1 And Joseph came and told Pharaoh, and said, "My father and my brothers, and their flock and their herd and all that is theirs, have come from the land of Canaan; and look, they are in the land of Goshen."
1 Now Joseph, having come, reported to Pharaoh, saying, "My father and my brothers, and their cattle and their oxen and all that is theirs, have come from the land of Canaan; and look, they are in the land of Goshen."
1 Joseph went and told Pharaoh. He said, "My father and my brothers, with their flocks and their herds and all that they have, have come from the land of Canaan. Look, they are in the land of Goshen."

2 And from the edge1 of his brothers he took five men, and positioned them before the face of Pharaoh.
2 From among his brothers Joseph took five men, and he presented them to Pharaoh.

3 And Pharaoh said to his brothers, "What are your deeds?" And they said to Pharaoh, "A shepherd of flock2 are your servants, both we and our fathers."
3 And Pharaoh said to the brothers of Joseph, "What is your work?" Now they said to Pharaoh, "Shepherds of sheep are your servants, both we and our fathers."
3 Pharaoh said to Joseph's brothers, "What is your work?" They said to Pharaoh, "Your servants are shepherds, both we and our fathers."

4 And they said to Pharaoh, "To sojourn in the land we have come, for there is no pasture for the flock that is your servants', for the hunger is heavy in the land of Canaan. And now, let your servants dwell, please, in the land of Goshen."
4 Now they said to Pharaoh, "To sojourn in the land we have arrived; for there is no pasture for the cattle of your servants, for the famine grew strong in the land of Canaan. Now therefore we will dwell‸ in the land of Goshen."1
4 They said to Pharaoh, "We have come to live as foreigners in the land, for there is no pasture for your servants' flocks, because the famine is severe in the land of Canaan. And now, please let your servants live in the land of Goshen."

5 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, saying, "Your father and your brothers have come to you3.
5 Now Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Let them dwell in the land of Goshen; but if you are aware that there are among them powerful men, appoint them rulers of my cattle." Now Jacob and his sons came into Egypt to Joseph; and Pharaoh, king of Egypt, heard. And Pharaoh said to Joseph, saying, "Your father and your brothers have arrived to you.2
5 Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Your father and your brothers have come to you.

6 The land of Egypt is before your face: in the best of the land make your father and your brothers dwell4; let them dwell in the land of Goshen. And if you know—and there are among them men of strength5—then you shall put them as officers of livestock over what is mine."
6 Look, the land of Egypt is before you; in the best land settle your father and your brothers."
6 The land of Egypt is open before you. Settle your father and your brothers in the best part of the land; let them live in the land of Goshen. And if you know of capable men among them, put them in charge of livestock, over what is mine."

7 And Joseph brought Jacob his father and stood him6 before the face of Pharaoh; and Jacob blessed7 Pharaoh.
7 Joseph brought in his father Jacob and stood him before Pharaoh, and Jacob blessed Pharaoh.

8 And Pharaoh said to Jacob, "How many are the days of the years of your life?"
8 Now Pharaoh said to Jacob, "How many are the years of the days of your life?"
8 Pharaoh said to Jacob, "How many are the years of your life?"

8 εἶπεν δὲ Φαραὼ τῷ Ἰακώβ Πόσα ἔτη ἡμερῶν τῆς ζωῆς σου;

9 And Jacob said to Pharaoh, "The days of the years of my sojournings8 are thirty and a hundred years. Little and bad have been the days of the years of my life, and they have not overtaken the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their sojournings."
9 And Jacob said to Pharaoh, "The days of the years of my life, which I sojourn, are a hundred thirty years. Small and evil have the days of the years of my life come to be; they have not reached to the days of the years of the life of my fathers, which days they sojourned."3
9 Jacob said to Pharaoh, "The years of my life as a foreigner are 130. Few and bad have been the years of my life, and they have not reached the years of my fathers' lives in the days of their life as foreigners."

10 And Jacob blessed Pharaoh, and went out from before the face of Pharaoh.
10 And Jacob, having blessed Pharaoh, went out from him.
10 Jacob blessed Pharaoh and went out from Pharaoh's presence.

11 And Joseph made his father and his brothers dwell4, and gave them a tenure in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses9, as Pharaoh had commanded.
11 And Joseph settled his father and his brothers, and gave them a holding in the land of Egypt, in the best land, in the land of Rameses, even as Pharaoh had ordered.
11 Joseph settled his father and his brothers and gave them land to hold in the land of Egypt, in the best part of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded.

