1 And Jacob lifted his feet1 and went to the land of the sons of the east.
1 And Jacob, having lifted away his feet, went into the land‸ of the east1, to Laban the son of Bethuel the Syrian, now the brother of Rebekah, mother of Jacob and Esau.
1 Jacob set out and went to the land of the people of the east.

2 And he saw, and look, a well in the field; and look, there three droves2 of flock crouching by it, for from that well they would give drink to the droves; and the stone was great3 on the mouth of the well.
2 And he sees, and look, a well in the plain. Now there were three flocks of sheep reposing together2; for from that well they would give drink to the flocks; now the stone was great on the mouth of the well.
2 He looked and saw a well in the field. Three flocks were lying beside it, because the flocks were given water from that well. The stone on the mouth of the well was large.

3 And all the droves would be gathered there, and they would roll4 the stone from on the mouth of the well and give drink to the flock, and return the stone on the mouth of the well, to its place.
3 And all the flocks would be gathered there, and they would roll away the stone from the mouth of the well, and give drink to the sheep, and restore the stone onto the mouth of the well, into its place.3
3 When all the flocks were gathered there, the shepherds would roll the stone off the mouth of the well and water the flock. Then they would put the stone back in its place on the mouth of the well.

4 And Jacob said to them, "My brothers, from where are you?" And they said, "From Harran are we."
4 Now Jacob said to them, "Brothers, from where are you?" Now they said, "From Harran are we."
4 Jacob said to them, "My brothers, where are you from?" They said, "We are from Harran."

5 And he said to them, "Do you know Laban, son of Nahor?" And they said, "We know."
5 Now he said to them, "Do you come to know Laban, the son of Nahor?" Now they said, "We come to know."
5 He said to them, "Do you know Laban son of Nahor?" They said, "We know him."

6 And he said to them, "Is there peace to him5?" And they said, "Peace; and look, Rachel his daughter, coming with the flock."
6 Now he said to them, "Is he healthy?" Now they said, "He is healthy." He was still speaking, and look, Rachel his daughter was coming with the sheep of her father; for she was grazing the sheep of her father.4
6 He asked them, "Is he well?" They said, "He is well. And look, here comes his daughter Rachel with the flock."

7 And he said, "Look, the day is still great6; it is not the time for the livestock to be gathered. Give drink to the flock, and go, shepherd."
7 And Jacob said, "There is still much day; not yet the hour for the cattle to be gathered. Having given drink to the sheep, having gone away, graze."
7 He said, "Look, it is still broad daylight. It is not time for the livestock to be gathered in. Water the flock, and go, let them graze."

8 And they said, "We are not able, until all the droves are gathered and they roll the stone from on the mouth of the well; and we give drink to the flock."
8 Now they said, "We shall not be able, until all the shepherds5 are gathered and they roll away the stone from the mouth of the well; and we will give drink to the sheep."
8 They said, "We cannot, until all the flocks are gathered and they roll the stone off the mouth of the well. Then we water the flock."

9 He was still speaking with them, and Rachel came with the flock that was her father's, for she was shepherding7.
9 He was still speaking to them, and Rachel the daughter of Laban was coming with the sheep of her father, for she was grazing the sheep of her father.

11 And Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted his voice and wept.
11 And Jacob kissed Rachel, and, having shouted with his voice, he wept.7
11 Then Jacob kissed Rachel, and he wept out loud.

12 And Jacob told Rachel that he was her father's brother, and that he was Rebekah's son; and she ran and told her father.
12 And he announced‸ to Rachel that he was her father's brother, and that he was Rebekah's son; and, having run, she reported to her father according to these words.
12 Jacob told Rachel that he was her father's relative, and that he was Rebekah's son. She ran and told her father.

13 And it was, when Laban heard the report of Jacob, son of his sister, and he ran to meet him, and embraced him and kissed him, and brought him to his house. And he recounted9 to Laban all these words.
13 And it came to be, when Laban heard the name8 of Jacob, the son of his sister, he ran to a meeting with him, and, having embraced him, he kissed him, and brought him into his house; and he related to Laban all these logoi.

14 And Laban said to him, "Surely10 my bone and my flesh11 are you." And he dwelt with him a month of days.
14 And Laban said to him,‸ "From my bones and from my flesh9 are you." And he was with him a month of days.
14 Laban said to him, "Surely you are my bone and my flesh." And he stayed with him a whole month.

