וְאֵלֶּה תֹּלְדוֹת עֵשָׂו: the heading of 2:4, 5:1, 6:9, 11:10, 25:12, 25:19, given twice to Esau (36:1, 9) as it was to no other. The first introduces Esau's household in Canaan and its move (vv. 1–8); the second, his line in the mountain of Seir (vv. 9–43). Ishmael's producings (25:12–18) came just before Isaac's (25:19); Esau's come just before Jacob's (37:2). "Esau—he is Edom" takes up the naming at the red stew (25:30), and returns at vv. 8, 19, 43. The WPRB has "family history."

The list of Esau's women does not match the earlier notices. At 26:34 they are Judith daughter of Beeri the Hittite and Basemath daughter of Elon the Hittite; at 28:9, Mahalath daughter of Ishmael, sister of Nebaioth. Here Adah is the daughter of Elon, Oholibamah the daughter of Anah, and Basemath the daughter of Ishmael. Genesis Rabbah and Rashi harmonize by second names (Basemath of 26:34 is Adah; Mahalath of 28:9 is this Basemath). The names are printed as each verse gives them. "Daughter of Anah, daughter of Zibeon": the Samaritan Pentateuch, the LXX and the Peshitta read "son of Zibeon," since Anah is Zibeon's son at v. 24; in the Masoretic text the second "daughter" may also be read of Oholibamah, Zibeon's granddaughter, and English keeps both. Zibeon is a Hivite here and a son of Seir the Horite at v. 20; חִוִּי and חֹרִי differ by one letter, and many read "Horite" here. The Masoretic "Hivite" is printed.

The names in this chapter are printed in the Masoretic spelling, verse by verse; their forms, meanings, and the variants of 1 Chr 1:35–54, which repeats the lists, are in the names table below. Eliphaz the Temanite, the first of Job's friends (Job 2:11), carries the name of Esau's firstborn and of his son Teman (v. 11).

The qere is יְעוּשׁ "Jeush," and the ketiv here and at v. 14 is יעיש "Jeish"; v. 18 and 1 Chr 1:35 write יְעוּשׁ. The difference is a vowel letter in a name, with no difference of sense, so the qere is printed and the ketiv only recorded (19).

וַיֵּלֶךְ אֶל־אֶרֶץ "and he went to a land" names no land. The Samaritan Pentateuch and the LXX have "went out from the land of Canaan," and the Peshitta "went to the land of Seir"; modern versions supply "another land" (NJPS) or "a land away from" (RSV). The Masoretic text is printed as it stands. Esau was already in Seir when Jacob came back from Harran (32:4; 33:14–16); this chapter gives the reason for the move, the crowding of the herds (v. 7), not its date.

"The land… was not able to lift them" is the sentence of Abram and Lot, almost word for word: "and the land did not lift them, to dwell together, for their gains were vast" (13:6). Again the brothers part for the size of their herds, and again one goes east of the land of promise. נָשָׂא keeps "lift," to carry. מִשֶּׁבֶת יַחְדָּו "too vast for dwelling together" is the מִן of excess.

Timna is a concubine here, a sister of the Horite chief Lotan (v. 22), and a chief's name in the list of v. 40; 1 Chr 1:36 counts Timna and Amalek among the sons of Eliphaz. Amalek is the enemy of Israel in the wilderness (Exod 17:8–16; Deut 25:17–19). b. Sanhedrin 99b: Timna, a king's daughter, wanted to join the family of Abraham and was turned away; she said, "Better to be a maid to this people than a princess of another," became Eliphaz's concubine, and from her came Amalek, who afflicted Israel, because the fathers should not have turned her away.

Expected: "dukes" (KJV) / "chiefs" (RSV)
אַלּוּף is the head of an אֶלֶף, a "thousand," which is also a clan (Judg 6:15, "my thousand is the poorest in Manasseh"; Mic 5:1). It is used of the chiefs of Edom (here; Exod 15:15; 1 Chr 1:51–54) and of the clan-heads of Judah (Zech 9:7; 12:5–6). The Vulgate's dux, "leader," is the KJV's "duke." A homograph אַלּוּף is the close companion (Mic 7:5; Prov 16:28; Ps 55:14; Jer 3:4 "the companion of my youth"). The collocation decides (3), and "chief" is printed. "Chieftain" is נָשִׂיא's (17:20; 25:16).

