got up and went down to Egypt and stood before Joseph.

16 And Joseph saw Benjamin with them, and he said to the one who was over his house8, "Bring the men into the house, and butcher a butchering, and fix9 it, for with me the men shall eat at noon."
16 Now Joseph saw them and Benjamin, his brother of the same mother, and he commanded the one over his house to bring in the humans into the house: "And slay victims and prepare, for with me the humans shall eat loaves at noon."13
16 When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the man in charge of his house, "Bring the men into the house. Slaughter an animal and prepare it, because the men will eat with me at noon."

17 And the man did as Joseph said, and the man brought the men into the house of Joseph.
17 Now the human did even as Joseph said, and brought in‸ the humans into the house of Joseph.
17 The man did as Joseph said, and he brought the men into Joseph's house.

18 And the men feared, because they had been brought to the house of Joseph, and they said, "On the word of the silver that was returned in our packs at the start we are being brought, to roll himself10 upon us and fall upon us, and to take us for slaves, and our donkeys."
18 Now the humans, having seen that they had been carried into the house of Joseph, said, "On account of the silver that was turned back in our bags at the beginning we are being brought in, to falsely accuse us and to lay on us, to take us for servants, and our donkeys."14
18 The men were afraid because they had been brought into Joseph's house. They said, "We are being brought in because of the money that was put back in our packs the first time. He wants to roll over us and fall on us, and take us as slaves, along with our donkeys."

19 And they approached the man who was over the house of Joseph and spoke to him at the doorway of the house,
19 Now, having approached the human who was over the house of Joseph, they spoke to him in the gateway of the house,
19 So they went up to the man in charge of Joseph's house and spoke to him at the doorway of the house.

20 and they said, "Oh, my lord, going down we went down at the start to buy rations of food.
20 They said, "Please, my lord, we did come down the first time to buy food.

21 And it was, when we came to the lodging, and we opened our packs, and look, each man's silver was in the mouth of his pack, our silver in its weight. And we have returned it in our hand.
21 and it came to be, at the time when we came to lodge, and we opened our bags, and this: the silver of each in‸ his bag. Our silver by weighing we have turned back now in our bags,16
21 But when we came to the place where we stopped for the night and opened our packs, there was each man's money in the mouth of his pack, our money in its full weight. So we have brought it back with us.

23 And he said, "Peace to you; do not fear. Your Elohim and the Elohim11 of your father has given you a cache in your packs; your silver came to me." And he brought out Simeon to them.
23 Now the human said to them, "Propitious to you; do not fear. Your God and the God of your fathers has given you treasures in your bags; but your silver, proving good, I have in full." And he brought out Simeon to them.17
23 The steward said, "Peace to you. Do not be afraid. Your God and the God of your father has given you a hidden treasure in your packs. I received your money." Then he brought Simeon out to them.

24 And the man brought the men into the house of Joseph, and gave waters, and they washed their feet; and he gave fodder to their donkeys.
24 And‸ he brought water to wash their feet, and he brought fodder to their donkeys.18
24 The steward brought the men into Joseph's house and gave them water, and they washed their feet. He also gave feed to their donkeys.

25 And they fixed9 the gift until the coming of Joseph at noon, for they had heard that there they would eat bread.
25 Now they prepared the gifts until the coming of Joseph at noon, for they had heard that there he is about to dine.19
25 They got the gift ready for Joseph's arrival at noon, because they had heard that they would eat a meal there.

26 And Joseph came into the house, and they brought him the gift that was in their hand, into the house, and prostrated themselves to him to the land.
26 Now Joseph entered into the house, and they offered him the gifts that they had in their hands, into the house, and bowed down to him on face to the land.20
26 When Joseph came home, they brought him the gift they had with them into the house, and they bowed down to him to the ground.

27 And he asked them of peace, and said, "Is there peace to your father, the old one of whom you said? Is he still living?"
27 Now he asked them, "How do you fare21?" and he said to them, "Is your father healthy, the elder of whom you said? Is he still living?"
27 Joseph asked them how they were. Then he said, "Is your old father well, the one you spoke about? Is he still alive?"

28 And they said, "There is peace to your servant, our father; he is still living." And they bowed and prostrated themselves.
28 But they said, "Your servant, our father, is healthy; he is still living." And he said, "Blessed that human to God." And, having stooped, they bowed down.22
28 They said, "Your servant our father is well. He is still alive." And they bowed down low.

