1 Now Jacob, having seen that there was a sale in Egypt, said‸ to his sons, "Why do you dawdle?"1
1 Jacob saw that there was grain for sale in Egypt, and he said to his sons, "Why do you keep showing yourselves?"

1 Ἰδὼν δὲ Ἰακὼβ ὅτι ἐστὶν πρᾶσις ἐν Αἰγύπτῳ εἶπεν τοῖς υἱοῖς αὐτοῦ Ἵνα τί ῥᾳθυμεῖτε;

2 And he said, "Look, I have heard that there are rations in Egypt. Go down there and buy rations for us from there, and let us live and not die."
2 ‸"Look, I have heard that there is grain in Egypt. Go down there and purchase for us‸ small foods, so that we may live and not die."2
2 He said, "Look, I have heard that there is grain for sale in Egypt. Go down there and buy grain for us, so that we may live and not die."

3 And the brothers of Joseph went down, ten, to buy rations of corn from Egypt.
3 So ten of Joseph's brothers went down to buy grain from Egypt.

4 And Benjamin, the brother of Joseph, Jacob did not send with his brothers, for he said, "Lest harm meet him."
4 But Benjamin, the brother of Joseph, he did not send‸ with his brothers, for he said, "Lest an ailment befall him."3
4 But Jacob did not send Benjamin, Joseph's brother, with his brothers, because he said, "Harm might come to him."

5 And the sons of Israel came to buy rations in the middle of the comers, for the hunger was in the land of Canaan.
5 Now the sons of Israel came to buy with those coming, for the famine was in the land of Canaan.
5 So the sons of Israel came to buy grain along with the others who came, because the famine was in the land of Canaan.

6 And Joseph—he was the potentate over the land; he was the seller of rations2 to all the people of the land. And the brothers of Joseph came and prostrated themselves to him, nostrils to the land.
6 Now Joseph was ruler of the land; this one was selling to all the people of the land. Now the brothers of Joseph, having come, bowed down to him on face upon the land.4
6 Joseph was the governor over the land. He was the one who sold grain to all the people of the land. Joseph's brothers came and bowed down to him with their faces to the ground.

7 And Joseph saw his brothers and recognized them, and he made himself foreign3 to them, and spoke with them hard things, and said to them, "From where have you come?" And they said, "From the land of Canaan, to buy rations of food."
7 Now Joseph, having seen his brothers, recognized them, and he was estranging himself from them, and spoke to them hard things, and said to them, "From where have you arrived?" But they said, "From the land of Canaan, to buy foods."5
7 When Joseph saw his brothers, he recognized them. But he acted like a stranger to them and spoke harshly to them. He said to them, "Where have you come from?" They said, "From the land of Canaan, to buy food."

8 And Joseph recognized his brothers, and they did not recognize him.
8 Now Joseph recognized his brothers, but they did not recognize him.
8 Joseph recognized his brothers, but they did not recognize him.

9 And Joseph remembered the dreams that he had dreamed of them4. And he said to them, "Spies you are! To see the bareness of the land you have come."
9 And Joseph remembered the dreams that he himself had seen. And he said to them, "Spies you are! To consider the tracks of the country you have arrived."6
9 Joseph remembered the dreams he had dreamed about them. He said to them, "You are spies! You have come to see where the land is unprotected."

10 And they said to him, "No, my lord; and your servants have come to buy rations of food.
10 But they said‸, "No, lord; your servants, we have come to purchase foods.7
10 They said to him, "No, my lord. Your servants have come to buy food.

13 And they said, "Twelve, your servants, brothers are we, sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and look, the youngest is with our father this day, and the one is not."
13 But they said, "Twelve, your servants, brothers we are,‸ in the land of Canaan; and look, the younger is with our father today, but the other does not exist."9
13 They said, "We, your servants, are 12 brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan. The youngest is with our father today, and one is no more."

14 And Joseph said to them, "It is what I spoke to you, saying, 'Spies you are.'
14 Now Joseph said to them, "This is what I have said to you, saying, that 'Spies you are.'10
14 Joseph said to them, "It is just as I told you: you are spies.

