1 And Joseph was not able to hold himself in1 before all those stationed by him, and he called, "Bring out every man from me!" And no man stood with him when Joseph made himself known to his brothers.
1 Joseph could not hold himself in before all those standing by him, and he called out, "Have everyone go out from me!" And no one stood with him when Joseph made himself known to his brothers.

2 And he gave his voice in weeping; and Egypt2 heard, and the house of Pharaoh heard.
2 And he let go his voice with weeping; now all the Egyptians heard, and it came to be audible into the house of Pharaoh.2
2 He raised his voice in weeping. Egypt heard it, and Pharaoh's household heard it.

3 And Joseph said to his brothers, "I am Joseph. Is my father still living?" And his brothers were not able to answer him, for they were alarmed3 before his face.
3 Now Joseph said to his brothers, "I am Joseph, your brother, whom you sold to Egypt. Is my father still living?" And the brothers were not able to answer him; for they were troubled‸.3
3 Joseph said to his brothers, "I am Joseph. Is my father still alive?" But his brothers could not answer him, for they were alarmed at being before him.

4 And Joseph said to his brothers, "Approach me, please." And they approached. And he said, "I am Joseph your brother, whom you sold to Egypt.
4 ‸‸And he said, "I am Joseph your brother, whom you sold‸ to Egypt.4
4 Then Joseph said to his brothers, "Please come near to me." And they came near. He said, "I am your brother Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt.

5 And now, do not be pained, and let it not flare in your eyes that you sold me hither; for it was for keeping alive4 that Elohim sent me before your face.
5 Now then, do not be grieved, nor let it appear hard to you that you sold me here; for it was for life that God sent me before you.5
5 But now, do not be pained, and do not be angry with yourselves that you sold me here. For it was to keep alive that God sent me ahead of you.

6 For these two years the hunger has been in the inward part of the land, and there are still five years in which there is no ploughing and harvest.
6 For this is the second year of famine on‸ the land, and there are still remaining five years in which there will be no ploughing nor mowing.6
6 For the famine has been in the land for two years now, and there are still five years in which there will be no plowing and no harvest.

7 And Elohim sent me before your face to put for you a remnant in the land, and to keep alive for you, for a great escape5.
7 For God sent me before you, to reserve a remnant of you on the land, and to nourish a great residue of you.7
7 God sent me ahead of you to make sure you have a remnant in the land, and to keep alive for you, for a great escape.

8 And now, it was not you who sent me hither, but the Elohim6; and he put me for a father to Pharaoh, and for lord to all his house, and ruling in all the land of Egypt.
8 Now then, it is not you who have sent me here, but rather God; and he made me as a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house, and ruler of all the land of Egypt.8
8 So now, it was not you who sent me here, but God. He has made me a father to Pharaoh, lord of all his household, and ruler over all the land of Egypt.

12 And look, your eyes are seeing, and the eyes of my brother Benjamin, that it is my mouth that is speaking to you.
12 Look, your eyes are looking, and the eyes of Benjamin my brother, that it is my mouth that is speaking to you.12
12 Look, your own eyes can see, and so can the eyes of my brother Benjamin, that it is my own mouth speaking to you.

13 Report, then, to my father all my glory that is in Egypt, and as many things as you saw; and, having been quick, bring down my father here."13

14 And he fell on the neck9 of Benjamin his brother and wept; and Benjamin wept on his neck.
14 And, having fallen upon the neck of Benjamin his brother, he fell upon him; and Benjamin wept on his neck.14
14 Then Joseph threw his arms around the neck of his brother Benjamin and wept, and Benjamin wept on Joseph's neck.

15 And he kissed all his brothers and wept on them; and after that his brothers spoke with him.
15 And, having kissed warmly all his brothers, he wept on them; and after these things his brothers spoke with him.15
15 He kissed all his brothers and wept over them. After that his brothers talked with him.

16 And the voice was heard in the house of Pharaoh, saying, "The brothers of Joseph have come." And it was well in the eyes of Pharaoh and in the eyes of his servants.
16 And the voice was noised abroad into the house of Pharaoh, saying, "The brothers of Joseph have arrived." Now Pharaoh rejoiced, and his attendants.16
16 The news was heard in Pharaoh's house: "Joseph's brothers have come." This pleased Pharaoh and his servants.

