2 And Jacob saw the face of Laban, and look, he was not with him as yesterday, the day before2.
2 And Jacob saw the face of Laban, and look, he was not with him as yesterday and the third day1.
2 Jacob saw Laban's face, and look, he was not with him as he had been before.

3 And Adonai said to Jacob, "Return to the land of your fathers and to your birth, and I will be with you."
3 Now the Lord said to Jacob, "Turn back to the land of your father and to your generation, and I will be with you."
3 Then the LORD said to Jacob, "Go back to the land of your fathers, to the kin and country of your birth, and I will be with you."

4 And Jacob sent and called to Rachel and to Leah, to the field, to his flock.
4 Now, having sent, Jacob called Rachel and Leah into the plain where the flocks were,
4 So Jacob sent for Rachel and Leah and called them out to the field, to his flock.

5 And he said to them, "I am seeing the face of your father, that he is not toward me as yesterday, the day before2; and the Elohim of my father has been with me.
5 and he said to them, "I see the face of your father, that he is not with me as yesterday and the third day; but the God of my father was with me;
5 He said to them, "I can see from your father's face that he is not toward me as he was before. But the God of my father has been with me.

6 And you, you know that with all my power I have served your father.
6 and you yourselves, now, know that with all my strength I have been slave to your father.
6 You know that I have served your father with all my strength.

7 And your father has tricked me and changed my wages ten counts3; and Elohim did not give him to do bad with me.
7 But your father has cheated me, and changed my wage of the ten lambs2; and God did not give him to do bad to me.
7 Yet your father has tricked me and changed my wages ten times. But God did not let him do me harm.

8 If he said so, 'Speckled ones shall be your wage,' and all the flock bore speckled ones; and if he said so, 'Striped ones shall be your wage,' and all the flock bore striped ones4.
8 If he says thus, 'The many-colored ones shall be your wage,' and all the sheep shall bear many-colored ones; but if he says‸, 'The white ones shall be your wage,' and all the sheep shall bear white ones.
8 If he said, 'The speckled ones will be your wages,' then all the flock gave birth to speckled young. And if he said, 'The striped ones will be your wages,' then all the flock gave birth to striped young.

9 And Elohim snatched the livestock of your father and gave it to me.
9 And God took away all3 the cattle of your father and gave them to me.
9 So God has snatched your father's livestock away and given it to me.

10 And it was, at the time the flock was in heat, and I lifted my eyes and saw in a dream, and look, the he-goats5 going up on the flock were striped, speckled and dappled.
10 And it came to be, at the time when the sheep were in heat,‸ and I saw with the eyes in the sleep, and look, the he-goats and the rams were going up on the sheep and the goats, white-flecked and many-colored and ash-gray sprinkled4.
10 Once, at the time when the flock was in heat, I looked up and saw a dream. In it the male goats mating with the flock were striped, speckled and spotted.

11 And the messenger of the Elohim6 said to me in the dream, 'Jacob!' And I said, 'Here I am7.'
11 And the messenger of God said to me in sleep, 'Jacob, Jacob!'5 Now I said, 'What is it?'
11 The messenger of God said to me in the dream, 'Jacob!' I answered, 'Here I am.'

12 And he said, 'Lift, please, your eyes and see: all the he-goats going up on the flock are striped, speckled and dappled; for I have seen all that Laban is doing to you8.
12 And he said, 'Look up‸ with your eyes, and see‸ the he-goats and the rams going up on the sheep and the goats, white-flecked and many-colored and ash-gray sprinkled; for I have seen as many things as Laban is doing to you.6

14 And Rachel and Leah answered and said to him, "Is there still for us a portion and an inheritance in the house of our father?
14 And answering, Rachel and Leah said to him, "Is there still9 for us a portion or an inheritance in the house of our father?
14 Rachel and Leah answered him, "Do we still have any share or inheritance in our father's house?

17 And Jacob rose and lifted his sons and his women onto the camels.
17 Now, having risen, Jacob took the women and his little children onto the camels;
17 Then Jacob got up and put his sons and his wives on the camels.

18 And he drove all his livestock and all his gains that he had gained, the livestock of his getting that he had gained in Paddan-aram, to come to Isaac his father, to the land of Canaan.
18 and he led away all his belongings and all his baggage‸, which he had secured in Mesopotamia11, and all that was his, to go away to Isaac his father, into the land of Canaan.
18 He drove off all his livestock and all the goods he had gained, the livestock he had gotten in Paddan-aram, to go to his father Isaac in the land of Canaan.

19 And Laban had gone to shear his flock, and Rachel stole the teraphim11 that were her father's.
19 Now Laban had gone off to shear his sheep; now Rachel stole the idols12 that were her father's.
19 Laban had gone to shear his flock, and Rachel stole her father's household gods.

20 And Jacob stole the heart of Laban12 the Aramean, without telling him that he was bolting.
20 Now Jacob hid it from Laban the Syrian13, so as not to announce to him that he was running away;
20 And Jacob deceived Laban the Aramean by not telling him that he was running away.

21 And he bolted, he and all that was his; and he rose and passed over the River, and put his face toward the mountain of Gilead13.
21 and he ran away, he and all that was his; and‸ he crossed over the River, and rushed into the mountain of Gilead.
21 So he ran away with everything he had. He set out, crossed the Euphrates River, and headed for the hill country of Gilead.

22 And it was told to Laban on the third day that Jacob had bolted.
22 Now it was announced to Laban the Syrian on the third day that Jacob had run away;
22 On the third day Laban was told that Jacob had run away.

23 And he took his brothers with him and pursued behind him a way of seven days, and clung14 to him on the mountain of Gilead.
23 and having taken along all14 his brothers with himself, he pursued behind him a way of seven days, and overtook him on the mountain of Gilead.
23 He took his relatives with him and chased after him for seven days, and he caught up with him in the hill country of Gilead.

