2 And Judah saw there a daughter of a Canaanite man, and his name Shua; and he took her and came in to her.
2 And Judah saw there a daughter of a Canaanite man; her name Shua2; and he took her and entered to her.
2 There Judah saw the daughter of a Canaanite man whose name was Shua. He married her and slept with her.

3 And she conceived and bore a son, and he called his name Er.
3 And having conceived, she bore a son, and he called his name Er.
3 She became pregnant and gave birth to a son, and he named him Er.

4 And she conceived again and bore a son, and she called his name Onan.
4 And having conceived further, she bore a son, and she called his name Onan3.
4 She became pregnant again and gave birth to a son, and she named him Onan.

5 And she added again and bore a son, and she called his name Shela3; and he was in Chezib4 when she bore him.
5 And having added further, she bore a son, and she called his name Shela; now she was in Chezib at the time when she bore them.4
5 She gave birth to yet another son, and she named him Shela. Judah was at Chezib when she gave birth to him.

6 And Judah took a woman for Er his firstborn, and her name Tamar.
6 And Judah took a woman for Er his firstborn, whose name Tamar.
6 Judah got a wife for Er, his firstborn son. Her name was Tamar.

7 And Er, the firstborn of Judah, was bad5 in the eyes of Adonai, and Adonai made him die6.
7 Er, Judah's firstborn, was bad in the eyes of the LORD, and the LORD put him to death.

8 And Judah said to Onan, "Come in to the woman of your brother, and do the brother-in-law's duty7 to her, and make stand seed for your brother."
8 Now Judah said to Onan3, "Enter to the woman of your brother, and wed her, and make rise seed for your brother."
8 Then Judah said to Onan, "Sleep with your brother's wife and do your duty to her as her brother-in-law. Raise up offspring for your brother."

9 And Onan knew that the seed would not be his; and it was, whenever he came in to the woman of his brother, he ruined8 it to the land, so as not to give seed to his brother.
9 Now Onan3, having come to know that the seed would not be his—it came to be, whenever he entered to the woman of his brother, he poured out on the land, so as not to give seed to his brother.6
9 Onan knew that the offspring would not be his. Whenever he slept with his brother's wife, he wasted his seed on the ground. He did this so that he would not give offspring to his brother.

10 And what he did was bad in the eyes of Adonai, and he made him die6 too.
10 Now the word appeared evil before God, that he did this, and he put to death this one too.7
10 What Onan did was bad in the eyes of the LORD, and he put Onan to death too.

11 And Judah said to Tamar his daughter-in-law, "Dwell a widow in the house of your father until Shela my son is great"; for he said, "Lest he too die like his brothers." And Tamar went and dwelt in the house of her father.
11 Now Judah said to Tamar his daughter-in-law, "Sit a widow in the house of your father until Shela my son comes to be great"; for he said, "Lest he too die just like his brothers." Now Tamar, having gone away, sat in the house of her father.
11 Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, "Live as a widow in your father's house until my son Shela grows up." For he thought, "He might die too, like his brothers." And Tamar went and lived in her father's house.

12 And the days were many, and the daughter of Shua, the woman of Judah, died; and Judah was comforted9, and he went up to the shearers of his flock, he and Hirah his fellow the Adullamite, to Timnah.
12 Now the days were multiplied, and there died‸ Shua, the woman of Judah; and having been comforted, Judah went up to those shearing his sheep, he and Hirah his shepherd8, the Adullamite, to Timnah9.
12 Many days passed, and the daughter of Shua, Judah's wife, died. When Judah had been comforted, he went up to Timnah, to the men who were shearing his flock. His friend Hirah the Adullamite went with him.

13 And it was told to Tamar, saying, "Look, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his flock."
13 And it was reported to Tamar his daughter-in-law, saying, "Look, your father-in-law went up to Timnah9 to shear his sheep."
13 Tamar was told, "Look, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his flock."

14 And she removed the garments of her widowhood from on her, and covered herself with the veil, and wrapped herself, and sat at the doorway of Enaim10, which is on the way to Timnah; for she saw that Shela was great, and she had not been given to him for a woman.
14 And having taken off the cloaks of widowhood from herself, she threw around herself a summer veil and beautified herself, and sat down at the gates of Enaim, which is on the passage of Timnah9; for she saw that Shela his son had come to be great, but he did not give her to him for a woman.10
14 She took off her widow's clothes, covered herself with a veil and wrapped herself up. Then she sat down at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah. She did this because she saw that Shela had grown up, and she had not been given to him as his wife.

