1 And Joseph fell on the face of his father, and wept over him, and kissed him.
1 And Joseph, having fallen upon the face of his father, wept over him and kissed him.
1 Joseph fell on his father's face, wept over him, and kissed him.

1 וַיִּפֹּ֥ל יוֹסֵ֖ף עַל פְּנֵ֣י אָבִ֑יו וַיֵּ֥בְךְּ עָלָ֖יו וַיִּשַּׁק לֽוֹ

1 καὶ ἐπιπεσὼν Ἰωσὴφ ἐπὶ τὸ πρόσωπον τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ ἔκλαυσεν αὐτὸν καὶ ἐφίλησεν αὐτόν.

2 Joseph ordered his servants, the physicians, to embalm his father, and the physicians embalmed Israel.

3 And forty days were filled for him, for thus are filled the days of the embalming; and Egypt2 wept for him seventy days.
3 And he filled them forty days, for thus are numbered the days of the burial; and Egypt mourned him seventy days.2
3 They took forty days for it, for that is how long embalming takes. And Egypt wept for him for 70 days.

4 And the days of his weeping passed over, and Joseph spoke to the house of Pharaoh, saying, "If, please, I have found favor in your eyes, speak, please, in the ears of Pharaoh3, saying,
4 Now inasmuch as the days of the mourning passed by, Joseph spoke to the potentates of Pharaoh, saying, "If I have found grace before you, speak‸ concerning me in the ears of Pharaoh, saying,
4 When the days of weeping for him had passed, Joseph spoke to Pharaoh's household. He said, "If I have found favor with you, please speak to Pharaoh for me. Tell him,

4 Ἐπειδὴ δὲ παρῆλθον αἱ ἡμέραι τοῦ πένθους, ἐλάλησεν Ἰωσὴφ πρὸς τοὺς δυνάστας Φαραὼ λέγων Εἰ εὗρον χάριν ἐναντίον ὑμῶν, λαλήσατε περὶ ἐμοῦ εἰς τὰ ὦτα Φαραὼ λέγοντες

5 'My father made me swear, saying, "Look, I am dying; in my grave that I delved4 for myself in the land of Canaan, there you shall bury me." And now, let me go up, please, and bury my father, and I will return.'"
5 'My father made me swear, saying,‸ "In the tomb that I dug for myself in the land of Canaan, there you shall bury me." Now therefore, having gone up‸, I will bury my father, and I will go away.'"3
5 'My father made me swear an oath. He said, "Look, I am about to die. In the grave that I dug for myself in the land of Canaan, there you are to bury me." Now please let me go up and bury my father, and I will return.'"

6 And Pharaoh said, "Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear."
6 Pharaoh said, "Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear."

6 וַיֹּ֖אמֶר פַּרְעֹ֑ה עֲלֵ֛ה וּקְבֹ֥ר אֶת אָבִ֖יךָ כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר הִשְׁבִּיעֶֽךָ

7 And Joseph went up to bury his father; and there went up with him all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt,
7 And Joseph went up to bury his father; and there went up together with him all the servants of Pharaoh, and the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt,
7 Joseph went up to bury his father. All Pharaoh's servants went up with him, the elders of his household and all the elders of the land of Egypt,

8 and all the house of Joseph, and his brothers, and the house of his father. Solely their little ones and their flock and their herd they forsook in the land of Goshen.
8 and all the whole household of Joseph, and his brothers, and all his paternal house, and his kindred. And‸ the sheep and the oxen they reserved in the land of Goshen.4
8 along with all of Joseph's household, his brothers, and his father's household. They left only their little ones and their flocks and herds in the land of Goshen.

9 And there went up with him also chariotry, also horsemen5; and the camp was very heavy.
9 And there went up together with him both chariots and horsemen; and the camp came to be very great.
9 Chariots and horsemen also went up with him. It was a very large company.

9 וַיַּ֣עַל עִמּ֔וֹ גַּם רֶ֖כֶב גַּם פָּרָשִׁ֑ים וַיְהִ֥י הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֖ה כָּבֵ֥ד מְאֹֽד

10 And they came as far as the threshing floor of the boxthorn6, which is beyond the Jordan, and they lamented there a lamentation great and very heavy; and he made for his father a mourning of seven days7.
10 And they came up to the threshing floor of Atad, which is across the Jordan, and they beat their breasts for him‸ with a breast-beating great and very strong; and they made the mourning for his father seven days.5
10 They came to the threshing floor of the boxthorn, which is beyond the Jordan. There they mourned with a great and very heavy lament, and Joseph held a time of mourning for his father for seven days.