24 And Elohim came to Laban the Aramean in the dream of the night, and said to him, "Keep yourself, lest you speak with Jacob from good to bad15."
24 Now God came to Laban the Syrian in sleep in the night, and said to him, "Guard yourself, lest15 you speak with Jacob‸ evil things."
24 But God came to Laban the Aramean in a dream at night and said to him, "Watch yourself, so that you do not speak with Jacob from good to bad."

25 And Laban overtook Jacob. And Jacob had pitched his tent on the mountain, and Laban pitched with his brothers on the mountain of Gilead.
25 Laban caught up with Jacob. Jacob had pitched his tent in the hill country, and Laban pitched camp with his relatives in the hill country of Gilead.

26 And Laban said to Jacob, "What have you done? And you stole my heart12, and drove off my daughters like captives of the sword.
26 Now Laban said to Jacob, "What have you done? Why did you run away secretly,16 and rob me, and lead away my daughters as captive women by the sword?
26 Laban said to Jacob, "What have you done? You deceived me and carried off my daughters like prisoners taken in war.

27 Why did you take cover to bolt, and steal me, and did not tell me? And I would have sent you away with gladness and with songs, with drum and with lyre.
27 ‸And if you had announced to me17, I would have sent you out with gladness and with music, drums and lyre.
27 Why did you run away in secret and deceive me, and not tell me? I would have sent you off with gladness and songs, with drums and lyres.

28 And you did not leave me to kiss my sons and my daughters. Now you have played the fool in doing it.
28 You did not even let me kiss my sons and my daughters. Now you have acted foolishly.

29 There is might16 in my hand to do bad with you; and the Elohim of your father last night said to me, saying, 'Keep yourself from speaking with Jacob from good to bad15.'
29 And now my hand has strength to do bad to you; but the God of your father yesterday said to me, saying, 'Guard yourself, lest you speak15 with Jacob‸ evil things.'
29 I have the power to do you harm. But last night the God of your father said to me, 'Watch yourself, so that you do not speak with Jacob from good to bad.'

30 And now, going you have gone, for yearning you have yearned17 for the house of your father. Why did you steal my elohim18?"
30 Now therefore, you have gone; for with desire you desired to go away18 into the house of your father. And why did you steal my gods?"
30 Now, you have gone away, because you longed so much for your father's house. But why did you steal my elohim?"

31 And Jacob answered and said to Laban, "Because I feared; for I said, 'Lest you seize your daughters from me.'
31 Now, answering, Jacob said to Laban,‸ "For I said, 'Lest15 you take away your daughters from me and all that is mine.'"
31 Jacob answered Laban, "Because I was afraid. For I said to myself, 'You may take your daughters away from me by force.'

32 With whomever you find your elohim18, he shall not live. In front of our brothers, recognize for yourself what is with me, and take it for yourself." And Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen them.
32 And Jacob said to him, "With whomever you find your gods, he shall not live in front of our brothers. Recognize what of yours is with me, and take it‸." And he recognized nothing with him.19 But Jacob did not know that Rachel his woman had stolen them.
32 Anyone you find your elohim with will not live. In front of our relatives, see for yourself what of yours is with me, and take it." Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen them.

33 And Laban came into the tent of Jacob and into the tent of Leah and into the tent of the two slave-women, and did not find. And he went out from the tent of Leah and came into the tent of Rachel.
33 Now, having entered, Laban searched in the house of Leah, and did not find; and having gone out from the house of Leah, he searched in the house of Jacob and in the house of the two servant-girls, and did not find; now he entered also into the house of Rachel.
33 So Laban went into Jacob's tent, into Leah's tent, and into the tent of the two slave women, but he did not find them. Then he left Leah's tent and went into Rachel's tent.

34 And Rachel had taken the teraphim and put them in the litter of the camel, and sat on them. And Laban felt all the tent, and did not find.
34 Now Rachel had taken the idols12 and cast them into the packsaddles of the camel, and sat upon them,‸
34 Now Rachel had taken the household gods, put them in the camel's saddle, and sat on them. Laban felt his way through the whole tent but did not find them.

35 And she said to her father, "Let it not flare in the eyes of my lord that I am not able to rise from before your face, for the way of women is to me19." And he searched, and did not find the teraphim.
35 and she said to her father, "Do not bear it heavily20, lord;‸ I am not able to rise before you, for what is after the habit of women is to me." But he searched, Laban, in the whole house, and did not find the idols.
35 She said to her father, "Do not be angry, my lord, that I cannot stand up in front of you, for I am having my period." So he searched, but he did not find the household gods.

36 And it flared for Jacob, and he quarreled with Laban. And Jacob answered and said to Laban, "What is my revolt? What is my sin, that you have chased hotly behind me?
36 Now Jacob was angry, and fought with Laban; now, answering, Jacob said to Laban, "What is my wrongdoing, and what is my sin, that you have hunted down behind me?
36 Then Jacob was angry and quarreled with Laban. Jacob said to Laban, "What is my revolt? What is my sin, that you have chased after me so hotly?

36 ὠργίσθη δὲ Ἰακὼβ καὶ ἐμαχέσατο τῷ Λαβάν· ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ Ἰακὼβ εἶπεν τῷ Λαβάν Τί τὸ ἀδίκημά μου καὶ τί τὸ ἁμάρτημά μου, ὅτι κατεδίωξας ὀπίσω μου;

37 For you have felt all my articles: what have you found of all the articles of your house? Put it here20, in front of my brothers and your brothers, and let them set right between the two of us.
37 And since you have searched all the vessels of my house21, what have you found of all the vessels of your house? Set it here, in front of your brothers and my brothers, and let them reprove between the two of us.
37 For you have felt through all my things. What have you found of all the things of your house? Put it here in front of my relatives and your relatives, and let them decide between the two of us.