12 And Joseph provided for his father and his brothers and all the house of his father with bread, according to the mouth10 of the little ones.
12 And Joseph measured out grain to his father and to his brothers and to all the house of his father, grain according to body.4
12 Joseph provided his father, his brothers, and all his father's household with food, according to the mouths of the little ones.

13 And bread there was none in all the land, for the hunger was very heavy; and the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan languished from the face of the hunger.
13 Now grain there was not in all the land, for the famine grew strong very much; now the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan failed from the famine.
13 There was no food in all the land, for the famine was very severe. The land of Egypt and the land of Canaan wasted away because of the famine.

14 And Joseph gleaned11 all the silver that was found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, for the rations that they were buying12; and Joseph brought the silver into the house of Pharaoh.
14 Now Joseph gathered all the silver that was found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, for the grain which they were buying, and he measured out grain to them; and Joseph carried all the silver into the house of Pharaoh.5
14 Joseph gathered up all the silver that was found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, in exchange for the grain they were buying, and Joseph brought the silver into Pharaoh's house.

15 And the silver was spent from the land of Egypt and from the land of Canaan, and all Egypt13 came to Joseph, saying, "Give14 us bread! And why should we die in front of you? For silver has ceased."
15 And all the silver failed out of the land of Egypt and out of the land of Canaan. Now all the Egyptians came to Joseph, saying, "Give us loaves! And why are we dying before you? For our silver has failed."6
15 When the silver was used up in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came to Joseph and said, "Give us food! And why should we die in front of you? For the silver is gone."

16 And Joseph said, "Give14 your livestock, and let me give to you for your livestock, if silver has ceased."
16 Now Joseph said to them, "Bring your cattle, and I will give you loaves for your cattle, if your silver has failed."
16 Joseph said, "Give your livestock, and I will give to you in exchange for your livestock, if the silver is gone."

17 And they brought their livestock to Joseph, and Joseph gave them bread for the horses and for the livestock of the flock and for the livestock of the herd and for the donkeys; and he guided15 them with bread for all their livestock in that year.
17 Now they led the cattle to Joseph, and Joseph gave them loaves for the horses and for the ‸sheep and for the ‸oxen and for the donkeys; and he nourished them with loaves for all their cattle in that twelvemonth.7
17 They brought their livestock to Joseph, and Joseph gave them food in exchange for the horses, the flocks, the herds, and the donkeys. He guided them through that year with food in exchange for all their livestock.

18 And that year was spent, and they came to him in the second year and said to him, "We will not conceal from my lord that16 the silver is spent, and the livestock of the beasts is to my lord; there is not left before the face of my lord except our frames17 and our ground.
18 Now that year went out, and they came to him in the second year and said to him, "Lest we be rubbed out from our lord; for if our silver has failed, and the belongings and the cattle are to you, the lord, and there is not reserved to us before the lord except our own body and our land,8
18 When that year was over, they came to Joseph the next year and said to him, "We will not hide from my lord that the silver is used up, and the herds of animals belong to my lord. Nothing is left in my lord's sight except our bodies and our land.

19 Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our ground? Acquire us and our ground for bread, and we will be, we and our ground, slaves18 to Pharaoh; and give seed, and we will live and not die, and the ground will not be desolate."
19 so that we may not die before you‸ and the land be laid waste, acquire us and our land for loaves, and we will be, we and our land, servants of Pharaoh; give seed so that we may sow‸ and not die, and the land‸ will be laid waste."9
19 Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our land? Buy us and our land for food, and we and our land will be slaves to Pharaoh. And give seed, and we will live and not die, and the land will not become desolate."

20 And Joseph acquired all the ground of Egypt for Pharaoh, for Egypt13 sold, each man his field, for the hunger was strong upon them; and the land was Pharaoh's.
20 And Joseph acquired all the land of the Egyptians for Pharaoh; for the Egyptians sold their land to Pharaoh, for the famine prevailed over them; and the land came to be Pharaoh's,
20 Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh, for the Egyptians sold, each man his field, because the famine pressed hard upon them. And the land became Pharaoh's.

21 And the people—he made them pass to the cities19, from the edge of the border of Egypt and to its edge.
21 and the people he brought under slavery to himself as servants, from the tips10 of the borders of Egypt to the tips.11
21 As for the people, Joseph moved them into the cities, from one end of Egypt's border to the other end.

22 Solely the ground of the priests he did not acquire, for the priests had an allotment20 from Pharaoh, and they ate their allotment that Pharaoh gave them; therefore they did not sell their ground.
22 Apart from the land of the priests only: this, Joseph did not acquire; for in a giving Pharaoh gave a present to the priests‸, and they ate the giving that Pharaoh gave them; therefore they did not sell their land.12
22 Only the land of the priests Joseph did not buy, for the priests had a fixed share from Pharaoh, and they lived on the share that Pharaoh gave them. That is why they did not sell their land.