29 And he lifted his eyes and saw Benjamin his brother, the son of his mother, and said, "Is this your youngest brother, of whom you said to me?" And he said, "Elohim favor you, my son."
29 Now Joseph, having looked up with his eyes, saw Benjamin his brother, the one of the same mother, and said to them, "Is this your younger brother, whom you said to me to lead?" And he said, "God have mercy on you, child."23
29 Joseph looked up and saw his brother Benjamin, his own mother's son. He said, "Is this your youngest brother, the one you told me about?" Then he said, "God be gracious to you, my son."

30 And Joseph hurried, for his mercy12 grew warm toward his brother, and he sought to weep; and he came into the chamber and wept there.
30 Now Joseph was troubled, for his entrails were twisting together over his brother, and he was seeking to weep; now, having entered into the inner room, he wept there.24
30 Joseph hurried out, because his mercy grew warm toward his brother and he wanted to weep. He went into the inner room and wept there.

31 And he washed his face and went out, and held himself in, and said, "Put out bread."
31 And, having washed his face and having gone out, he controlled himself, and said, "Put out25 loaves."26
31 Then Joseph washed his face and came out. He held himself back and said, "Serve the meal."

32 And they put for him alone, and for them alone, and for the Egyptians eating with him alone; for the Egyptians are not able to eat bread with the Hebrews, for an abhorrence it is to Egypt13.
32 And they set before him alone, and them by themselves, and the Egyptians supping with him by themselves; for the Egyptians were not able to eat with the Hebrews loaves, for an abomination to the Egyptians is every shepherd of sheep.27
32 They served Joseph by himself, the brothers by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves, because the Egyptians could not eat a meal with the Hebrews, for that is detestable to the Egyptians.

33 And they sat before his face, the firstborn according to his birthright and the younger according to his youngness14; and the men were astounded, each man to his fellow.
33 Now they sat down before him, the firstborn according to his seniority and the younger according to his youth; but the humans were beside themselves, each to his brother.28
33 They sat before Joseph, from the firstborn by his birthright down to the youngest by his age. And the men looked at one another in amazement.

34 And he lifted uplifts15 from before his face to them, and the uplift of Benjamin was many over the uplifts of all of them, five hands. And they drank and were drunk with him.
34 Now they lifted a portion from him to them; but the portion of Benjamin was magnified beyond the portions of all, fivefold beyond theirs. Now they drank and were drunk with him.29
34 Joseph had portions carried to them from in front of him, and Benjamin's portion was five times as large as any of theirs. And they drank and got drunk with him.

  1. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "The man did solemnly protest unto us" (KJV) / "The man solemnly warned us" (RSV)

    Rulings 10, 2, 95

הָעֵד הֵעִד is the infinitive absolute with the hiphil of עוּד, the verb of עֵד "witness" (31:44–52): to call to witness, to bear witness against (Deut 4:26 "I call to witness against you today the skies and the land"; 1 Kgs 2:42). The warning is sworn testimony, and Judah reports it as a charge laid against them (בָּנוּ). The doubled verb is kept (10) as "witnessing… witnessed," the home gloss of the root held (2, 95); "warn" would lose the court. The WPRB says both.

    Rulings 95, 2

עָרַב "pledge" is the verb of עֵרָבוֹן "pledge" (38:17–20), one root. Judah, who once handed his seal, cord and staff to Tamar as a pledge, now pledges himself, and in 44:32 he will say it again before Joseph: "your servant pledged himself for the lad." "From my hand you shall seek him" is the language of required blood (9:5).

    Rulings 97, 74

פַּעֲמָיִם is the dual of פַּעַם "turn" (97), "two turns," "twice": two journeys there and back. זֶה, "this," is the idiom of elapsed time ("these twenty years," 31:38, 41).