15 And Judah saw her and reckoned her for a whore, for she had covered her face.
15 And having seen her, Judah thought11 her to be a whore; for she had veiled her face, and he did not recognize her.
15 When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, because she had covered her face.

16 And he turned aside1 to her, to the way, and said, "Up, please, let me come in to you"—for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. And she said, "What will you give me, that you may come in to me?"
16 Now he turned aside to her, to the way, and said to her, "Allow‸ me to enter to you"—for he did not come to know that she was his daughter-in-law. But she said, "What will you give me, if you enter to me?"12
16 He turned aside to her by the road and said, "Come, please, let me sleep with you." For he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. She said, "What will you give me, if you sleep with me?"

16 ἐξέκλινεν δὲ πρὸς αὐτὴν τὴν ὁδὸν καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ Ἔασόν με εἰσελθεῖν πρὸς σέ· οὐ γὰρ ἔγνω ὅτι ἡ νύμφη αὐτοῦ ἐστίν. ἡ δὲ εἶπεν Τί μοι δώσεις ἐὰν εἰσέλθῃς πρὸς μέ;

17 And he said, "I will send a kid of goats from the flock." And she said, "If you will give a pledge11 until you send it."
17 Now he said, "I send you a kid of goats from the sheep." But she said, "If you will give a pledge until you send it."13
17 He said, "I will send you a young goat from the flock." She said, "If you will give me a pledge until you send it."

18 And he said, "What is the pledge that I shall give you?" And she said, "Your seal and your cord and your staff that is in your hand." And he gave them to her and came in to her, and she conceived by him.
18 Now he said, "What is the pledge that I shall give you?" But she said, "Your ring and the necklace and the rod that is in your hand."14 And he gave them to her, and entered to her; and she took in the womb by him.
18 He asked, "What pledge should I give you?" She answered, "Your seal, your cord, and the staff in your hand." He gave them to her and slept with her, and she became pregnant by him.

19 And she rose and went, and removed her veil from on her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.
19 And having risen, she went away, and took off the summer veil from herself, and clothed herself in the cloaks of her widowhood.
19 Then she got up and went away. She took off her veil and put on her widow's clothes.

20 And Judah sent the kid of the goats by the hand of his fellow the Adullamite, to take the pledge from the hand of the woman; and he did not find her.
20 Now Judah sent the kid of goats by the hand of his shepherd8, the Adullamite, to recover the pledge from‸ the woman; and he did not find her.15
20 Judah sent the young goat with his friend the Adullamite, to get the pledge back from the woman. But his friend did not find her.

21 And he asked the men of her place, saying, "Where is the consecrated woman12, the one at Enaim10 on the way?" And they said, "There has been no consecrated woman12 here."
21 Now he questioned the men at the place‸, "Where is the whore16, the one who came to be at Enaim on the way?" And they said, "There was no whore here."
21 He asked the men who lived there, "Where is the consecrated woman who was at Enaim by the road?" They said, "There has been no consecrated woman here."

22 And he returned to Judah and said, "I did not find her; and also the men of the place said, 'There has been no consecrated woman12 here.'"
22 And he turned back to Judah and said, "I did not find; and‸ the men from the place say that there is no whore16 here."17
22 So he went back to Judah and said, "I did not find her. Also, the men who live there said, 'There has been no consecrated woman here.'"

23 And Judah said, "Let her take it for herself, lest we become a contempt. Look, I sent this kid, and you did not find her."
23 Now Judah said, "Let her have them, but lest we be laughed at. I, on the one hand, have sent this kid; but you have not found."18
23 Judah said, "Let her keep the things, or people will hold us in contempt. Look, I sent this young goat, and you did not find her."

24 And it was, about three months after, and it was told to Judah, saying, "Tamar your daughter-in-law has whored, and also, look, she is pregnant by whoring." And Judah said, "Bring her out, and let her be burned."
24 Now it came to be, after‸ three months, it was reported to Judah, saying, "Tamar your daughter-in-law has played the whore, and‸ look, she has a child in the womb by whoring." Now Judah said, "Bring her out, and let her be burned up."19
24 About three months later, Judah was told, "Your daughter-in-law Tamar has prostituted herself. And now she is pregnant from it." Judah said, "Bring her out, and let her be burned!"

