1 And Jacob lifted his eyes and saw, and look, Esau coming, and with him four hundred men. And he halved1 the children over Leah and over Rachel and over the two maids.
1 Now, having looked up, Jacob saw, and look, Esau his brother coming, he and four hundred men with him. And Jacob distributed the little children over Leah and over Rachel and the two servant-girls.1
1 Jacob looked up and saw Esau coming, and four hundred men with him. He divided the children among Leah, Rachel, and the two maids.

2 And he put the maids and their children first, and Leah and her children last2, and Rachel and Joseph last2.
2 And he made the two servant-girls and their sons first, and Leah and her little children behind, and Rachel and Joseph last.2
2 He put the maids and their children in front, and behind them Leah and her children, and Rachel and Joseph.

3 And he himself passed over before their faces, and prostrated himself to the land seven turns3, until he approached, as far as his brother.
3 But he himself passed by in front of them, and bowed down upon the land seven times, until he drew near to his brother.
3 He himself went on ahead of them. He bowed down to the ground seven times, until he came up to his brother.

4 And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him4, and they wept.
4 And Esau ran up to a meeting with him, and having embraced him he kissed him, and fell against his neck; and they both wept.3
4 Esau ran to meet him. He hugged him, threw his arms around his neck, and kissed him, and they wept.

5 And he lifted his eyes and saw the women and the children, and he said, "Who are these to you?" And he said, "The children with whom Elohim has favored5 your servant."
5 And having looked up he saw the women and the little children, and he said, "What are these to you?" Now he said, "The little children by which God has had mercy on your servant."4
5 When Esau looked up and saw the women and the children, he asked, "Who are these people of yours?" Jacob answered, "They are the children God has graciously given your servant."

6 And the servant-girls‸ came near, and their little children, and they bowed down.
6 Then the maids came near with their children and bowed down.

6 וַתִּגַּ֧שְׁןָ הַשְּׁפָח֛וֹת הֵ֥נָּה וְיַלְדֵיהֶ֖ן וַתִּֽשְׁתַּחֲוֶֽיןָ

6 καὶ προσήγγισαν αἱ παιδίσκαι καὶ τὰ παιδία αὐτῶν, καὶ προσεκύνησαν·

7 And Leah came near‸, and her children, and they bowed down; and after these things Rachel came near, and Joseph, and they bowed down.
7 Leah also came near with her children, and they bowed down. After that, Joseph and Rachel came near, and they bowed down.

8 And he said, "Who7 to you is all this camp that I came upon?" And he said, "To find favor in the eyes of my lord."
8 And he said, "What are these to you, all these camps that I have met?" Now he said, "That your servant may find grace in your eyes, lord."5
8 Esau asked, "What is all this camp of yours that I met?" Jacob answered, "It is to find favor with my lord."

9 And Esau said, "There is to me a vast deal8, my brother; let what is yours be yours."
9 Now Esau said, "There are to me many things, brother; let what is yours be to you."
9 Esau said, "I have plenty, my brother. Let what is yours be yours."

9 וַיֹּ֥אמֶר עֵשָׂ֖ו יֶשׁ לִ֣י רָ֑ב אָחִ֕י יְהִ֥י לְךָ֖ אֲשֶׁר לָֽךְ

9 εἶπεν δὲ Ἠσαύ Ἔστιν μοι πολλά, ἀδελφέ· ἔστω σοι τὰ σά.

10 And Jacob said, "Not, please! If, please, I have found favor in your eyes, then take my gift from my hand; for therefore9 I have seen your face, like seeing the face of Elohim10, and you accepted me11.
10 Now Jacob said,‸ "If I have found grace before you, receive the gifts through my hands; on account of this I have seen your face as one would see the face of God, and you will be well pleased with me.6
10 Jacob said, "No, please! If I have found favor with you, then take my gift from my hand. For indeed I have seen your face, and it is like seeing the face of God, and you have accepted me.