23 And Joseph said to the people, "Look, I have acquired you this day, and your ground, for Pharaoh. Look21: for you, seed; and you shall seed the ground.
23 Now Joseph said to all the Egyptians, "Look, I have acquired you and your land today for Pharaoh; take for yourselves seed and sow the land.13
23 Joseph said to the people, "Look, this day I have bought you and your land for Pharaoh. Look, here is seed for you, and you shall sow the land.

24 And it shall be, at the produce, you shall give a fifth to Pharaoh, and four of the hands22 shall be yours, for seed of the field and for your food and for those who are in your houses, and for your little ones to eat."
24 And its produce shall be: you shall give the fifth part to Pharaoh; but the four parts shall be for you yourselves, for seed for the land and for eating for you, and for all your houses‸."14
24 When the crops come in, you shall give a fifth to Pharaoh, and four parts shall be yours, as seed for the field and as food for you and for those in your households, and for your little ones to eat."

25 And they said, "You have kept us alive! Let us find favor in the eyes of my lord, and we will be slaves18 to Pharaoh."
25 And they said, "You have saved us! We have found grace before our lord, and we will be servants of Pharaoh."
25 They said, "You have kept us alive! May we find favor in my lord's eyes, and we will be slaves to Pharaoh."

26 And Joseph put it as an allotment20 until this day over the ground of Egypt: to Pharaoh, the fifth23. Solely the ground of the priests alone was not Pharaoh's.
26 And Joseph set it for them as an ordinance until this day over the land of Egypt, to take a fifth of it for Pharaoh, apart from the land of the priests only; it was not Pharaoh's.
26 Joseph made it a law over the land of Egypt, until this day, that the fifth belongs to Pharaoh. Only the land of the priests alone did not become Pharaoh's.

27 And Israel dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the land of Goshen; and they took hold in it, and bore fruit and were many, very much.
27 Now Israel dwelt in the land of Egypt, on the land of Goshen; and they inherited on it,‸ and were multiplied very much.15
27 Israel lived in the land of Egypt, in the land of Goshen. They took hold of land there, and they were fruitful and became very many.

29 And the days of Israel drew near to die, and he called to his son, to Joseph, and said to him, "If, please, I have found favor in your eyes, put, please, your hand under my thigh25, and do with me loyalty and truth: do not, please, bury me in Egypt.
29 Now the days of Israel drew near to die, and he called his son Joseph and said to him, "If I have found grace before you, set‸ your hand under my thigh, and you shall do on me mercifulness and truth, so as not to bury me in Egypt;16
29 When the days of Israel drew near for him to die, he called his son Joseph and said to him, "If I have found favor in your eyes, please put your hand under my thigh, and deal with me in loyalty and truth: please do not bury me in Egypt.

30 When I lie down with my fathers, carry me out of Egypt and bury me in their burial place." Joseph said, "I myself will do as you have said."

  1. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "some of his brethren" (KJV) / "from among his brothers" (RSV)

    Rulings 2, 40

מִקְצֵה is "from the edge," the home gloss of קָצֶה held, as in v. 21, "from the edge of the border of Egypt and to its edge." The KJV and RSV read the phrase as a partitive, "some of," which it can be (19:4 "all the people from the edge," that is, every one of them). The rabbis read the edge as the end of the line, and disagree over which end. b. Bava Qamma 92a takes it as the weakest, whom Pharaoh would not draft as soldiers (Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Issachar and Benjamin, after Moses' blessing, which names five brothers twice); another view in Genesis Rabbah (95:4) takes the strongest. No stranger sense is attested beyond "edge," so the home gloss is printed and the readings are given here (40).

  2. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Ruling 6

The predicate is singular, רֹעֵה צֹאן "a shepherd of flock," with a plural subject: the brothers name a trade, not a count of men. Joseph had used the plural, "shepherds of flock" (46:32). The brothers answer with the word Joseph told them to avoid: he told them to say "men of livestock" (46:34), and they say "shepherds."

  3. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 53, 74

The LXX sets vv. 5–6 in a different order and adds a sentence. After Pharaoh's first words it has "Let them dwell in the land of Gesem, and if you know that there are capable men among them, appoint them rulers of my livestock," then adds "And Jacob and his sons came into Egypt to Joseph, and Pharaoh king of Egypt heard," and only then gives "Your father and your brothers have come to you; look, the land of Egypt is before you." The Masoretic order is printed.