25 She was being brought out, and she sent to her father-in-law, saying, "By the man to whom these belong, I am pregnant." And she said, "Recognize13, please: whose are these, the seal and the cords and the staff?"
25 Now she, being led, sent to her father-in-law, saying, "By the man whose these are, I have a child in the womb." And she said, "Recognize‸: whose are the ring and the necklace14 and this rod?"20
25 As she was being brought out, she sent word to her father-in-law: "I am pregnant by the man who owns these things." She also said, "Please look and see if you recognize them. Whose are this seal, these cords and this staff?"

26 And Judah recognized13 them and said, "She is more just14 than I, for therefore15: I did not give her to Shela my son." And he did not add again to know her.
26 Now Judah recognized and said, "Tamar has been justified rather than I, because I did not give her to Shela my son."21 And he did not add further to come to know her.
26 Judah recognized them and said, "She is more just than I am, because I did not give her to my son Shela." And he did not sleep with her again.

27 And it was, at the time of her bearing, and look, twins in her body.
27 Now it came to be, at the time when she bore, and here there were twins in her belly.22
27 When the time came for her to give birth, there were twins in her womb.

28 And it was, in her bearing, and one gave forth a hand; and the midwife16 took and knit on his hand scarlet, saying, "This one went out first."
28 Now it came to be, in her bearing, the one brought forth first the hand; now the midwife, having taken, bound on his hand scarlet, saying, "This one shall go out the former."23
28 As she was giving birth, one of them put out a hand. The midwife took a scarlet thread and tied it on his hand. She said, "This one came out first."

Notes

  1. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "turned in to" (KJV) / "visited" (RSV); at 38:16 "turned unto her" (KJV) / "went over to her" (RSV)

    Rulings 2, 57

The home gloss of נָטָה is "stretch out," of a tent (12:8; 26:25), an arm or the skies. Used without an object, of a person, it is to bend one's way aside: Judah "turned aside as far as" Hirah (v. 1) and "turned aside to her, to the way" (v. 16); compare the ass that "turned aside from the way" (Num 22:23). "Stretched out to her" would make a false sense in English (57), so both verses print "turned aside," and the one English holds the chain the chapter builds, the two turnings of Judah, from his brothers and toward Tamar. The rendering is a departure, noted here for both.

    Ruling 18

Adullam is a town of the Judean lowland (Josh 15:35), later David's cave (1 Sam 22:1). The names of this chapter are in the table below.

  3. Decision↩ Back to the text

    Expected: "Shelah" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 110, 18

שֵׁלָה is a different name from שֶׁלַח, the son of Arpachshad (10:24; 11:12–15), whom the English tradition also calls "Shelah." Ruling 110 gives the familiar form to the first in canonical order and a distinguishing spelling to the second, so Judah's son is "Shela," Everett Fox's form. The gentilic "Shelanites" (Num 26:20) keeps the same stem.

  4. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 17, 18

כְּזִיב sounds like the verb כָּזַב "lie, fail": a spring "whose waters do not fail" (Isa 58:11, לֹא־יְכַזְּבוּ). Rashi records the play: she ceased bearing after this son. The LXX makes Shua's daughter the subject, "she was in Chasbi when she bore them." The Masoretic "he" is Judah, and the place is likely Achzib of the lowland (Josh 15:44; Mic 1:14, where the prophet makes the same pun, "the houses of Achzib shall be an אַכְזָב, a lie").

  5. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 17, 18

עֵר "Er" is רַע "bad" spelled backwards, and the verse puts the two side by side. The home gloss "bad" is printed and the pun goes here, since English has no word that keeps the name and the gloss (17). Nothing is said of what he did.

  6. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "slew him" (KJV, 38:7, 10) / "slew him" (RSV)

    Rulings 2, 20

וַיְמִתֵהוּ and וַיָּמֶת are the hiphil of מוּת "die," the causative, "made him die." "Kill" is הָרַג's (37:20, 26), and "slay" would give a third English word to one Hebrew. The stem is kept visible as at 37:18. In v. 10 the subject is not repeated; it is Adonai of the same clause, and the English keeps "he."