11 And the dweller of the land, the Canaanite, saw the mourning at the threshing floor of the boxthorn6, and they said, "This is a heavy mourning for Egypt2." Therefore one called its name Abel-mizraim8, which is beyond the Jordan.
11 And the dwellers of the land of Canaan saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, and they said, "This is a great mourning for the Egyptians." Therefore one called its name Mourning of Egypt, which is across the Jordan.6
11 When the Canaanites who lived in the land saw the mourning at the threshing floor of the boxthorn, they said, "This is a heavy mourning for Egypt." That is why people called the place Abel-mizraim. It is beyond the Jordan.

12 And his sons did for him thus, as he had commanded them.
12 And his sons did for him thus‸, and they buried him there.
12 His sons did for him as he had commanded them.

12 καὶ ἐποίησαν αὐτῷ οὕτως οἱ υἱοὶ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἔθαψαν αὐτὸν ἐκεῖ.

13 And his sons lifted him to the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of the Machpelah, which Abraham acquired—the field—for a tenure of a grave from Ephron the Hittite, on the face of Mamre9.
13 And his sons took him up into the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave‸, the double one, which Abraham acquired—the cave—for an acquisition of a tomb from Ephron the Hittite, opposite Mamre.7
13 His sons carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, facing Mamre. Abraham had bought the field from Ephron the Hittite to hold as a grave.

14 And Joseph returned to Egypt, he and his brothers, and all who had gone up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father.
14 And Joseph turned back to Egypt, he and his brothers, and‸ those who had gone up together to bury his father‸.
14 After he had buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, with his brothers and all who had gone up with him to bury his father.

15 And the brothers of Joseph saw that their father was dead, and they said, "Suppose10 Joseph is hostile to us, and returning, returns to us all the bad that we dealt out11 to him!"
15 Now the brothers of Joseph, having seen that their father had died, said, "Lest Joseph remember wrong against us, and requite us with a requital for all the bad things that we displayed to him!"8
15 When Joseph's brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, "What if Joseph is hostile to us, and repays us in full for all the bad that we did to him?"

16 And they commanded to Joseph12, saying, "Your father commanded before his death, saying,
16 And they came up to Joseph, saying, "Your father made us swear before he deceased, saying,9
16 They sent word to Joseph, saying, "Before he died, your father gave this order:

17 'So you shall say to Joseph: "Ah, lift, please, the revolt of your brothers and their sin, for they dealt out11 bad to you."' And now, lift, please, the revolt of the servants of the Elohim of your father13." And Joseph wept when they spoke to him.
17 'Thus say to Joseph:‸ "Let go‸ for them the injustice‸ and their sin, for they displayed evil things to you."' And now, receive‸ the injustice of the attendants of the God of your father." And Joseph wept when they spoke to him.10
17 'This is what you are to say to Joseph: "Please, forgive the wrongdoing of your brothers and their sin, for they did bad to you."' Now please forgive the wrongdoing of the servants of the God of your father." Joseph wept when they spoke to him.

18 His brothers also came and fell down before him. They said, "Here we are. We are your slaves."

    Rulings 2, 74

רֹפְאִים is the participle of רָפָא "heal," the healers, physicians (2 Chr 16:12; Jer 8:22). חָנַט "embalm" is used only of Jacob and Joseph (vv. 2–3, 26); elsewhere it is the ripening of figs (Song 2:13). Egyptian embalming took forty days of drying with natron and a full period of seventy days to burial (Herodotus 2.86; Diodorus 1.91), the two numbers of v. 3. Israel is the only patriarch embalmed, and the only one to be carried home from Egypt.

  2. Decision↩ Back to the text

    Expected: "the Egyptians" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 2, 134, 135

מִצְרַיִם here takes a plural verb, the land standing for its people (41:55–56; 45:2). The source tags the word H4713 "Egyptian"; the tag is kept and "Egypt" printed, as at 41:55–56 and 45:2 (134l, 135o). The mourning of seventy days is two days short of the seventy-two that Diodorus (1.72) reports for a king.

    Ruling 74

Joseph speaks to the house of Pharaoh rather than to Pharaoh, in the courtier's form of request ("if, please, I have found favor in your eyes," 47:29; 33:10). The text does not say why. Rashi suggests that a mourner did not go before the king; Genesis Rabbah 100:4 that Joseph was unshaven in mourning. The request repeats Jacob's oath (47:29–31) in Jacob's words.