  4. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "make thy father and brethren to dwell" (KJV) / "settle your father and your brothers" (RSV)

    Rulings 2, 20

הוֹשֵׁב is the hiphil of יָשַׁב "dwell," the causative, and so at v. 11 (וַיּוֹשֶׁב). The home gloss is kept with "make": "make… dwell," as the KJV does. "Settle" is the gloss of נוּחַ (H3240) and is not used. The hiphil as "make dwell," a split by stem, is ruled (136).

  5. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 2, 35

וְאִם יָדַעְתָּ וְיֶשׁ בָּם "and if you know, and there are among them": the second clause is the thing to be known, joined by "and," and it is set off with dashes so that the conjunction stays. "Then" opens the apodosis (35). חַיִל is "strength" (34:29), the "woman of strength" of Ruth 3:11 and Prov 31:10; the KJV has "men of activity," the RSV "able men." The brothers become keepers of the king's own livestock, the trade Egypt abhors (46:34).

  6. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 2, 122, 128

וַיַּעֲמִדֵהוּ is the hiphil of עָמַד "stand," which ruling 122(d) left to be fixed when reached. "Make stand" is the hiphil of קוּם (the covenant, 6:18; 9:9), and the two are kept apart. English "stand" is also transitive ("she stood him in the doorway"), so the hiphil keeps the home gloss, transitive, as the hiphil of שׁוּב keeps "return" (128b): "stood him before the face of Pharaoh." The KJV and RSV have "set him before Pharaoh." This is ruled (136).

  7. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 2, 74

Jacob "blessed" Pharaoh at his coming in and again at his going out (v. 10). בָּרַךְ can be the greeting of an audience (2 Sam 19:40; 1 Kgs 8:66), and Rashi takes v. 7 so, "the asking of peace, as is done when appearing before kings." At v. 10 he says Jacob blessed Pharaoh that the Nile would rise to meet him, and so it did, which ended the hunger. Heb 7:7 states the principle: "the lesser is blessed by the greater." Here a shepherd, an old man and a sojourner, blesses the king of Egypt, as Abram's seed was to be a blessing to the families of the ground (12:3).

  8. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 95, 118, 122

מְגוּרִים is "sojournings," the noun of גּוּר "sojourn" (v. 4), as in "the land of your sojournings" (17:8; 28:4; 36:7; 37:1). Jacob answers Pharaoh's "years of your life" with "years of my sojournings," as if his life and his sojourning were the same span. "Little and bad" keeps מְעַט "little" and the core "bad" (KJV "few and evil"). His fathers lived longer, Abraham a hundred and seventy-five years (25:7) and Isaac a hundred and eighty (35:28), and the hundred and thirty years "have not overtaken" theirs. David says the same of himself before Adonai: "for I am a sojourner with you, a resident like all my fathers" (Ps 39:13; 1 Chr 29:15), and Heb 11:13 gathers the patriarchs as those who "confessed that they were strangers and sojourners on the land."

  9. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Ruling 18

רַעְמְסֵס is "Rameses," the land given to Jacob's house, and the store-city that Israel will later build as slaves (Exod 1:11, spelled רַעַמְסֵס, "Raamses") and the place from which they set out (Exod 12:37; Num 33:3, 5). The name is that of the Delta capital of Ramesses II, Pi-Ramesse, in the thirteenth century BCE; the narrator uses the name the place bore later. The LXX has Ραμεσση. The chapter gives Israel land in the place where it will be made to build.

  10. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "according to their families" (KJV) / "according to the number of their dependents" (RSV)

    Rulings 39, 2

לְפִי is "according to the mouth of," the measure that a mouth sets (Exod 12:4, "each according to the mouth of his eating"; 16:16, 18, 21). The concrete word is kept (39): the bread is measured by the mouths of the little ones, the youngest and most numerous eaters. The KJV's "families" and the RSV's "number" turn the mouth into an abstraction. Rashi: as much as all their household needed.

  11. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Ruling 2

לָקַט is "glean," to pick up one by one (31:46; Ruth 2), and is kept: Joseph picks up the silver of two lands piece by piece, as the hungry glean a field. The KJV has "gathered up," which is אָסַף's word.

  12. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "which they bought" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 2, 135

שֹׁבְרִים is the qal of שָׁבַר, "buy rations" (135s), with its own noun שֶׁבֶר "rations" already standing in the clause. Printing the gloss whole would say "rations" twice, so the verb is printed "buying" and the noun carries the rations; the tag keeps the verb.