38 These twenty years I have been with you: your ewes21 and your goats have not been bereaved, and the rams of your flock I have not eaten.
38 These for me twenty years I have been with you: your sheep and your goats were not made childless, and the rams of your sheep I have not devoured.
38 For these 20 years I have been with you. Your ewes and your goats have not lost their young, and I have not eaten the rams of your flock.

39 The torn beast I did not bring to you; I, I would count it my sin22; from my hand you would seek it, stolen by day and stolen by night.
39 What was caught by beasts I have not brought up to you; I, I would repay from myself22‸, thefts by day and thefts by night.
39 I did not bring you any animal torn by wild beasts; I bore the loss myself. You demanded it from my hand, whether it was stolen by day or stolen by night.

40 I was: by day drought ate me, and frost by night, and my sleep flitted from my eyes.
40 I came to be: by day scorched by the burning heat, and by frost by night, and my sleep withdrew from my eyes.
40 This is how I was: by day the heat consumed me, and the frost by night, and sleep fled from my eyes.

41 This is for me twenty years in your house: I served you fourteen years for your two daughters, and six years for your flock, and you changed my wages ten counts3.
41 These for me twenty years I have been in your house: I was slave to you ten and four years for your two daughters, and six years for your sheep, and you falsely reckoned23 my wage with ten ewe-lambs2.
41 These 20 years I have been in your house. I served you 14 years for your two daughters and 6 years for your flock, and you changed my wages ten times.

42 Had not the Elohim of my father, the Elohim of Abraham and the Terror23 of Isaac, been for me, surely now you would have sent me away empty. My affliction and the toil of my palms Elohim has seen, and he set right24 last night."
42 Had not the God of my father‸ Abraham and the Fear of Isaac24 been for me, now you would have sent me out empty. My humiliation and the toil of my hands God has seen, and he reproved you yesterday."
42 If the God of my father, the God of Abraham and the Fear of Isaac, had not been on my side, you would surely have sent me away empty by now. But God has seen my affliction and the toil of my hands, and last night he gave his judgment."

43 And Laban answered and said to Jacob, "The daughters are my daughters, and the sons my sons, and the flock my flock, and all that you are seeing, it is mine. And to my daughters, what shall I do to these this day, or to their sons whom they have borne?
43 Now, answering, Laban said to Jacob, "Your daughters are my daughters, and your sons my sons, and your cattle my cattle, and all, as many as you see, are mine. And to my daughters, what shall I do to these today, or to their children whom they have borne?
43 Laban answered Jacob, "The daughters are my daughters, the sons are my sons, and the flock is my flock. Everything you see is mine. But what can I do today to these daughters of mine, or to the sons they have borne?

43 ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ Λαβὰν εἶπεν τῷ Ἰακώβ Αἱ θυγατέρες σου θυγατέρες μου, καὶ οἱ υἱοί σου υἱοί μου, καὶ τὰ κτήνη σου κτήνη μου, καὶ πάντα ὅσα σὺ ὁρᾷς ἐμά ἐστιν· καὶ ταῖς θυγατράσιν μου τί ποιήσω ταύταις σήμερον ἢ τοῖς τέκνοις αὐτῶν οἷς ἔτεκον;

44 And now, go25, let us cut a covenant, I and you, and it shall be for a witness between me and between you."
44 Now therefore, come, let us dispose a covenant, I and you, and it shall be for a testimony between me and you." Now Jacob said to him, "Look, no one is with us; see, God is witness between me and you."25
44 So now, come, let us make a covenant, you and I, and it will be a witness between you and me."

45 So Jacob took a stone and set it up as a standing stone.

46 And Jacob said to his brothers, "Glean stones!" And they took stones and made a heap, and they ate there on the heap.
46 Now Jacob said to his brothers, "Collect stones!" And they collected stones, and made a hill26, and they ate and drank there on the hill. And Laban said to him, "This hill bears witness between me and you today."27
46 Jacob said to his relatives, "Gather stones!" So they took stones and made a heap, and they ate there on the heap.

47 Laban called it Jegar-sahadutha, and Jacob called it Galeed.

48 And Laban said, "This heap is witness between me and between you this day." Therefore he called its name Galeed27,
48 Now Laban said to Jacob, "Look, this hill and this pillar, which I have made stand between me and you: this hill bears witness‸, and this pillar bears witness."29 Therefore its name was called Hill Bears Witness,
48 Laban said, "This heap is a witness between you and me today." That is why he named it Galeed,

49 and the Mizpah28, in that he said, "May Adonai watch between me and between you, for we shall be hidden, a man from his fellow.
49 and the Sight30, which he said: "May God look on between me and you, for we shall withdraw, the one from the other31.
49 and also Mizpah, because he said, "May the LORD watch between you and me, for we will be out of each other's sight.

50 If you afflict my daughters, and if you take women besides my daughters—there is no man with us—see, Elohim29 is witness between me and between you."
50 If you humble my daughters, if you take women besides my daughters, see, no one is with us‸.3233
50 If you mistreat my daughters, and if you take other wives besides my daughters, though no one is with us, see, God is a witness between you and me."

51 And Laban said to Jacob, "Look, this heap, and look, the standing stone that I have cast30 between me and between you.
51 Laban said to Jacob, "Look at this heap, and look at the standing stone that I have set up between you and me.

52 Witness is this heap, and witness is the standing stone, that31 I, I will not pass over to you this heap, and that you, you will not pass over to me this heap and this standing stone, for bad.
52 ‸For if I do not cross over to you‸, nor you cross over to me this hill and this pillar, for badness34.
52 This heap is a witness, and the standing stone is a witness. They witness that I will not cross over this heap to you to do harm, and that you will not cross over this heap and this standing stone to me to do harm.

53 May the elohim of Abraham and the elohim of Nahor judge32 between us, the elohim of their father." And Jacob swore by the Terror23 of his father Isaac.
53 The God of Abraham and the God of Nahor shall judge35 between us‸."
53 May the elohim of Abraham and the elohim of Nahor judge between us, the elohim of their father." Then Jacob swore by the Fear of his father Isaac.

