1 And Elohim said to Jacob, "Rise, go up to Bethel and dwell there, and make there an altar to the El who was seen by you1 when you bolted from the face of Esau your brother."
1 Now God said to Jacob, "Having risen, go up to the place Bethel, and dwell there, and make there an altar to the God who was seen by you when you ran away from the face of Esau your brother."
1 God said to Jacob, "Get up and go up to Bethel, and live there. Build an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you ran away from your brother Esau."

2 And Jacob said to his house and to all who were with him, "Remove the elohim of foreignness2 that are in your middle, and purify yourselves, and change your cloaks;
2 Now Jacob said to his house and to all who were with him, "Lift the foreign gods out of your middle, and cleanse yourselves, and change your robes;
2 Jacob said to his household and to everyone who was with him, "Get rid of the foreign gods that are among you. Purify yourselves and change your clothes.

3 and let us rise and go up to Bethel, and let me make there an altar to the El who answered me in the day of my strait3 and was with me in the way that I went."
3 and having risen, let us go up to Bethel, and let us make there an altar to the God who listened to me in a day of affliction, who was with me and brought me safely through in the way that I was going."1
3 Let us get up and go up to Bethel. There I will build an altar to God, who answered me when I was in distress and was with me on the road I traveled."

4 And they gave to Jacob all the elohim of foreignness2 that were in their hand, and the hoops that were in their ears; and Jacob cached4 them under the terebinth5 that is by Shechem.
4 And they gave to Jacob‸ the foreign gods that were in their hands, and the earrings that were in their ears; and Jacob hid them away under the terebinth that is in Shechem, and destroyed them until the day of today.2
4 They gave Jacob all the foreign gods they had with them, and the rings in their ears. Jacob hid them under the terebinth near Shechem.

5 And they broke camp, and there was a dismay of Elohim6 on the cities that were around them, and they did not pursue after the sons of Jacob.
5 And Israel lifted away from Shechem; and a fear of God came to be on the cities round about them, and they did not hunt down after the sons of Israel.3
5 Then they set out. The terror of God came on the cities around them, and they did not chase the sons of Jacob.

6 And Jacob came to Luz, which is in the land of Canaan—that is Bethel—he and all the people who were with him.

7 And he built there an altar, and called to the place El Bethel7, for there the elohim were uncovered8 to him when he bolted from the face of his brother.
7 And he built there an altar, and called the name of the place‸ Bethel; for there God shone forth to him when he ran away from the face of Esau his brother.5
7 He built an altar there and named the place El-bethel, because it was there that the elohim had revealed themselves to him when he was running away from his brother.

8 And Deborah, the one who suckled Rebekah, died, and she was buried under Bethel, under the oak; and he called its name Allon-bacuth9.
8 Deborah, Rebekah's nurse, died, and she was buried below Bethel, under the oak. And he named it Allon-bacuth, the Oak of Weeping.

9 And Elohim was seen by Jacob again10 when he came from Paddan-aram, and he blessed him.
9 Now God was seen by Jacob further in Luz, when he came7 from Mesopotamia of Syria8, and God blessed him.

10 And Elohim said to him, "Your name is Jacob; your name shall not be called Jacob again, but Israel shall be your name." And he called his name Israel11.
10 And God said to him, "‸Your name shall not further be called Jacob, but Israel shall be your name."‸9
10 God said to him, "Your name is Jacob. You will no longer be called Jacob; your name will be Israel." And God named him Israel.

11 And Elohim said to him, "I am El Shaddai12. Bear fruit and be many; a nation and an assembly of nations shall be from you, and kings shall go out from your loins.
11 Now God said to him, "I am your God10; grow and multiply; and nations and gatherings of nations shall be from you, and kings shall go out from your loins.
11 God also said to him, "I am El Shaddai. Be fruitful and increase. A nation, and an assembly of nations, will come from you, and kings will come from your own body.

12 And the land that I gave to Abraham and to Isaac, to you I will give it; and to your seed after you I will give the land."
12 And the land that I have given to Abraham and to Isaac, to you I have given it; and to your seed after you I will give this land."11
12 The land that I gave to Abraham and Isaac I will give to you, and I will give the land to your descendants after you."