11 Take, please, my blessing12 that has been brought to you, for Elohim has favored5 me, and for there is to me all." And he pressed him, and he took.
11 Take‸ my blessings which I brought to you, for God has had mercy on me, and there is to me all." And he forced him, and he took.
11 Please take my blessing that has been brought to you, because God has been gracious to me, and because I have everything." Jacob kept pressing him, and Esau took it.

12 And he said, "Let us break camp and let us go, and I will go in front of you."
12 And he said, "Having set out, let us go‸ on the straight."7
12 Then Esau said, "Let us set out and be on our way. I will go in front of you."

12 וַיֹּ֖אמֶר נִסְעָ֣ה וְנֵלֵ֑כָה וְאֵלְכָ֖ה לְנֶגְדֶּֽךָ

12 καὶ εἶπεν Ἀπάραντες πορευθῶμεν ἐπ’ εὐθεῖαν.

13 And he said to him, "My lord knows that the children are tender, and the flock and the herd that are nursing13 are on me; and should they beat14 them one day, all the flock will die.
13 Now he said to him, "My lord comes to know that the little children are more tender, and the sheep and the oxen are giving birth upon me; if therefore I hunt them down one day, all the cattle will die.8
13 Jacob said to him, "My lord knows that the children are young, and that I must care for the sheep, goats, and cattle that are nursing their young. If they are driven hard for one day, all the flock will die.

14 Let my lord, please, pass over before the face of his servant, and I, I will guide myself along at my gentleness15, at the foot of the work16 that is before my face and at the foot16 of the children, until I come to my lord to Seir."
14 Let my lord go ahead‸ in front of the servant; but I, I will grow strong on the way at the leisure of the going that is before me, and at the foot of the lads, until I come to my lord to Seir."9
14 Let my lord go on ahead of his servant. I will move along gently, at the pace of the livestock in front of me and at the pace of the children, until I come to my lord in Seir."

15 And Esau said, "Let me position, please, with you some of the people who are with me." And he said, "Why this? Let me find favor in the eyes of my lord."
15 Now Esau said, "I will leave behind‸ with you some of the people who are with me." Now he said, "Why this? It is sufficient that I have found grace before you, lord."
15 Esau said, "Please let me leave some of my people with you." Jacob said, "Why do that? Let me find favor with my lord."

16 And Esau returned on that day to his way, to Seir.
16 Now Esau turned back on that day to his way, to Seir.
16 That day Esau went back on his way to Seir.

16 וַיָּשָׁב֩ בַּיּ֨וֹם הַה֥וּא עֵשָׂ֛ו לְדַרְכּ֖וֹ שֵׂעִֽירָה

16 ἀπέστρεψεν δὲ Ἠσαὺ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ εἰς τὴν ὁδὸν αὐτοῦ εἰς Σηείρ.

17 And Jacob broke camp to Succoth, and built himself a house, and for his livestock he made booths; therefore he called the name of the place Succoth17.
17 And Jacob sets out to Tents10; and he made for himself there houses, and for his cattle he made tents; because of this he called the name of that place Tents.
17 Jacob set out for Succoth. There he built himself a house and made booths for his livestock. That is why he named the place Succoth.

18 And Jacob came complete18 to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, in his coming from Paddan-aram, and he encamped before the face of the city.
18 And Jacob came to Salem11, a city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Mesopotamia of Syria; and he pitched camp before the face of the city.
18 When Jacob came from Paddan-aram, he arrived safe and sound at the city of Shechem in the land of Canaan, and he camped in front of the city.

19 And he acquired the portion19 of the field where he had stretched out his tent, from the hand of the sons of Hamor20, father of Shechem, for a hundred qesitah21.
19 And he acquired the portion of the field where he made stand there his tent, from‸ Hamor, father of Shechem, for a hundred lambs12.
19 He bought the piece of the field where he had pitched his tent from the sons of Hamor, Shechem's father, for a hundred pieces of money.

20 And he stationed22 there an altar, and called to it El, Elohim of Israel23.
20 And he made stand there an altar, and called on‸ the God of Israel.13
20 There he set up an altar and named it "God, the God of Israel."