54 And Jacob sacrificed a sacrifice33 on the mountain, and called to his brothers to eat bread; and they ate bread, and lodged on the mountain.
54 = Masoretic 31:53–54 And Jacob swore by the Fear of his father Isaac. And Jacob sacrificed a sacrifice on the mountain, and called his brothers‸; and they ate‸ and drank, and fell asleep on the mountain.
54 Jacob offered a sacrifice on the mountain and called his relatives to eat a meal. They ate the meal and spent the night on the mountain.

55 = Masoretic 32:1 Now, having risen in the morning, Laban kissed warmly his sons and his daughters, and blessed them; and having turned back, Laban went away to his place.36

  1. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "glory" (KJV) / "wealth" (RSV)

    Rulings 2, 39

כָּבוֹד is from כָּבֵד "be heavy" (H3513): weight, then the substance that gives a man weight, then honour and glory. Here it is livestock and goods, as in Ps 49:17, "when the glory of his house grows great," and Isa 10:3, "where will you leave your glory?"; "the glory of the nations" in Isa 61:6 is their wealth. The same word is the glory of Adonai (Exod 16:7; 33:18; 40:34), so one English word serves both, and the reader hears Laban's sons call Jacob's flocks his "glory." "Weight" belongs to מִשְׁקָל. The sons say "our father" twice; Jacob's answer (v. 9) and the daughters' (v. 16) name Elohim as the one who took it from him.

  2. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 2, 8

כִּתְמוֹל שִׁלְשֹׁם, "as yesterday, the third day," is the idiom for "as before" (Exod 5:7–8, 14; 1 Sam 19:7; 2 Kgs 13:5); both its words are printed. אֵינֶנּוּ, "he is not," is singular and masculine. "Face" (פָּנִים) is plural in Hebrew and takes a plural verb ("my face will go," פָּנַי יֵלֵכוּ, Exod 33:14), so the subject is Laban himself, seen in his face, and the English "he" follows the grammar (8). Verse 5 repeats the idiom with "toward me" (אֵלַי) where v. 2 has "with him" (עִמּוֹ), and the two are kept apart.

  3. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 2, 95

מֹנִים "counts" is from מָנָה "count" (H4487): the changes were counted, and v. 41 repeats the charge in the same words. "Ten" may be a round number for "again and again" (Num 14:22; Job 19:3). "Elohim did not give him" is the idiom of permission with נָתַן, as at 20:6, "I did not give you to touch her"; "give" is held (2).

  4. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 2, 37

Laban's terms are those of 30:32–39, and the glosses fixed there hold through Jacob's account and his dream (vv. 8, 10, 12): "speckled," "striped," "be in heat." Jacob tells of two bargains, one for each mark, each answered by the flock: Laban changed the term, and the flock changed with it. The yiqtol יֹאמַר is a repeated past, "if he said."

  5. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "rams" (KJV) / "he-goats" (RSV)

    Rulings 2, 39

עַתּוּד is the male goat: the offerings of the tribes' chiefs (Num 7:17–88), "rams… and he-goats" (Deut 32:14; Ps 50:9, 13), the goats that go out ahead of the flock (Jer 50:8), and so a name for leaders (Isa 14:9). "Ram" is אַיִל's (v. 38) and "goat" is עֵז's (v. 38), so "he-goat" names the male goat apart from both (129), as תַּיִשׁ is "buck" (30:35). "Going up on" the flock is mounting it. בָּרֹד "dappled" is spotted as with hail (בָּרָד), the colour of the horses of Zech 6:3, 6. In Jacob's telling it stands where 30:32–39 had טָלוּא "patched."

Expected: "the angel of God" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 9, 107, 128

הָאֱלֹהִים has no agreeing verb in its clause, but the speaker names himself in v. 13, "I am the El of Bethel," so the capital is printed by reference (107; 128d), as at 28:12. "Messenger" is the core gloss (62).

Expected: "Here am I" (KJV) / "Here I am" (RSV)

הִנֵּנִי, as at 22:1, 7, 11 and 27:1, 18: הִנֵּה with the suffix "me," "look—me." The home gloss "look" (88) cannot take an object pronoun in English, so the particle and its suffix are printed together as "Here I am," and the phrase is held whole.

    Ruling 74

Jacob's account credits a dream and Elohim (vv. 9, 12) with what 30:37–43 tells as his own work with peeled rods at the troughs. The narrator gives no dream in Gen 30, and Jacob mentions no rods here. Neither account corrects the other.

    Rulings 9, 18, 68

הָאֵל בֵּית־אֵל puts the article on a word bound to a name, an unusual construct: "the El, Bethel," or "the El of Bethel." The LXX fills it out, "the God who appeared to you in the place of God," and Onkelos, "the God who revealed himself to you at Bethel"; both point back to 28:13–22, the stone and the vow. There Jacob poured oil on the stone (יָצַק, 28:18); here Elohim calls it anointing, מָשַׁח, the verb of מָשִׁיחַ "anointed" (68). "El" is printed under 9.

They were sold, and the price went to their father: Jacob paid for them with fourteen years of service (29:18–30), and none of it came to them. "He has eaten, eating it up too" keeps the infinitive absolute (6); "it up" is supplied. "Silver" is the metal as money (39). The root of כֶּסֶף "silver" is also Laban's "yearning" at v. 30 (כָּסַף).