15 By this you shall appear: by the health of Pharaoh, you shall not go out from here unless your younger brother comes here!11
15 This is how you will be tested: as Pharaoh lives, you will not leave this place unless your youngest brother comes here!

16 Send one of you, and let him take your brother; and you, be bound, and let your words be proved, whether truth is with you. And if not, life of Pharaoh, for spies you are6."
16 Send one of you, and take your brother; but you, be led away until your words come to be manifest, whether you speak truth or not. But if not, by the health of Pharaoh, surely spies you are."12
16 Send one of you to get your brother, while the rest of you are kept in prison. That way your words will be tested, to see whether you are telling the truth. If not, as Pharaoh lives, you are surely spies."

17 And he gathered them into custody three days.
17 And he set them in custody three days.
17 Then he put them in custody for three days.

18 On the third day Joseph said to them, "Do this and live. I fear the elohim.

19 If honest5 you are, let one brother of you be bound in the house of your custody; and you, go, bring rations for the hunger of your houses.
19 If peaceable you are, let one brother of you be held fast in the custody; but you, proceed and lead away the buying of your grain-dole‸,14
19 If you are honest men, let one of your brothers stay bound in the place where you are held. The rest of you go and take grain home for your hungry households.

20 And your youngest brother bring to me, and let your words be firm, and you shall not die." And they did thus.
20 and your younger brother bring down to me, and your words will be believed; but if not, you shall die." Now they did thus.15
20 Then bring your youngest brother to me, so that your words will be proved firm and you will not die." And they did so.

21 And they said, a man to his brother, "Indeed, liable are we concerning our brother, in that we saw the strait of his soul when he begged favor8 of us, and we did not hear. Therefore this strait has come to us."
21 And each said to his brother, "Yes, for in sin we are concerning our brother, in that we overlooked the affliction of his soul when he was begging earnestly of us, and we did not hearken to him. On account of this, this affliction has come upon us."16
21 They said to one another, "We really are guilty because of our brother. We saw how distressed he was when he begged us for mercy, and we would not listen. That is why this distress has come upon us."

22 And Reuben answered them, saying, "Did I not say to you, saying, 'Do not sin against the child'? And you did not hear. And his blood too—look—is inquired after."
22 Now Reuben, answering, said to them, "Did I not speak to you, saying, 'Do not wrong the lad'? And you did not hearken to me. And‸ look, his blood is sought out."17
22 Reuben answered them, "Didn't I tell you, 'Do not sin against the boy'? But you would not listen. And look, an account is being demanded for his blood too."

23 And they did not know that Joseph was hearing, for the go-between was between them.
23 But they did not know that Joseph was hearing, for the interpreter was between them.18
23 They did not know that Joseph understood them, because there was an interpreter between them.

24 And he went around away from them and wept. And he returned to them and spoke to them, and took Simeon from them and bound him before their eyes.
24 Now, having turned back away from them, Joseph wept. And again he approached them and said to them; and he took Simeon from them and bound him before them.19
24 Joseph turned away from them and wept. Then he came back and spoke to them. He took Simeon from them and tied him up in front of them.

25 And Joseph commanded, and they filled their articles with corn, and to return their silvers9, each man into his sack, and to give them provision for the way. And he did for them thus.
25 Now Joseph commanded to make full their containers with grain, and to give back the silver of each into his sack, and to give them provision for the way. And it came to be for them thus.20
25 Joseph gave orders, and their containers were filled with grain. He also ordered that each man's money be put back in his sack and that they be given provisions for the journey. And this was done for them.

26 And they lifted their rations onto their donkeys and went from there.
26 And, having laid the grain on their donkeys, they went away from there.
26 They loaded their grain on their donkeys and left.