16 And they broke camp from Bethel, and there was still a tract16 of the land to come to Ephrath; and Rachel bore17, and she had it hard18 in her bearing.
16 Then they set out from Bethel. While they were still some distance from Ephrath, Rachel gave birth, and she had a hard labor.

17 And it was, when she had it hard18 in her bearing, that the midwife19 said to her, "Do not fear, for this too is a son for you20."
17 Now it came to be, when she was bearing hard, that the midwife said to her, "Take courage, for this too is a son."14
17 While her labor was hard, the midwife said to her, "Don't be afraid. This one is a son for you too."

Notes

  1. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 9, 2

לָאֵל הַנִּרְאֶה אֵלֶיךָ "to the El who was seen by you": the article points back to the El of the stairway dream at this place (28:10–22), who said at Harran, "I am the El of Bethel, where you anointed a standing stone, where you vowed to me a vow" (31:13). The vow of 28:20–22 ("this stone… shall be a house of Elohim") is now called in. The niphal of רָאָה is "be seen," as at v. 9. "Bolted" (בָּרַח) is the verb of Jacob's flight at 27:43, and it returns in v. 7.

  2. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "the strange gods" (KJV) / "the foreign gods" (RSV)

    Rulings 9, 38, 129

אֱלֹהֵי הַנֵּכָר is plural in reference, gods that are "in your middle" and "in their hand" (v. 4), so the lowercase "elohim" stands (9, 38). נֵכָר is the abstract noun "foreignness" (129a), as in בֶּן־נֵכָר "son of foreignness" (17:12, 27); the construct makes them "elohim of foreignness." The same order, in the same words, is given by Joshua at Shechem (Josh 24:14, 23) and by Samuel at Mizpah (1 Sam 7:3); Judg 10:16 tells it done. What they were the text does not say: Rachel's teraphim (31:19, 34), or, with Rashi, the spoil of Shechem (34:27–29). Purifying oneself and changing cloaks is the preparation for meeting Elohim at Sinai (Exod 19:10, 14), where the people wash their cloaks. The hithpael of טָהֵר is "purify oneself"; "clean" is kept for נָקִי.

  3. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "in the day of my distress" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 39, 2

צָרָה is from צרר, "be narrow, be tight": the strait place, from which Jonah cries (Jonah 2:3, מִצָּרָה לִי) and in which Joseph pleads (42:21, "the strait of his soul"). The concrete word is kept (39). When Esau came with four hundred men, "Jacob feared exceedingly, and it was strait for him" (32:8, וַיֵּצֶר, the verb of this root). "Was with me in the way that I went" gives back the vow of 28:20 as fulfilled: "if Elohim will be with me and keep me in this way that I am going."

    Expected: "hid" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 99, 44, 2

טָמַן is to put a thing away out of sight, most often in the ground: Moses hid the Egyptian in the sand (Exod 2:12); Achan's silver lay in the ground inside his tent (Josh 7:21–22); Jeremiah's loincloth went into a cleft of the rock (Jer 13:4–7); a snare is laid hidden for the feet (Ps 140:6; Job 18:10). The hiding field is fixed as a set (99): סָתַר "hide," חָבָא "take cover," כָּחַד "conceal," and טָמַן is fixed here as "cache," the putting away of something where it will not be found. The hoops of the ears return twice: Aaron makes the calf from them (Exod 32:2–4), and Gideon his ephod (Judg 8:24–27).

אֵלָה is "terebinth," one family with אֵלוֹן (112). At Shechem Abram built his first altar by "the terebinth of Moreh" (12:6). Joshua later set a great stone "under the terebinth (הָאַלָּה) that was by the sanctuary of Adonai" at Shechem (Josh 24:26), and Abimelech was made king "by the terebinth of the standing stone that is in Shechem" (Judg 9:6).

Expected: "the terror of God" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 2, 95, 128, 129, 132

חִתָּה occurs only here. It is from חָתַת, "be shattered, be dismayed" (Jer 51:56, "their bows are shattered"; Deut 1:21, "do not fear and do not be dismayed"), the root of חַת "dismay" in 9:2, "your fear and your dismay shall be on every living thing of the land." The noun takes "dismay," as one root with חַת (95). "Terror" is פַּחַד's (31:42, 53). Jacob feared that the cities would gather against him after Shechem (34:30); the dismay falls on them instead. The genitive may name a dismay sent by Elohim or a superlative, a very great dismay (compare 1 Sam 14:15, "a trembling of elohim"); English "of" holds both. אֱלֹהִים has no agreeing verb in its clause, and is capitalised by the scene (128d, 129n, 132b), which opens at v. 1 with Elohim speaking to Jacob in the singular.