  7. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "marry her" (KJV) / "perform the duty of a brother-in-law to her" (RSV)

    Rulings 10, 25

יִבֵּם is a verb made from יָבָם, the brother of a dead husband, and names what he does: he takes the widow so that a son may "stand on the name of his dead brother, that his name not be wiped out of Israel" (Deut 25:5–10). Here the duty is already custom, before any law. A verb is kept a verb (10), and the phrase names the act without saying "marry." The next words give its purpose, וְהָקֵם זֶרַע, the hiphil of קוּם "make stand," the verb of making a covenant stand (6:18; 9:9; 17:7): "make stand seed for your brother," as Deut 25:7 has "to make stand a name for his brother." The Sadducees' question in Matt 22:24 quotes the law in Greek (ἀναστήσει σπέρμα, "raise up seed").

  8. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "he spilled it on the ground" (KJV) / "he spilled the semen on the ground" (RSV)

    Rulings 2, 37

שִׁחֵת אַרְצָה has no object: "he ruined, to the land." שָׁחַת is the verb of the flood chain, the land and all flesh ruined (6:11–12) and Elohim ruining (6:13, 17), and its home gloss "ruin" is held (37); "it" is supplied. וְהָיָה אִם with a perfect is a repeated action, "whenever," not a single act. The sin is named in v. 9 itself: "so as not to give seed to his brother." It is the refusal of the duty of v. 8, not the act alone, though b. Niddah 13a and the later word "onanism" read the act.

  9. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 125, 101

וַיִּנָּחֶם, the niphal of נחם with a dead person in view, is "be comforted" (125d; 24:67, Isaac "was comforted after his mother"). Judah is comforted for his wife; his father, in the chapter before, refused to be (37:35).

  10. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 17, 18

בְּפֶתַח עֵינַיִם, "at the doorway of Enaim," is a place name that is also the word "two eyes" or "two springs." The LXX has "at the gates of Ainan"; Josh 15:34 has an Enam (הָעֵינָם) in the lowland near Adullam. Genesis Rabbah 85 and Rashi hear the words: "at the opening of the eyes," a crossroads where all eyes look, or the place where Tamar's eyes were opened to what she must do. The chapter turns on seeing: she "saw" that Shela was grown (v. 14), Judah "saw her" and did not know her (vv. 15–16), and he "recognized" (v. 26). פֶּתַח is "doorway," as at 4:7.

  11. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 2, 4

עֵרָבוֹן "pledge" passed into Greek as ἀρραβών, the word of the LXX here, and of Paul for the Spirit, "the pledge of our inheritance" (2 Cor 1:22; 5:5; Eph 1:14), which the NT follows in its Greek (4). Its root is עָרַב "be surety," and Judah, who gives a pledge here, will make himself surety for Benjamin (43:9; 44:32).

  12. Decision↩ Back to the text

    Expected: "harlot" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 1, 3, 46

קְדֵשָׁה is of the root of קָדַשׁ "be holy": a woman consecrated, set apart. Deut 23:18 forbids a קְדֵשָׁה among the daughters of Israel and a קָדֵשׁ among the sons, and Hos 4:14 sets the קְדֵשׁוֹת beside the זֹנוֹת "whores" at the sacrifices. Akkadian qadištu is a class of women attached to a temple, attested as midwives and wet nurses. Whether the word implies sex for hire, as the English tradition reads it ("temple prostitute," NRSV), is contested. Here Judah "reckoned her for a whore" (זוֹנָה, v. 15), and the townsfolk report and his friend asks for a "consecrated woman," a different word, perhaps the more respectable one. The verse keeps the two words apart, and so does the English. The stranger attested sense, the root's, is printed (1); it settles nothing about temple practice (46). The WPRB keeps "consecrated woman."

    Ruling 37

הַכֶּר־נָא: "Recognize, please" is the brothers' line to their father (37:32), and "he recognized" his son's tunic (37:33). The chain is held (37). b. Sotah 10b and Genesis Rabbah 85: Judah said to his father "Recognize, please," and now he hears it. Tamar does not name him; she shows the pledge and leaves him to say it.

  14. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "She hath been more righteous than I" (KJV) / "She is more righteous than I" (RSV)

    Rulings 2, 95

צָדַק is the verb of the CORE צֶדֶק / צְדָקָה "justice" and צַדִּיק "just," so its English is "be just." With מִן it is a comparison, "more just than I," as Saul says to David, "You are more just than I" (1 Sam 24:18, צַדִּיק אַתָּה מִמֶּנִּי). The comparative is printed and not reversed: Judah does not say she is just and he is not, but that her claim on the duty of v. 8 is the stronger. Targum Onkelos expands, "she is in the right; she is pregnant by me," and b. Sotah 10b has a voice from heaven say מִמֶּנִּי "from me": these things came from me.