Korah is Oholibamah's son (vv. 5, 14, 18), and appears here also among the chiefs of Eliphaz. The Samaritan Pentateuch lacks "chief Korah" in this verse, and 1 Chr 1:36 does not list him among Eliphaz's sons. A second Korah, a clan of Eliphaz named for a son of Oholibamah, or a doubling: the Masoretic text is printed as it stands.

The Horites are "the dwellers of the land" before Esau: Kedorlaomer struck them "in their mountain Seir" (14:6), and Deut 2:12, 22 says that the sons of Esau dispossessed them and dwelt in their place. Seir is both the mountain and the ancestor of its first people. The singular "the Horite" with the article is collective, here and at vv. 21, 29–30.

Two Anahs stand in this genealogy: a son of Seir and brother of Zibeon (vv. 20, 29), and a son of Zibeon (vv. 2, 14, 24), the father of Oholibamah (v. 25). The list of Zibeon's sons opens with "and" (וְאַיָּה וַעֲנָה), printed "both… and"; 1 Chr 1:40 has the plain list.

Expected: "found the mules" (KJV) / "found the hot springs" (RSV)
הַיֵּמִם occurs only here, and the versions divide. The Vulgate has aquas calidas, "hot waters," and the Peshitta "waters"; Jerome explains it from the hot springs of the region. The LXX transliterates (τὸν Ιαμιν). The Samaritan Pentateuch reads הָאֵימִם "the Emim," the giant people of 14:5 and Deut 2:10–11, and Onkelos and Pseudo-Jonathan render "the mighty ones." b. Pesahim 54a and Genesis Rabbah 82:14 take the word as "mules," which Anah found by crossing a donkey with a she-horse, as he shepherded donkeys; Rashi and the KJV follow. The RSV prints "hot springs" with the Vulgate. English cannot hold water, animals and a people in one word, and no reading has the support of a second occurrence (25). As the LXX did, the word is transliterated, so that no reading is printed over the others; the WPRB keeps it.

At v. 25 Anah's son is Dishon (דִּשֹׁן); this verse then lists "the sons of Dishan" (דִישָׁן), the spelling of Seir's son at vv. 21, 28, 30. 1 Chr 1:41 has "the sons of Dishon" here, and many take v. 26 to continue v. 25. The Masoretic spelling is held. Hemdan (חֶמְדָּן) is Hamran (חַמְרָן) in 1 Chr 1:41; ד and ר are easily confused.

Expected: "the Horites" (KJV) / "the Horites" (RSV)
The source tags this word H2753, the personal name Hori (v. 22), but it is the collective gentilic הַחֹרִי of vv. 21 and 29, "the Horite." It is printed "Horite," with the source's tag kept and the departure logged here, as 127(d) did for 27:3. לְאַלֻּפֵיהֶם "by their chiefs" is chief by chief, or chiefdom by chiefdom.

"Before a king reigned for the sons of Israel" looks from a time when Israel had kings. Ibn Ezra reports that one Yitzhaki dated the list to the days of Jehoshaphat, and answers that "his book deserves to be burned"; he holds the verse to be prophecy. Spinoza cites it against the Mosaic authorship of the Pentateuch (Tractatus Theologico-Politicus 8). The promise "kings shall go out from your loins" was made to Jacob at 35:11; Edom's kings come first. Israel will ask for "a king, like all the nations" (1 Sam 8:5), and Edom already has one when Israel comes out of Egypt (Num 20:14). מָלַךְ is "reign" (20); the noun מֶלֶךְ is "king."

Expected: "over the children of Israel" (KJV) / "over the Israelites" (RSV)
Ruling 2
The preposition is לְ, "for, to," as in "set for us a king" (1 Sam 8:5, שִׂימָה־לָּנוּ מֶלֶךְ). "Over" is עַל: "will you indeed reign over us?" (37:8, עָלֵינוּ). The king reigns for the people, on their behalf and at their asking; "for" keeps the two prepositions apart.