אֵל בֵּית־אֵל is "El Bethel," El of the House of El. The place now takes the name of the El who was seen there, as he had named himself at 31:13, "I am the El of Bethel." The LXX gives the town's name alone (Βαιθηλ), and the Vulgate Domus Dei, "House of God." "Called to the place" keeps קָרָא לְ. The WPRB prints the place-name "El-bethel."

Expected: "God appeared unto him" (KJV) / "God had revealed himself to him" (RSV)

    Rulings 123, 92, 38, 2

The verb נִגְלוּ is plural. A plural verb outranks reference (123c, which names this verse), so הָאֱלֹהִים prints "the elohim," lowercase, in the WPB and the WPRB (92). The Samaritan Pentateuch has the singular (נגלה), and Onkelos renders a singular. Ibn Ezra takes the plural of the messengers of Elohim who went up and down the stairway at this place (28:12). The same plural stands with הָאֱלֹהִים at 20:13 ("when the elohim made me wander") and with Elohim at 2 Sam 7:23; b. Sanhedrin 38b answers those who argued from such plurals. The niphal of גָּלָה keeps the home gloss "uncover": "Adonai was uncovered to Samuel in Shiloh" (1 Sam 3:21); "the arm of Adonai, on whom has it been uncovered?" (Isa 53:1).

אַלּוֹן בָּכוּת is "Oak of Weeping" (בָּכָה "weep"); English cannot carry the name and the meaning together, so the meaning is here and in the names table (17). Ruling 112 keeps אַלּוֹן "oak" apart from the terebinth of v. 4. Rebekah's nurse went with her from Harran (24:59), unnamed until her death; how she came to be with Jacob is not told. Genesis Rabbah 81:5 hears in אַלּוֹן the Greek allon, "another": a second weeping, for Rebekah, whose own death the narrative never tells; Rashi follows. מֵינֶקֶת "the one who suckled" is the hiphil participle of יָנַק (24:59; 2 Kgs 11:2), kept as a verb (10). Another Deborah, the prophet, sat under a palm "between Ramah and Bethel" (Judg 4:5). Names in this chapter are in the names table below.

עוֹד "again": Elohim was seen by Jacob at this place before (28:13–15). The blessing that follows (vv. 10–12) gathers the earlier ones: the new name of 32:29, and the El Shaddai blessing that Isaac gave at 28:3–4.

The name Israel was given at the Jabbok with its explanation, "for you have striven with Elohim and with men" (32:29). Here Elohim gives it again, at Bethel, without the explanation. Abraham's old name is not used after 17:5; Jacob keeps both, and the narrative goes on using both (vv. 21–22; 37:1–3; 46:2, "Elohim said to Israel… 'Jacob, Jacob'"). b. Berakhot 13a: "Israel shall be your name" means not that "Jacob" is uprooted, but that Israel is the main name. כִּי אִם after a negation is "but."

El Shaddai speaks in his own name for the second time (17:1), the name by which Isaac blessed Jacob (28:3). "Bear fruit and be many" is the blessing on the creatures, on the human and on Noah (1:22, 28; 9:1, 7), now spoken to one man in the singular. "A nation and an assembly of nations" takes up 28:3, "you shall become an assembly of peoples," and "kings shall go out from your loins" takes up the promise to Abraham and Sarah (17:6, 16). Edom's kings come first (36:31). חֲלָצַיִם, "loins," is the seat of strength and of begetting: "your son who comes out from your loins" (1 Kgs 8:19); "gird your loins like a man" (Job 38:3).

"In the place where he spoke with him" is said in three verses running (vv. 13, 14, 15), and then the place is named. Some modern critics take v. 13b as a copy of v. 14; the Masoretic text is printed as it stands, and the repetition kept (6). מֵעָלָיו "from over him": at 28:13 Adonai stood over him (נִצָּב עָלָיו).