27 And the one opened his sack to give fodder to his donkey at the lodging, and he saw his silver, and look, it was in the mouth of his pack.
27 Now one, having loosed his bag to give fodder to his donkeys where they lodged, saw the bond of his silver, and‸ it was above the mouth of the bag.21
27 At the place where they stopped for the night, one of them opened his sack to give feed to his donkey. He saw his money: it was right there in the mouth of his pack.

28 And he said to his brothers, "My silver has been returned; and also, look, in my pack!" And their heart went out, and they trembled, a man to his brother, saying, "What is this Elohim has done to us?"
28 And he said to his brothers, "The silver has been given back to me; and‸ look, it is in my bag!" And their heart was beside itself, and they were troubled with one another, saying, "What is this God has done to us?"22
28 He said to his brothers, "My money has been put back! Look, it is here in my pack!" Their hearts sank. Trembling, they turned to one another and said, "What is this that God has done to us?"

29 And they came to Jacob their father, to the land of Canaan, and told him all the things happening to them, saying,
29 Now they came to Jacob their father, into the land of Canaan, and reported to him all the things that had befallen them, saying,

33 And the man, the lord of the land, said to us, 'By this I shall know that honest5 you are: one brother of you settle with me, and the hunger of your houses11—take, and go.
33 Now the human, the lord of the land, said to us, 'By this we shall come to know that peaceable you are: one brother leave25 here with me, but having taken the buying of your grain-dole, go away.26
33 Then the man who is lord of the land said to us, 'This is how I will know that you are honest men. Leave one of your brothers with me. Take what your hungry households need, and go.

35 And it was, they were emptying out their sacks, and look, each man's bundle of his silver was in his sack. And they saw the bundles of their silvers9, they and their father, and they feared.
35 Now it came to be, as they were emptying their sacks, and the bond of the silver of each was in their sack. And they saw the bonds of their silver, they and their father, and they feared.28
35 As they were emptying their sacks, there in each man's sack was his bundle of money. When they and their father saw the bundles of money, they were afraid.

36 And Jacob their father said to them, "Me you have bereaved12: Joseph is not, and Simeon is not, and Benjamin you would take. On me have they all been."
36 Now Jacob their father said to them, "Me you have made childless: Joseph is not, Simeon is not, and Benjamin you will take. On me all these things have come to be."29
36 Their father Jacob said to them, "You have bereaved me. Joseph is no more, Simeon is no more, and now you want to take Benjamin. All these things have fallen on me."

37 And Reuben said to his father, saying, "My two sons you may make die if I do not bring him to you. Give him into my hand, and I, I will return him to you."
37 Now Reuben said to his father, saying, "My two sons kill if I do not lead him to you. Give him into my hand, and I30 will lead him up to you."31
37 Then Reuben said to his father, "You may put my two sons to death if I do not bring Benjamin back to you. Put him in my care, and I will bring him back to you."

38 And he said, "My son shall not go down with you, for his brother is dead, and he alone is left. And should harm meet him on the way on which you go, you would bring down my grayness in grief to Sheol."
38 But he said, "My son shall not go down with you, for his brother died, and he alone is left behind; and it will befall him to be ailing on the way on which you go, and you will bring down my old age with grief to Hades."32
38 But Jacob said, "My son will not go down with you, because his brother is dead, and he alone is left. If harm comes to him on the journey you are making, you will bring my gray head down to Sheol in grief."

Notes

  1. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "Why do ye look one upon another?" (KJV) / "Why do you look at one another?" (RSV)

    Rulings 1, 2

תִּתְרָאוּ is the hithpael of רָאָה "see," and the stem reads two ways. (a) Reciprocal, "see one another": 2 Kgs 14:8, 11, where Amaziah's "let us look one another in the face" is a challenge to battle; hence the KJV and RSV. (b) Reflexive, "make yourselves seen, show yourselves": Rashi, "why do you show yourselves before the sons of Ishmael and Esau as if you were sated?", that is, why are you seen to have food when you do not. The versions guess at the sense from the context: the LXX ἵνα τί ῥᾳθυμεῖτε "why are you idle?", Onkelos "why are you afraid?" English cannot hold both readings with one verb. Ruling 1 prints the stranger, reflexive reading, and the home gloss "see" is held inside it (2). "Stare" is שָׁאָה's and "look" is הִנֵּה's, so the reciprocal reading could not have been printed without a second departure.