20 וַיַּצֶּב שָׁ֖ם מִזְבֵּ֑חַ וַיִּ֨קְרָא ל֔וֹ אֵ֖ל אֱלֹהֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל

20 καὶ ἔστησεν ἐκεῖ θυσιαστήριον καὶ ἐπεκαλέσατο τὸν θεὸν Ἰσραήλ.

  1. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 2, 6

חָצָה is the verb of 32:8, where Jacob halved the people, the flocks and the camels into two camps. Here the children are set out over three mothers' groups, and the verb is the same. The gloss holds (2), so the reader hears the night before in the morning's arrangements. The verb is the halving of an ox's price in Exod 21:35 and of the spoil in Num 31:27, 42.

  2. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "Leah and her children after, and Rachel and Joseph hindermost" (KJV) / "then Leah with her children, and Rachel and Joseph last of all" (RSV)

    Rulings 2, 6

אַחֲרֹנִים is the same word twice, "last" and "last." The KJV and RSV vary it to make a sequence of three. The Hebrew ranks only first against last, and the order among the last is told in vv. 6–7 (6). רִאשׁוֹן and אַחֲרוֹן are the pair of Isa 44:6 and 48:12, "I am first and I am last." Rashi: the dearer to him, the further behind.

  3. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 97, 91

The vassals of the Amarna letters write to Pharaoh, "at the feet of the king my lord seven times and seven times I fall." Jacob's prostration is the court's. Isaac blessed him with "let your mother's sons prostrate themselves to you" (27:29). Here the blessed brother prostrates himself to the other. פַּעַם is "turn" (97). The WPRB has "times."

  4. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Ruling 79

Every letter of וַיִּשָּׁקֵהוּ "and kissed him" carries a dot above it in the Masoretic text, one of the ten dotted places of the Torah (Avot de-Rabbi Natan A 34). The word is translated as written (79). The dots drew two readings. Sifre Numbers 69 has Rabbi Simeon ben Yohai: it is known that Esau hates Jacob, but at that hour his compassion was moved and he kissed him with all his heart. Genesis Rabbah 78:9 has Rabbi Yannai: he meant not to kiss (נָשַׁק) but to bite (נָשַׁךְ), and Jacob's neck turned to marble; so "they wept," the one for his neck and the other for his teeth. The embrace, the falling on the neck and the kiss return when the father runs to the son in Luke 15:20.

  5. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "the children which God hath graciously given thy servant" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 2, 95

חָנַן is the verb of חֵן "favor," the noun Jacob uses three times in the chapter (vv. 8, 10, 15): he seeks favor in Esau's eyes, and says that Elohim has favored him (vv. 5, 11). Verb and noun share the English as one root (95), so the chain is visible. With two objects it is to favor someone with something: "favor me with your Torah" (Ps 119:29). The verb is singular, so Elohim takes the capital (9).

  6. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Ruling 6

In v. 2 the order is "Rachel and Joseph"; here it is "Joseph… and Rachel," and the verb is singular before the two names. Rashi, after Genesis Rabbah 78:10: Joseph stepped in front of his mother to hide her from Esau's eyes. The reversal is kept (6).

  7. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 2, 6

מִי "who" asks here after a thing, as in "who is your name?" (Judg 13:17) and "who is the revolt of Jacob? is it not Samaria?" (Mic 1:5); the home gloss is kept. The camp is the gift sent ahead in droves with its herdsmen (32:14–22), and the word is the camp of the night before (32:8, 11) and of Mahanaim (32:3).

  8. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 2, 123

רָב is the adjective "vast" (123d, with no counted plural), standing as a noun: "there is to me a vast deal." In v. 11 Jacob answers with the same construction, "there is to me all" (כֹל). Rashi sets the two side by side: Esau says he has much, more than he needs; Jacob says he has all he needs. The WPRB has "plenty."

  9. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Ruling 128

כִּי עַל־כֵּן "for therefore" gives the reason as one already settled (18:5; 19:8; 38:26; Num 10:31), the construction of 128(i). The KJV keeps it ("for therefore I have seen thy face"); the RSV has "for truly."