Ruling 74
The kings of Edom follow no dynasty: no son succeeds his father, and almost every king comes from a different city. "Bela son of Beor" is close to "Balaam son of Beor" (Num 22:5), and Targum Pseudo-Jonathan makes them one man, Balaam the wicked. Dinhabah is unknown.

The appendix to Job in the LXX (Job 42:17b–e) identifies Job with this king: Job "was formerly named Jobab," the son of Zare (Zerah) of the sons of Esau, his mother Bosorra (Bozrah), and he reigned in Edom after Balak son of Beor. Eliphaz the Temanite (v. 11; Job 2:11) and the land of Uz (v. 28; Job 1:1) belong to the same world. Bozrah is Edom's fortress city (Isa 34:6; 63:1; Amos 1:12). Zerah is also a son of Reuel (vv. 13, 17).

Expected: "Hadad" (KJV, RSV)
הֲדַד is a different name from חֲדַד, Ishmael's son (25:15), which was printed "Hadad" first in canonical order. Under ruling 110 the second takes a distinguishing spelling: the breve marks the hateph-patah of הֲ, and the names table gives both. It is the name of the storm god of Syria (Ben-hadad, 1 Kgs 15:18), and of the Edomite prince who fled to Egypt and came back to trouble Solomon (1 Kgs 11:14–22). 1 Chr 1:46–51 spells this king and Hadar (v. 39) alike as הֲדַד. "Struck Midian in the field of Moab": a war among Abraham's other sons (25:2), before Israel came near.

Ruling 18
שָׁאוּל is the name of Israel's first king, and of a son of Simeon (46:10), printed in its familiar form, "Saul" (the RSV has "Shaul"). In a list of the kings who reigned "before a king reigned for the sons of Israel" (v. 31), Edom has a Saul.

Expected: "Rehoboth by the river" (KJV) / "Rehoboth on the Euphrates" (RSV)
הַנָּהָר with the article is "the River," the Euphrates, at 15:18 and 31:21, and the RSV and Onkelos read it so here. A king of Edom from the Euphrates is far from Edom, and a Rehoboth on a nearer river (the Wadi Zered, or a stream in Edom) has also been suggested. The lowercase "river" keeps both; Rehoboth-ir of 10:11 is another city.

Hadar alone of the kings has no death notice and has a named woman; the list may end in the writer's own day. 1 Chr 1:50–51 calls him Hadad, spells his city Pai, and adds "and Hadad died." מְהֵיטַבְאֵל "Mehetabel" is "El does good," and מֵי זָהָב "Mezahab" is "waters of gold." "Daughter of Mezahab" is either a grandfather or a place, as "daughter of Zibeon" at v. 2; the Targums make Matred a man who toiled at the refining of gold.

A second list of Edom's chiefs, now "by their places": several names are of persons above (Timna, v. 12; Oholibamah, v. 2; Kenaz and Teman, v. 11), and here name clans and districts. Timna and Oholibamah are women's names given to chiefdoms. Elah is the word "terebinth" (35:4).

Ruling 2
"He is Esau, the father of Edom" closes the chapter on the words of its headings (vv. 1, 9), and leads into the producings of Jacob, which begin with Joseph (37:1–2). מוֹשָׁב "seat" (where one sits and dwells) and אֲחֻזָּה "tenure" (land held) keep their home glosses; the WPRB has "settlements" and "the land they held."

θυγατέρα Ἀνὰ τοῦ υἱοῦ Σεβεγών, "daughter of Anah, the son of Zibeon," where the Masoretic version reads "daughter of Anah, daughter of Zibeon" (בַּת צִבְעוֹן): the Greek reads בֶּן, as the Samaritan Pentateuch also does, so that Anah, not Oholibamah, is Zibeon's child, as 36:24 has it ("the sons of Zibeon: Aiah and Anah"); marked, and again at 36:14. The wives come "from the daughters of the Canaanites," the people, where the Masoretic version reads "the daughters of Canaan." Swete prints Ἐλώμ for Elon and, here and at 36:5, 18, 25, Ὀλιβεμά for Oholibamah, from Alexandrinus, where Rahlfs spells both otherwise; each is a spelling of the same name and keeps its familiar form (names table).

