1 And Jacob dwelt in the land of the sojournings of his father, in the land of Canaan.
1 Now Jacob dwelt in the land where his father sojourned, in the land of Canaan.1
1 Jacob lived in the land where his father had lived as a foreigner, the land of Canaan.

2 These are the producings1 of Jacob. Joseph, a son of seventeen years, was shepherding with his brothers2 among the flock, and he was a lad with the sons of Bilhah and with the sons of Zilpah, the women of his father. And Joseph brought their whispering3, bad, to their father.
2 Now these are the geneses of Jacob. Joseph,‸ of seventeen years, was shepherding with his brothers the sheep, being young, with the sons of Bilhah2 and with the sons of Zilpah, the women of his father; now they brought against Joseph an evil censure to Israel their father.3
2 This is the family history of Jacob. When Joseph was seventeen years old, he was tending the flock with his brothers. He was a boy working with the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives. And Joseph carried bad whispers about them to their father.

3 And Israel loved Joseph more than all his sons, for a son of old age he was to him; and he made him a tunic of passim4.
3 Now Jacob loved Joseph more than all his sons, for a son of old age he was to him; now he made him a many-colored tunic.4
3 Israel loved Joseph more than all his sons, because Joseph was the son of his old age. And he made him a special robe.

4 And his brothers saw that it was him their father loved more than all his brothers, and they hated him, and they were not able to speak to him for peace5.
4 Now his brothers, having seen that it was him his father held dear out of all his sons5, hated him, and they were not able to speak to him anything peaceable6.
4 His brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, and they hated him. They could not speak a word of peace to him.

5 And Joseph dreamed a dream and told it to his brothers, and they added still to hate him.
5 Now Joseph, having dreamed a dream, reported it to his brothers.‸
5 Joseph had a dream, and he told it to his brothers. Then they hated him even more.

6 And he said to them, "Hear, please, this dream that I have dreamed:
6 And he said to them, "Hear‸ this dream that I have dreamed:
6 He said to them, "Please listen to this dream I had.

7 look, we were sheaving sheaves6 in the middle of the field, and look, my sheaf rose and also was stationed; and look, your sheaves went around and prostrated themselves to my sheaf."
7 I supposed you were tying up sheaves in the middle of the plain;‸ and my sheaf rose and‸ was straightened; now your sheaves, having turned around,‸ bowed down to my sheaf."7
7 We were tying up bundles of grain in the field. Then my bundle rose and stood upright. And your bundles gathered around and bowed down to my bundle."

8 And his brothers said to him, "Reigning, will you reign over us? Or ruling, will you rule7 over us?" And they added still to hate him, for his dreams and for his words.
8 Now his brothers said to him, "Reigning, you shall not reign over us, shall you? Or, being lord, shall you be lord over us?"8 And they added further to hate him on account of his dreams and on account of his words.
8 His brothers said to him, "Will you really be king over us? Or will you really rule over us?" And they hated him even more because of his dreams and because of what he said.

9 And he dreamed again another dream, and recounted it to his brothers, and he said, "Look, I have dreamed a dream again: and look, the sun and the moon and eleven stars were prostrating themselves to me."
9 Now he saw‸ a different dream, and related it to his father and to his brothers, and he said, "Look, I have dreamed a different dream: just like the sun and the moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me."9
9 Then he had another dream, and he told it to his brothers. He said, "Listen, I had another dream. The sun, the moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me."

10 And he recounted it to his father and to his brothers, and his father rebuked him and said to him, "What is this dream that you have dreamed? Coming, shall we come, I and your mother8 and your brothers, to prostrate ourselves to you, to the land?"
10 ‸And his father rebuked him and said, "What is this dream that you have dreamed? Then, coming, shall we even come, I and your mother and your brothers, to bow down to you to the land?"
10 He told it to his father and to his brothers, and his father scolded him. He said to him, "What is this dream you have had? Will I and your mother and your brothers really come and bow down to the ground before you?"

10 καὶ ἐπετίμησεν αὐτῷ ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπεν Τί τὸ ἐνύπνιον τοῦτο ὃ ἐνυπνιάσθης; ἆρά γε ἐλθόντες ἐλευσόμεθα ἐγώ τε καὶ ἡ μήτηρ σου καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοί σου προσκυνῆσαί σοι ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν;

11 And his brothers were jealous of him, and his father kept the word.
11 Now his brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the word.
11 His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind.

12 And his brothers went to shepherd the flock9 of their father in Shechem.
12 Now his brothers went to graze the sheep of their father to Shechem.
12 His brothers went to tend their father's flock at Shechem.