מַצֶּבֶת is a second spelling of מַצֵּבָה "standing stone." This verse has both, and so does v. 20; both are printed "standing stone," one word in two spellings (88, 95). "A standing stone of stone" keeps the Hebrew's redundancy. It is the second standing stone at Bethel (28:18, 22; 31:13). The law later forbids setting one up (Deut 16:22).

Expected: "he poured a drink offering thereon" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 2, 33, 128

וַיַּסֵּךְ עָלֶיהָ נֶסֶךְ is a verb with a noun of its own root as object. נָסַךְ is the verb of the libation: wine poured with the sacrifices (Exod 29:40; Num 15:5–10; 28:7), and libations to other gods (Jer 7:18; 44:17–19; Ps 16:4). It is also the verb of casting metal (Isa 40:19; 44:10) and, in Ps 2:6, of installing a king, "I have installed my king on Zion"; the niphal at Prov 8:23 is taken up there. Ruling 128(g) gives נָסַךְ its own word, since "pour" is יָצַק's, the verb of the oil in this same verse and at 28:18. "Libate" and "libation" keep the one root in English. This is the only libation in Genesis. The WPRB has "poured out a drink offering."

Expected: "a little way" (KJV) / "some distance" (RSV)

    Rulings 25, 2

כִּבְרַת הָאָרֶץ occurs only here, at 48:7 (Jacob telling of this same journey) and at 2 Kgs 5:19 (Naaman "went from him a כִּבְרַת of land"). It is a measure of distance whose length is lost. The LXX takes it as a place-name here, "when he drew near to Chabratha" (Χαβραθα), and at 48:7 adds "by the hippodrome of Chabratha." Rashi, after the midrash, hears כְּבָרָה "sieve": the season when the ground is riddled like a sieve. "Tract" names a stretch of land without guessing its length.

    Expected: "Rachel travailed" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 2, 37

וַתֵּלֶד is the qal of יָלַד, "bore," the home gloss held through the chain of vv. 16–17 and 26 (37). The wayyiqtol tells the birth whole before the verse goes back into the labor; the KJV and RSV "travailed" read it as the onset. Rachel had named her first son with a prayer for a second (30:24).

Expected: "she had hard labour" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 2, 20

וַתְּקַשׁ (piel) and בְהַקְשֹׁתָהּ (hiphil, v. 17) are from קָשָׁה "be hard," whose hiphil with an object is "make hard": Pharaoh's heart (Exod 7:3), the neck (Deut 10:16). Here neither stem has an object: she "had it hard" in her bearing. The intransitive use is a construction of its own, printed "have it hard" (20). Rachel's own words were "Give me sons, or else I am dead" (30:1); she dies bearing the second.

    Rulings 2, 20

הַמְיַלֶּדֶת is the piel participle of יָלַד, the woman who helps another to bear (38:28; Exod 1:15–21). The split of יָלַד (20) names the qal, hiphil, niphal and pual; the piel participle is printed "midwife," a departure from "bear" for a stem the split does not yet name.

"This too is a son for you" answers the prayer in Joseph's name, "may Adonai add to me another son" (30:24). The same comfort, "do not fear, for you have borne a son," is spoken to the dying wife of Phinehas, who names her son Ichabod (1 Sam 4:20–21); the scene is told twice in the Bible, and both mothers name the son for their grief.

בֶּן־אוֹנִי can be "son of my sorrow" (אָוֶן; "bread of mourners," לֶחֶם אוֹנִים, Hos 9:4) or "son of my vigor" (אוֹן; Reuben is "the first of my vigor," רֵאשִׁית אוֹנִי, 49:3). The LXX reads the first, "son of my pain" (Υἱὸς ὀδύνης μου), and Rashi follows. The father changes it to בִּנְיָמִין, "son of the right hand" (יָמִין, "right," 118), the hand of strength and favor (48:13–14), or "son of the south," since the right hand is the south to one who faces east; he is the only son born in the land. Texts from Mari name a tribe Binu-yamina, "sons of the right." v. 24 spells the name without the second yod (בִנְיָמִן). English carries neither pun with the names, so both are here (17). "Her soul was going out": the נֶפֶשׁ leaves at death and returns to the child Elijah raises (1 Kgs 17:21–22). "Called to him" keeps קָרָא לְ.