21 And the sons of Israel did thus; and Joseph gave them wagons according to the mouth of Pharaoh, and gave them provision for the way.
21 Now the sons of Israel did thus; now Joseph gave them wagons according to the things said by Pharaoh the king, and gave them provision for the way.21
21 The sons of Israel did so. Joseph gave them wagons as Pharaoh had ordered, and he gave them provisions for the journey.

23 And to his father he sent according to the same things: ten donkeys lifting of all the good things of Egypt, and ten mules lifting‸ loaves for his father for the way.23
23 And to his father he sent this: ten donkeys carrying the best things of Egypt, and ten female donkeys carrying grain and bread and food for his father for the journey.

24 And he sent away his brothers, and they went; and he said to them, "Do not be stirred up12 on the way."
24 Now he sent out his brothers, and they went; and he said to them, "Do not be angry on the way."24
24 Then he sent his brothers away, and they went. He said to them, "Do not get stirred up on the way."

25 And they went up from Egypt, and came to the land of Canaan, to Jacob their father.
25 And they went up from Egypt, and came to the land of Canaan, to Jacob their father.
25 They went up from Egypt and came to the land of Canaan, to their father Jacob.

26 And they told him, saying, "Joseph is still living, and indeed13 he is ruling in all the land of Egypt." And his heart grew numb, for he did not believe them.
26 And they announced to him, saying,‸ "Your son Joseph lives, and this one rules all the land of Egypt." And the understanding of Jacob was beside itself, for he did not believe them.25
26 They told him, "Joseph is still alive, and in fact he is ruling over all the land of Egypt!" But Jacob's heart went numb, for he did not believe them.

27 And they spoke to him all the words of Joseph that he had spoken to them; and he saw the wagons that Joseph had sent to lift him; and the spirit of Jacob their father lived14.
27 Now they spoke to him all the things said by Joseph, as many as he said to them; now, having seen the wagons that Joseph sent so as to take him up, the spirit of Jacob their father rekindled.26
27 They told him all the words that Joseph had spoken to them, and Jacob saw the wagons that Joseph had sent to carry him. Then the spirit of their father Jacob came to life.

28 And Israel said, "Enough15! Still Joseph my son is living. Let me go and see him before I die."
28 Now Israel said, "Great it is to me, if still my son Joseph lives; having gone, I will see him before I die."27
28 Israel said, "Enough! My son Joseph is still alive. Let me go and see him before I die."

  1. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 2, 37

The hithpael of אָפַק is the verb of 43:31: there Joseph wept in his room, washed his face, "held himself in," and ordered the bread served. Now he cannot. "Before all those stationed by him" (לְכֹל הַנִּצָּבִים עָלָיו) are his Egyptian attendants. His order uses the hiphil of יָצָא, "bring out," so the Egyptians are put out of the room before the brothers are told. Rashi: he could not bear that the Egyptians should stand by and see his brothers put to shame when he made himself known. The hithpael of יָדַע, "made himself known," is reflexive, the stem of Num 12:6 ("in a vision I make myself known to him").

  2. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "the Egyptians … heard" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 2, 18, 134

The Hebrew is מִצְרַיִם, "Egypt," with a plural verb, the land standing for its people, as at 41:55–56. The source tags this token as the gentilic H4713 ("Egyptian"), and the tag is kept and logged as there (134l); the word printed is the name the text has. The weeping is heard as far as Pharaoh's house, which v. 16 takes up ("the voice was heard in the house of Pharaoh").

The niphal of בָּהַל is to be alarmed, shaken with sudden fear: the chiefs of Edom (Exod 15:15), Saul before the medium (1 Sam 28:21), "my bones are alarmed" (Ps 6:3). The root also has a sense of haste (Esth 6:14; Prov 28:22; Eccl 5:1), the rush of panic. "Dismay" belongs to חִתָּה and חַת (133a). "Before his face" is מִפָּנָיו, "from his face": the alarm comes from the sight of him.