13 And Israel said to Joseph, "Are not your brothers shepherding in Shechem? Go, and let me send you to them." And he said to him, "Here I am10."
13 And Israel said to Joseph, "Are not your brothers shepherding in Shechem? Come, let me send you to them." Now he said to him, "Here I am."
13 Israel said to Joseph, "Are not your brothers tending the flock at Shechem? Go, and I will send you to them." And Joseph said to him, "Here I am."

14 And he said to him, "Go, please, see the peace of your brothers and the peace of the flock, and return me word." And he sent him from the valley of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.
14 Now Israel said to him, "Having gone,‸ see if your brothers and the sheep are healthy, and announce to me." And he sent him out of the valley of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.10
14 Israel said to him, "Please go and see whether all is well with your brothers and with the flock. Then bring word back to me." And he sent him from the valley of Hebron, and Joseph came to Shechem.

15 And a man found him, and look, he was straying in the field; and the man asked him, saying, "What are you seeking?"
15 And a human found him‸ straying in the plain; now the human asked him, saying, "What are you seeking?"
15 A man found Joseph wandering around in the field. The man asked him, "What are you looking for?"

16 And he said, "My brothers I am seeking. Tell me, please, where they are shepherding."
16 Now he said, "My brothers I am seeking;‸ report to me where they are grazing."
16 Joseph said, "I am looking for my brothers. Please tell me where they are tending the flock."

17 And the man said, "They have broken camp from here, for I heard them saying, 'Let us go to Dothan.'" And Joseph went after his brothers and found them in Dothan.
17 Now the human said to him, "They have set out from here, for I heard them saying, 'Let us go to Dothan.'" And Joseph went behind his brothers and found them in Dothan.11
17 The man said, "They have moved on from here. I heard them say, 'Let's go to Dothan.'" And Joseph went after his brothers and found them at Dothan.

18 And they saw him from afar, and before he drew near to them, they dealt craftily11 with him to make him die12.
18 Now they foresaw him from afar, before he drew near to them; and‸ they were going to kill him.12
18 They saw him from far away. Before he reached them, they made a sly plan against him to kill him.

19 And they said, a man to his brother, "Look, the owner of the dreams13—that one over there—is coming.
19 Now they said, each to his brother, "Look, that dreamer is coming.
19 They said to one another, "Look, that dream master over there is coming.

20 And now, go, and let us kill him and throw him into one of the pits, and we will say, 'A bad living thing has eaten him.' And we shall see what his dreams will be."
20 Now therefore, come, let us kill him and fling him into one of the pits, and we will say, 'An evil beast has devoured him.' And we shall see what his dreams are."13
20 Now come, let's kill him and throw him into one of the pits. We will say that a fierce wild animal ate him. Then we will see what becomes of his dreams."

21 And Reuben heard, and he snatched him from their hand, and he said, "We will not strike him in the soul14."
21 Now Reuben, having heard, took him out of their hands, and he said, "We will not strike him in the soul."
21 When Reuben heard this, he rescued Joseph from their hands. He said, "We will not take his life."

22 And Reuben said to them, "Do not spill blood. Throw him into this pit that is in the wilderness, and a hand do not send against him"—so that he might snatch him from their hand, to return him to his father.
22 Now Reuben said to them, "Do not pour out blood; but cast him into one of the pits that are in the desert, but a hand do not bear upon him"—so that he might take him out of their hands and give him back to his father.14
22 Reuben said to them, "Do not shed blood. Throw him into this pit here in the wilderness, and do not lay a hand on him." Reuben said this so that he could rescue Joseph from them and bring him back to his father.

24 And they took him and threw him into the pit; and the pit was empty: there were no waters in it15.
24 And having taken him, they flung him into the pit; but that pit‸ had no water.15
24 They took him and threw him into the pit. The pit was empty; there was no water in it.

25 And they sat to eat bread, and they lifted their eyes and saw, and look, a caravan of Ishmaelites16 coming from Gilead, and their camels lifting gum and balm and ladanum17, going to bring down to Egypt.
25 Now they sat down to eat bread; and having looked up with their eyes they saw, and look, Ishmaelite wayfarers were coming from Gilead, and their camels were laden with incenses and resin and stacte; now they were going to bring down to Egypt.16

27 Go, and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and our hand—let it not be on him; for he is our brother, our flesh." And his brothers heard.
27 Come, let us sell him to these Ishmaelites; but our hands—let them not be on him; for he is our brother and our flesh." Now his brothers heard.
27 Come, let's sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay a hand on him. For he is our brother, our own flesh." And his brothers listened to him.