15 And Laban said to Jacob, "Is it because you are my brother, and you shall serve me gratis12? Tell me, what are your wages?"
15 Now Laban said to Jacob, "For since you are my brother, you shall not be slave to me gratis10; report to me what your wage is."
15 Then Laban said to Jacob, "Should you work for me for free just because you are my relative? Tell me what your wages will be."

16 And to Laban two daughters: the name of the great one13 Leah, and the name of the small one13 Rachel.
16 Now to Laban there were two daughters: the name of the greater Leah, and the name of the younger Rachel.
16 Laban had two daughters. The older one was named Leah, and the younger one was named Rachel.

17 And the eyes of Leah were tender14, and Rachel was beautiful of form and beautiful of sight15.
17 Leah's eyes were tender, and Rachel was beautiful in form and beautiful to look at.

18 And Jacob loved Rachel, and he said, "I will serve you seven years for Rachel your daughter, the small one13."
18 Now Jacob loved Rachel, and he said, "I will be slave to you seven years for Rachel your daughter, the younger."
18 Jacob loved Rachel. He said, "I will work for you seven years for Rachel, your younger daughter."

19 And Laban said, "Good16 is my giving her to you, more than my giving her to another man. Dwell with me."
19 Now Laban said to him, "Better is my giving her to you than my giving her to a different man. Dwell with me."
19 Laban said, "It is better for me to give her to you than to give her to another man. Stay with me."

20 And Jacob served for Rachel seven years, and they were in his eyes like a few17 days in his loving her.
20 So Jacob worked seven years for Rachel, and they seemed to him like a few days in his love for her.

21 And Jacob said to Laban, "Give18 my woman, for my days are filled, and let me come in to her."
21 Now Jacob said to Laban, "Give back13 to me my woman, for my days are filled, so that I may enter to her."
21 Then Jacob said to Laban, "Give me my wife, because my time is complete. Let me sleep with her."

22 And Laban gathered all the men of the place and made a feast.
22 So Laban gathered all the men of the place and made a feast.

23 And it was in the evening, and he took Leah his daughter and brought her to him, and he came in to her.
23 And evening came to be, and, having taken Leah his daughter, he brought her in to Jacob14, and Jacob entered to her.
23 In the evening Laban took his daughter Leah and brought her to Jacob, and Jacob slept with her.

24 And Laban gave to her Zilpah his maid, to Leah his daughter, a maid.
24 Laban gave his maid Zilpah to his daughter Leah to be her maid.

25 And it was in the morning, and look, she was Leah19. And he said to Laban, "What is this you have done to me? Was it not for Rachel that I served with you? And why have you deceived20 me?"
25 Now morning came to be, and look, she was Leah. Now Jacob said to Laban, "What is this you have done to me? Was it not for Rachel that I was slave to you? And why have you misled me?"15
25 When morning came, look, it was Leah! Jacob said to Laban, "What is this you have done to me? Didn't I work for you for Rachel? Why have you deceived me?"

25 ἐγένετο δὲ πρωί, καὶ ἰδοὺ ἦν Λεία· εἶπεν δὲ Ἰακὼβ Λαβάν Τί τοῦτο ἐποίησάς μοι; οὐ περὶ Ῥαχὴλ ἐδούλευσα σοί; καὶ ἵνα τί παρελογίσω με;

26 And Laban said, "It is not done thus in our place21, to give the younger before the firstborn.
26 Now Laban said, "It is not thus in our place, to give the younger sooner than the elder.
26 Laban said, "It is not done that way in our place, to give the younger daughter before the firstborn.

27 Fill the week22 of this one, and we will give23 you this one too, for the service24 that you will serve with me still seven other years."
27 Complete then the sevenths16 of this one, and I will give you this one too, for the working which you work with me still seven other years."
27 Finish this one's week, and we will give you that one too, in return for working with me another seven years."

28 And Jacob did thus, and filled the week22 of this one; and he gave him Rachel his daughter, to him for a woman.
28 Now Jacob did thus, and filled up the sevenths of this one; and Laban gave Rachel his daughter to him for a woman.
28 Jacob did so, and he finished this one's week. Then Laban gave him his daughter Rachel to be his wife.