πάντα τὰ σώματα τοῦ οἴκου αὐτοῦ, "all the bodies of his house," where the Masoretic version reads "all the souls of his house" (נַפְשׁוֹת): σῶμα is the Greek's word for the persons of a household counted as property, the slaves (Rev 18:13 "bodies, and souls of humans"); marked. The goods follow in the Greek's own order and words: "all the belongings and the cattle" for "his livestock and all his beasts" (marked, as at 36:7), and "all as many as he acquired" for "all his getting that he had gained." The second clause, "and as many as he secured" (καὶ ὅσα περιεποιήσατο), doubles the first with a verb of its own and is marked as a plus. The Masoretic version has Esau go "to a land," with no name; the Greek has him go "out of the land of Canaan" (Χανάαν seeded), so that the verse says what he left, not where he went.

Expected: "bear" (KJV, RSV, NETS)
Ruling 2
φέρειν αὐτούς, of the land that could not hold the two households. φέρω keeps its home gloss "bring," and "bear" is τίκτω's; but "the land was not able to bring them" says nothing in English, and "carry" is the verb's own sense of holding up a load (Luke 23:26 "to carry it behind Jesus"). The land "of their sojourning" is singular (παροικήσεως), where the Masoretic version reads "sojournings"; marked. At the end the Greek has "from the multitude of their belongings" for "from the face of their livestock."

Θαιμάν prints "Teman" here, Esau's grandson (תֵּימָן), by its referent, as at 36:15, 42; the same Greek is Ishmael's son Tema at 25:15 (148g). Ὠμάν is Swete's spelling of Omar (אוֹמָר), from Alexandrinus, where Rahlfs and 36:15 have Ὠμάρ; it keeps the familiar form, and at 36:23 the same Greek form stands for Onam. Σωφάρ, the form the Greek gives Job's friend Zophar (Job 2:11), here spells the Masoretic version's Zepho (צְפוֹ) and keeps its familiar form, here and at 36:15 (145f).

Θαμνά prints by its referent (149a): "Timna" for Eliphaz's concubine, Lotan's sister and the governor of 36:40, where the Masoretic version reads תִּמְנָע; "Timnah" for the town of Gen 38, where it reads תִּמְנָה. One Greek form, two Hebrew names.

Νάχομ for Nahath (36:17 Νάχοθ) and Μασεμμάθ for Basemath (36:3 Βασεμμάθ), here and at 36:17, are Swete's forms from Alexandrinus, where Rahlfs spells otherwise; each is a copyist's form of the same name and keeps its familiar English, unmarked (145f; names table). The Greek has no "and" before Zerah.

Swete prints υἱοῦ Ἠσαύ, "of the son of Esau," singular, from Alexandrinus, where Rahlfs and the Masoretic version have the plural, "of the sons of Esau"; marked. ἡγεμών, "governor," stands for the Masoretic version's אַלּוּף "chief" in every line of the lists (36:15–43): the word of the Roman governors of the New Testament (Matt 27:2; Acts 23:24) and of Matt 2:6, "by no means least among the governors of Judah" (151e).

ἐν γῇ Ἰδουμαίᾳ, "in the land of Idumea," where the Masoretic version reads "in the land of Edom." Ἰδουμαία is the Greek's name for the country, built from the name of its people, the form of Mark 3:8; elsewhere in this chapter Swete keeps Ἐδώμ (36:1, 8, 9, 17, 19, 21, 30–32, 43). It is not a spelling of אֱדוֹם but a different name for the same land, as the Assyrians for Assyria (145f); printed as it sounds and marked.