28 And men, Midianites, merchants, passed over; and they pulled and brought up Joseph from the pit, and they sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty silver; and they brought Joseph to Egypt19.
28 And the humans, the Midianites, the merchants, were passing along; and they dragged out and hauled up Joseph from the pit; and they sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty of gold; and they brought down Joseph to Egypt.17

29 And Reuben returned to the pit, and look, Joseph was not in the pit; and he ripped his garments.
29 Now Reuben came back to the pit, and he does not see Joseph in the pit; and he tore apart his cloaks.
29 When Reuben came back to the pit, he saw that Joseph was not in the pit. He tore his clothes.

30 And he returned to his brothers and said, "The child is not20! And I—where to am I coming?"
30 And he came back to his brothers and said, "The lad is not! But I—where am I going further?"
30 He went back to his brothers and said, "The boy is gone! And I, where can I go?"

30 καὶ ἀνέστρεψεν πρὸς τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπεν Τὸ παιδάριον οὐκ ἔστιν· ἐγὼ δὲ ποῦ πορεύομαι ἔτι;

31 And they took the tunic of Joseph, and slaughtered a hairy one21 of goats, and dipped the tunic in the blood.
31 Now having taken the tunic of Joseph, they slew a kid of goats, and soiled the tunic with blood.
31 Then they took Joseph's robe. They killed a male goat and dipped the robe in its blood.

32 And they sent the tunic of passim4, and they brought it to their father, and they said, "This we have found. Recognize22, please: is it the tunic of your son, or not?"
32 And they sent the many-colored tunic, and they carried in to their father, and they said, "This we have found. Recognize‸ if it is the tunic of your son or not."
32 They sent the special robe, and they brought it to their father. They said, "We found this. Please look and see if you recognize it. Is it your son's robe or not?"

33 And he recognized22 it and said, "The tunic of my son! A bad living thing has eaten him. Tearing, Joseph is torn23!"
33 And he recognized it and said, "It is the tunic of my son! An evil beast has devoured him; a beast has snatched Joseph!"
33 He recognized it and said, "It is my son's robe! A fierce wild animal has eaten him. Joseph has surely been torn to pieces!"

34 And Jacob ripped his cloaks and put sack24 on his waist, and mourned over his son many25 days.
34 Now Jacob tore apart his cloaks, and laid sack on his loins, and mourned his son some days.18
34 Jacob tore his clothes and put sackcloth around his waist. He mourned for his son for many days.

35 And all his sons and all his daughters rose to comfort him, and he refused to comfort himself26, and he said, "For I will go down to my son mourning, to Sheol." And his father27 wept for him.
35 Now all his sons and‸ the daughters were gathered and came to comfort him; and he did not want to be comforted, saying, "I will go down to my son mourning, into Hades." And his father wept for him.19
35 All his sons and all his daughters came to comfort him, but he would not let himself be comforted. He said, "For I will go down to my son, still mourning, to Sheol." And his father wept for him.

36 And the Medanites28 sold him to Egypt, to Potiphar, a eunuch29 of Pharaoh, officer of the butchers30.
36 Meanwhile, the Medanites sold Joseph in Egypt to Potiphar. He was a eunuch of Pharaoh and the officer over the butchers.

    Rulings 2, 98

אֵלֶּה תֹּלְדוֹת יַעֲקֹב is the last of the headings of Genesis (2:4; 5:1; 6:9; 10:1; 11:10, 27; 25:12, 19; 36:1, 9), and the home gloss "producings" is held through the chain. What follows is not a list of sons but the story of one son and his brothers, which runs to the end of the book. So "producings" names what came of Jacob, as 2:4 names what came of the skies and the land. The WPRB has "family history" (98).

    Ruling 6

רֹעֶה אֶת־אֶחָיו בַּצֹּאן: the particle אֶת is here the preposition "with," and the flock takes בְּ, "among the flock." The same letters can mark a direct object, "shepherding his brothers," and a reader who already knows the dreams of vv. 7 and 9 hears that construction too. The preposition is printed; the next clause has אֶת as "with" again ("a lad with the sons of Bilhah").

  3. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "their evil report" (KJV) / "an ill report of them" (RSV)

    Rulings 3, 25

דִּבָּה is talk passed on quietly, true or false: the spies "brought out a whispering of the land" (Num 13:32; 14:36–37); "I heard the whispering of many, terror all around" (Jer 20:10; Ps 31:14); "one who sends out whispering is a fool" (Prov 10:18). The root is used of what glides softly over the lips (Song 7:10). "Report" is left for שֵׁמַע. "Their whispering" keeps the suffix open, as the Hebrew does: what they said, or what was said about them. The adjective stands after the noun without the article, "their whispering, bad," and is printed in that place.