29 And Laban gave to Rachel his daughter Bilhah his maid, to her for a maid.
29 Laban gave his maid Bilhah to his daughter Rachel to be her maid.

30 And he came in also to Rachel, and he loved also Rachel more than Leah25; and he served with him still seven other years.
30 And he entered‸ to Rachel; but‸ he loved Rachel more than Leah; and he was slave to him‸ seven other years.
30 Jacob slept with Rachel too. He also loved Rachel more than Leah. And he worked for Laban another seven years.

31 And Adonai saw that Leah was hated26, and he opened her womb; and Rachel was barren.
31 Now the Lord God18, having seen that Leah was hated, opened her womb; but Rachel was barren.
31 When the LORD saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb. But Rachel was barren.

32 And Leah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Reuben27, for she said, "For Adonai has seen my affliction; for now my man will love me."
32 And Leah conceived and bore a son to Jacob; now she called his name Reuben,‸ saying, "Because the Lord has seen my humiliation;‸ now my man will love me."19
32 Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Reuben, because she said, "It is because the LORD has seen my affliction; for now my husband will love me."

33 And she conceived again and bore a son, and said, "For Adonai has heard that I am hated26, and he has given me this one too." And she called his name Simeon28.
33 And Leah conceived again and bore a son, a second, to Jacob, and said, "The Lord has heard that I am hated, and he has given in addition to me this one too." And she called his name Simeon.20
33 She became pregnant again and gave birth to a son. She said, "It is because the LORD has heard that I am hated, and he has given me this one too." She named him Simeon.

34 And she conceived again and bore a son, and said, "Now, this turn, my man will be attached29 to me, for I have borne him three sons." Therefore30 he called31 his name Levi.
34 And she further conceived and bore a son, and said, "In the now kairos my man will be on my side21, for I have borne him three sons." Therefore his name was called Levi.
34 She became pregnant again and gave birth to a son. She said, "Now, this time, my husband will be attached to me, because I have borne him three sons." So he named him Levi.

35 And she conceived again and bore a son, and said, "This turn I will confess32 Adonai." Therefore30 she called his name Judah33. And she stood still from bearing34.
35 And, having further conceived, she bore a son, and said, "Now further this: I will confess to the Lord." Therefore she called his name Judah.22 And she stood still from bearing.
35 She became pregnant again and gave birth to a son. She said, "This time I will give thanks to the LORD." So she named him Judah. Then she stopped having children.

  1. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Ruling 39

"Lifted his feet" is found only here, and the idiom of the body is kept (guide §4.12). Genesis Rabbah 70:8 reads it from what went before: after the promise at Bethel, "his heart lifted his feet," and he walked light. "The sons of the east" (בְנֵי קֶדֶם) are the peoples east of Canaan (Judg 6:3; 1 Kgs 5:10; Job 1:3). Harran lies north and east, and the Hebrew uses the wide name.

  2. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "three flocks of sheep" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 2, 6

עֵדֶר is a drove, a flock or herd driven together as one unit. Jacob's present to Esau goes "drove by drove" (32:17, 20); a "drove of goats" (Song 4:1; 6:5); Mic 2:12. צֹאן is the flock as a kind, sheep and goats together, and keeps "flock." So עֶדְרֵי צֹאן is "droves of flock," and the Hebrew's two words stay two. "Of sheep" narrows צֹאן to one animal.

  3. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Ruling 6

The constructions vary and stay varied. The stone is "great on the mouth" (v. 2), rolled "from on the mouth" and brought back "on the mouth … to its place" (v. 3), and rolled "from on the mouth" in the shepherds' answer (v. 8) and by Jacob alone (v. 10). The great stone is why the shepherds wait for one another: it is moved when all the droves are gathered (vv. 3, 8). Jacob moves it by himself. This well scene answers the one at Gen 24. There a servant waited at the spring for a woman, and she gave drink to him and to his camels (24:11–20). Here the man arrives, and he gives drink to the woman's flock. Moses does the same for the daughters of the priest of Midian (Exod 2:15–17).

  4. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 17, 2

גָּלַל "roll" (vv. 3, 8, 10) is the verb Gilgal is named for: "this day I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from on you" (Josh 5:9). Stones are rolled to a cave's mouth at Josh 10:18, and the stone of the tomb is rolled at Mark 16:3–4.