  11. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "images" (KJV) / "household gods" (RSV)

    Rulings 5, 18, 46

תְּרָפִים, a plural that can stand for a single object, names figures kept in the house. Laban calls them "my elohim" (v. 30). Michal lays one in David's bed to pass for him (1 Sam 19:13, 16), so one could be the size of a man. Micah's shrine has them with the ephod (Judg 17:5; 18:14–20); they are consulted for oracles (Ezek 21:26; Zech 10:2; Hos 3:4) and condemned (1 Sam 15:23; 2 Kgs 23:24). The word is transliterated, as the KJV itself does at Judg 17:5 and Hos 3:4, because no English word holds image, household god and oracle together. The text does not give Rachel's motive. Rashi says she meant to wean her father from idolatry. The Nuzi tablets, which tie household gods to the inheritance of an estate, led E. A. Speiser to read a claim on Laban's property (compare v. 14, "is there still for us a portion and inheritance?"); Moshe Greenberg and others have disputed the parallel. Rachel's theft and Jacob's (v. 20) take one verb; see the note there. The WPRB has "household gods."

Expected: "Jacob stole away unawares to Laban" (KJV) / "Jacob outwitted Laban" (RSV)

    Rulings 2, 37

גָּנַב לֵב, "steal the heart," is to deceive, to take someone's mind unawares: Absalom "stole the heart of the men of Israel" (2 Sam 15:6). The verb is held as a chain (37). Rachel steals the teraphim (v. 19); Jacob steals Laban's heart (v. 20); Laban says "you stole my heart" and "you stole me" (vv. 26–27) and asks "why did you steal my elohim?" (v. 30); the narrator answers "Rachel had stolen them" (v. 32), and Jacob says "stolen by day and stolen by night" (v. 39). לֵב "heart" sounds in לָבָן "Laban." עַל בְּלִי הִגִּיד is "on the ground of not telling": בְּלִי negates a finite verb, which English "without" cannot take, so the verb becomes "telling" (10). In v. 26 Laban uses the longer form לֵבָב (88).

הַגִּלְעָד keeps the article, "the Gilead," a region rather than a town: the hill country east of the Jordan. The chapter explains the name by the heap of witness, גַּל עֵד (vv. 47–48), a popular etymology the Hebrew letters allow; English cannot carry it (17). The names table below has the forms.

    Expected: "overtook" (KJV, RSV)

    Ruling 2

The hiphil of דָּבַק in a pursuit is to catch up and stay on someone's heels: "they clung after them in the battle" (1 Sam 14:22; also 31:2; Judg 18:22; 20:42, 45). "Cling" is held. The overtaking proper is v. 25, נָשַׂג.

  15. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 103, 2

"From good to bad" is a range with מִן…עַד, so עַד is "to" (103). It is the merism of 24:50, "we cannot speak to you bad or good," and of 2 Sam 13:22, where Absalom "did not speak with Amnon from bad to good": nothing at all. Laban then speaks at length (vv. 26–30, 43–53). Rashi reads the warning as a ban on what is bad only: even the good of the wicked is bad for the just. Laban repeats the warning himself at v. 29.

  16. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "It is in the power of my hand" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 2, 9, 40

יֵשׁ לְאֵל יָדִי is an idiom: "when it is in the power of your hand to do it" (Prov 3:27); "there is no power in your hand" (Deut 28:32; Neh 5:5); "for it is in the power of their hand" (Mic 2:1). Strong's and OSHB file the noun with אֵל "El," and some read "my hand is my god" (compare Hab 1:11, "whose power is his god"). No attested reading makes a divine name of it here, so the expected sense is printed (40). "El" would create a false sense (guide §9), and "power" belongs to כֹּחַ (v. 6), so "might" is printed.

  17. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 6, 17

The infinitive absolute is kept twice: "going you have gone… yearning you have yearned" (6). The niphal of כָּסַף is to long, to pine: "my soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of Adonai" (Ps 84:3). The root is the root of כֶּסֶף "silver," perhaps the pale metal. Laban, whose daughters say he has eaten their silver (v. 15), now says that Jacob "yearned" for home; English has no pun (17).

  18. Decision↩ Back to the text

    Expected: "my gods" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 38, 123

אֱלֹהָי has no agreeing verb; it is a foreigner's word for the teraphim (v. 19), and Jacob takes it up at v. 32 as "your elohim," which the narrator follows with "had stolen them." Lowercase "elohim" under 38 (123c), in the WPB and the WPRB. The same word is "Elohim" in Jacob's mouth (vv. 5, 7, 9) and in Laban's own at v. 29, where it agrees in the singular: Laban names his household figures with the word for Jacob's Elohim.

"The way of women" is menstruation, as "the way of women" (אֹרַח כַּנָּשִׁים) had ceased for Sarah (18:11). By the later law whatever a menstruating woman sits on is unclean (Lev 15:20). Laban's elohim are under the camel litter of a woman who claims that state, and he does not touch it. Isaiah mocks gods that must be carried on beasts (Isa 46:1–2). "My lord" is a daughter's deferential address to her father, in the third person (22).

Expected: "Set it here" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 2, 130

A bare כֹּה of place is "here" (130), the place where the speaker stands: Jacob bids Laban set out whatever he has found where the kin of both men can see it. With עַד "as far as," כֹּה points away, "as far as yonder" (22:5; Num 23:15). The home gloss "so" belongs to כֹּה of manner (15:5).

רְחֵלֶיךָ "your ewes" is the word of Rachel's name, רָחֵל "Ewe" (Isa 53:7). Jacob, who does not know she has the teraphim (v. 32), names the ewes as he defends his keeping of the flock; English cannot carry the pun (17). The piel שִׁכֵּלוּ is to cast young, to miscarry (Exod 23:26; 2 Kgs 2:19, 21). The home gloss "be bereaved" is held: the ewes were not bereaved of their lambs.

Expected: "I bare the loss of it" (KJV) / "I bore the loss of it myself" (RSV)

    Rulings 2, 89

אֲחַטֶּנָּה is the piel of חָטָא with an object: "I made it a miss," I set the missing animal against myself. The qal is to miss a mark (Judg 20:16; Prov 19:2), and the piel elsewhere is to clear of sin (Lev 8:15; Ps 51:9). "Sin" is held (89), and "count it my" is supplied to carry the stem. By the later law a keeper does not repay what beasts have torn if he brings it as evidence (Exod 22:12); Jacob says he paid even for that. The passive participles גְּנֻבְתִי "stolen" keep an old ending in ־ִי.