  4. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "a coat of many colours" (KJV) / "a long robe with sleeves" (RSV)

    Rulings 1, 25, 40

פַּסִּים is found only with כְּתֹנֶת, here (37:3, 23, 32) and in 2 Sam 13:18–19, where Tamar, the king's daughter, wears the same tunic, "for so the king's virgin daughters were clothed," and tears it. Nothing in either passage says what the word means, and the versions guess in different directions. The LXX has χιτῶνα ποικίλον "a varicoloured tunic" and the Vulgate tunicam polymitam "a tunic of many threads," whence the KJV. Aquila has a tunic "to the ankles," and Symmachus one "with sleeves," taking פַּס as the flat of the hand or foot (Aramaic פַּס יְדָא, the palm of the hand that wrote on the wall, Dan 5:5, 24), whence the RSV. Rashi gives "a garment of fine wool," and after the midrash reads the four letters as the four hands that would sell Joseph: Potiphar, the merchants (סֹחֲרִים), the Ishmaelites and the Midianites. Speiser compared an ornamented garment in Akkadian inventories. No sense is recovered, and English cannot hold "colours" and "sleeves" together, so the word is transliterated, as a name for a garment no one has seen. The Latin passim "scattered, here and there" is a homograph with no connection. The tunic is כְּתֹנֶת, the garment of 3:21 and of the priests (Exod 28:4), held as "tunic" through this chapter (2, 37): it is stripped in v. 23, dipped in v. 31 and sent in v. 32. The WPRB "a special robe" decides nothing.

  5. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 10, 2

וְלֹא יָכְלוּ דַּבְּרוֹ לְשָׁלֹם: the infinitive takes the suffix as its object, "to speak him," that is, to speak to him or with him. לְשָׁלֹם is the greeting's word (29:6; 43:27, "Is your father at peace?"), so they could not wish him peace. Father sends son to "see the peace of your brothers" in v. 14 (שְׁלוֹם twice), and the home gloss "peace" is held so the reader hears it.

  6. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 6, 25

מְאַלְּמִים אֲלֻמִּים: the piel participle with its own noun, a cognate pair kept as "seeding seed" is kept at 1:11. The verb occurs only here; its noun is the sheaf of Ps 126:6, "bringing his sheaves." "Bind" is left for אָסַר (124b). In the dream the sheaves do what the brothers will do in Egypt: they "prostrate themselves" (42:6; 43:26, 28; 44:14), the same verb.

  7. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 6, 20

Each question doubles its verb with the infinitive absolute, as "dying you shall die" (2:17), and the pair is printed with the infinitive first. מָלַךְ "reign" is the king's verb and מָשַׁל "rule" the governor's (1:18; 3:16; 4:7; 45:8, 26, "he is ruler in all the land of Egypt"). The brothers ask it as a sneer, and both come true: Joseph rules (45:8), and the tribe of Judah reigns. אִם is a double question, "…? Or …?"; the אִם is not the "if" of an oath.

  8. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Ruling 74

Rachel has died at Bethlehem (35:19), and the dream has her bow. Rashi, after b. Berakhot 55a, takes it either as Bilhah, who raised Joseph, or as the proof that no dream is without some nonsense in it. The father rebukes, and also "keeps the word" (v. 11): the LXX has διετήρησεν τὸ ῥῆμα, the words Luke 2:51 uses of Mary.

  9. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Ruling 79

In the Leningrad Codex the particle אֶת before צֹאן carries dots over its letters, one of the ten dotted places of the Torah (with 16:5; 18:9; 19:33; 33:4). It is translated as written, and the dots change no sense (79). Rashi, after the midrash: they went "to shepherd themselves," to feed themselves and not their father's flock. Shechem is the city of Gen 34, where the brothers had killed the men, so the father's sending is not a light one.

  10. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "Here am I" (KJV) / "Here I am" (RSV)

    Rulings 2, 37, 88

הִנֵּנִי is הִנֵּה with the first-person suffix; the home gloss "look" would print "Look at me," and the construction is declared and printed "Here I am" each time (124i). It is the answer of one who is called and goes: Abraham to Elohim (22:1, 11), Isaac to his father (22:7), Jacob to the messenger (31:11), Moses (Exod 3:4), Samuel (1 Sam 3:4–8), Isaiah (6:8). Here the son answers the father who sends him to his brothers, as Isaac answered Abraham on the way to the mountain, and the chain is held (37).

  11. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "they conspired against him" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 2, 25

The hithpael of נָכַל is to act with craft and cunning toward someone: "with their wiles (נִכְלֵיהֶם) that they wiled you" (Num 25:18), "to deal craftily (לְהִתְנַכֵּל) with his servants" (Ps 105:25); the participle נוֹכֵל is the cheat (Mal 1:14). "Conspire" gives them an agreement the verb does not state; the verb gives them deceit, which is what they will practise on their father with the tunic (vv. 31–33). "Scheme" is זָמַם's.