  5. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 2, 39

הֲשָׁלוֹם לוֹ "Is there peace to him?" is the greeting question, kept as it stands (43:27; 2 Kgs 4:26; 9:17–22). שָׁלוֹם is wholeness and well-being, and the shepherds answer with the bare noun, "Peace." The WPRB has "Is he well?"

  6. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Ruling 2

"The day is still great": the day is at its height, far from evening, when the flocks were gathered in. Watering at noon was the shepherds' custom (Song 1:7, "where you make them crouch at noon"). Jacob's "go, shepherd" sends them back to pasture; he wants them gone before Rachel arrives.

  7. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 10, 18

רֹעָה הִוא "she was shepherding" uses the participle of רָעָה, as Abel was "shepherding flock" (4:2), and the participle stays a verb (10). Rachel's name, רָחֵל, is "ewe" (31:38; Isa 53:7, "like a ewe before her shearers"). The shepherd is named for one of her animals. The daughters of the priest of Midian shepherd their father's flock in the same way (Exod 2:16).

  8. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Ruling 6

The verse names Laban "brother of his mother" three times: Rachel is his daughter, the flock is his, and Jacob waters it. The narrator follows Jacob's mind back to Rebekah, who sent him (27:43; 28:2). "Approached" is נָגַשׁ, the verb of his coming close to Isaac to be felt and kissed (27:21–27); here, too, a kiss follows (v. 11).

  9. Decision↩ Back to the text

    Expected: "told" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 2, 20

וַיְסַפֵּר is the piel of סָפַר. The qal is to number, to count (15:5, "number the stars"), and that is the home gloss; the piel is to tell over, to recount in order (40:8–9; 41:8, the dreams told to Joseph and to the magicians). Jacob tells Laban everything that has happened, from Beersheba to the well, one thing after another.

  10. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "Surely thou art my bone and my flesh" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 20, 2

אַךְ is "only" by default. At the head of a sentence it asserts, "surely" (9:5; 26:9; 44:28), a split by construction (20). "Only" would make Laban say Jacob is his kin and nothing more, which the Hebrew does not mean.

  11. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 2, 37

"My bone and my flesh" is the formula of kinship (Judg 9:2; 2 Sam 5:1; 19:13–14), first spoken by the man of the woman, "bone from my bones and flesh from my flesh" (2:23). Laban says it before Jacob has asked for anything, and before he sets him to work (v. 15).

  12. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Ruling 2

חִנָּם "gratis," the core gloss, is "without pay." The Satan uses it in Job: "Is it gratis that Job fears Elohim?" (Job 1:9). Laban's offer of wages opens the twenty years in which, Jacob says, Laban "changed my wages ten times" (31:7, 41). מַשְׂכֹּרֶת "wages" is from שָׂכַר "hire," the root of שָׂכָר "wage" (15:1; 30:18). The question opens with הֲכִי, "Is it because," and the clause that follows is joined by "and."

  13. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "the elder … the younger" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 127, 2

Of a pair, קָטָן is "the small one" (127j), and its partner גָּדוֹל keeps its home gloss as "the great one." Isaac's two sons were named the same way (27:1, 15, 42): Esau "his great son," Jacob "her small son." The words cover age, size and standing. In v. 26 Laban uses another pair, צְעִירָה "younger" and בְּכִירָה "firstborn," and it is printed with its own glosses.

  14. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "Leah was tender eyed" (KJV) / "Leah's eyes were weak" (RSV)

    Rulings 1, 2

רַךְ is "tender": the tender calf (18:7), the tender children who cannot be driven hard (33:13), the "tender and delicate" woman (Deut 28:56). Whether Leah's eyes are delicate, a beauty, or weak, a flaw, is a crux. The LXX ἀσθενεῖς "weak" and the Vulgate lippis "bleary" take the flaw. Targum Onkelos יָאָין "lovely" takes the beauty. b. Bava Batra 123a has them tender from weeping, because Leah had heard she was meant for Esau, the elder daughter for the elder son. "Tender" is the home gloss and holds both readings, so the crux stays open (1). The contrast with Rachel comes from the clause that follows, not from the adjective.