Expected: "the fear of Isaac" (KJV) / "the Fear of Isaac" (RSV)

    Rulings 9, 18, 46

פַּחַד is sudden dread: "dread came on me, and trembling" (Job 4:14); "the dread of your heart" (Deut 28:67); "the terror of the night" (Ps 91:5). The פַּחַד of Adonai is the dread he casts on others (1 Sam 11:7; Isa 2:10, 19, 21; 2 Chr 17:10). Here it is a title, set in a list with "the Elohim of Abraham," so it takes a capital as a name (9, 18): the one Isaac dreads, or the one who strikes dread for him. Onkelos reads "the one whom Isaac feared." W. F. Albright read "the Kinsman of Isaac," from a word for kin in Aramaic and Arabic; D. R. Hillers argued against it, and the reading has not held. "Fear" is the gloss of יָרֵא and יִרְאָה, which stay apart from פַּחַד ("fearing Elohim," 22:12). Jacob swears by this name at v. 53. The WPRB has "Fear."

וַיּוֹכַח, "and he set right," is the verb of v. 37, where Jacob asks the kin of both men to "set right" between them. He reads Elohim's warning to Laban (vv. 24, 29) as a verdict already given. The KJV has "rebuked thee," the RSV "rendered judgment"; the hiphil keeps its home gloss (20).

יְגַר שָׂהֲדוּתָא is Aramaic, the first Aramaic in the Bible and the only Aramaic in the Torah. Laban the Aramean (vv. 20, 24) names the heap in his tongue, and Jacob names it in Hebrew, גַּלְעֵד; the two names stand side by side in one verse, one for each party to the covenant. They mean the same thing, "heap of witness": יְגַר is a cairn (Syriac yaggārā), and שָׂהֲדוּ is witness, the word Hebrew borrows at Job 16:19 ("my witness is on high," שָׂהֲדִי). The span is marked as Aramaic (30). Both are printed as names in their familiar forms (18), so the Aramaic takes no English used for Hebrew (29). Names table below.

Laban's sentence spells the name: "this heap (גַּל) is witness (עֵד)," therefore "Galeed" (גַּלְעֵד). The same letters make "Gilead" (גִּלְעָד), the region the heap stands in (vv. 21, 23, 25). English carries the pun with neither name; "Heap-of-Witness" would replace the name with a phrase, so the pun stays in this note.

הַמִּצְפָּה is "the watchpost," and Laban explains it by יִצֶף "may he watch" (צָפָה). The LXX reads the noun as ἡ ὅρασις, "the sight." Mizpah is also a town of Gilead later (Judg 10:17; 11:11, 29, 34). The words call on Adonai to watch over a partner who cannot be trusted out of sight (v. 50), not to bless two friends; later use has made them a parting blessing. The name is printed in its familiar form (18).

    Expected: "God" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 9, 38, 107, 128

אֱלֹהִים here has no agreeing verb (רְאֵה is said to Jacob), and a foreigner's bare אֱלֹהִים stays lowercase (38; 123c; v. 30). But in the verse before Laban has called on Adonai by name to watch between the two men, and "Elohim is witness" names the same watcher in the same scene, so the capital is printed by reference (128d). Laban's oath at v. 53, with a plural verb, prints lowercase.

יָרָה is to cast or throw: lots (Josh 18:6), arrows (1 Sam 20:36), "who cast its cornerstone?" (Job 38:6). Laban says "I have cast" of the standing stone Jacob set up (v. 45), and of the heap Jacob's kin gathered (v. 46).

Expected: "that I will not pass over this heap to thee" (KJV) / "that I will not pass over this heap to you" (RSV)

    Rulings 21, 35, 57

Each clause opens with אִם and has לֹא: literally "if I will not pass… and if you will not pass." In an oath a bare אִם denies and אִם לֹא affirms (21; 14:23; 21:23), and printed word for word the line would read in English as a condition with nothing to follow, or as its opposite. Here the heap and the stone witness an undertaking by each side not to cross, so "that" is printed, both negatives are kept, and the "if" goes to this note (57). "For bad" closes both clauses.

    Rulings 38, 46, 123

יִשְׁפְּטוּ is plural, and a plural verb outranks reference (123c), so all three are printed lowercase. The verse is a crux of one god or two: Laban, who has just called on Adonai (v. 49), sets the elohim of his grandfather Nahor beside Abraham's and has them judge together. The Samaritan Pentateuch and the LXX have a singular verb (κρινεῖ), and the LXX lacks "the elohim of their father." Rashi marks the second name as profane. Jacob answers by swearing by the Terror of Isaac alone, a name Laban does not use. The jussive is printed "May… judge."

The Greek names the coats with its own words, the four of 30:39: διάλευκοι "white-flecked" for the Masoretic version's "striped" (עֲקֻדִּים), ποικίλοι "many-colored" for "speckled" (נְקֻדִּים), and σποδοειδεῖς ῥαντοί, "ash-gray sprinkled," two words for "dappled" (בְּרֻדִּים); at 31:8 it has λευκά "white" for "striped." It adds the rams beside the he-goats and the goats beside the sheep (seeded), so that the dream covers both flocks; and Jacob sees "with the eyes in the sleep" where the Masoretic version reads "I lifted my eyes and saw in a dream" (the lack of "lifted" is seeded). The he-goats "were going up," a periphrastic imperfect, with the colours in apposition, where the Masoretic version makes the colours the predicate ("were striped").

Swete prints the name twice, Ἰακὼβ Ἰακώβ, "Jacob, Jacob," from Alexandrinus, where the alignment's Greek and the Masoretic version have it once; the doubled call is the form of 22:11 and 46:2. Jacob answers Τί ἐστιν; "What is it?" where the Masoretic version reads "Here I am" (הִנֵּנִי).