  12. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "to slay him" (KJV) / "to kill him" (RSV)

    Rulings 2, 20

לַהֲמִיתוֹ is the hiphil of מוּת "die," the causative "make die." "Kill" is the home gloss of הָרַג (vv. 20, 26), and the KJV and RSV use the one English word for both. The hiphil is printed "make … die" so that the stem stays visible, as the hophal is "be made to die" (126g). In Gen 38 the same stem has Adonai as its subject (38:7, 10).

  13. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 39, 18

בַּעַל הַחֲלֹמוֹת: "owner of" a thing is the one marked by it, as "owner of hair," a hairy man (2 Kgs 1:8), and "owner of a tongue," a charmer (Eccl 10:11). The KJV and RSV have "this dreamer"; the Hebrew keeps the noun, and the brothers name him by the thing they hate (vv. 5, 8). הַלָּזֶה points away, "that one over there" (24:65), and they say it before he can hear.

  14. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "Let us not kill him" (KJV) / "Let us not take his life" (RSV)

    Rulings 2, 39

לֹא נַכֶּנּוּ נָפֶשׁ has the noun as the place of the blow: "he struck him in the soul, and he died" (Deut 19:6, 11); "to strike you in the soul" (Jer 40:14–15). It is a mortal blow, but the words are "strike" and "soul," kept apart from הָרַג "kill" (v. 20) and held as the home glosses; "in the" is supplied. The negative is לֹא, a statement, not the אַל of a prohibition (v. 22), so Reuben says what they will not do.

  15. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Ruling 74

"And the pit was empty: there were no waters in it" says one thing twice, and b. Shabbat 22a, followed by Rashi, reads the second clause against the first: no water, but there were snakes and scorpions. A בּוֹר is a cistern cut for rain; dry, it is a prison (40:15, where Joseph calls the dungeon "the pit"; Jer 38:6, Jeremiah in the mire). "Waters" is the plural of the home gloss (6).

  16. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Ruling 18

The Ishmaelites descend from Ishmael, Joseph's great-uncle (25:12–18). אֹרְחָה is a company on the road (אֹרַח "path"): "the caravans of Tema" (Job 6:19), "caravans of Dedanites" (Isa 21:13). The camels are "lifting" the goods, the verb with which the brothers "lifted their eyes" in the same verse; נָשָׂא holds lifting and carrying in one gloss (2).

  17. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "spicery and balm and myrrh" (KJV) / "gum, balm, and myrrh" (RSV)

    Rulings 39, 25

The three goods recur together among the "choice things of the land" in 43:11. לֹט is the resin of the rockrose, Akkadian ladunu, Greek λήδανον, which Herodotus says the Arabians combed from the beards of goats (3.112); the LXX has στακτή. "Myrrh" is left for מֹר (Exod 30:23; Song 1:13). צְרִי is the balm of Gilead (Jer 8:22, "Is there no balm in Gilead?"; 46:11). נְכֹאת is likely gum tragacanth; the LXX has θυμιάματα "incense." The WPRB has "resin" for ladanum.

  18. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Ruling 2

בֶּצַע is what one cuts off for oneself (the verb בָּצַע, to cut off a weaver's thread, Isa 38:12), gain, and often unjust gain: "haters of profit" (Exod 18:21). "What profit in my blood?" (Ps 30:10, מַה־בֶּצַע בְּדָמִי) is the same question on the lips of a man who fears for his own life. Judah asks what blood will earn, and in the next verse answers with silver. "Gain" is רָכַשׁ's.

  19. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph" (KJV) / "Then Midianite traders passed by; and they drew Joseph up" (RSV)

    Rulings 1, 40, 18

The verse names Midianites, the Ishmaelites name the buyers, and v. 36 has Medanites selling him in Egypt, while 39:1 has Potiphar buy him "from the hand of the Ishmaelites." The subject of "they pulled" is not stated. If it is the Midianites, they found Joseph in the pit and sold him to the Ishmaelites without the brothers' knowledge, and Reuben's empty pit (v. 29) follows; so Rashbam, and the text as it stands supports him. If it is the brothers, they pulled him up and sold him to the Ishmaelites as Judah urged (v. 27); so Rashi, who adds a chain of sales, Ishmaelites to Midianites to Medanites; and Joseph says to them "you sold me" (45:4–5). Judg 8:24 calls the Midianites "Ishmaelites," which suggests the one name could cover the other. Modern source criticism divides the verse between two accounts, one with Ishmaelites and Judah, one with Midianites and Reuben. Every name is printed as written and "they" is left without a stated subject, as in the Hebrew; the WPRB keeps the same "they." "Twenty silver": the unit is unstated, and "pieces" is supplied only in the WPRB. The names are in the table below.