  15. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Ruling 128

כִּי עַל־כֵּן, "for therefore," gives the reason as the fact that grounds the verdict (18:5; 19:8; 33:10): she is in the right because of what Judah failed to do. עַל־כֵּן is "therefore," tagged on כֵּן (128i).

  16. Decision↩ Back to the text

    Expected: "the midwife" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 2, 20

הַמְיַלֶּדֶת is the piel participle of יָלַד "bear": the one who helps a woman bear (35:17; Exod 1:15–21, the Hebrew midwives). The qal is "bear," the hiphil "produce" (20); the piel participle is printed by its English noun, "midwife," which has no other claimant. נָתַן יָד is printed "gave forth a hand," the home gloss with its English adverb, since "gave a hand" would mean help. "Knit" is the home gloss of קָשַׁר: she ties the scarlet on. The Hebrew has "scarlet," with no word for "thread."

  17. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 17, 18, 128

מַה־פָּרַצְתָּ עָלֶיךָ פָּרֶץ: the verb is פָּרַץ "burst out," the verb of the promise to Jacob's seed, "you shall burst out to the west and to the east" (28:14; 30:30, 43; Exod 1:12), held as "burst" (128h); the noun is "breach," a break in a wall (Isa 58:12; Amos 9:11). "Burst … breach" keeps the alliteration, and the name Perez is the noun itself. מַה may be an exclamation or a question, "Why have you burst a breach?" עָלֶיךָ "upon yourself" Rashi reads as "you have made yourself strong." Perez is the ancestor of David (Ruth 4:12, 18–22), and stands in Matt 1:3 with "Tamar" beside him. The subject of "he called" is not stated (v. 3 also has "he," vv. 4–5 "she").

  18. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Ruling 18

זֶרַח "Zerah" is the verb זָרַח "rise, shine," used of the sun (32:32; Isa 60:1–3). Rashi: named for the brightness of the scarlet on his hand. The firstborn by the midwife's sign comes second, as Jacob came out holding Esau's heel (25:25–26). The same name is borne by an Edomite chief (36:13, 17, 33).

ἀφίκετο ἕως πρὸς ἄνθρωπόν τινα, "reached as far as a certain man," where the Masoretic version reads "turned aside as far as a man" (וַיֵּט): the Greek has Judah arrive, not turn off the road; the verb is the one of Rom 16:19. ἄνθρωπος prints "man" because a woman, the daughter of 38:2, is in the next verse (11). Swete prints Εἱρᾶς (G91320), a spelling of the Masoretic version's חִירָה, "Hirah," which keeps the familiar form (145f; names table); the alignment cannot pair it because Rahlfs spells it otherwise, and the two Greek forms are one name. The Greek opens with δέ and has no "and" before "Judah went down."

ᾗ ὄνομα Σαύα, "her name Shua," with a feminine relative: in the Greek Shua is the name of the daughter, where the Masoretic version reads "and his name Shua," the name of her father. The Greek holds this at 38:12, where it names the woman Σαύα and has no word for "the daughter of" (seeded, marked). Σαύα is a spelling of שׁוּעַ and keeps the familiar form (145f; names table).

    Expected: "Onan" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 2, 18, 148, 149

Αὐνάν is Swete's spelling of Onan (אוֹנָן), and also the form the lexicon holds for Aner, Abram's ally (14:13, 24). The name prints by its referent (149a, as Βάλλα for Bilhah at 30:3): this is Judah's second son, and the familiar form is printed, unmarked. Again at 38:8, 9.

αὕτη δὲ ἦν ἐν Χασβὶ ἡνίκα ἔτεκεν αὐτούς, "now she was in Chezib at the time when she bore them," where the Masoretic version reads "and he was in Chezib when she bore him": in the Greek the one in Chezib is the mother, and the place is where she bore all three sons. The alignment seeds ἦν, "was," as a plus, but the Masoretic version's English already has "was," and nothing is added; the seed is refused (150j). Χασβί is a spelling of כְּזִיב, "Chezib" (145f; names table). The participles of 38:3–5 (συλλαβοῦσα, προσθεῖσα) stand for the Masoretic version's finite verbs, and are marked as at 34:2.