  13. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "all the Egyptians came" (KJV, RSV), and at v. 20 "the Egyptians sold"

    Rulings 18, 134, 135

The source tags מִצְרַיִם here and at v. 20 as H4713, the gentilic "Egyptian," because the word means the people, with plural verbs. The word is the name of the land, and the house prints it "Egypt," with the tag kept and the departure logged, as at 41:55–56, 45:2 and 46:34 (134l, 135o). The land that comes and sells is its people.

  14. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Ruling 128

הָבָה with an object is "give" (128c), as the starving say it in v. 15 and Joseph answers it in v. 16. Before a cohortative the same word is "up" (11:3–4, 7).

  15. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "fed them with bread" (KJV) / "supplied them with food" (RSV)

    Ruling 2

נָהַל in the piel is "guide," the shepherd's verb: "by waters of rest he guides me" (Ps 23:2), "he will guide the nursing ewes" (Isa 40:11); "you guided them in your strength to your holy pasture" (Exod 15:13). The home gloss is kept, and the brothers who said "your servants are shepherds" (v. 3) have a brother who shepherds Egypt through the year with bread. Onkelos and the KJV have "fed."

  16. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 2, 19

כִּי אִם after a negated verb of speech is "that": "we will not conceal from my lord that the silver is spent." The two particles are one connective here, introducing what is not concealed, and neither "for" nor "if" is a separate word in English. The second negation, "there is not left," is the Hebrew's impersonal לֹא נִשְׁאַר, kept with its "except" (בִּלְתִּי אִם, 135q).

  17. Decision↩ Back to the text

    Expected: "our bodies" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 2, 33, 57

גְּוִיָּה is the body, and in most of its uses a dead body: Saul's on the wall of Beth-shan (1 Sam 31:10, 12), the lion's carcass (Judg 14:8–9), the slain (Nah 3:3; Ps 110:6). Of the living it is the body in its outward frame: the creatures' bodies covered by their wings (Ezek 1:11, 23), the man in linen's (Dan 10:6), and "they rule over our bodies and our livestock" (Neh 9:37), which echoes this verse. "Body" is the home gloss of בֶּטֶן (126c), and "corpse" would make the speakers dead before they ask to live (57). "Frame," the body as a whole and as a structure, is printed. The report raises the gloss.

  18. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Ruling 34

עֶבֶד splits by ruling 34. The brothers call themselves "your servants" before Pharaoh (46:34; vv. 3–4), the deferential word. The Egyptians offer themselves and their ground for bread, to be acquired as property, and so they are "slaves" (vv. 19, 25). The Hebrew word is the same throughout, and so is the house of slaves (Exod 13:3) that Egypt will become for Israel.

  19. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "he removed them to cities" (KJV) / "he made slaves of them" (RSV)

    Rulings 1, 40, 46, 54

The Masoretic text reads הֶעֱבִיר אֹתוֹ לֶעָרִים, "he made them pass to the cities," the hiphil of עָבַר. The Samaritan Pentateuch reads הֶעֱבִיד אֹתוֹ לַעֲבָדִים, "he made them slaves," with ד for ר, and the LXX agrees (κατεδουλώσατο αὐτῷ εἰς παῖδας). The RSV follows them; the KJV, Onkelos and Rashi follow the MT, and Rashi explains the move: Joseph shifted the people from city to city so that no one could claim the land as his own, and so that his brothers would not be called exiles. Both readings fit the chapter, the slaves of vv. 19 and 25 and the cities where the corn was stored (41:48). The MT is printed (40). "From the edge of the border of Egypt and to its edge" keeps the range of ruling 103 with its "and."

  20. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 2, 25, 74

חֹק, from the root of "inscribe, prescribe," is a thing fixed or allotted: a ration of food (Prov 30:8, "the bread of my allotment"; 31:15; Ezek 16:27), a limit set (Job 14:5; Prov 8:29), and a statute or decree (Exod 15:25; Ps 2:7). "Statute" is the gloss of חֻקָּה. Here the word runs as a chain: the priests' allotment from Pharaoh (v. 22, twice), and the fifth that Joseph sets as an allotment over the ground (v. 26), so one gloss holds the three. The priests eat their allotment and keep their land; everyone else gives a fifth and keeps four hands of it.

  21. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "lo, here is seed for you" (KJV) / "Now here is seed for you" (RSV)

    Rulings 2, 88, 95

הֵא is a presentative particle, "look," found only here and at Ezek 16:43 (and in Aramaic, Dan 2:43 הָא). It does the work of הֵן and הִנֵּה, which open the same verse, and is printed with their gloss. Sharing "look" with them as one particle in three spellings (88) is ruled (136).