  15. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Ruling 2

"Beautiful of form and beautiful of sight" is said again only of Joseph, Rachel's son (39:6), in the masculine. Abigail is "good of understanding and beautiful of form" (1 Sam 25:3). תֹּאַר "form" is the shape of a body (1 Sam 16:18; Isa 52:14); מַרְאֶה "sight" is how it looks.

  16. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Ruling 2

מִן is the Hebrew comparative, "good … more than": Laban would rather give his daughter to a kinsman than to an outsider. He does not say yes to the terms Jacob named, and v. 25 shows what that left open.

  17. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Ruling 127

אֲחָדִים "a few" (127j) is the word Rebekah used when she sent Jacob away: "dwell with him a few days, until your brother's fury turns" (27:44). Her few days have become seven years, and the seven years were like a few days in Jacob's eyes. They will be twenty years before he leaves (31:38, 41). The בְּ of "in his loving her" can be "because he loved her" or "while he loved her"; the English keeps the preposition.

  18. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "Give me my wife" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 2, 20

הָבָה is the imperative of יָהַב "give." The home gloss "up" belongs to its use as a rousing call before "let us" (11:3–4, 7). Here it takes an object, as again at 30:1 ("give me sons") and 47:15–16, and has its plain sense; "up" would make no sense. "Give" is printed, and no "me" is added: the Hebrew says only "give my woman."

  19. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 2, 74

"And it was in the morning, and look, she was Leah." The narrator gives the discovery through Jacob's eyes, with הִנֵּה "look," and holds it until morning. The dark tent answers the blind father: Jacob came to Isaac in his brother's clothes and said "I am Esau your firstborn" (27:19), and now the elder sister is brought to him in the younger's place. Genesis Rabbah 70:19 gives Leah the reply: did your father not call "Esau," and you answered him?

  20. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 2, 95

The piel of רָמָה is "deceive" (1 Sam 19:17; 28:12; 2 Sam 19:27). It is the root of מִרְמָה "deceit," Isaac's word for what Jacob did: "your brother came with deceit and took your blessing" (27:35). The one who came with deceit is now deceived, and the English keeps "deceive" and "deceit" on one root so the reader hears it.

  21. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 2, 37, 120

"In our place" sets Laban's custom against the word "place" said six times at Bethel (28:11–19). "The younger before the firstborn" turns back on Jacob, who took the firstborn's birthright (בְּכֹרָה, 25:31–34) and blessing (27:36). בְּכִירָה "firstborn" is the feminine of בְּכוֹר and sounds like the birthright. לִפְנֵי is of time here, the preposition "before" (120).

  22. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 2, 6

שָׁבוּעַ "week" is a span of seven: of years (Dan 9:24–27), the feast of weeks (Deut 16:9–10), and here the seven days of a wedding feast (Judg 14:12, 17). It is kept apart from שֶׁבַע "seven," in the same verse, and from שָׁבַע "swear," which shares its letters. "Fill the week" keeps the home gloss of מָלֵא, as in Jacob's "my days are filled" (v. 21).

  23. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Ruling 74

וְנִתְּנָה is pointed as the qal, "and we will give." The same consonants and vowels can be the niphal, "and she shall be given." The LXX has δώσω "I will give." The Masoretic text is printed: Laban speaks for "we," the household and the custom of the place.

  24. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 34, 6

עֲבֹדָה is the noun of עָבַד "serve," and the cognate pair "the service that you will serve" is kept (6). It is labour owed to another (Exod 1:14; 2:23) and the service of the sanctuary (Exod 12:25–26; Num 3:7–8); "service" covers both. Jacob's service is a bride-price paid in years, as Hosea remembers: "Israel served for a woman, and for a woman he kept" (Hos 12:13).

  25. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Ruling 2

מִלֵּאָה "more than Leah" is the comparative מִן: Jacob loves both, Rachel more. The next verse calls Leah "hated," and the law knows the same pair: "the loved one and the hated one" of a man with two women, where the son of the hated one may be the firstborn (Deut 21:15–17).

  26. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 2, 6

שְׂנוּאָה "hated" keeps the home gloss of שָׂנֵא. The hate is loving less, second place in a man's love (v. 30; Deut 21:15–17), as in "Jacob I loved and Esau I hated" (Mal 1:2–3; Rom 9:13) and Luke 14:26. The English keeps the hard word because Leah says it of herself (v. 33).