Swete's list runs Nahath, Zerah, Mizzah, Shammah, where the Masoretic version and 36:13 have Shammah before Mizzah; the alignment cannot pair ἡγεμὼν Σομέ because Rahlfs orders the names otherwise. Marked as a difference of order.
- Reading↩ Back to the text
Ἰεούλ is Swete's form of Jeush (Ἰεούς, 36:5), a copyist's confusion of sigma and lambda, from Alexandrinus; it keeps the familiar form, unmarked (145f). The Greek closes the verse with "the leaders of Oholibamah" and lacks the Masoretic version's "daughter of Anah, the woman of Esau" (seeded).
- Reading↩ Back to the text
The Masoretic version reads "These are the sons of Esau, and these their chiefs; he is Edom." Swete repeats the clause and makes the last words a genealogy: οὗτοί εἰσιν οἱ ἡγεμόνες αὐτῶν, υἱοὶ Ἐδώμ, "these are their leaders, sons of Edom." The alignment seeds οὗτοί εἰσιν and υἱοί as pluses and leaves οἱ ἡγεμόνες αὐτῶν unpaired, since Rahlfs reads otherwise; the repeated words are as much an addition as the words either side of them, and all three are marked. The Greek lacks "he" (seeded).

Expected: "Ezer" (KJV, RSV)
Σάαρ is the form the lexicon holds for Zohar, the father of Ephron (23:8). Here it stands for the Masoretic version's Ezer (אֵצֶר), a son of Seir, and prints by its referent, unmarked (151a, as 149a for Βάλλα): a confusion of letters in the Greek, not another man (145f). Again at 36:27, 30. Ῥεισών, Swete's form for Dishan (דִּישָׁן), with rho for the Hebrew daleth, keeps its familiar form (names table). The Horite is "the son of Seir," singular, where the Masoretic version reads "the sons of Seir"; marked.

Ὠμάν, which spelled Omar at 36:11, here spells the Masoretic version's Onam (אוֹנָם), Shobal's son; it prints by its referent (149a). Γωλών for Alvan and Γαιβήλ for Ebal write the ʿayin with gamma, as Γάδερ for Eder (150h).

Ὠνάν and Ὠνᾶς are the Greek's forms of Anah (עֲנָה), and print the familiar name. οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ Ὠνᾶς ὃς εὗρεν τὸν Ἰαμείν, "this is the Anah who found Iamin": the Greek transliterates the Masoretic version's obscure הַיֵּמִם, which that version prints "the yemim" (133d; the Vulgate guessed "hot springs," others "mules"), and gives it the article of a personal name, so that Anah finds a man or a place called Iamin. Printed as it sounds and marked as a name. For "the donkeys" (חֲמֹרִים) it has τὰ ὑποζύγια, "the yoke-animals," the beasts that go under the yoke, its regular word for the ass (Exod 23:4–5; Matt 21:5); νέμω, "pasture," for "shepherding."

Δησών, "Dishon," where the Masoretic version reads "Dishan" (דִּישָׁן): the Greek gives these four sons to Dishon, the brother of Dishan, and keeps Dishan's sons for Ῥεισών at 36:28. A different man is named; marked.
- Decision↩ Back to the text
Expected: "Cheran" (KJV, RSV)
Χαρράν is the form the lexicon holds for the city Harran (11:31; Acts 7:2, 4). Here it spells the Masoretic version's Cheran (כְּרָן), a son of the Horite, and prints by its referent, unmarked (151a): the Greek writes the man's name in the letters of the city's, with chi for kaph (145f).
- Decision↩ Back to the text
Expected: "Aran" (KJV, RSV)
Ἀράμ is the form the lexicon holds for Aram, Shem's son (10:22). Here it spells the Masoretic version's Aran (אֲרָן), and prints by its referent, unmarked (151a); nu and mu trade at the end of Greek forms of Hebrew names (Καϊνάν, Καϊνάμ: 145f).
- Reading↩ Back to the text
Χορρεί, here and at 36:30, transliterates the Masoretic version's הַחֹרִי, "the Horite," where 36:20–21 translate it with the people's name Χορραῖος. The form is the one that spells Lotan's son Hori at 36:22, and it prints by its referent: "the Horite" here, where it stands for the people (145f, 149a).

ἐν γῇ Ἐδώμ, "in the land of Edom," where the Masoretic version reads "in the land of Seir": the Greek closes the Horite list with the name that closes the lists of Esau's sons (36:16–17, 21), a different name for the land, marked. ἐν ταῖς ἡγεμονίαις αὐτῶν, "in their governorships," stands for the Masoretic version's "by their chiefs" (לְאַלֻּפֵיהֶם).