  10. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "as though I had seen the face of God" (KJV) / "to see your face is like seeing the face of God" (RSV)

    Rulings 128, 129, 107

פְּנֵי אֱלֹהִים has no verb to agree with in its clause. Capitals go by the scene (128d, 129n), and in this scene Jacob twice names Elohim with a singular verb, "Elohim has favored" (vv. 5, 11): so the capital. The face is the word of Peniel, where Jacob saw elohim face to face (32:31), and of his plan, "perhaps he will lift my face" (32:21). The versions differ on whose face it is. The LXX has θεοῦ, the Vulgate Dei; Targum Onkelos softens it to "like seeing the face of the great ones"; Rashi, after the midrash, takes it of the angel he wrestled. The capital follows the scene and settles nothing more.

  11. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "thou wast pleased with me" (KJV) / "you have received me with favor" (RSV)

    Rulings 2, 39

רָצָה is the verb of a sacrifice accepted: "it shall be accepted for him" (Lev 1:4; 22:27; Amos 5:22). Mal 1:8 joins it to the face and the gift, as here: "offer it to your governor: will he accept you, or lift your face?" Jacob had planned to atone Esau's face with a gift (32:21). Here he says the gift was accepted. The gift is מִנְחָה, the word of Cain's and Abel's gifts (4:3–5).

  12. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 2, 109

Jacob calls the gift "my blessing," as Abigail calls hers (1 Sam 25:27) and as David and Naaman do (1 Sam 30:26; 2 Kgs 5:15). Esau had said, "he has taken my blessing" (לָקַח בִּרְכָתִי, 27:35–36), and paired it with the birthright (בְּכֹרָה / בְּרָכָה, 27:36). Now Jacob says "take my blessing" (קַח־נָא אֶת־בִּרְכָתִי), with the same verb and noun. "Blessing" and "bless" are one root (109).

  13. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Ruling 25

עָלוֹת is the participle of עוּל, said of ewes and cows with sucklings: the two nursing cows yoked to the ark (1 Sam 6:7, 10), David taken "from behind the nursing ewes" (Ps 78:71). Isa 40:11 has the nursing ones and the guiding of v. 14 together: "the nursing ones he will guide." "On me" is "my charge."

  14. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "if men should overdrive them one day" (KJV) / "if they are overdriven for one day" (RSV)

    Rulings 2, 25

דָּפַק is to beat or knock: the men of Gibeah beating on the door (Judg 19:22), the beloved knocking (Song 5:2). Here the herd is beaten along too fast. "Beat" keeps the blow; the KJV's "overdrive" names its result. The subject "they" is unnamed, the herdsmen or anyone. The WPRB has "driven hard."

  15. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "I will lead on softly" (KJV) / "I will lead on slowly" (RSV)

    Rulings 2, 25

נָהַל is to guide a flock to water and pasture: "he guides me beside waters of rest" (Ps 23:2); "you guided them in your strength" (Exod 15:13); Isa 40:11; 49:10. Here it is the hithpael, the shepherd guiding himself along with the flock. אַט is gentleness: Ahab "walked gently" (1 Kgs 21:27), the waters of Shiloah "go gently" (Isa 8:6), "deal gently for my sake with the young man" (2 Sam 18:5). "At my gentleness" keeps the noun and its suffix.

  16. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "according as the cattle that goeth before me and the children be able to endure" (KJV) / "according to the pace of the cattle which are before me and according to the pace of the children" (RSV)

    Rulings 2, 39

מְלָאכָה "work" is what a man has in his charge, livestock included: a neighbour's goods left in keeping (Exod 22:7, 10), Amalek's flocks "all the work" (1 Sam 15:9). The home gloss holds (2); the KJV's "cattle" names what the work is here. לְרֶגֶל "at the foot of" is the pace, and the body idiom is kept (39). Jacob told Laban "Adonai has blessed you at my foot" (30:30).

סֻכּוֹת is the plural of סֻכָּה "booth": Jacob makes "booths" and names the place "Booths." English cannot keep the name and the noun in one word, so the name is printed in its familiar form (18) and the pun is here (17). The Feast of Booths recalls the booths of the wilderness (Lev 23:42–43). Succoth is in the Jordan valley east of the river (Josh 13:27; Judg 8:5–16; Ps 60:8).