  22. Decision↩ Back to the text

    Expected: "four parts" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 39, 2

יָד is "hand," and the plural is a share, a hand's portion: "Benjamin's portion was five hands more than theirs" (43:34); "we have ten hands in the king" (2 Sam 19:44). The concrete word is kept (39). The fifth and the four hands add to five, each harvest counted out by hand.

  23. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 134, 95

חֹמֶשׁ is the noun "fifth," the share, of the root of חֲמִישִׁי "fifth" (v. 24) and the verb חָמַשׁ "fifth" (41:34), which ruling 134(j) declared one root. The fifth that Joseph advised taking in the seven years of plenty (41:34) is made permanent here. Sharing "fifth" with them is ruled (136). The ground of the priests "alone" (לְבַדָּם) is the exception.

  24. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 36, 79, 74

In the Masoretic text the reading Vayechi ("And he lived") begins at v. 28 with no space between it and v. 27, the only weekly reading of the Torah not set off by a section break. Genesis Rabbah 96:1, followed by Rashi, explains it: when Jacob died the eyes and hearts of Israel were closed by the slavery that began; or, Jacob wished to reveal the end of days to his sons, and it was closed from him (49:1). The sum "seven years and forty and a hundred years" keeps the Hebrew order (91), 147 in the WPRB. Seventeen years in Egypt answers the seventeen years Joseph lived with Jacob before he was sold (37:2).

  25. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 125, 39

"Put your hand under my thigh" is the oath of 24:2, 9, where Abraham made his slave swear not to take Isaac a wife from Canaan; here Jacob makes Joseph swear not to bury him in Egypt. The thigh is the seat of offspring (46:26; Exod 1:5). "Loyalty and truth," חֶסֶד וֶאֱמֶת, is the pair of 24:27, 49 and 32:11 (125k), with עָשָׂה "do," the verb loyalty always takes. Rashi calls loyalty to the dead "loyalty of truth," since it looks for no return.

  26. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Ruling 2

שָׁכַב עִם אֲבֹתַי "I will lie with my fathers" is the idiom of dying (Deut 31:16; 1 Kgs 2:10, "David lay with his fathers"), kept apart from the sexual sense of the same verb with a woman (19:32–35; 30:15–16); the WPRB has "lie down," not "sleep with." Rashi joins the clause to the oath at the head of the verse and reads "lie" as dying, not as being laid in the grave, since the burial follows ("bury me in their burial"): "I am to lie with my fathers, and you shall carry me." The Hebrew's "and" is kept.

  27. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "bowed himself upon the bed's head" (KJV) / "bowed himself upon the head of his bed" (RSV)

    Rulings 1, 40, 46, 4

The consonants מטה can be read מִטָּה "bed" or מַטֶּה "staff" (38:18, 25, Judah's staff). The Masoretic vowels give "bed," and so do Onkelos and the Vulgate (adoravit Israhel Deum conversus ad lectuli caput). The LXX reads "staff," προσεκύνησεν Ισραηλ ἐπὶ τὸ ἄκρον τῆς ῥάβδου αὐτοῦ, "Israel prostrated himself on the top of his staff," with the Peshitta, and Heb 11:21 quotes the Greek of Jacob's faith: "he prostrated himself on the top of his staff." The bed returns at 48:2 ("Israel strengthened himself and sat on the bed") and 49:33, which favours the vowels here; David prostrates himself on his bed in 1 Kgs 1:47. The MT is printed (40), and the NT keeps its own staff (4). The text does not say to whom Israel bowed. The Vulgate and Rashi say to Elohim, whose Presence, Rashi says, rests above the head of the sick (b. Shabbat 12b); b. Megillah 16b reads it as to Joseph, the dream of the sun bowing (37:9–10) fulfilled ("when the fox has its hour, bow down to it"). Rashi also hears thanks that his bed was whole, none of his sons wicked.

νῦν οὖν κατοικήσομεν, "Now therefore we will dwell," where the Masoretic version reads "And now, let your servants dwell, please": the brothers state what they will do, in the first person, and the Greek lacks "please" (seeded). τοῖς κτήνεσιν, "for the cattle," for "for the flock"; ἐνίσχυσεν, "grew strong," of the famine as at 43:1, for "is heavy."