πρὸ τοῦ βασιλεῦσαι βασιλέα ἐν Ἰερουσαλήμ, "before a king reigned in Jerusalem," where the Masoretic version reads "before a king reigned for the sons of Israel." Swete prints Jerusalem from Alexandrinus, where Rahlfs has ἐν Ἰσραήλ, "in Israel"; the reading names the city of David's line where the Masoretic version names the people, and dates the list from the kingdom in Jerusalem. A different name, marked; the Greek lacks "for the sons of" (seeded) and "the land of" before Edom (seeded).

Βάλακ, "Balak," where the Masoretic version reads "Bela" (בֶּלַע): the Greek gives the first king of Edom the name of Balak the king of Moab (Num 22–24; Rev 2:14), as it gives it to the city Bela at 14:2, 8. A different name, printed as it sounds and marked (145f), here and at 36:33. Δεννάβα is a spelling of Dinhabah (names table).

Ἰωβάδ is Swete's form of Jobab here, from Alexandrinus, where Rahlfs and 36:34 have Ἰωβάβ; it keeps the familiar form. The Greek Job closes with a note naming Job as this Jobab, son of Zare, who reigned in Edom after Balak son of Beor (Job 42:17b–d LXX). Ζάρα is the same name as Ζάρε, Reuel's son (36:13, 17): both print "Zerah."

Expected: "Bedad" (KJV, RSV)
Βαράδ is the form the lexicon holds for the place Bered (16:14). Here it spells the Masoretic version's Bedad (בְּדַד), the father of Hădad, with rho for daleth, and prints by its referent, unmarked (151a, 145f). Hădad keeps the Masoretic version's spelling of the name (133). ἐκκόψας, "who cut off," stands for "who struck" (הַמַּכֶּה), a stronger verb than the Greek's plain πατάσσω; marked.

καὶ ὄνομα τῇ πόλει αὐτοῦ Γεθθάιμ, "and the name of his city was Gittaim," where the Masoretic version reads "Avith" (עֲוִית). Γεθθάιμ is the Greek's form of גִּתַּיִם, Gittaim, the town of 2 Sam 4:3 and Neh 11:33, not a spelling of Avith: a different name, printed with the English form of the name the Greek gives and marked (145f).

Rulings 18, 53, 54, 141, 143, 145
Swete gives the last king a father: Ἁρὰθ υἱὸς Βαράθ, "Hadar son of Barath." The alignment seeds υἱός as a plus and leaves Βαράθ unpaired (Rahlfs reads otherwise); the patronym is set as one plus. Ἁράθ is the Greek's form of Hadar (הֲדַר) and keeps the familiar form. The city is Φόγωρ, "Peor," where the Masoretic version reads "Pau" (פָּעוּ): Φογώρ is the Greek's name for Peor (Num 23:28), a different name, marked. Mehetabel is "daughter of Matred, son of Mezahab," where the Masoretic version reads "daughter of Mezahab"; marked. Μετεβεήλ, Ματραείθ and Μεζοόβ are spellings of the three names (names table).

Ἰεβέρ, "Jeber," where the Masoretic version reads "Jetheth" (יְתֵת): Swete's name is not a spelling of Jetheth but a different name, printed as it sounds and marked (151a). At 36:41 Φινές is the Greek's form of Pinon (פִּינֹן), the same name, and keeps the familiar form, unmarked (151a).

Where the Masoretic version names the last chief Iram (עִירָם), Swete names Ζαφωεί, "Zaphoi," a name with no Hebrew counterpart (Rahlfs ζαφωιμ). The alignment seeds Iram as a minus and the Greek name as an unplaced plus; but the Greek has a governor in Iram's place, and the name is a different name in the same slot, printed as it sounds and marked {name} (145f), as Balak for Bela (36:32). The minus is refused and nothing is set as a plus. Μετοδιήλ is Swete's form of Magdiel. The governors of Edom are "in the ones built up," ἐν ταῖς κατῳκοδομημέναις, the settled towns, where the Masoretic version reads "by their seats"; κατοικοδομέω is "build up," a compound of οἰκοδομέω "build."