Expected: "Jacob came to Shalem, a city of Shechem" (KJV) / "Jacob came safely to the city of Shechem" (RSV)

    Rulings 1, 2

שָׁלֵם is read two ways. The LXX (εἰς Σαλημ πόλιν Σικιμων), the Vulgate (in Salem urbem Sychimorum) and the KJV take it as a place, Shalem. Targum Onkelos reads the adjective, "whole," and b. Shabbat 33b, followed by Rashi, says how: whole in his body, healed of the limp (32:32); whole in his wealth, after the gift; whole in his Torah. The OSHB tags the adjective, and its settled gloss "complete" is printed. It answers the vow of 28:21, "if I return in peace (בְשָׁלוֹם) to my father's house." English cannot print the name and the adjective together (1). The word returns in 34:21: "these men are complete with us."

Expected: "a parcel of a field" (KJV) / "the piece of land" (RSV)

    Rulings 2, 20, 95

This חֶלְקָה is not the "smoothness" of 27:16, though Strong's files the two under one number. It is the plot of the root חָלַק "divide, portion," whose noun is חֵלֶק "portion" (14:24; 31:14): "the portion of the field belonging to Boaz" (Ruth 2:3), "the portion of Naboth" (2 Kgs 9:21, 25), "one portion was rained on" (Amos 4:7). "Portion" keeps the word with its own root (95). The source tag is kept.

    Ruling 18

The name חֲמוֹר is the noun "donkey" (34:28; 49:14). The sons of Hamor reappear when Joseph's bones are buried in this plot (Josh 24:32), and "the men of Hamor, father of Shechem" in Judg 9:28.

Expected: "an hundred pieces of money" (KJV) / "a hundred pieces of money" (RSV)

    Rulings 5, 25

קְשִׂיטָה is a unit of value, found only here, at Josh 24:32 of the same purchase, and at Job 42:11, where each friend gives Job a qesitah and a gold ring. Its worth is unknown. The LXX (ἑκατὸν ἀμνῶν) and the Vulgate (centum agnis) have "a hundred lambs." b. Rosh Hashanah 26a has Rabbi Akiva saying that in Africa the coin called a ma'ah was called a qesitah. The word is transliterated, as the beka is (24:22). This is the second piece of Canaan a patriarch acquires, after Abraham's cave for four hundred shekels (23:16–20). Stephen's speech folds the two purchases together (Acts 7:16), and John 4:5 knows the plot "that Jacob gave to Joseph his son."

    Ruling 123

The hiphil of נָצַב is "station" (123d). It is the verb of a standing stone set up (35:14, 20), and only here does it take an altar. Elsewhere an altar is "built" (8:20; 12:7; 35:7).

  23. Decision↩ Back to the text

    Expected: "El-elohe-Israel" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 9, 107, 18, 46

The name has two readings. It is a name, "El, Elohim of Israel," or a sentence, "El is the Elohim of Israel." The comma keeps both. Elohim stands in apposition to El, a singular divine name, so it takes the capital (107). Israel is the name given at the Jabbok (32:29), here first used by Jacob, in a name for his own Elohim. וַיִּקְרָא־לוֹ is the construction "call to it [a name]" (the gloss note of קָרָא), and "it" is the altar (41). b. Megillah 18a reads it otherwise: "and El, the Elohim of Israel, called him [Jacob] El." The WPRB has "God, the God of Israel."

Ἀναβλέψας, "having looked up," the one verb the Greek uses for the Masoretic version's "lifted his eyes" (again at 33:5). ἐπιδιεῖλεν, "distributed," for "halved" (וַיַּחַץ): Jacob shares the children out to their mothers rather than splitting the company in two, as he did at 32:7. The Greek sets ἐπί, "over," before Leah and Rachel (the second ἐπί is Swete's, from Alexandrinus) and none before "the two servant-girls," so that the servant-girls can be read as the last of the children's mothers or as distributed with the children; the Masoretic version has "over" three times. It also adds "his brother" and the second "Jacob" (seeded), and has αὐτός, "he," Swete's text, before the four hundred men.