מִחְיָה is a noun from the verb חָיָה, "keeping alive": food that keeps life going (Judg 6:4; 17:10), a little reviving (Ezra 9:8–9), even the live flesh of a sore (Lev 13:10, 24). Joseph's speech chains the root: "for keeping alive Elohim sent me" (v. 5), and "to keep alive for you" (v. 7, the hiphil). The chain is kept (37) by giving the noun the verb's English. Joseph repeats the claim three times (vv. 5, 7, 8), and at 50:20 he says it again: "Elohim reckoned it for good, … to keep alive a numerous people."

  5. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "to save your lives by a great deliverance" (KJV) / "to keep alive for you many survivors" (RSV)

    Rulings 1, 40

וּלְהַחֲיוֹת לָכֶם לִפְלֵיטָה גְּדֹלָה has two readings. (a) "To keep you alive, as a great escape": לָכֶם is the object, as the לְ before an object in late Hebrew, and לִפְלֵיטָה says what the keeping alive amounts to (KJV). (b) "To keep alive for you a great escape": פְּלֵיטָה is the part of a people that gets away (32:9; 2 Sam 15:14; Ezra 9:13–15), so here the survivors, and the לְ marks the object (RSV). The parallel "to put for you a remnant" favours (b), since remnant and escape are the pair of 2 Kgs 19:30–31 and Isa 37:31–32. The LXX takes the noun as an object. "To keep alive for you, for a great escape" keeps the two prepositions as they stand, so English holds both readings (1).

    Rulings 2, 9, 123

כִּי הָאֱלֹהִים: after a negative, כִּי is "but," and the negation and the correction are both kept: "not you … but the Elohim." The article with singular agreement in the next verb (וַיְשִׂימֵנִי) makes it "the Elohim," capitalised (123c). "A father to Pharaoh" is a title of counsel and authority; Eliakim is made "a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem" (Isa 22:21). An Egyptian court title, "father of the god," is often compared. The three titles, father, lord and one ruling, are given in the order of their closeness to the king.

    Ruling 2

עָמַד is "stand," and "do not stand" is "do not stand still, do not stay": the verb of 19:17 ("do not stand anywhere in the plain") and Josh 10:13 (the sun "stood"). The WPRB has "do not delay."

  8. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "lest thou … come to poverty" (KJV) / "lest you … come to poverty" (RSV)

    Rulings 2, 20, 45

The niphal of יָרַשׁ, the verb "possess," is to be made poor, to have one's holdings taken: "do not love sleep, lest you come to poverty (תִּוָּרֵשׁ)" (Prov 20:13); "the drunkard and the glutton come to poverty" (23:21); "lest I be poor and steal" (30:9). The home gloss in the passive, "be possessed," would make a false sense in English, so it yields (guide §9). "Be dispossessed" keeps the English root of the home gloss and the sense of being stripped of what one holds. The niphal is split from the qal by stem (135l).

    Rulings 2, 39

צַוְּארֵי "necks" is plural, the idiom's usual form for one neck (33:4 Esau on Jacob; 46:29 Joseph on Jacob). English has one neck to a man, and the home gloss is printed in the singular. Esau "fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept" (33:4): the reconciliation of the brothers in Gen 33 is repeated here in the next generation.

חוּס with "eye" as subject is to spare, to look on something with regret at its loss: "your eye shall not spare them" (Deut 7:16; 13:9; 19:13); "my eye will not spare" (Ezek 5:11); Jonah's plant, which he spared, and Nineveh, which Adonai spares (Jonah 4:10–11). Pharaoh's meaning is "do not regret the things you leave": let the eye not spare them, let it give them up, for the good of all Egypt is theirs. KJV "regard not your stuff"; RSV "give no thought to your goods."

    Rulings 2, 6, 91

חֲלִפוֹת is "changes": sets of clothes to change into, festal garments (Judg 14:12–13, 19; 2 Kgs 5:5, 22–23), from חָלַף, the root of Laban's "you changed my wage ten times" (31:7, 41). Job uses it of his own "change" (14:14). The brothers once stripped Joseph of his tunic (37:23) and dipped it in blood (37:31); now he clothes them. Benjamin's gift is "three hundred of silver," with the unit left unnamed, as in Abimelech's "a thousand of silver" (20:16). Benjamin receives five times the others' portion, as at the table (43:34).