אֶפְרָתָה, "toward Ephrath." Ephrath is explained as Bethlehem here and at 48:7, and Ruth 4:11 and Mic 5:1 join the two names ("Bethlehem Ephrathah"). Bethlehem is "house of bread" (לֶחֶם). Another tradition puts Rachel's tomb north of Jerusalem, "in the border of Benjamin, at Zelzah" (1 Sam 10:2), near Ramah, where "Rachel is weeping for her children" (Jer 31:15); Matt 2:18 sets the weeping at Bethlehem.

קְבוּרָה is the noun of קָבַר "bury": the burial and its place (47:30). "Grave" is kept for קֶבֶר (23:4–20); the noun and the verb are one root (95). "Until this day": the stone is still a landmark in Saul's time (1 Sam 10:2).

מִגְדַּל־עֵדֶר is "tower of the drove," a watchtower over the flocks. Mic 4:8 addresses Jerusalem in the same words: "and you, tower of the drove, hill of daughter Zion, to you it shall come." Targum Pseudo-Jonathan makes it the place from which the King Messiah will be revealed at the end of days. מֵהָלְאָה לְ is "farther off than," that is, beyond it. From here the narrator calls Jacob "Israel" three times in two verses.

The Masoretic text has a section break in the middle of this verse (pisqa be'emtsa pasuq), after "and Israel heard": the story stops there, and the count of the sons begins. The section mark of this edition stands at the verse's end, where the source data places it (36). The LXX fills the gap: "and it appeared evil before him" (καὶ πονηρὸν ἐφάνη ἐναντίον αὐτοῦ). The Hebrew is printed without it. Jacob's answer waits for his deathbed (49:3–4, "for you went up to your father's bed"), and Reuben's birthright passes to Joseph's sons (1 Chr 5:1). b. Shabbat 55b: "Whoever says Reuben sinned is mistaken": he moved his father's bed out of Bilhah's tent after Rachel's death, and the verse counts it as if he had lain with her. To take a father's concubine is to claim his place (2 Sam 16:21–22; 1 Kgs 2:22). The count of twelve comes after the act, and Reuben is still first in it (v. 23).

Isaac's death is told in the words of Abraham's (25:8): Abraham "old and sated," Isaac "old and sated with days." It is told early. Isaac was sixty at the twins' birth (25:26), so Jacob is a hundred and twenty here. Jacob is a hundred and thirty before Pharaoh (47:9), when Joseph is thirty-nine (41:46, 53; 45:6), so Joseph was sold at seventeen (37:2) when Isaac was a hundred and sixty-eight: Isaac lived through the selling of Joseph by twelve years (Rashi; Seder Olam). Esau and Jacob bury him together, as Isaac and Ishmael buried Abraham (25:9).

The Greek adds καὶ διέσωσέν με, "and brought me safely through" (seeded), the verb of 1 Pet 3:20, so that the God who was with Jacob on the way is also the one who carried him through it. For "answered me" (הָעֹנֶה) it has τῷ ἐπακούσαντί μοι, "who listened to me," and for "the day of my strait" ἡμέρᾳ θλίψεως, "a day of affliction." Swete prints the imperfect ἐπορευόμην, "I was going," from Alexandrinus, where Rahlfs has the aorist; Jacob says "let us make," where the Masoretic version reads "let me make."

The Greek has τὰ ἐνώτια, "the earrings," the ornaments of the ear, for the Masoretic version's "the hoops" (נֶזֶם, 125g), and ends the verse with a plus (seeded): καὶ ἀπώλεσεν αὐτὰ ἕως τῆς σήμερον ἡμέρας, "and destroyed them until the day of today," so that the foreign gods are not only buried but done away with. Swete prints τερέβινθον, "terebinth," from Alexandrinus, where Rahlfs spells it τερέμινθον; it is τερέβινθος, "terebinth". Here and at 35:5 the city is Σίκιμα, "Shechem," a form apart from Συχέμ, the man and the city of Gen 33–34; the two print one English name (names table). The Greek lacks "all" before the gods (seeded).