  20. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Ruling 2

הַיֶּלֶד אֵינֶנּוּ: "the child is not," the negative of existence with a suffix, used for the dead and the missing alike: Enoch "was not, for Elohim took him" (5:24); "one is not" (42:13); "Joseph is not and Simeon is not" (42:36), where Jacob says it; Rachel weeping for her children, "for he is not" (Jer 31:15). Reuben calls a seventeen-year-old "the child" (יֶלֶד): to a brother's grief he is the boy. אָנָה "where to" asks a direction, and he has nowhere to come.

  21. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "a kid of the goats" (KJV) / "a goat" (RSV)

    Rulings 20, 2, 127

שָׂעִיר is the adjective "hairy" (27:11, 23) and, as a noun, the male goat (Lev 4:23; 16:8–10, the goat for Azazel), named for its coat; the plural is also the goat-demons of the wild (Lev 17:7; Isa 13:21). The noun is printed "hairy one," a split by construction from the adjective (20). "Goat" is עֵז's (here in the plural, "of goats") and "he-goat" עַתּוּד's (129e), so the root's own English is the one left to it, and it carries the chain. Jacob deceived his father with the skins of "kids of the goats" (גְּדָיֵי הָעִזִּים, 27:9, 16), so that he would feel "hairy, like Esau" (27:11, 23). Now his sons deceive him with the blood of "a hairy one of goats." Genesis Rabbah 84 draws the same line: he deceived with goats, and was deceived with a goat.

  22. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 37, 2

הַכֶּר־נָא, the hiphil of נָכַר "recognize," is the verb of the recognitions in the Jacob and Joseph stories (27:23, where Isaac "did not recognize him"; 42:7–8, where Joseph recognizes his brothers and they do not recognize him). "Recognize, please" returns in Tamar's mouth to Judah (38:25), and "he recognized" in v. 33 returns as Judah's "he recognized" (38:26). b. Sotah 10b and Genesis Rabbah 85 join the two: Judah said to his father "Recognize, please," and he heard "Recognize, please." The chain is held (37). The sons do not say "your son's tunic" or "Joseph's"; they say "the tunic of your son," and let the father name him.

  23. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 6, 126

טָרֹף טֹרַף יוֹסֵף: the infinitive absolute of the qal with the pual, the passive, as "dying, he shall be made to die" (126g) has the active infinitive with the hophal. "Tearing, Joseph is torn" keeps both the doubling and the change of stem. טָרַף is the beast's verb (49:27, "Benjamin is a wolf that tears"); 31:39 has its noun, the "torn beast" Jacob did not bring to Laban. He who bore the loss of every torn beast now says his son is one. Jacob repeats the words in 44:28.

  24. Decision↩ Back to the text

    Expected: "sackcloth" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 39, 37

שַׂק is the coarse cloth, of goat hair, that mourners wear (2 Sam 3:31; Jonah 3:5–8), and the sack it makes. In 42:25, 27, 35 the same word is the brothers' grain sacks, into which Joseph has their silver put back. The one gloss "sack" keeps the father's mourning-cloth and the sons' sacks in one English word through the story (37); "-cloth" is the English idiom's addition. The WPRB has "sackcloth."

  25. Decision↩ Back to the text

    Expected: "many days" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 2, 39

רַב is "vast," and "vast days" would make the days themselves large. With a plural of time the adjective counts, so "many" is printed, as at 21:34.

  26. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 127, 80, 18

The piel "comfort" (5:29) is what the sons and daughters come to do; the hithpael is what Jacob refuses, "to comfort himself," to take comfort (127f; Ps 77:3 has the same refusal with the niphal). אֵרֵד אֶל־בְּנִי אָבֵל שְׁאֹלָה: "to my son" joins the father to the son he thinks is dead, and "to Sheol" is where they will meet. Sheol is the place of the dead, used as a name without the article, and takes a capital (80). This is its first occurrence; Jacob names it again for himself in 42:38; 44:29, 31. כִּי opens the speech as "For," the ground of the refusal.

  27. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 8, 74

"His father" is Jacob, weeping for Joseph, or, with Rashi, Isaac, who is still alive (he dies in 35:28–29, which tells his death ahead of its time) and weeps for Jacob's grief. The Hebrew does not say which, and the English keeps "his father" and "him" as they stand.