τὰς δύο παιδίσκας, "the two servant-girls," where the Masoretic version reads "the maids," with no number; the alignment does not seed δύο, and it is marked as a plus. The Greek has ἐποίησεν, "made," for "put" (וַיָּשֶׂם), τοὺς υἱοὺς αὐτῶν, "their sons," for "their children" (יַלְדֵיהֶן), and ὀπίσω, "behind," an adverb, for the first "last" (אַחֲרֹנִים), so that the order runs first, behind, last, where the Masoretic version has first, last, last.

The Greek has the kiss before the fall on the neck (περιλαβὼν αὐτὸν ἐφίλησεν καὶ προσέπεσεν), where the Masoretic version has "embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him," and adds ἀμφότεροι, "both" (seeded). φιλέω with a person as the object of a greeting is "kiss" (148b). In the Masoretic text the word for "and kissed him" (וַיִּשָּׁקֵהוּ) carries the scribes' dots over its letters, and Genesis Rabbah 78:9 records readings that the kiss was not whole-hearted, or that it was; the Greek kisses without reserve. προσπίπτω, "fall against," is the verb of falling at or against a person (Luke 8:28); "fall upon" is ἐπιπίπτω's.

ἠλέησεν, "has had mercy on," for the Masoretic version's "has favored" (חָנַן): the Greek gives the gift of the children as mercy, the noun of the verb being ἔλεος "mercy" (Luke 1:50, 54, 58), and again at 33:11. It has Τί, "What," for "Who" (מִי), here and at 33:8.

The Greek asks "What are these to you, all these camps that I have met?", with ταῦτα, "these," seeded as a plus and the camp in the plural, where the Masoretic version reads "Who to you is all this camp that I came upon?": the Greek counts the droves of 32:16–19 as camps. In the answer it adds "your servant" (seeded) and has ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς σου, κύριε, "in your eyes, lord," a direct address, for "in the eyes of my lord"; ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς is Swete's text from Alexandrinus, where the alignment's Greek reads otherwise.

    Rulings 52, 54, 143

The Greek lacks the Masoretic version's opening "Not, please!" (אַל־נָא, seeded) and the second "please." For "take my gift from my hand" it has δέξαι τὰ δῶρα διὰ τῶν ἐμῶν χειρῶν, "receive the gifts through my hands"; for "like seeing the face of Elohim," ὡς ἄν τις ἴδοι πρόσωπον θεοῦ, "as one would see the face of God," a potential optative; and for "and you accepted me," καὶ εὐδοκήσεις με, "and you will be well pleased with me," a future, the verb of the voice at the Jordan (Matt 3:17). The face that Jacob would propitiate at 32:20 and saw at the Figure of God (32:30) is the one word πρόσωπον here, so that the brother's face and the face of God meet in one verse, as in the Masoretic version.

Ἀπάραντες πορευθῶμεν ἐπ’ εὐθεῖαν, "Having set out, let us go on the straight," the straight road: the Greek has no words for the Masoretic version's "and I will go" (וְאֵלְכָה); the alignment seeds the lack before "let us go," but the words lacking stand after it, and the lack is marked there. For "in front of you" (לְנֶגְדֶּךָ) it has ἐπ’ εὐθεῖαν, the way straight ahead. In the Greek, Esau proposes that they go on together; in the Masoretic version he offers to lead. εὐθύς is the adjective of "make his paths straight" (Matt 3:3). πορευθῶμεν is Swete's text, where the alignment's Greek reads otherwise.

ὁ κύριός μου γινώσκει, "My lord comes to know," with γινώσκω's home gloss held in the present (144e). The Greek has ἁπαλώτερα, "more tender," the comparative for the Hebrew positive, and λοχεύονται ἐπ’ ἐμέ, "are giving birth upon me," where the Masoretic version reads "that are nursing are on me" (עָלוֹת עָלָי): the flocks are at the time of bearing, not of suckling. It has ἐὰν οὖν καταδιώξω αὐτούς, "if therefore I hunt them down," with οὖν, "therefore," which the Masoretic version lacks (marked as a plus), and the first person, where the Masoretic version reads "should they beat them" (וּדְפָקוּם), so that the overdriving would be Jacob's own; and τὰ κτήνη, "the cattle," for "the flock."