The Greek has κύριος in the first clause, "evil before the Lord," and θεός in the second, ἀπέκτεινεν αὐτὸν ὁ θεός, "God killed him," where the Masoretic version reads ADONAI both times; the second is marked as a different name. The same θεός stands at 38:10 for the Masoretic version's ADONAI. ἐναντίον, "before," renders "in the eyes of," and is marked as at 34:11.

ἐξέχεεν ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν, "he poured out on the land," where the Masoretic version reads "he ruined it to the land" (שִׁחֵת): the Greek names the act by its verb of pouring (ἐκχέω, of blood at Matt 23:35 and 26:28), with no object, as the Hebrew has none; nothing is added or softened. γνοὺς δὲ Αὐνάν, "now Onan, having come to know," is a participle that the sentence leaves without its verb, as the Greek does: the main clause is ἐγίνετο, "it came to be." εἰσήρχετο, "he entered," is an imperfect of εἰσέρχομαι, a habit, carrying the Masoretic version's "whenever."

Swete prints τὸ ῥῆμα from Alexandrinus, where Rahlfs has no subject: πονηρὸν δὲ ἐφάνη τὸ ῥῆμα ἐναντίον τοῦ θεοῦ, "the word appeared evil before God," for the Masoretic version's "what he did was bad in the eyes of ADONAI." ῥῆμα keeps its home gloss "word," the thing said and the thing it tells of (Luke 2:15), here the deed. The Greek's verb is φαίνω in the passive, "appear" (147f), for the Masoretic version's "was bad"; it reads θεός for ADONAI (marked) and adds τοῦτο, "this," after "did" (seeded). θανατόω, "put to death," stands for the Masoretic version's "made him die."

ὁ ποιμὴν αὐτοῦ, "his shepherd," where the Masoretic version reads "his fellow" (רֵעֵהוּ): the Greek reads the same consonants as רֹעֵהוּ, "his shepherd," and so makes Hirah Judah's herdsman, on his way to the shearing. Again at 38:20. Swete spells the man's people Ὀδολλαμείτης here and at 38:20 (Ὀδολλαμίτην at 38:1), one word, "the Adullamite."

Θαμνά prints by its referent (149a, 148g): in Gen 38 it is the town of the shearing, the Masoretic version's תִּמְנָה, and the familiar form "Timnah" is printed, unmarked (names table). The same Greek form serves for Timna, the woman of Gen 36. Again at 38:13, 14.

Swete prints ὁ υἱὸς αὐτοῦ, "his son," after Shela, from Alexandrinus, where Rahlfs and the Masoretic version have the name alone; the alignment cannot pair it, and it is marked as a plus. The Greek has ἐκαλλωπίσατο, "she beautified herself," for the Masoretic version's "wrapped herself" (עָלַף hithpael): the Greek turns the disguise into adornment, as a whore would dress, and so readies Judah's mistake in 38:15. θερίστρῳ, "a summer veil," is the word of 38:19. She sits "at the gates of Enaim," plural, for "the doorway of Enaim" (πύλαι for פֶּתַח), "on the passage of Timnah": πάροδος is a way by or through (1 Cor 16:7 ἐν παρόδῳ, "in passing"), not the road (ὁδός), where the Masoretic version reads "on the way to Timnah"; the different word is marked. The last clause is active, αὐτὸς δὲ οὐκ ἔδωκεν αὐτὴν αὐτῷ γυναῖκα, "but he did not give her to him for a woman," naming Judah as the one who withheld her, where the Masoretic version reads "she had not been given." Αἰνάν is a spelling of עֵינַיִם, "Enaim" (145f; names table).

    Expected: "thought" (KJV, RSV)

    Ruling 2

δοκέω keeps its home gloss "seem" where a thing seems; with a person as subject and an accusative with infinitive, ἔδοξεν αὐτὴν πόρνην εἶναι, it is "he thought her to be a whore," and "seemed" would make no English. The Masoretic version reads "reckoned her for a whore" (חָשַׁב). The Greek adds καὶ οὐκ ἐπέγνω αὐτήν, "and he did not recognize her" (seeded), the verb that returns when Judah recognizes the pledge (38:25–26).