    Rulings 2, 25

כָּרִיתִי is "I delved," the verb of digging a pit or grave (26:25; Exod 21:33; Ps 7:16). There is a homograph כָּרָה "buy, trade" (Deut 2:6; Hos 3:2; Job 6:27), and Targum Onkelos ("which I prepared") and Rashi (after Genesis Rabbah 100:5) give both: Jacob bought his share of the cave from Esau. The account of 23:3–20 is a purchase by Abraham, and Jacob's own words at 47:30 and 49:29–32 do not mention digging. The verb's home gloss is printed, and the purchase stays in this note.

"Chariotry" (רֶכֶב) and "horsemen" (פָּרָשִׁים) are the pair that will pursue Israel to the sea (Exod 14:9, 17–18, 23, 26; 15:19). Here they escort Israel's body out of Egypt to the land, in honour. The camp (מַחֲנֶה) "very heavy" is the weight (כָּבֵד) of the procession, and v. 10 makes the lamentation heavy too.

Expected: "the threshingfloor of Atad" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 18, 2

אָטָד has the article, so it is a noun, not a name: "the boxthorn," the thorny shrub of Jotham's fable (Judg 9:14–15) and of Ps 58:10. The KJV and RSV print it as a place name, "Atad." A threshing floor was an open, level place where a large company could gather (2 Sam 6:6; 24:16–25). Rashi, after b. Sotah 13a, has the kings of Canaan and Ishmael hang their crowns on Jacob's coffin like a hedge of thorns around a threshing floor. "Beyond the Jordan" (בְּעֵבֶר הַיַּרְדֵּן) is usually east of the river (Deut 1:1), so the route went round by the east, as the later Israelites did. The Hebrew does not say from which side the writer speaks.

The mourning is described three times with three words: סָפַד "lament" and its noun מִסְפֵּד "lamentation" for the loud wailing, and אֵבֶל "mourning" (133a) for the rite of seven days. Seven days are the mourning of Sir 22:12 and 1 Sam 31:13, and of the Jewish shiva. Joseph is the subject of "he made," by the singular verb.

    Rulings 17, 18, 110, 133

The Canaanites say אֵבֶל כָּבֵד "a heavy mourning," and the place is called אָבֵל מִצְרַיִם. אָבֵל means "meadow, watercourse" in place names (Abel-meholah, Judg 7:22; Abel-beth-maacah, 2 Sam 20:14), and the narrator hears אֵבֶל "mourning" in it: "Mourning of Egypt." English cannot keep both, so the pun is here (17). The name is printed whole, "Abel-mizraim," as one compound, and so does not take Abel's name (הֶבֶל, 4:2); ruling 110 applies to the form "Abel" if the meadow word stands alone (2 Sam 20:18).

    Ruling 2

נָשָׂא keeps its home gloss "lift," which holds carrying (the row); "carry" is סָבַל's (49:15). The burial follows Jacob's charge of 49:29–32 word for word, so v. 12 can say "as he had commanded them." Acts 7:16 gives Shechem as the burial place of "our fathers," combining this cave with Jacob's purchase at Shechem (33:19) and Joseph's burial there (Josh 24:32).

לוּ is the particle of a wish, "if only" (17:18; 23:13; 30:34), and of a condition contrary to fact (Judg 13:23; Deut 32:29). Here it introduces what the brothers fear, a supposition. "If only Joseph were hostile to us" would print the reverse of the sense, so ruling 57 yields the home gloss and the supposition is printed: "Suppose." The row lists 50:15 with the wishes; the split by construction is ruled (136). הָשֵׁב יָשִׁיב is the infinitive absolute with the hiphil of שׁוּב "return" (128b), kept doubled as "returning, returns" (126g, 133e).

  11. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "which we did unto him" (KJV) / "which we did to him" (RSV)

    Rulings 2, 20

גָּמַל is "wean" in its row (21:8), whose standing note leaves "deal out, repay" as a split by construction to be declared when reached (50:15, 17; 1 Sam 24:18; Ps 13:6; 103:10). With a deed as its object it is to deal out, to do to someone in full, good or bad: "you have dealt out good to me, and I have dealt out bad to you" (1 Sam 24:18). The packet shows no earlier printing of this construction (unknown). "Dealt out" is printed in vv. 15 and 17, and the split is ruled (136).