καὶ ἐξῆρεν Ἰσραὴλ ἐκ Σικίμων, "And Israel lifted away from Shechem," where the Masoretic version reads "And they broke camp": the Greek names the subject, by his new name, and the place left (seeded). ἐξαίρω keeps its home gloss "lift away" (1 Cor 5:13) in its intransitive use of a camp that is struck (12:9 has ἀπαίρω). At the end of the verse the Greek has "the sons of Israel," where the Masoretic version reads "the sons of Jacob": the same man under his other name, before God gives it at 35:10, as the Greek also writes it at 34:7 ("in Israel"); marked (145f). φόβος θεοῦ, "a fear of God," stands for the Masoretic version's "a dismay of Elohim" (חִתַּת).

Λοῦζα, "Luz," a spelling of the Masoretic version's לוּזָה, keeps the familiar form, unmarked, here and at 35:9. At 28:19 the Greek had no Luz: it read וְאוּלָם, "however," with the name and printed Οὐλαμμαύς, "Oulammaus," as the former name of the city where the Masoretic version reads "however, Luz was the name of the city at the first" (marked there as a different name). Here the Greek names the city Luz.

ἐπεφάνη αὐτῷ ὁ θεός, "God shone forth to him," a singular verb, where the Masoretic version reads "the elohim were uncovered to him," with the plural verb that keeps elohim lowercase (123c); the singular makes the one God the subject, and the capital is printed. ἐπιφαίνω is the verb of Titus 2:11, "the grace of God has shone forth." The Greek has "called the name of the place Bethel" (τὸ ὄνομα seeded) where the Masoretic version reads "called to the place El Bethel": it lacks "El" (seeded), so that the name of the altar is the name of the place. It adds "Esau" (seeded).

Δεββωρὰ ἡ τροφὸς Ῥεβέκκας, "Deborah, the nurse of Rebekah," where the Masoretic version reads "the one who suckled Rebekah" (מֵינֶקֶת): τροφός is the nurse who rears, the word of 1 Thess 2:7. The Greek lacks "and she was buried" (seeded) and has "below Bethel" (κατώτερον) for "under Bethel." The tree is βάλανος, the acorn-bearing tree, where the Masoretic version has אַלּוֹן "oak" (112); the Greek's word is kept apart from δρῦς "oak" and τερέβινθος "terebinth" (35:4), and is printed "acorn-tree." The name Βάλανος πένθους, "Acorn-tree of Mourning," translates the Masoretic version's Allon-bacuth (אַלּוֹן בָּכוּת, "oak of weeping"), a different name printed as the Greek says it and marked (145f). The Greek names Jacob as the one who called it (seeded).

    Expected: "came" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 2, 57

παραγίνομαι keeps its home gloss "come up" (arrive, present oneself), but the Greek has no "up" here and Jacob comes down from Mesopotamia; "come up" would add a direction the text lacks (57), and "came" is printed.

Μεσοποταμία τῆς Συρίας, "Mesopotamia of Syria," where the Masoretic version reads "Paddan-aram": the Greek's name for the region, printed as it sounds and marked (145f), as at 28:2 and 31:18; again at 35:26. At 35:9 the Greek adds "in Luz" and "God" as the subject of "blessed" (both seeded).

    Rulings 18, 54, 143

The renaming is worded as at 17:5, "your name shall not further be called Abram," and as the Greek words it at 32:28. The Greek lacks the Masoretic version's opening "Your name is Jacob" (the seeded lack is marked at the head of the speech) and its closing "And he called his name Israel" (seeded): in the Greek God gives the name, and the narrator does not repeat it.

    Rulings 9, 52, 143

Ἐγὼ ὁ θεός σου, "I am your God," where the Masoretic version reads "I am El Shaddai": the Greek has no rendering of the name here, as at 17:1 and 28:3, and a different divine title stands in its place, marked. For "a nation and an assembly of nations" it has plurals, ἔθνη καὶ συναγωγαὶ ἐθνῶν, "nations and gatherings of nations"; συναγωγή takes "gathering," its sense for things and peoples gathered, not "synagogue" (57). The Greek has αὐξάνου καὶ πληθύνου, "grow and multiply," for "bear fruit and be many."

δέδωκα, "I have given," a perfect, twice: the land is already given to Jacob, where the Masoretic version reads "to you I will give it." τὴν γῆν ταύτην, "this land," is seeded. The alignment seeds a two-word plus at the Masoretic 35:12 that it cannot place: its Greek (Rahlfs) adds σοὶ ἔσται, "it shall be yours," which Swete's text from Alexandrinus does not print, so nothing is marked.