  12. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "See that ye fall not out by the way" (KJV) / "Do not quarrel on the way" (RSV)

    Rulings 1, 46

רָגַז is to be stirred, shaken, agitated, by fear or by anger. Of fear: "the peoples heard, they were stirred up" (Exod 15:14); "Sheol beneath is stirred up for you" (Isa 14:9). Of anger: "the king was shaken" (2 Sam 19:1); Ps 4:5 רִגְזוּ וְאַל־תֶּחֱטָאוּ, which the LXX renders ὀργίζεσθε καὶ μὴ ἁμαρτάνετε, quoted at Eph 4:26, "be angry and do not sin." The readings of Joseph's charge divide the same way. Onkelos and Rashi read a quarrel: do not fall out on the road over the sale ("you told us to sell him"). The LXX has μὴ ὀργίζεσθε, "do not be angry." Some medieval readers, Rashbam among them, read fear: do not be afraid on the road. "Quarrel" is the home gloss of רִיב and takes one side. "Be stirred up" holds anger and fear, as the Hebrew does.

    Ruling 2

וְכִי הוּא מֹשֵׁל: the כִּי here is emphatic, "and indeed," or it introduces the second item of what they reported ("and that he is ruling"). The brothers' report has two clauses, and the second is the one Jacob cannot take in.

  14. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 37, 74

The qal of חָיָה is "live," and it is printed here: "the spirit of Jacob lived," came to life again. The chapter turns on the root: Joseph asks whether his father is still "living" (חַי, v. 3); Elohim sent him "for keeping alive" (v. 5) and "to keep alive" (v. 7); the brothers report that Joseph is "still living" (v. 26); Jacob's spirit "lived" (v. 27); and Jacob says Joseph is "still living" (v. 28). Samson's spirit "returned, and he lived" (Judg 15:19). Onkelos reads it as prophecy: "the spirit of prophecy rested on Jacob their father"; Rashi adds that the Presence, which had left him in his grief, rested on him again.

  15. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "It is enough" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 2, 45

רַב "vast" stands alone as an exclamation: "Enough!", as in Elijah's "enough, now, Adonai, take my soul" (1 Kgs 19:4) and "you have dwelt long enough (רַב־לָכֶם) at this mountain" (Deut 1:6; 2:3; 3:26). "Vast!" would make no sense in English, so the home gloss yields (guide §9). Onkelos reads the same word as "much": "much is my joy," Joseph is still alive. The verse names him Israel; the narrator used "Jacob" in vv. 25 and 27.

ἀνέχεσθαι πάντων τῶν παρεστηκότων αὐτῷ, "was not able to bear with all those standing by him," where the Masoretic version reads "to hold himself in before all those stationed by him": in the Greek it is their presence he cannot bear. ἀλλ᾽ εἶπεν, "but he said," for "and he called"; Ἐξαποστείλατε πάντας, "Send out all," for "Bring out every man." The Greek adds ἔτι, "still" (seeded, marked), and names Joseph, οὐ παριστήκει οὐδεὶς … τῷ Ἰωσήφ, "no one was standing by Joseph," where the Masoretic version reads "no man stood with him." ἀνεγνωρίζετο, "was making himself recognized," an imperfect, for "made himself known." Swete's παριστήκει and second Ἰωσήφ are spellings and placings of Rahlfs' text, not a different sense.

ἀφῆκεν φωνὴν μετὰ κλαυθμοῦ, "he let go his voice with weeping," for "he gave his voice in weeping." The Greek adds πάντες, "all" (seeded, marked), and has οἱ Αἰγύπτιοι, "the Egyptians," for "Egypt." For "and the house of Pharaoh heard" it has ἀκουστὸν ἐγένετο εἰς τὸν οἶκον Φαραώ, "it came to be audible into the house of Pharaoh."

Swete prints, from Alexandrinus, Ἐγώ εἰμι Ἰωσὴφ ὁ ἀδελφὸς ὑμῶν, ὃν ἀπέδοσθε εἰς Αἴγυπτον, "I am Joseph, your brother, whom you sold to Egypt," where Rahlfs and the Masoretic version read "I am Joseph" alone; the added words are those of 45:4, which in Alexandrinus stands without the call to approach (see 45:4). The alignment cannot pair them, and they are marked as a plus. The Greek ends ἐταράχθησαν γάρ, "for they were troubled," without the Masoretic version's "before his face" (seeded, marked).