    Ruling 2

וַיְצַוּוּ אֶל־יוֹסֵף "and they commanded to Joseph": they sent a charge by others, since the next verse is their message. The KJV supplies "sent a messenger." No such command of Jacob is recorded. b. Yevamot 65b draws from this verse that one may alter the truth for the sake of peace; Rashi says the brothers changed the words "for the sake of peace, for Jacob had not commanded thus, since Joseph was not suspected in his eyes."

  13. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 2, 132, 134

אָנָּא "Ah" is a particle of urgent entreaty (Exod 32:31; Ps 116:4; 118:25). "Lift… the revolt" is to forgive it, the sense of נָשָׂא with guilt (4:13; Exod 34:7). The brothers name their wrong with the two words of the core table, פֶּשַׁע "revolt" and חַטָּאת "sin," and call themselves "the servants of the Elohim of your father." Bare אֱלֹהִים in vv. 17 and 19 has no agreeing verb; it is capitalised because Joseph uses Elohim with a singular verb in the same scene (v. 20), as at 33:10 and 41:38 (132b, 134i). עֶבֶד is "servant" in a title of divine service (34).

Expected: "Behold, we be thy servants" (KJV) / "Behold, we are your servants" (RSV)

    Rulings 2, 37, 88, 34

הִנֶּנּוּ is the particle הִנֵּה "look" with the suffix "us," the plural of הִנֵּנִי "Here I am" (22:1; 46:2). It is printed "Here we are," as the singular is printed "Here I am," a declared construction (124i) apart from the home gloss "look." The brothers offer themselves לַעֲבָדִים "for slaves," as they did at 44:9, 16, 33; the עֶבֶד split gives "slave" for persons offered to be owned (34), against "servants" of Elohim in v. 17. The prostration fulfils Joseph's dreams once more (37:7–10).

    Rulings 8, 2, 132

"Am I in the place of Elohim?" are Jacob's words to Rachel at 30:2. There they refused a power Jacob did not have (to give children); here they refuse a judgment Joseph will not take. תַּחַת is "in place of" by construction (4:25; 22:13). The question is printed as a question; כִּי "for" before it gives the ground of "do not fear."

  16. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 2, 6, 37

The verse sets one verb twice against itself: "you reckoned bad… Elohim reckoned it for good." חָשַׁב is the verb of planning and accounting (15:6; 31:15), and the feminine suffix of חֲשָׁבָהּ "reckoned it" points to the bad, רָעָה: Elohim took the brothers' bad and reckoned it as good. "To keep alive" is the hiphil of חָיָה, the word of 45:5–7, "for keeping alive (מִחְיָה) Elohim sent me before you… to keep you alive for a great escape." The verse is the narrator's last theological word in Genesis, and Rom 8:28 is often read with it.

"Spoke on their heart" (דִּבֶּר עַל־לֵב) is the idiom of reassurance and courtship: Shechem to Dinah (34:3), the Levite to his concubine (Judg 19:3), Boaz to Ruth (Ruth 2:13), Adonai to Israel (Hos 2:16; Isa 40:2, "speak on the heart of Jerusalem"). The idiom of the body is kept (guide §4.12). "Provide for" is כּוּל, as Joseph promised at 45:11 and did at 47:12.

Expected: "children of the third generation" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 2, 39

שִׁלֵּשִׁים "thirds" is a plural noun of the root of שָׁלוֹשׁ "three": the third generation from the father, here Ephraim's great-grandsons, counting Joseph as the first. The word returns in the Decalogue, "attending to the iniquity of fathers on sons, on thirds and on fourths" (Exod 20:5; 34:7; Num 14:18). The KJV and RSV add "generation." "Born on the knees of Joseph" is the gesture of adoption (30:3; 48:12): Joseph takes Machir's sons as his own, and Machir later stands for a clan of Manasseh (Num 26:29; Judg 5:14).

  19. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 123, 126, 133

פָּקֹד יִפְקֹד is the infinitive absolute with the qal of פָּקַד "attend to" (123b), kept doubled as in "dying, he shall be made to die" (126g, 133e). The words are repeated in v. 25 and become the watchword of the Exodus: Adonai says to Moses "attending, I have attended to you" (Exod 3:16), the elders believe "that Adonai had attended to the sons of Israel" (Exod 4:31), and Moses takes Joseph's bones, quoting this verse (Exod 13:19). Heb 11:22 counts the charge about his bones as Joseph's faith. "He swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob" is the first time the three are named together in an oath formula (Exod 32:13; Deut 1:8).