Swete's text has here, in Jacob's journey from Bethel, the clause that the Masoretic version gives at 35:21, after Rachel's death: "And Israel broke camp and stretched out his tent beyond Migdal-eder." The Greek reads ἔπηξεν τὴν σκηνὴν αὐτοῦ ἐπέκεινα τοῦ πύργου Γάδερ, "he pitched his tent beyond the tower of Eder," before the birth of Benjamin, so that the tower stands between Bethel and Ephrath. The clause is marked as a plus where it stands, and the Masoretic 35:21, which has no Greek verse, is shown as a gap after 35:20 (149k). Γάδερ is the Greek spelling of עֵדֶר, the ʿayin written with gamma as in Γάζα and Γόμορρα, and keeps the familiar form "Eder" (145f; names table); πύργος translates מִגְדַּל, "tower." The Greek also names Jacob (seeded) and has the singular participle Ἀπάρας, "having set out," where the Masoretic version reads "they broke camp."

χαβραθά, printed "Chabratha," transliterates the Masoretic version's כִּבְרַת, "a tract (of the land)," a measure of distance whose length is not known; the Greek takes it as a place Jacob drew near, as again at 48:7 (κατὰ τὸν ἱππόδρομον χαβραθά). Printed as it sounds and marked as a name (145f), with the method of 133(d). For "there was still a tract" the Greek has ἡνίκα ἤγγισεν, "at the time when he drew near," and no word for "still" (עוֹד); the lack is marked. Ἐφράθα is a spelling of the Masoretic version's אֶפְרָתָה and keeps the familiar form "Ephrath."

Θάρσει, "Take courage," where the Masoretic version reads "Do not fear" (אַל־תִּירְאִי): the Greek gives the comfort as a command, not a prohibition, the word of Matt 9:2, 22 and John 16:33. It has no word for "for you" (לָךְ). For "when she had it hard in her bearing" it has ἐν τῷ σκληρῶς αὐτὴν τίκτειν, "when she was bearing hard."

Υἱὸς ὀδύνης μου, "Son of my anguish," where the Masoretic version has the name Ben-oni (בֶּן־אוֹנִי): the Greek translates the name, reading אוֹן as grief, not strength (Gen 49:3 has the same word as "strength"), and so gives the dying mother's meaning without the sound. A different name, printed as the Greek says it and marked (145f). The Greek has ἐν τῷ ἀφιέναι αὐτὴν τὴν ψυχήν, "as she was letting go her soul," where the Masoretic version reads "as her soul was going out," and the imperfect ἀπέθνησκεν, "she was dying," for "she died." Swete prints Βενιαμείν, a spelling of the name (Rahlfs Βενιαμιν).

The Masoretic 35:21 ("And Israel broke camp and stretched out his tent beyond Migdal-eder") has no verse in the Greek: its clause about the tent stands in Swete's 35:16, before Rachel's death, and is marked there as a plus. The verse is left unmapped so that the gap shows (149k), and the lack is marked here; the Greek has no words for "And Israel broke camp" anywhere.

    Rulings 2, 18, 148, 149

Βάλλα is Swete's spelling of Bilhah (בִּלְהָה), and also the form the lexicon holds for Bera, king of Sodom (14:2). The name prints by its referent (149a), as at 30:3–7: this is Rachel's servant-girl, and the familiar form is printed, unmarked. Again at 35:25.

Swete's 35:21 is the first half of the Masoretic version's 35:22, and Swete's 35:22 is its second half ("And the sons of Jacob were twelve"); from 35:23 the two numberings agree again. The Greek adds καὶ πονηρὸν ἐφάνη ἐναντίον αὐτοῦ, "and it appeared evil before him" (seeded): the Masoretic version tells only that Israel heard, and the Greek gives his judgment, which Jacob speaks at 49:4. κατοικέω, "dwell," stands for the Masoretic version's "tented" (שָׁכַן).

εἰς πόλιν τοῦ πεδίου, "to a city of the plain," where the Masoretic version reads "Kiriath-arba" (קִרְיַת הָאַרְבַּע, "city of the four"): the Greek translates the first word of the name and reads the second as הָעֲרָבָה, "the plain," a different name printed as the Greek says it and marked (145f). It adds "in the land of Canaan" after Hebron (seeded), as at 23:2, 19.