  4. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "the best fruits in the land" (KJV) / "the choice fruits of the land" (RSV)

    Rulings 1, 25, 74

זִמְרָה occurs only here in this sense. Elsewhere it is "song" (Exod 15:2; Isa 12:2; Ps 118:14: "my strength and my song"). Onkelos renders "from what is praised in the land" (מִדְּמִשְׁתַּבַּח בְּאַרְעָא), and Rashi explains: what everyone sings of when it comes into the world. The LXX (ἀπὸ τῶν καρπῶν τῆς γῆς) and the Vulgate (de optimis terrae fructibus) give the sense "fruits," and modern lexicons divide between a homograph "choice produce" (from זָמַר "prune": what the vine-dresser cuts) and "strength" (Ugaritic ḏmr). Ruling 25 looks first to the Bible, and the Bible's word is the song. "Renown" keeps the reading of Onkelos and Rashi, the land's goods as what the land is praised for, without printing "song," which is שִׁיר's. The produce itself is named in the list that follows.

    Rulings 129, 95, 17

שְׁקֵדִים "almonds" is the tree of Jeremiah's pun, "I see a rod of almond (שָׁקֵד)… for I am watching (שֹׁקֵד) over my word" (Jer 1:11–12), and the blossom of Aaron's rod (Num 17:23). Ruling 129(f) gave לוּז "almond" (30:37) and declared that the two would be one tree under two names when this word was reached: they share "almond." The gifts answer the cargo of 37:25, balm, gum and ladanum carried down to Egypt by the caravan that bought Joseph.

    Rulings 123, 26, 39

רַחֲמִים is the plural of רֶחֶם "womb," the feeling of the womb for what it bore (1 Kgs 3:26, the true mother: "her mercy grew warm over her son"). Ruling 123(a) kept "mercy" free for it, and the plural is an English singular (26). The word returns at v. 30, where it is Joseph's own: Jacob prays that El Shaddai give mercy before the man, and the man's mercy is the answer.

    Rulings 21, 74

כַּאֲשֶׁר שָׁכֹלְתִּי שָׁכָלְתִּי, "as I am bereaved, I am bereaved," is resignation in the form of a tautology, as Esther's "and if I perish, I perish" (Esth 4:16). The verb is Rebekah's (27:45) and Jacob's at 42:36.

  8. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Ruling 74

לַאֲשֶׁר עַל־בֵּיתוֹ "to the one who was over his house": the office Joseph held in Potiphar's house (39:4–5), now held over his. The KJV and RSV call him "the steward"; the Hebrew names him by his place, here and in vv. 19; 44:1, 4. The WPRB names him "the steward" where a pronoun would be unclear.

  9. Decision↩ Back to the text

    Expected: "make ready" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 20, 2

וְהָכֵן is the hiphil of כּוּן, whose niphal is "be fixed" (41:32): the causative, "make fixed, make ready." The lexicon row names the niphal and leaves the hiphil to be fixed when reached; it is printed "fix," a split by stem (20), here and at v. 25 ("they fixed the gift"). The packet shows no earlier printing of the hiphil of כּוּן: unknown. English "fix" keeps both the firm and the made-ready ("fix a meal"), as the root does: "fix your heart" (1 Sam 7:3), "he fixed the skies" (Prov 3:19). The butchering is טֶבַח, the noun of טָבַח, whose participle is טַבָּח "butcher" (37:36; 39:1): Potiphar was "chief of the butchers," and Joseph now has a beast butchered for his brothers.

    Rulings 2, 74

לְהִתְגֹּלֵל is the hithpolel of גָּלַל "roll" (29:3, 8, 10): "to roll himself upon us," to come at us like a stone rolled down. The KJV and RSV, "seek occasion against us," take it as a figure. The concrete verb is kept, and it is followed by "fall upon us," as an attacker falls on his victim (Josh 11:7; Job 1:15).

  11. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 9, 107, 128

Elohim has the singular verb נָתַן "has given," so both nouns take the capital (9): "your Elohim and the Elohim of your father." The steward speaks, the man over Joseph's house, and he names the God of Jacob's house. ADONAI is not named in Gen 42–43; the capital comes from agreement, not from the scene. The WPRB has "God" twice, for the two nouns of the Hebrew.

  12. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 123, 26, 39

נִכְמְרוּ רַחֲמָיו "his mercy grew warm": כָּמַר niphal is to grow warm or hot (Lam 5:10, "our skin grew hot like an oven"; Hos 11:8, "my comfortings grow warm together"), and the idiom is the one of 1 Kgs 3:26. The verb is plural, agreeing with the plural noun; the English singular "mercy" follows ruling 26. See the note at v. 14.