  27. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 17, 18

Reuben, רְאוּבֵן, sounds like רְאוּ בֵן "See, a son!" Leah explains it with another phrase: "Adonai has seen (רָאָה) my affliction." The verb of seeing is in the name, but English cannot carry it, so the pun stays in this note (17). "Seen my affliction" recalls Hagar's son, named because Adonai heard her affliction (16:11), and it anticipates the Exodus, "I have surely seen the affliction of my people" (Exod 3:7). The names are in the names table.

  28. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 17, 18

Simeon, שִׁמְעוֹן, is from שָׁמַע "hear": "Adonai has heard that I am hated." The name and the verb share the root, but English "hear" cannot be the name, so the pun stays in this note. Ishmael was named the same way, "El hears" (16:11).

  29. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 17, 18, 97

Levi, לֵוִי, is explained by יִלָּוֶה "will be attached," the niphal of לָוָה. The verb returns of the Levites themselves, "that they may be attached to you and serve you" (Num 18:2, 4), and of the foreigners "attached to Adonai" (Isa 56:3, 6). The pun stays in this note. "Join" is kept for חָבַר. הַפַּעַם "this turn" is the word of 2:23, "this turn, bone from my bones," and Leah says it in vv. 34 and 35 (97).

  30. Decision↩ Back to the text

    Expected: "therefore" (KJV, RSV)

    Ruling 2

עַל־כֵּן is "on thus," the set phrase that gives the reason for a name or a custom (2:24; 10:9; 11:9; 32:33). Its parts keep their sense: כֵּן is "thus," the home gloss, and עַל gives the ground. English has that sense in one word, so "therefore" is printed, with the tag on כֵּן.

  31. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "therefore was his name called Levi" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 2, 74

The Masoretic text has the masculine קָרָא "he called," where Leah names her other sons in the feminine (vv. 32–33, 35). The LXX has a passive, ἐκλήθη "was called," and the KJV and RSV follow it. The Masoretic text is printed. "He" may be Jacob, whom Leah hopes will be attached to her, or an unnamed namer; the English does not choose.

  32. Decision↩ Back to the text

    Expected: "praise" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 2, 3

The hiphil of יָדָה is to acknowledge openly: sin confessed (Lev 5:5; 16:21; Ps 32:5; Prov 28:13), and the name of Adonai confessed (1 Kgs 8:33, 35). It is also the thanksgiving of the Psalms, "Confess to Adonai, for he is good" (Ps 136:1). "Praise" is left for הָלַל, so the two do not merge. The LXX ἐξομολογήσομαι is "confess, acknowledge," the word of Matt 11:25 and Phil 2:11 ("every tongue confess"). Jacob's blessing plays on the name again: "Judah, you, your brothers shall confess you" (49:8). The WPRB has "give thanks to."

  33. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 17, 18

Judah, יְהוּדָה, is heard in אוֹדֶה "I will confess." The name of the tribe and of the kingdom gives the Jews (יְהוּדִים) their name. English cannot carry the pun, so it stays in this note.

  34. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Ruling 2

וַתַּעֲמֹד מִלֶּדֶת "she stood still from bearing": עָמַד is to stand and to stay, to stop moving (Josh 10:13, the sun "stood still"). Leah stopped bearing for a time; she bears again at 30:17–21. The next chapter opens with Rachel's envy.

γῆν ἀνατολῶν, "the land of the east," where the Masoretic version reads "the land of the sons of the east": the Greek has no word for "the sons" (בְּנֵי), and the lack is marked. The plus that follows names the house Jacob is going to in the words Isaac used when he sent him (28:5: "to Laban, the son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, the mother of Jacob and Esau"), so that the arrival answers the sending.

    Ruling 53

ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτό, "together," at the one place (Acts 2:1), is Swete's text from Alexandrinus, where Rahlfs reads differently; the Masoretic version reads "by it" (עָלֶיהָ), the well. The Greek has ποίμνια προβάτων, "flocks of sheep," for "droves of flock," and ἀναπαυόμενα, "reposing," for the flock's crouching (רֹבְצִים). It has no second "look" before the flocks.