  20. Decision↩ Back to the text

    Expected: "a coffin" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 2, 3

אָרוֹן is a chest or box: the collection chest of the temple (2 Kgs 12:10–11) and the ark of the covenant (Exod 25:10–22; Num 10:33). Here it is Joseph's coffin, the only use of the word for a burial chest. One English word is printed for every use, so that Genesis ends with Joseph's bones in a chest in Egypt and Exodus raises another chest in the wilderness. The rabbis heard it so: b. Sotah 13a and the Mekhilta (Beshallach, petichta) tell that Israel carried two chests through the wilderness, Joseph's and the ark of the Presence, and said "this one kept what is written in that one." "Box" is תֵּבָה's (6:14; Exod 2:3). וַיִּישֶׂם is an active form with no expressed subject, "and one put [him]"; English says "he was put," as the KJV and RSV do. The book ends with Joseph's death in Egypt and the promise of the land (v. 24). The WPRB has "coffin."

τοῖς ἐνταφιασταῖς, "the undertakers," where the Masoretic version reads "the healers" (הָרֹפְאִים): the Greek names Joseph's servants by the work they do, those who make the body ready for burial, and its verb ἐνταφιάζω is the one used of Jesus' body (Matt 26:12; John 19:40, "as is the custom of the Jews to prepare for burial"), where the Masoretic version reads "embalm."

Swete prints καὶ ἐπλήρωσεν αὐτοὺς τεσσεράκοντα ἡμέρας, "And he filled them forty days," with Vaticanus, where Rahlfs reads ἐπλήρωσαν αὐτοῦ, "they filled his forty days," near the Masoretic version's "And forty days were filled for him." As printed, Joseph is the subject and the undertakers the object: he kept them at their work forty days. The reading is confirmed on the scan of Swete's page (Vaticanus) and translated as printed. οὕτως γὰρ καταριθμοῦνται αἱ ἡμέραι τῆς ταφῆς, "for thus are numbered the days of the burial," for "thus are filled the days of the embalming."

The Greek lacks "Look, I am dying" in the father's words (seeded) and both "please" (seeded). ἀναβὰς θάψω, "having gone up, I will bury," for "let me go up, please, and bury." Swete prints ἀπελεύσομαι, "I will go away," with Vaticanus, where Rahlfs reads ἐπανελεύσομαι, "I will come back," and the Masoretic version "I will return": in Swete's text Joseph asks leave to go, and says nothing of his return.

πᾶσα ἡ πανοικία, "all the whole household," and ἡ οἰκία ἡ πατρικὴ αὐτοῦ, "his paternal house," with a second "all" (seeded). Swete adds καὶ ἡ συγγενία αὐτοῦ, "and his kindred," with Vaticanus, where Rahlfs has no such words; it is marked as a plus. The Greek lacks the Masoretic version's "Solely their little ones" (רַק טַפָּם), which the alignment does not seed; the lack is marked: in the Greek only the flocks and herds stay behind. The sheep and the oxen are "reserved," ὑπελίποντο.

ἅλωνα Ἀτάδ, "the threshing floor of Atad," where the Masoretic version reads "the threshing floor of the boxthorn" (הָאָטָד, with the article): the Greek takes the common noun as a name and transliterates it, marked as a name. The Greek adds αὐτόν, "for him," and lacks "there" (both seeded). ἐκόψαντο … κοπετόν, "they beat their breasts … with a breast-beating," keeps the Masoretic version's figure of verb and noun; ἰσχυρόν, "strong," for "heavy." Swete prints ἐποίησαν, "they made," with Vaticanus, where Rahlfs and the Masoretic version have "he made."

The Greek names the place by the mourning: Πένθος Αἰγύπτου, "Mourning of Egypt," where the Masoretic version transliterates Abel-mizraim; the name translated is marked (153b, as "City of Heroes," 46:28). The Masoretic version hears אָבֵל "mourning" in the place name (אָבֵל, "meadow," elsewhere), and the Greek writes only the mourning. οἱ κάτοικοι τῆς γῆς Χανάαν, "the dwellers of the land of Canaan," for "the dweller of the land, the Canaanite"; πένθος μέγα, "a great mourning," for "a heavy mourning"; τοῖς Αἰγυπτίοις, "for the Egyptians," for "for Egypt." Swete prints ἴδον for εἶδον.

τὸ σπήλαιον τὸ διπλοῦν, "the double cave," where the Masoretic version reads "the cave of the field of the Machpelah": the name translated, marked as at 23:9 and 49:30, and "of the field" lacking (seeded). Abraham acquired "the cave," τὸ σπήλαιον, where the Masoretic version reads "the field," here and at 49:30.