  13. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "for that is an abomination unto the Egyptians" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 134, 18

The third word in the verse is מִצְרַיִם, the land's name "Egypt," used for its people; the source tags it with the gentilic (H4713) of the first two. The tag is kept and "Egypt" is printed as a logged departure, as at 41:55–56 (134l). תּוֹעֵבָה "abhorrence" is what a people's rite or custom abhors: Israel's shepherds to Egypt (46:34), Egypt's sacrifices to Israel (Exod 8:22). "Abomination" is the expected English.

  14. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 123, 20, 95

The seating sets two pairs of one root side by side: בְּכוֹר "firstborn" with בְּכוֹרָה "birthright" (the singular of the right of the firstborn, 25:31–34; 27:36; split by construction, 20), and צָעִיר "younger" with צְעִרָה, "youngness," its abstract noun (only here). The birthright is the word Esau sold and Jacob took, and Joseph, who knows each brother's age, seats them by it. The men are astounded because a stranger could not know it.

  15. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 95, 2, 39

מַשְׂאֵת "uplift" is the noun of נָשָׂא "lift," one root: what is lifted up, here a portion carried from the host's table (2 Sam 11:8); elsewhere a column of smoke (Judg 20:38) and a contribution (Ezek 20:40). The verse lifts uplifts, as the Hebrew does. "Five hands" is five shares, as in 47:24, "four hands"; "was many" keeps the home gloss of רָבָה. Joseph tests whether the brothers will begrudge Rachel's other son his larger share as they begrudged Joseph his tunic (37:3–4).

Διαμαρτυρίᾳ διαμεμαρτύρηται, "with solemn testimony he has solemnly testified," is the Septuagint's dative noun for the Hebrew infinitive absolute ("Witnessing, … witnessed"), and ἡμῖν, "to us," stands for "against us" (בָּנוּ).

The surety noun ἔγγυος (Heb 7:22) is not used. The present tense makes the undertaking now; ζήτησον, "seek," is an imperative for "you shall seek." ἐγὼ δέ, "But I," sets Judah against the father who refuses.

The Greek names Joseph (seeded) and adds ἀγαγεῖν, "to lead," after "said to me" (seeded, marked), and Swete adds αὐτοῖς, "to them," which is not marked (142a). ἀναβλέψας τοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς, "having looked up with his eyes," as at 37:25, for "he lifted his eyes"; τὸν ὁμομήτριον, "the one of the same mother," for "the son of his mother," as at 43:16. Ὁ θεὸς ἐλεήσαι σε, τέκνον, "God have mercy on you, child," where the Masoretic version reads "Elohim favor you, my son" (חָנַן; בְּנִי).

ἐταράχθη, "was troubled," where the Masoretic version reads "hurried" (מָהַר); συνεστρέφετο γὰρ τὰ ἔντερα αὐτοῦ, "for his entrails were twisting together," for "for his mercy grew warm" (נִכְמְרוּ רַחֲמָיו): the Greek keeps the body where the Hebrew keeps it too, with its own organ and its own motion. ἐζήτει, "he was seeking," an imperfect; ταμιεῖον, "the inner room" (Matt 6:6), for "the chamber."

παράθετε, the imperative of παρατίθημι "set before," here with no one named before whom: "Set before loaves" does not construe in English, and "set out" is ἀπαίρω's, so "put out" is printed here only. At 43:32 the verb has its object, "set before him," and the home gloss stands.

Swete ends the verse βδέλυγμα γάρ ἐστιν τοῖς Αἰγυπτίοις πᾶς ποιμὴν προβάτων, "for an abomination to the Egyptians is every shepherd of sheep," from Alexandrinus; Rahlfs and the Masoretic version end at "for an abhorrence it is to Egypt." The added words are those of 46:34, and they give a reason the Masoretic version does not give here; the alignment cannot pair them, and they are marked as a plus. βδέλυγμα, "abomination," stands for the Masoretic version's "abhorrence" (תּוֹעֵבָה, 135f), the word of Dan 9:27 and Matt 24:15. The Egyptians συνδειπνοῦσιν, "supping with," and συνεσθίειν … ἄρτους, "to eat loaves with," the Hebrews; ἐδύναντο, "were able," an imperfect, for "are able."