The Greek orders the audience otherwise. Pharaoh first answers the brothers' request, "Let them dwell in the land of Goshen; but if you are aware that there are among them powerful men, appoint them rulers of my cattle," which is the Masoretic version's 47:6b; then it tells that Jacob and his sons came to Joseph in Egypt and that Pharaoh heard, which the Masoretic version lacks; and only then do the Masoretic version's 47:5 and 47:6a follow, "Your father and your brothers have arrived to you; look, the land of Egypt is before you." The opening "Now Pharaoh said to Joseph" and the narrative of the arrival are marked as pluses (seeded), and the moved answer takes the mark of order. In it, εἰ δὲ ἐπίστῃ ὅτι, "but if you are aware that," for "And if you know—and"; δυνατοί, "powerful," for "of strength"; κατάστησον, "appoint," for "you shall put"; ἄρχοντας τῶν ἐμῶν κτηνῶν, "rulers of my cattle," for "officers of livestock over what is mine." Swete prints Ἰωσήφ at the opening from Vaticanus, where Rahlfs reads differently; it stands inside the plus.

    Rulings 52, 54, 141, 143

The Greek reads "the days of the years of my life" (seeded plus) and turns the Masoretic version's "my sojournings" into a clause, ἃς παροικῶ, "which I sojourn," present, so that Jacob is a sojourner still (Heb 11:9, 13); at the close, ἃς ἡμέρας παρῴκησαν, "which days they sojourned," for "in the days of their sojournings." ἑκατὸν τριάκοντα ἔτη, "a hundred thirty years," the same count in the Greek order. μικραὶ καὶ πονηραί, "small and evil": the KJV's "few and evil" follows the Hebrew, where the Masoretic version reads "little and bad."

σῖτον κατὰ σῶμα, "measured out grain … grain according to body," where the Masoretic version reads "provided for … with bread, according to the mouth of the little ones." The Greek names the dole by its measure of grain (Luke 12:42 τὸ σιτομέτριον, "the measure of grain") and counts by heads: σῶμα of persons reckoned one by one, as at 36:6. The redundancy of verb and object stands as the Greek has it. Swete prints αὐτοῦ after "his father" from Vaticanus, where Rahlfs reads differently.

The Greek repeats πᾶν, "all the silver," in the second clause, where the Masoretic version reads "brought the silver"; the alignment does not seed it, and it is marked as at 47:15.

    Rulings 54, 141, 143

The alignment lists an unplaced one-word plus at this verse, Rahlfs' πᾶν, "all," with no verse of its own; Swete has the word here, τὸ ἀργύριον πᾶν, "all the silver" (Swete's token, which the alignment cannot pair), and it is marked as a plus where it stands. ἐξέλιπεν, "failed" (ἐκλείπω, of the flood water at 8:13), for "was spent" and for "has ceased"; ἄρτους, "loaves," for "bread"; ἀποθνήσκομεν, "are we dying," present, for "should we die." The Egyptians, οἱ Αἰγύπτιοι, for "Egypt."

The Greek names the beasts plainly, "the sheep … the oxen," where the Masoretic version reads "the livestock of the flock … the livestock of the herd" (both lacks seeded). ἐξέθρεψεν, "he nourished," for "he guided" (נָהַל, the shepherd's leading to water, Ps 23:2), and ἐν ἄρτοις, "with loaves," for "with bread."

Μή ποτε ἐκτριβῶμεν ἀπὸ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν, "Lest we be rubbed out from our lord," an anxious plea (153d) where the Masoretic version reads "We will not conceal from my lord" (לֹא נְכַחֵד): the Greek read כחד as "be effaced, be cut off" (the niphal at Exod 9:15; Zech 11:9), and its μή ποτε asks that the ruin not come, where the Masoretic version's "not" denies a concealment: the negative force stands in both, on different verbs. Swete prints Μή ποτε and ἡμῶν, "our," from Vaticanus, where Rahlfs reads differently. εἰ γάρ, "for if," for "that"; "the belongings and the cattle" for "the livestock of the beasts"; τὸ ἴδιον σῶμα, "our own body," singular, for "our frames." The Greek adds ἡμῖν, "to us" (seeded). The "if" has no "then": the sentence runs on into 47:19, where the people's request answers it.

Swete prints καὶ ἡ γῆ ἐρημωθήσεται, "and the land will be laid waste," without the negative (confirmed on the scan of Swete's page, Vaticanus) that Rahlfs (οὐκ ἐρημωθήσεται) and the Masoretic version ("and the ground will not be desolate") have. The text is translated as printed, and the lack of "not" is marked; as it stands, the clause can only tell what will follow if no seed is given. In the same line the Greek has ἵνα σπείρωμεν, "so that we may sow" (seeded plus), and lacks the Masoretic version's "and we will live" (וְנִחְיֶה), which the alignment does not seed; the lack is marked. At the opening, ἵνα μὴ ἀποθάνωμεν, "so that we may not die," for "Why should we die," and the Greek adds καὶ ἡ γῆ ἐρημωθῇ, "and the land be laid waste" (seeded), and lacks "both we" (seeded). παῖδες Φαραώ, "servants of Pharaoh," for "slaves to Pharaoh."