The alignment seeds a lack of "all that" (אֵת כָּל אֲשֶׁר) after γάρ, but ὅσα, "as many things as," renders כָּל אֲשֶׁר, and אֵת has no English: nothing is lacking, and the seed is refused. The other two lacks, נָא "please" and כָּל "all" before the he-goats, are seeded and marked.

ἐν τῷ τόπῳ ᾧ, "in the place where," as Swete prints it from Alexandrinus, where Rahlfs reads ἐν τόπῳ θεοῦ, "in the place of God," and the Masoretic version reads "I am the El of Bethel, where…": Rahlfs's text translates the name Bethel, "House of El," as the Greek did at 28:19 ("House of God"), and Swete's text, without θεοῦ, keeps no trace of the name. The place is printed as Swete has it and marked as a different name (145f). The Greek also adds ὁ ὀφθείς σοι, "who was seen by you" (seeded), so that God names himself by the vision of 28:12–15 rather than by the place, and μοι, "for me," after the pillar (seeded); for the second "where" it has "and" (the lack is seeded). ἤλειψας is "rubbed with oil," not "anointed," which is left for χρίω.

Swete prints ἄπελθε, "go away," twice. The first, for the Masoretic version's "go out" (צֵא), is Swete's alone (Alexandrinus; Rahlfs differs here); the second stands in both Greek texts for "return" (שׁוּב), so that in the Greek Jacob is sent away to the land of his genesis rather than told to return to it, as he was at 31:3 (ἀποστρέφου, "turn back").

The alignment seeds a lack of "all that" (כֹּל אֲשֶׁר) after οὖν, but ὅσα, "as many things as," renders it; the seed is refused. The lack of "For" (כִּי) at the head of the verse is seeded and marked. The Greek adds "and the glory" (seeded), the δόξα of the sons' complaint at 31:1, and has ἔσται, "shall be," for "it is."

Μεσοποταμία, "Mesopotamia," where the Masoretic version reads "Paddan-aram": the Greek's name for the region, printed as it sounds and marked (145f), as at 28:2–7. The Greek lacks the Masoretic version's doubled "that he had gained, the livestock of his getting" (seeded), adds "and all that was his" (seeded), and has τὰ ὑπάρχοντα, "belongings," for "livestock."

τὰ εἴδωλα, "the idols," where the Masoretic version reads "the teraphim" (הַתְּרָפִים): the Greek gives the household images the general word for the image of a god, the word of 1 Cor 8:4 ("an idol is nothing in the kosmos") and 1 John 5:21, where the Hebrew has a name of its own for them. Laban calls them "my gods" (31:30), in both versions. Again at 31:34–35.

Λαβάν, "hid it from Laban," where the Masoretic version reads "stole the heart of Laban" (וַיִּגְנֹב … אֶת־לֵב): the Greek gives the sense of the idiom, to deceive, and has no word for "heart." It has τοῦ μὴ ἀναγγεῖλαι, an infinitive of purpose, "so as not to announce," for "without telling." Σύρος, "the Syrian," for the Masoretic version's "the Aramean" is a different name, printed as it sounds and marked (145f), as at 25:20 and 28:5; again at 31:24, and at 31:22, where the Greek adds it.

μή ποτε with a warning or a purpose is "lest," split by construction from "perhaps," its sense with a fear or a doubt (24:5, 39; the lexicon row at 24:5). Again at 31:29 and 31:31.

Laban's complaints stand in another order in the Greek. The Masoretic version has "And you stole my heart" here and "Why did you take cover to bolt, and steal me, and did not tell me?" at 31:27. The Greek asks here, ἵνα τί κρυφῇ ἀπέδρας, "Why did you run away secretly," with one theft, ἐκλοποφόρησάς με, "and rob me," for the Masoretic version's two, and has nothing for the question at 31:27 (marked there). The question is marked as a plus here and its Hebrew as a lack there, as ruling 54 marks a transposition. Swete prints κρυβῇ, a spelling of the adverb κρυφῇ.

    Rulings 21, 54, 143

The Greek has no words here for the Masoretic version's "Why did you take cover to bolt, and steal me" (see 31:26). For "and did not tell me?" it has a condition, καὶ εἰ ἀνήγγειλάς μοι, "And if you had announced to me," which opens the apodosis "I would have sent you out": the Greek states no negation, and the sense is the same, that Jacob told him nothing. It has τύμπανα, "drums," in the plural, and μουσικά, "music," for "songs."

ἀπελθεῖν, "to go away," which Swete prints from Alexandrinus and the Masoretic version lacks ("you have yearned for the house of your father"); the alignment cannot pair Swete's text here. The Greek keeps the doubling of the second verb in its own way, ἐπιθυμίᾳ ἐπεθύμησας, "with desire you desired" (the dative noun for the infinitive), but has πεπόρευσαι, "you have gone," alone for the Masoretic version's "going you have gone."

Swete prints καὶ οὐκ ἐπέγνω παρ’ αὐτῷ οὐθέν, "And he recognized nothing with him," which the Masoretic version lacks: the Greek tells the outcome of the search before the search is narrated (31:33–35). The alignment cannot pair Swete's text in this stretch, and the sentence is marked as a plus. Swete's text also attaches "in front of our brothers" to the sentence of death, not to "recognize," and has τῶν σῶν, "what of yours," for "for yourself"; the Greek lacks the second "for yourself" (seeded).

    Rulings 2, 57

Μὴ βαρέως φέρε, "do not bear it heavily," the Greek idiom for taking a thing hard. φέρω's home gloss "bring" would make a false sense here (57), and "bear" is printed, though "bear" is τίκτω's home gloss. The Masoretic version reads "Let it not flare in the eyes of my lord." Rachel's τὰ κατ’ ἐθισμὸν τῶν γυναικίων, "what is after the habit of women," uses the diminutive γυναίκιον, which Swete prints from Alexandrinus.