  28. Decision↩ Back to the text

    Expected: "the Midianites" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 18, 40

The Masoretic text reads וְהַמְּדָנִים, "the Medanites," the people of Medan, Midian's brother, both sons of Abraham by Keturah (25:2). The Samaritan Pentateuch, the LXX (Μαδιηναῖοι), the Vulgate and the Peshitta read "Midianites," as in v. 28, and the KJV and RSV follow them. The Masoretic text is printed. Whether this is a fourth party (Rashi's chain of sales), a spelling of the same people, or a slip, the note at v. 28 sets out.

  29. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "an officer of Pharaoh's" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 1, 25

סָרִיס is the castrated court servant: "let not the eunuch say, 'I am a dry tree'" (Isa 56:3–4); the king's sons will be "eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon" (2 Kgs 20:18); "the chief of his eunuchs" (Dan 1:3). It is also a court title, from Akkadian ša rēši "the one of the head," and some who bear it are married men; Potiphar has a wife (39:7). The stranger attested sense is printed (1). b. Sotah 13b and Genesis Rabbah 86 take it at its word: Potiphar bought Joseph for himself and was made a eunuch. The WPRB keeps "eunuch," which a reader can see is a title or a fact.

  30. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "captain of the guard" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 39, 1

טַבָּח is the cook who slaughters the meat: Samuel's cook, who sets the thigh before Saul (1 Sam 9:23–24). In the plural, under a שַׂר or רַב, it is the king's men who do the killing and keep the prisoners: Nebuzaradan the רַב־טַבָּחִים burns the temple (2 Kgs 25:8). Targum Onkelos has "executioners," Rashi "slaughterers of the king's animals." "Butchers" keeps the knife the noun names and both sides of it, the kitchen and the guard; "slaughter" is שָׁחַט's (v. 31). ἐν τῇ γῇ οὗ παρῴκησεν ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ, "in the land where his father sojourned," where the Masoretic version reads "in the land of the sojournings of his father": the Greek turns the noun into a clause, with Isaac as subject.

  2. Decision↩ Back to the text

    Expected: "Bilhah" (KJV, RSV, NETS)

    Rulings 2, 18, 148, 149

Βάλλα is Swete's spelling of Bilhah (בִּלְהָה), and also the form the lexicon holds for Bera, king of Sodom (14:2). The name prints by its referent (149a), as at 30:3–7 and 35:25: this is Rachel's servant-girl, and the familiar form is printed, unmarked.

    Rulings 53, 54, 143

κατήνεγκαν δὲ Ἰωσὴφ ψόγον πονηρόν, "now they brought against Joseph an evil censure." Swete prints the plural from Alexandrinus, where Rahlfs has the singular κατήνεγκεν, "Joseph brought," as the Masoretic version does ("And Joseph brought their whispering, bad, to their father"). With the plural, the brothers accuse Joseph, and Joseph's name is the object; the person is marked. καταφέρω is "bring against," the sense of Acts 25:7 ("bringing many grave charges against him"). ψόγος, "censure," is a finding of fault, where the Masoretic version has דִּבָּה "whispering." Joseph is "of seventeen years" (δέκα ἑπτὰ ἐτῶν): the Greek has no word for the Masoretic version's "a son of" (בֶּן); the lack is marked. ὢν νέος, "being young," stands for "and he was a lad" (נַעַר). The Greek names Israel (seeded).

  4. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 2, 18, 133, 143, 145

Ἰακὼβ δὲ ἠγάπα τὸν Ἰωσήφ, "Now Jacob loved Joseph," where the Masoretic version reads "And Israel loved Joseph": the Greek keeps the name Jacob that it used at 37:1–2; marked as a different name for the same man (145f). χιτῶνα ποικίλον, "a many-colored tunic," where the Masoretic version reads "a tunic of passim" (כְּתֹנֶת פַּסִּים), an unrecovered word printed as it stands (133d). The Greek takes it as colors, and its word is the one it used for Jacob's flock: the "many-colored" goats and sheep of 30:32–39. The tunic carries the flock's word through 37:23 and 37:32.

    Rulings 52, 143, 148

ἐφίλει, "held dear," where 37:3 had ἠγάπα, "loved": the Greek changes verb, as John 21:15–17 does, and the two are kept apart (148b). The father is "his father" (ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ), seen from Joseph, where the Masoretic version reads "their father"; and he holds Joseph dear "out of all his sons," where the Masoretic version reads "more than all his brothers." Both are marked.

  6. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "could not speak peaceably unto him" (KJV); "could not speak peaceably to him" (RSV)

    Ruling 2

οὐκ ἐδύναντο λαλεῖν αὐτῷ οὐδὲν εἰρηνικόν, "they were not able to speak to him anything peaceable": the Greek doubles the negative, which English cannot, so οὐδέν, "nothing," is printed "anything" after "not" (as μηδείς is, after a negative). The negation is carried once, in "not." The Masoretic version reads "to speak to him for peace" (לְשָׁלֹם).