The Greek lacks "please" (seeded) and adds ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ, "on the way" (seeded). For the Masoretic version's "I will guide myself along" (אֶתְנַהֲלָה) it has ἐνισχύσω, "I will grow strong," the verb of Israel's name at 32:28; and for "at my gentleness, at the foot of the work that is before my face" it has one phrase, κατὰ σχολὴν τῆς πορεύσεως τῆς ἐναντίον μου, "at the leisure of the going that is before me," the pace of the march for the Hebrew's work (מְלָאכָה) of the flocks. τὰ παιδάρια, "the lads," for "the children," and εἰς Σηείρ, "to Seir" (Swete's spelling).

Σκηναί, "Tents," where the Masoretic version reads "Succoth" (סֻכּוֹת, "booths"): the Greek translates the name, and keeps its play, for the "tents" Jacob makes for his cattle are σκηναί too, as the Hebrew's "booths" are סֻכֹּת. A different name, printed as the Greek says it and marked (145f), at both ends of the verse. σκηνή is the Septuagint's word for the booths of the feast (Lev 23:42–43 "in tents") and the New Testament's for the feast itself (σκηνοπηγία, John 7:2). The Greek has ἀπαίρει, "sets out," in the present, οἰκίας, "houses," plural, for "a house," and adds ἐκεῖ, "there," and ἐκείνου, "that" (both seeded).

εἰς Σαλὴμ πόλιν Σικίμων, "to Salem, a city of Shechem," where the Masoretic version reads "came complete to the city of Shechem" (שָׁלֵם, "whole," that is, safe and sound): the Greek reads שָׁלֵם as the name of a town belonging to Shechem. Jubilees (30:1) and the Vulgate (in Salem urbem Sichimorum) read the same, and so do the KJV ("came to Shalem, a city of Shechem") and Luther; the RSV has "came safely," with Rashi, who reads "whole in his body, whole in his wealth, whole in his Torah" (after Genesis Rabbah 79:5). Σαλήμ is the name of Melchizedek's city (14:18; Heb 7:1–2), and the Greek does not say whether it is the same town. Σίκιμα, "Shechem," the city, is another Greek form of the name the Greek spells Συχέμ for Hamor's son (33:19); the same name in two forms, unmarked (145f; names table). Μεσοποταμία Συρίας, "Mesopotamia of Syria," for "Paddan-aram," prints as at 28:2, 6.

ἑκατὸν ἀμνῶν, "a hundred lambs," where the Masoretic version reads "a hundred qesitah" (קְשִׂיטָה), a unit of value found only here, at Josh 24:32 and at Job 42:11: the Greek reads it as a beast of the flock in all three places (Josh 24:32 ἀμνάδων, Job 42:11 ἀμνάδα), so the field is bought in lambs (149c). The Talmud records Rabbi Akiva's report that in Africa a coin is called qesitah (b. Rosh Hashanah 26a), the reading of the Masoretic version's money. The Greek also lacks "the sons of" before Hamor (seeded; παρά, "from," renders "from the hand of"), and has ἔστησεν, "made stand," for "had stretched out" his tent. Stephen tells of the tomb "that Abraham bought for a price of silver from the sons of Hamor in Shechem" (Acts 7:16).

The Masoretic version reads "and called to it El, Elohim of Israel": Jacob names the altar. The Greek has the middle ἐπεκαλέσατο, "called on," the verb of prayer to God (4:26; 12:8; 13:4; Acts 2:21; Rom 10:13), and τὸν θεὸν Ἰσραήλ, "the God of Israel": Jacob calls on the God whose name he now bears, and the altar is not named. The lack of "to it El" is marked (seeded, with the Hebrew word for "Elohim of," which the Greek's θεόν renders).