Ἔασόν με εἰσελθεῖν, "Allow me to enter," where the Masoretic version reads "Up, please, let me come in" (הָבָה נָּא): the Greek has a request for leave in place of the call, and no "please" (seeded, marked). Tamar's answer is a condition, ἐὰν εἰσέλθῃς, "if you enter," for the Masoretic version's "that you may come in" (כִּי). The Greek adds αὐτῇ, "to her" (seeded).

Swete prints the present ἀποστέλλω, "I send," from Alexandrinus, where Rahlfs has the future; the Masoretic version reads "I will send." The Greek adds σοι, "you" (seeded). ἀρραβών, "pledge," is the Masoretic version's own word in Greek letters (עֵרָבוֹן), the word Paul uses for the Spirit as the first instalment (2 Cor 1:22; 5:5; Eph 1:14).

Τὸν δακτύλιόν σου καὶ τὸν ὁρμίσκον, "your ring and the necklace," where the Masoretic version reads "your seal and your cord": the Greek names the seal by the ring that carries it (δακτύλιος, Luke 15:22), and the cord by a small neck-chain (ὁρμίσκος, the diminutive of ὅρμος, a necklace). At 38:25 the Greek has the singular ὁ ὁρμίσκος, where the Masoretic version reads "the cords." ῥάβδος keeps its home gloss "rod" (Heb 9:4).

ἡ πόρνη, "the whore," at 38:21 (twice) and 38:22, where the Masoretic version reads "the consecrated woman" (הַקְּדֵשָׁה, קְדֵשָׁה): the Masoretic text changes its word when Hirah asks in public, from Judah's זוֹנָה "whore" (38:15) to the woman of the shrine, and the Greek does not follow it, keeping the word of 38:15 through the scene. πόρνη holds its home gloss (34:31), and the difference is marked as a different word each time. ἡ γενομένη, "the one who came to be," stands for the Masoretic version's pronoun (הִוא), and the Greek's ἦν, "was," for "there has been."

The Greek has καί, "and," for the Masoretic version's "and also" (וְגַם), and the lack of "also" is marked (150l). The men's answer is reported, λέγουσιν μὴ εἶναι ἐνταῦθα πόρνην, "say that there is no whore here," a present and an indirect statement, where the Masoretic version reads "said, 'There has been no consecrated woman here.'" Οὐχ εὗρον, "I did not find," has no object. ἄνθρωποι prints "men" because a woman is in the verse (11).

It opens that clause with ἀλλά, "but," and sets the last two clauses against each other with μέν … δέ, "I, on the one hand, … but you," in perfects, "have sent … have not found," where the Masoretic version reads "Look, I sent this kid, and you did not find her."

The Greek has μετὰ τρίμηνον, "after three months," without the Masoretic version's "about" (כְּ): the Greek states the time flatly, and the lack is marked. ἐκπορνεύω, "play the whore," and πορνεία, "whoring," are of the root of πόρνη (38:15).

Ἐκ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τίνος ταῦτά ἐστιν, "by the man whose these are," for "to whom these belong." Δεδικαίωται Θαμὰρ ἢ ἐγώ, "Tamar has been justified rather than I," where the Masoretic version reads "She is more just than I" (צָדְקָה מִמֶּנִּי): the Greek has the perfect passive of δικαιόω, "justify," the verb of δίκαιος "just" and δικαιοσύνη "justice," with ἤ of preference. Whether she is declared in the right or made so the Greek does not say, and the English keeps it open (guide §1.4; 93). Luke 18:14 has the same construction: "this one went down to his house justified rather than that one" (δεδικαιωμένος … The Greek names her (seeded) and has οὗ εἵνεκεν, "because" (147f), for "for therefore." Ἐπέγνω, "recognized," has no object.

The midwife's word is a future, ἐξελεύσεται πρότερος, "shall go out the former," a prediction, where the Masoretic version reads "This one went out first"; πρότερος is the former of two (Eph 4:22).

The Hebrew plays the name Perez (פֶּרֶץ) on the breach and the bursting; the Greek turns the breach into its cause, the fence (φραγμός, Matt 21:33; Eph 2:14) broken through, and the name Φάρες no longer sounds in it. The sound the Greek does not carry is noted, not supplied (24). For "as he returned his hand" the Greek has ἐπισυνήγαγεν, "he gathered together," and for "look" εὐθύς, "straightway." Φάρες is a spelling of פֶּרֶץ, "Perez" (Matt 1:3; names table).