ᾤμην ὑμᾶς δεσμεύειν δράγματα, "I supposed you were tying up sheaves," where the Masoretic version reads "look, we were sheaving sheaves": the Greek makes the dream a seeming ("I supposed") and has the brothers do the binding, not "we" with Joseph among them (Swete's ὑμᾶς, where Rahlfs has ἡμᾶς, "we"). Both are marked. The Greek has no "look" before the second and third clauses (seeded) and no word for "also" (וְגַם) before "was straightened"; the lack is marked (150l). περιστραφέντα, "having turned around," for "went around," and προσεκύνησαν, "bowed down," for "prostrated themselves."

Μὴ βασιλεύων βασιλεύσεις ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς; "Reigning, you shall not reign over us, shall you?" The Masoretic version asks "Reigning, will you reign over us?" (הֲ); the Greek opens with μή, which asks a question expecting the answer no. English carries the negative only in a question of this shape; the brothers deny before they ask. ἢ κυριεύων κυριεύσεις, "Or, being lord, shall you be lord over us?" for "Or ruling, will you rule over us?"

    Rulings 53, 54, 143

ἴδεν δὲ ἐνύπνιον ἕτερον, "Now he saw a different dream," where the Masoretic version reads "And he dreamed again another dream": the Greek sees a dream and has no word for "again" (seeded). In the speech it has "I have dreamed a different dream" (ἐνύπνιον ἕτερον) for "I have dreamed a dream again" (חֲלוֹם עוֹד), and ὥσπερ, "just like," for "and look": the dream is told as a likeness. Joseph relates it "to his father and to his brothers" (seeded); the Masoretic version tells his father separately at 37:10, "And he recounted it to his father and to his brothers," which the Greek lacks there (seeded).

The Greek names Israel (seeded) and has no "please" (seeded).

Δωθάειμ, here twice, is the Greek's form of Dothan, the dual form of the name that the Masoretic version itself writes דֹּתַיְנָה, "to Dothain," beside דֹּתָן; it keeps the familiar form, unmarked (145f; 2 Kgs 6:13). The man speaks "to him" and has heard "them" (both seeded).

The Greek lacks "with him" (seeded).

The camels "were laden with" (ἔγεμον) the cargo for the Masoretic version's "lifting": θυμιαμάτων, "incenses," for "gum" (נְכֹאת); ῥητίνης, "resin," for "balm" (צֳרִי); στακτῆς, "stacte," the oil of myrrh that drips from the tree (Exod 30:34), for "ladanum" (לֹט). The Greek names gold, and the price is twenty gold pieces; marked. κατήγαγον, "they brought down," for "they brought," the verb the Greek used at 37:25 for the Ishmaelites' trade (καταγαγεῖν); the Midianites are "passing along" (παρεπορεύοντο, imperfect) where the Masoretic version reads "passed over." ἐξείλκυσαν καὶ ἀνεβίβασαν, "they dragged out and hauled up," for "they pulled and brought up."

The sons and daughters "were gathered and came" (συνήχθησαν … καὶ ἦλθον, the second verb seeded) where the Masoretic version reads "rose"; the Greek has no "all" before "the daughters" (וְכָל), and the lack is marked. οὐκ ἤθελεν παρακαλεῖσθαι, "he did not want to be comforted," passive, for "he refused to comfort himself" (hithpael, 127); λέγων, "saying," for "and he said"; the ὅτι after it introduces the speech and is not printed, where the Masoretic version reads "For" (כִּי).

οἱ δὲ Μαδιηναῖοι, "Now the Midianites," where the Masoretic version reads "the Medanites" (מְדָנִים) and at 37:28 "Midianites": the Greek has one people in both verses; a different name, marked. Πετρεφῆς, Swete's form (Rahlfs Πετεφρης), is the Greek's form of the Egyptian name the Masoretic version writes פּוֹטִיפַר, Potiphar, and it keeps the familiar form (145f). The same Greek name stands for Potiphera, Joseph's father-in-law (41:45). σπάδων, "castrate," for "a eunuch" (סָרִיס); "eunuch" is left for εὐνοῦχος (Acts 8:27). ἀρχιμάγειρος, "chief cook," for "officer of the butchers" (שַׂר הַטַּבָּחִים): the Greek reads טַבָּח in its kitchen sense (1 Sam 9:23–24), the officer over Pharaoh's cooks; the Masoretic title is the one English Bibles give as "captain of the guard."