ἄκρον keeps its home gloss "top" at 47:31 (Heb 11:21), but "the tops of the borders" would put height into a line on the ground. "Tip," the point where a thing ends, is the word's own sense (Luke 16:24 "the tip of his finger"), and the same doubled phrase stands at Matt 24:31, "from the tips of the skies to their tips."

κατεδουλώσατο αὐτῷ εἰς παῖδας, "he brought under slavery to himself as servants," where the Masoretic version reads "he made them pass to the cities" (הֶעֱבִיר אֹתוֹ לֶעָרִים): the Greek reads הֶעֱבִיד אֹתוֹ לַעֲבָדִים, "he made them serve as slaves," with ד for ר, as the Samaritan Pentateuch also reads. The people become what they offered to be (47:19, 25). The "borders" are plural, ὁρίων, for "border."

ἐν δόσει γὰρ ἔδωκεν δόμα τοῖς ἱερεῦσιν Φαραώ, "for in a giving Pharaoh gave a present to the priests," where the Masoretic version reads "for the priests had an allotment from Pharaoh" (חֹק); and "they ate the giving" for "their allotment." The Greek names the priests' portion by its being given (δόσις, Jas 1:17 "every good giving") and doubles it with δόμα, "present"; at 47:26 the Masoretic version's same word "allotment" is πρόσταγμα, "ordinance." The Greek adds "gave" and lacks "from" (seeded), and adds ταύτην Ἰωσήφ, "this, Joseph" (seeded), set where English places them. χωρίς, "apart from," answers the Masoretic version's "solely" (רַק), and μόνον, "only," is the Greek's addition (seeded), as 47:26 shows, where χωρὶς … μόνον stands for רַק … לְבַדָּם, "solely … alone."

πᾶσι τοῖς Αἰγυπτίοις, "to all the Egyptians," for "to the people." For "Look: for you, seed; and you shall seed the ground," the Greek has λάβετε αὐτοῖς σπέρμα καὶ σπείρατε τὴν γῆν, "take seed for yourselves and sow the land," two commands; Swete prints αὐτοῖς from Vaticanus, where Rahlfs has no such word.

καὶ ἔσται τὰ γενήματα αὐτῆς, "And its produce shall be," the land's, for "And it shall be, at the produce"; τὸ πέμπτον μέρος, "the fifth part"; τὰ δὲ τέσσερα μέρη, "but the four parts," for "and four of the hands" (הַיָּדֹת, shares); Swete spells τέσσερα (τέσσαρες). "For seed for the land" for "for seed of the field," and "for all your houses" (πᾶσιν seeded) for "for those who are in your houses." The Greek lacks "and for your little ones to eat" (seeded).

ἐκληρονόμησαν ἐπ᾽ αὐτῆς, "they inherited on it," for "they took hold in it": κληρονομέω, the verb of Matt 5:5. For the Masoretic version's pair "bore fruit and were many," the blessing of 1:28, the Greek has one verb, ἐπληθύνθησαν, "were multiplied"; the lack of "bore fruit" (וַיִּפְרוּ) is marked.

ποιήσεις ἐπ᾽ ἐμὲ ἐλεημοσύνην καὶ ἀλήθειαν, "you shall do on me mercifulness and truth," a future for the Masoretic version's "do with me loyalty and truth" (חֶסֶד וֶאֱמֶת). The Greek's word for חֶסֶד here is ἐλεημοσύνη, the word of Matt 6:2–4, not ἔλεος "mercy." τοῦ μή με θάψαι, "so as not to bury me," for "do not, please, bury me." ὑπόθες, "set under," lacks the Masoretic version's "please" (seeded).

ἐπὶ τὸ ἄκρον τῆς ῥάβδου αὐτοῦ, "on the top of his rod," where the Masoretic version reads "on the head of the bed" (עַל־רֹאשׁ הַמִּטָּה): the Greek reads the consonants מטה as מַטֶּה "rod," where the Masoretic pointing has מִטָּה "bed"; at 48:2 and 49:33 the Greek too has the bed (κλίνη). Heb 11:21 quotes this Greek: "by faith Jacob, dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, and bowed down on the top of his rod." The Vulgate of Genesis follows the Hebrew (ad lectuli caput), while its Hebrews reads adoravit fastigium virgae eius, "he worshipped the top of his rod," without the preposition, a text cited in the controversy over images (John of Damascus, On the Divine Images). προσκυνέω is "bow down" (146a) and does not decide whether the bowing was worship, or whose rod it was.