Swete's text (Alexandrinus) lacks the Masoretic version's "And Joseph said to his brothers, 'Approach me, please.' And they approached." and begins καὶ εἶπεν, "And he said"; Rahlfs has the call (ἐγγίσατε πρός με, καὶ ἤγγισαν). The printed edition was checked on the scan of Swete: the clause is not in his text. The alignment seeds only "please" (נָא) as a minus; the whole lack is marked at the start of the verse, its clause naming the Hebrew tokens 1–5 and 7–8 around the seeded "please" (WLC 6), a split range (153i). The Greek also lacks "me" after "sold" (אֹתִי; seeded, marked), which the Masoretic version's English does not print either.

τοῦτο γὰρ δεύτερον ἔτος, "For this is the second year," for "For these two years." The Greek has ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, "on the land," without "the inward part of" (בְּקֶרֶב), which the alignment does not seed; the lack is marked. It adds λοιπά, "remaining," to the "still" of the Masoretic version, which the alignment does not seed; it is marked as a plus. οὐκ ἔσται, "there will be no," a future, for "there is no"; οὐδέ, "nor," for "and." ἄμητος, the mowing of the grain, for "harvest."

ἀπέστειλεν γάρ, "For … sent," for "And … sent." ὑπολείπεσθαι ὑμῶν κατάλειμμα, "to reserve a remnant of you," for "to put for you a remnant": ὑπολείπω is the verb of Rom 11:3–5, "I alone am reserved … a remnant (λεῖμμα) has come to be." ἐκθρέψαι ὑμῶν κατάλειψιν μεγάλην, "to nourish a great residue of you," for "to keep alive for you, for a great escape" (פְּלֵיטָה): the Greek has three words of leaving, ὑπολείπω, κατάλειμμα, κατάλειψις, where the Hebrew has "remnant" and "escape."

ἐν γῇ Γέσεμ Ἀραβίας, "in the land of Goshen of Arabia": Γέσεμ is the Greek spelling of Goshen (145f; names table), and Ἀραβίας, "of Arabia," is the Greek's own addition, which the alignment does not seed; it is marked as a plus. The Greek places Goshen in Arabia, the land east of the Nile Delta, as it names the region again at 46:34. Swete ends ὅσα σοὶ ἐκεῖ, "as many things as are yours there," where Rahlfs reads ἐστιν; Swete's ἐκεῖ, "there," is marked as a plus. The alignment seeds a minus of "and all" (וְכָל) after "your cows"; it is refused, as καὶ ὅσα, "and as many things as," renders the Masoretic version's "and all that." αἱ βόες, feminine, "your cows" (152b), for "your herd"; τὰ πρόβατα, "your sheep," for "your flock."

Swete prints, from Alexandrinus, ἐπέπεσεν ἐπ᾽ αὐτῷ, "he fell upon him," where Rahlfs reads ἔκλαυσεν ἐπ᾽ αὐτῷ, "he wept on him," and the Masoretic version "and wept": in this text Joseph falls on Benjamin twice and his weeping is not told, and Benjamin alone weeps. The reading was checked on the scan of Swete, which prints ἐπέπεσεν ἐπ᾽ αὐτῷ. The words ἐπ᾽ αὐτῷ, "upon him," are seeded and marked. ἐπιπεσών, "having fallen upon," a participle, for "he fell on … and."

For "it was well in the eyes of Pharaoh and in the eyes of his servants" the Greek has ἐχάρη δὲ Φαραὼ καὶ ἡ θεραπεία αὐτοῦ, "now Pharaoh rejoiced, and his attendants." θεραπεία is "healing" at home (Luke 9:11; Rev 22:2); of a household's servants the collocation gives "attendants" (153f), as at Luke 12:42, "set over his attendants (θεραπείας)."

Swete's ἀλλασσούσας is the simple verb where Rahlfs has ἐξαλλασσούσας, and καὶ τῷ Βενιαμείν, "and to Benjamin," where Rahlfs has τῷ δὲ Βενιαμιν; the sense is one.