Μή ποτε μνησικακήσῃ ἡμῖν Ἰωσήφ, "Lest Joseph remember wrong against us," where the Masoretic version reads "Suppose Joseph is hostile to us": the brothers' anxious μή ποτε is "lest" (153d, 154g). ἀνταπόδομα ἀνταποδῷ, "requite with a requital," is the Greek's form for the Masoretic version's "returning, returns," a standard equivalence (143). Swete prints Μή ποτε as two words where Rahlfs reads μήποτε.

παρεγένοντο πρὸς Ἰωσήφ, "they came up to Joseph," where the Masoretic version reads "they commanded to Joseph" (וַיְצַוּוּ): the Greek has them come in person, and its ὥρκισεν, "made swear," stands for the Masoretic version's "commanded." The verb has no object in the Greek; "us" is supplied and set in italics as a supplied word (guide §7), since the brothers speak of an oath laid on them.

The Greek lacks "Ah" and both "please" (seeded). εἴπατε, "say," an imperative, for "you shall say." Ἄφες αὐτοῖς τὴν ἀδικίαν, "Let go for them the injustice," where the Masoretic version reads "lift the revolt of your brothers": the brothers are "them," and the Greek has no "of your brothers" (אַחֶיךָ), which the alignment does not seed; the lack is marked. ἀδικία, "injustice," stands for "revolt" (פֶּשַׁע) here and in the second plea, and ἀφίημι, "let go," is the verb of Matt 6:12 (144d). In the second plea the Greek has δέξαι, "receive," for "lift."

Οἵδε ἡμεῖς οἰκέται, "Here we are, domestics," where the Masoretic version reads "Here we are, yours for slaves": the Greek has no word for "yours" (לְךָ), which the alignment does not seed, and the lack is marked; οἰκέτης is the household slave (Luke 16:13).

τοῦ γὰρ θεοῦ ἐγώ εἰμι, "for I am God's," where the Masoretic version reads "for am I in the place of Elohim?" The Greek has no question and no "in the place of" (תַּחַת): Joseph does not refuse to stand where God stands; he says whose he is. Rahlfs reads τοῦ γὰρ θεοῦ εἰμι ἐγώ, the same words in another order; Swete prints εἰμί with a stray mark.

The Greek adds "concerning me" (seeded) and has the plural "evil things … good things." ὅπως ἂν γενηθῇ ὡς σήμερον, "so that it may come to be as today," for "so as to do as this day"; ἵνα τραφῇ λαὸς πολύς, "so that many people may be fed," for "to keep alive a vast people," where Swete prints τραφῇ with Vaticanus and Rahlfs reads διατραφῇ, "be sustained."

The Greek adds λέγων, "saying," and, in the oath, ὁ θεὸς τοῖς πατράσιν ἡμῶν, "God … to our fathers": one seeded span, which English must split around the verb "swore," so it is marked as two pluses, "God" and "to our fathers." ἐπισκοπῇ δὲ ἐπισκέψεται, "but God will visit you with a visitation," the dative noun for the Masoretic version's "attending, will attend" (a standard equivalence), with δέ "but." ἐπισκοπή is the visitation of Luke 19:44, "you did not come to know the kairos of your visitation."

Ἐν τῇ ἐπισκοπῇ ᾗ ἐπισκέψεται ὑμᾶς ὁ θεός, "In the visitation with which God will visit you," where the Masoretic version reads "Elohim, attending, will attend to you": the Greek makes the visitation the time of the charge. καὶ συνανοίσετε τὰ ὀστᾶ μου ἐντεῦθεν μεθ᾽ ὑμῶν, "you shall also carry up together my bones from here with you" ("with you" seeded). Exod 13:19 and Heb 11:22 recall the charge.

ἐτῶν ἑκατὸν δέκα, "of a hundred ten years," for "a son of a hundred and ten years," a standard equivalence (154e). καὶ ἔθαψαν αὐτόν, "and they buried him," where the Masoretic version reads "and they embalmed him," and ἔθηκαν, "they set him," active, for "he was put." ἡ σορός, "the coffin," the burial urn or chest of the Greek world and the bier of Luke 7:14, where the Masoretic version reads "the chest" (אָרוֹן, 136b); the Greek does not use κιβωτός, the chest of Noah and of the covenant (144a), so Joseph's coffin and the chest of the covenant are two words here, one in the Masoretic version.