Swete prints τὰ σκεύη τοῦ οἴκου μου, "the vessels of my house," from Alexandrinus, where the Masoretic version reads "all my articles"; the alignment cannot pair it, and "of my house" is marked as a plus. Swete also names "your brothers and my brothers" in that order, where the Masoretic version reads "my brothers and your brothers." The Greek opens with καὶ ὅτι, "And since," for "For."

ἐγὼ ἀπετίννυον ἀπ’ ἐμαυτοῦ, "I, I would repay from myself," where the Masoretic version reads "I, I would count it my sin; from my hand you would seek it": in the Greek Jacob made the loss good out of his own flock, beyond what the law asks of a keeper (Exod 22:12 LXX, Eng 22:13: what is caught by beasts he does not repay). The Greek lacks "you would seek it" (seeded), and has κλέμματα, "thefts," nouns, for the participles "stolen."

    Rulings 2, 149

παρελογίσω τὸν μισθόν μου, "you falsely reckoned my wage," where the Masoretic version reads "you changed my wage": παραλογίζομαι keeps its home gloss "mislead" (29:25), and with a thing as its object, the wage, it prints "falsely reckon," the verb's own sense (149g).

ὁ φόβος Ἰσαάκ, "the Fear of Isaac," where the Masoretic version reads "the Terror of Isaac" (פַּחַד יִצְחָק): φόβος keeps its home gloss and takes a capital as a title of God, as at 31:54. The Greek has one "God," "the God of my father Abraham," where the Masoretic version reads "the Elohim of my father, the Elohim of Abraham"; the lack is marked. It has "reproved you" (σε seeded) "yesterday" for "set right last night"; Swete prints χθές, the short form of ἐχθές.

The Greek gives Jacob a reply that the Masoretic version lacks here: "Now Jacob said to him, 'Look, no one is with us; see, God is witness between me and you.'" The first words and "see" are seeded as pluses. Its last words, "God is witness between me and you," are the words the Masoretic version gives Laban at 31:50 ("see, Elohim is witness between me and between you"), which the Greek lacks there, where the lack is marked; the alignment links them across the verses, but under 149k they are marked as a plus where they stand, so the reader sees the gap at 31:50 and the words here. "No one is with us" also stands at 31:50 in both versions.

βουνός, "hill," where the Masoretic version reads "heap" (גַּל), through 31:46–52: the Greek makes the pile of stones a hill, the word of Luke 3:5 ("every mountain and hill shall be made low") and 23:30. The Greek adds "and drank" (seeded), and has "collected" for "took." Laban's words at the end of the verse are marked as a plus (149k; see the note there).

The Greek closes the verse with Laban's words, "This hill bears witness between me and you today," which the Masoretic version lacks at 31:46; it has like words at 31:48 ("This heap is witness between me and between you this day"). The sentence is marked as a plus where it stands (149k); the seeded plus "to him" is taken into it.

Laban names the heap Βουνὸς μάρτυς, "Hill Witness," where the Masoretic version has the Aramaic Jegar-sahadutha (יְגַר שָׂהֲדוּתָא, "heap of witness"), set in its own type (30); Jacob names it Βουνὸς μαρτυρεῖ, "Hill Bears Witness," where the Masoretic version has Galeed (גַּלְעֵד, "heap of witness"). The Greek translates both names and has no Aramaic, but keeps the two apart, a noun for Laban's name and a verb for Jacob's. The play of Galeed on Gilead (גִּלְעָד, 31:21–25), the land named from the heap, is lost, since the Greek spells the land Γαλαάδ. Different names, printed as the Greek says them and marked (145f); again at 31:48.

Laban's words here resemble the Masoretic version's 31:51–52, which the Greek lacks where the Masoretic version has them: "Look, this hill and this pillar, which I have made stand between me and you" is its 31:51 ("Look, this heap, and look, the standing stone that I have cast between me and between you"), and "and this pillar bears witness" the opening of its 31:52 ("and witness is the standing stone"). They are marked as pluses where they stand (149k), with "to Jacob," which the Masoretic version has at 31:51 and not here. "This hill bears witness" answers the Masoretic version's 31:48, "This heap is witness"; the Greek has no words here for its "between me and between you this day," and the lack is marked. The seeded plus αὕτη, "this," is taken into the last plus.

Ἡ ὅρασις, "the Sight," where the Masoretic version reads "the Mizpah" (הַמִּצְפָּה, "the lookout"), named from יִצֶף "watch": the Greek translates the name, and keeps its play with the verb, Ἐφίδοι, "may he look on," which Swete prints aspirated from Alexandrinus (Rahlfs Ἐπίδοι). It has ὁ θεός, "God," where the Masoretic version reads ADONAI, a different divine name, marked; and ἀποστησόμεθα, "we shall withdraw," for "we shall be hidden."

The Masoretic 31:51 ("And Laban said to Jacob, 'Look, this heap, and look, the standing stone that I have cast between me and between you'") is not in the Greek, which has no verse 31:51. The Greek lacks the Masoretic version's opening words, "Witness is this heap, and witness is the standing stone"; like words stand in Swete's 31:48 ("this hill bears witness, and this pillar bears witness"), marked there as a plus, and the lack is marked here (149k). μηδὲ σὺ διαβῇς, "For if I do not cross over to you, nor you cross over to me," keeps the Hebrew witness clause's "if … not" (אִם … לֹא) word for word, where the Masoretic version prints "that I, I will not pass over" (129m). Ruling 129m stays a Hebrew rule: the Greek ἐάν … μή … μηδέ prints as it stands, "if … not … nor" (149h), with the end of the oath unspoken (21). The Greek lacks the first "this heap" (seeded), so that the hill and the pillar are named once, as the thing neither crosses.