The stone is "on the mouth" of the well (ἐπὶ τῷ στόματι, 29:2), rolled away "from the mouth" (ἀπὸ τοῦ στόματος, 29:3, 8, 10) and restored "onto the mouth" (ἐπὶ τὸ στόμα, with the accusative of motion): the Greek varies preposition and case with each movement of the stone, and the English keeps each (6). The well of Rebekah (24:11–20) had no stone; here the stone and its movements carry the scene. ἀποκαθίστημι, "restore," is the Greek's verb where the Masoretic version reads "return."

  4. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 53, 54, 143

In the Masoretic version the shepherds answer "Peace," and their answer runs on: "and look, Rachel his daughter, coming with the flock." Swete's text, from Alexandrinus, ends their answer at Ὑγιαίνει, "He is healthy," and the narrator takes up Rachel's coming, "He was still speaking, and look," adding that she grazed her father's sheep, as at 29:9. Rahlfs reads differently in both places, so the alignment sets no mark; the two clauses the Masoretic version lacks are marked as pluses. The question and its answer are ὑγιαίνει, "is he healthy" (3 John 2), where the Masoretic version reads "Is there peace to him?" and "Peace."

    Ruling 53

τοὺς ποιμένας, "the shepherds," where the Masoretic version reads "the droves" (הָעֲדָרִים, as at 29:3); the Samaritan Pentateuch reads הָרֹעִים, "the shepherds," with the Greek: it is the herdsmen, not the flocks, who must gather to move the stone. The verb ἀποκυλίσωσι, "they roll away," is Swete's text from Alexandrinus, where Rahlfs reads differently.

The Greek has no words for the Masoretic version's "and the flock of Laban, brother of his mother" after Rachel is named; the phrase stands once, at the watering, where the Masoretic version has it twice. The lack is marked. ἴδεν is Swete's spelling of εἶδεν, from Alexandrinus.

φιλέω with a person as the object of a greeting is "kiss" (148b), here and at 29:13. βοήσας τῇ φωνῇ αὐτοῦ, "having shouted with his voice," where the Masoretic version reads "lifted his voice."

τὸ ὄνομα, "the name," where the Masoretic version reads "the report" (שֵׁמַע): the Greek gives the word the sense of שֵׁם, "name," whose consonants it shares. Laban hears the name of his sister's son and runs.

Ἐκ τῶν ὀστῶν μου καὶ ἐκ τῆς σαρκός μου, "From my bones and from my flesh," the words of the human over the woman at 2:23 (ὀστοῦν ἐκ τῶν ὀστέων μου καὶ σὰρξ ἐκ τῆς σαρκός μου), where the Masoretic version reads "Surely my bone and my flesh are you." The Greek has no word for "Surely" (אַךְ), and the lack is marked. It has ἦν, "he was," with him a month, where the Masoretic version reads "he dwelt."

Ὅτι γὰρ ἀδελφός μου εἶ, οὐ δουλεύσεις μοι δωρεάν, "For since you are my brother, you shall not be slave to me gratis": a statement carrying its negation, where the Masoretic version asks, "Is it because you are my brother, and you shall serve me gratis?" Swete closes the clause with a raised point, not a question mark. The sense is the same refusal of unpaid service, but the Greek states it, and the negation is printed. δωρεάν is "gratis" (the core table, with חִנָּם).

  11. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 53, 54, 143

ἀσθενεῖς, "weak," where the Masoretic version reads "tender" (רַכּוֹת): the Hebrew word is soft or delicate, and the reader cannot tell whether it is praise; the Greek makes it a weakness, and sets Leah's eyes against Rachel's beauty as a lack. Rachel is καλὴ τῷ εἴδει καὶ ὡραία τῇ ὄψει, "beautiful in figure and lovely in appearance," where the Masoretic version repeats one word, "beautiful … and beautiful" (יְפַת). The alignment marks "was" (הָיְתָה) as lacking, but Swete prints ἦν from Alexandrinus, where Rahlfs lacks it, so nothing is lacking.

  12. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 53, 54, 137, 143

Swete's text, from Alexandrinus, ends the verse at "seven years" and has no words for the Masoretic version's "and they were in his eyes like a few days in his loving her"; Rahlfs reads differently here. The lack is marked. Jacob's love for Rachel stands in the Greek at 29:18 and 29:30 (ἀγαπάω, "love," as at 22:2), and the seven years pass without the comparison.

