1 And the Lord ⸢God⸣ said to Noah, "Enter, you and all your house, into the chest, for you I have seen just before me in this generation. 2 Now from‸ the clean cattle bring in to yourself seven seven, male and female1; but from the cattle not clean‸ two ⸢two⸣, male and female; 3 and from the flyers of the sky ⸢that are clean⸣, seven seven, male and female, ⸢and from all the flyers not clean, two two, male and female⸣, to sustain seed on all the land. 4 For in seven days further, I am bringing on rain upon the land forty days and forty nights, and I will wipe out every standing thing that I made from the face of the land." 5 And Noah did all things, as many as the Lord ⸢God⸣ commanded him. 6 Now Noah ⸢was⸣ of six hundred years, and the flood was‸2 on the land.

7 Now Noah entered, and his sons and his woman and the women of his sons with him, into the chest, because of the water of the flood. 8 ⸢And from the flyers⸣3, and from the clean cattle, and from the cattle not clean, and from the flyers, and from all the creepers that are on the land, 9 two two they entered to Noah into the chest, male and female, even as God commanded him. 10 And it came to be, after the seven days, and the water of the flood came to be on the land. 11 In the six hundredth year in the life of Noah, of the second month, on the seventh and twentieth4 of the month, on this day all the springs of the Abyss‸ burst, and the cataracts5 of the sky were opened; 12 and the rain came to be on the land forty days and forty nights.

13 On this day Noah entered, Shem, Ham, Japheth, sons of Noah, and the woman of Noah and the three women of his sons with him, into the chest. 14 ‸And all the beasts after kind, and all the cattle after kind, and every creeper moving on the land after kind, and every flyer after kind‸ 15 entered to Noah into the chest, two two, ⸢male and female⸣6, from all flesh in which is a spirit of life. 16 And those going in, male and female from all flesh, entered, even as God commanded Noah; and the Lord ⸢God⸣ shut ⸢the chest⸣ from outside him7. 17 And the flood came to be ⸢on the land⸣8 forty days ⸢and forty nights⸣ on the land; and the water was multiplied and lifted up the chest, and it was exalted from the land. 18 And the water prevailed and was very much multiplied on the land; and the chest was borne9 above the water.

19 Now the water prevailed very vehemently on the land, and covered over all the high mountains that were under‸ the sky. 20 Fifteen cubits above the water was exalted, and covered over ⸢all⸣ the ⸢high⸣ mountains. 21 And all flesh moving on the land died, of the flyers and of the cattle and of the beasts, and every creeper moving on the land, and every human; 22 and all things, as many as have‸ breath of life, and every one that was on the dry, died. 23 And he wiped out every standing thing that was on the face of ⸢all⸣ the land, from human to cattle, and creepers, and the flyers of the sky; and they were wiped out from the land. And there was left behind alone Noah, and those with him in the chest. 24 And the water was exalted on the land a hundred fifty days.

    Ruling 52

ἄρσεν καὶ θῆλυ, "male and female," the words of v. 3 and of 1:27, where the Masoretic version reads "a man and his woman" (אִישׁ וְאִשְׁתּוֹ) of the clean and the unclean cattle. The Greek also has "bring in to yourself" (εἰσάγαγε) where the Masoretic version reads "you shall take for yourself."

  2. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 53, 54, 141, 143

Swete's text, from Alexandrinus, reads καὶ ὁ κατακλυσμὸς ἦν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, "and the flood was on the land," with no word for the water. The Masoretic version reads "and the flood was, waters on the land," and Rahlfs and Göttingen have ἐγένετο ὕδατος, "came to be, of water." The alignment, made on a text with the water, does not mark the lack, which is marked here (54, 141).

  3. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 53, 54, 141, 143

Swete's text names the flyers twice, at the head of the list and again after the unclean cattle, where the Masoretic version reads "and from the flyers"; Rahlfs and Göttingen have them once, at the head. The second mention stands where the Masoretic version has the flyers and is left unmarked; the first is the Greek's addition and is marked as a plus (54, 141).

  4. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Ruling 52

ἑβδόμῃ καὶ εἰκάδι, "on the seventh and twentieth," where the Masoretic version reads "on the seventeenth day of the month." The Greek dates the ark's resting to the same day of the seventh month (8:4) and has the land dry on the twenty-seventh of the second month a year later (8:14), as the Masoretic version also has it: in the Greek the flood lasts one year to the day, in the Masoretic version a year and ten days. Jubilees 5:23–32 and the Qumran Genesis commentary (4Q252) work out the calendar of the Hebrew dates.

  5. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "the windows of heaven" (KJV) / "the windows of the heavens" (RSV)

    Rulings 5, 57

καταράκται, "cataracts," down-rushing falls, the floodgates of the sky; English "cataract" keeps the sense of a deluge from above (Lear's "You cataracts and hurricanoes, spout"), so the Greek cognate is printed (5, 57). The Masoretic version reads "the lattices of the skies" (אֲרֻבֹּת). The word has no lemma id in the packet and is left untagged; it returns at 8:2.

  6. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 53, 54, 141, 143

ἄρσεν καὶ θῆλυ, "male and female," stands here in Swete's text from Alexandrinus and not in Rahlfs, Göttingen or the Masoretic version, which reads "two two from all the flesh." The alignment does not mark it; it is marked as a plus (54, 141).

  7. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Ruling 52

τὴν κιβωτὸν ἔξωθεν αὐτοῦ, "shut the chest from outside him," where the Masoretic version reads "shut about him" (בַּעֲדוֹ). The Greek names what was shut, marked as a plus with "God," and places the Lord outside.

  8. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 53, 54, 141, 143

Swete's text has ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, "on the land," twice in the clause, before and after the forty days and forty nights; Rahlfs and the Masoretic version have it once. The second stands where the Masoretic version reads "on the land," and the first is marked as a plus (54, 141).

  9. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 2, 52

ἐπεφέρετο ἡ κιβωτὸς ἐπάνω τοῦ ὕδατος, "the chest was borne above the water," the words of 1:2, where "a wind of God was borne above the water." The Masoretic version reads "the box went on the face of the waters," with the verb "go" (הָלַךְ); the Greek has the verb and the preposition of the second verse of the Bible.