    Rulings 2, 148

Ἀπόδος, "Give back," render what is owed (Matt 22:21), where the Masoretic version reads "Give" (הָבָה): the Greek has Jacob claim his wife as a debt Laban must pay. It also has ὅπως, "so that," for "and let me come in."

  14. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 54, 143

The alignment lists one Greek word of this verse that it could not place as a plus; it is Ἰακώβ, "to Jacob," which stands where the Masoretic version reads "to him," and is set as a different wording, not as a plus. The second Ἰακώβ, the subject of "entered," is the seeded plus. The Greek has ἐγένετο ἑσπέρα, "evening came to be," for "it was in the evening."

    Rulings 2, 128

παρελογίσω, "have you misled," the verb of false reckoning (Col 2:4; Jas 1:22), where the Masoretic version reads "deceived" (רִמִּיתָנִי), the verb of the "deceit" (מִרְמָה) with which Jacob took the blessing (27:35; 128a). The Greek does not join the two: at 27:35 Jacob came μετὰ δόλου, "with deceit," and Laban's trick takes another word.

τὰ ἕβδομα ταύτης, "the sevenths of this one," the neuter plural of ἕβδομος, "seventh," the seven days of the wedding (Judg 14:12, 17), where the Masoretic version reads "the week" (שְׁבֻעַ): the Greek has a word of the count, not a name for the week. Laban says συντέλεσον, "complete," and Jacob ἀνεπλήρωσεν, "filled up" (29:28), where the Masoretic version repeats "fill" (מָלֵא); the varied verbs are kept (6). The service is ἐργασία ἣν ἐργᾷ, "the working which you work," in the present, where the Masoretic version reads "the service that you will serve"; and Laban speaks for himself, δώσω, "I will give," where the Masoretic version has "we will give."

    Rulings 2, 18, 148, 149

Βάλλα is Swete's spelling of Bilhah (בִּלְהָה); it is also the form the lexicon holds for Bera, king of Sodom (14:2), where the same Greek spells בֶּרַע. The name prints by its referent (149a), as Θαιμάν prints "Tema" and "Teman" (148g): this is Rachel's servant-girl, and the familiar form is printed, unmarked.

Κύριος ὁ θεός, "the Lord God," is Swete's text from Alexandrinus, where Rahlfs reads differently and the Masoretic version reads "ADONAI" alone: the one who opens Leah's womb is named with the pair of the garden (2:4–22).

  19. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 18, 24

The Masoretic version explains Reuben (רְאוּבֵן) by "ADONAI has seen my affliction" (רָאָה בְּעָנְיִי), with "see, a son" (רְאוּ בֵן) in the sound of the name. The Greek keeps the verb, εἶδεν, "has seen," and spells the name Ῥουβήν, which carries no sound of it; the explanation stands without its pun. The Greek has no word for either "for" (כִּי) of the Masoretic version, and the lacks are marked; ταπείνωσις, "humiliation," is the word of Mary's song (Luke 1:48). The names of Leah's sons and their explanations are set out in the table.

  20. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Ruling 18

Simeon (שִׁמְעוֹן) is explained by "has heard" (שָׁמַע); the Greek keeps the verb, ἤκουσεν, and spells the name Συμεών (Luke 2:25; Acts 15:14), so that the explanation stands without the sound. προσέδωκεν, "has given in addition," where the Masoretic version reads "has given."

Ἐν τῷ νῦν καιρῷ πρὸς ἐμοῦ ἔσται ὁ ἀνήρ μου, "In the now kairos my man will be on my side," where the Masoretic version reads "Now, this turn, my man will be attached to me": the Hebrew explains Levi (לֵוִי) by "be attached" (לָוָה), and the Greek gives the sense, a husband who takes his wife's part, with no sound of the name. τέτοκα, "I have borne," and the passive ἐκλήθη, "was called," are Swete's text from Alexandrinus, where Rahlfs reads differently.

ἐξομολογήσομαι, "I will confess" (Rom 15:9; Phil 2:11), where the Masoretic version reads "I will confess" (אוֹדֶה, 128j): the Hebrew explains Judah (יְהוּדָה) by the verb, and the Greek keeps its sense while Ἰουδά carries no sound of it. Νῦν ἔτι τοῦτο, "Now further this," stands for "This turn" (הַפַּעַם).