  2. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "he it was that sold to all the people of the land" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 20, 134

הַמַּשְׁבִּיר is the hiphil participle of שָׁבַר, the verb whose qal is "buy rations" (vv. 2–3, 5, 7, 10): the causative, "make (them) buy rations," is selling them. Ruling 134(g) held the hiphil for this verse; it is printed "seller of rations," a split by stem (20) beside the qal, and keeps the noun שֶׁבֶר "rations" in view. The packet shows no earlier printing of the hiphil (at 41:56 the qal had Joseph as subject and was logged). "Sell" alone is מָכַר's (37:27–28, 36); the compound gloss keeps them apart. Joseph sells to "all the people of the land," and his brothers come to him as any buyer does.

  3. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "made himself strange unto them" (KJV) / "treated them like strangers" (RSV)

    Rulings 20, 127, 2

The verse sets two stems of נָכַר side by side: וַיַּכִּרֵם "and he recognized them," the hiphil (the recognitions of 27:23; 37:32–33; 38:25–26), and וַיִּתְנַכֵּר, the hithpael, "he made himself foreign." The hithpael is the stem of the noun נֵכָר "foreignness" and נָכְרִי "foreign" (129a): Jeroboam's wife "makes herself foreign," disguises herself (1 Kgs 14:5–6). So the man who knows them makes himself a foreigner to them, the same root twice, and v. 8 then turns it again: "he recognized them, and they did not recognize him." "Recognize" cannot carry the reflexive, so the hithpael takes its own English, a split by stem (20) that the lexicon row of נָכַר, which names the hiphil only, has not yet declared. The packet shows no earlier printing of the hithpael of נָכַר: unknown.

  4. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Ruling 74

לָהֶם "to them, for them, of them": the dreams of 37:5–10 were about the brothers, sheaves and stars bowing down, and the brothers have just bowed "nostrils to the ground" (v. 6). Rashi reads it so: he knew that the dreams had been fulfilled, for they had bowed to him. "Of them" keeps the dreams about them, not told to them.

  5. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "We are true men" (KJV) / "We are honest men" (RSV)

    Rulings 20, 2

כֵּנִים is the plural adjective כֵּן, "right, honest": the daughters of Zelophehad "speak right" (Num 27:7); "we are not doing right" (2 Kgs 7:9). It belongs to the root of כּוּן "be fixed, firm," so it is the man who stands as he says he stands. The source tags it with the adverb כֵּן "thus" (H3651), under which Strong's files both; the tag is kept and the adjective is printed "honest," a split by construction, at every occurrence (vv. 11, 19, 31, 33, 34). It is a different word from כֵּן "base" (H3653, 40:13; 41:13). "True" would take the stem of אֱמֶת "truth" (v. 16), which the same speech uses.

  6. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 21, 74

חֵי פַרְעֹה "life of Pharaoh" is the oath form of חַי ("as Adonai lives," Judg 8:19; 1 Sam 14:39), sworn here by the king's life, as the brothers will later hear it sworn. The literal "if" is kept with the curse unspoken (21): "if you go out from here" means you shall not. In v. 16 the oath is followed by כִּי, the asseverative "for," and the sentence it introduces is the charge itself: "for spies you are." Both clauses keep the conjunction the Hebrew has.

  7. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "I fear God" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 38, 92, 128, 134

אֶת־הָאֱלֹהִים has the article and no verb that agrees with it in the clause, so under 38 and 92 it is "the elohim," lowercase. Capitals go by the scene (128d, 129n, 134i). ADONAI is not named in Gen 42, and nothing in Joseph's speech to his brothers (vv. 7–24) gives Elohim a singular verb; v. 28, where Elohim does, is another scene, at the lodging on the road. So the scene leaves it open. The ambiguity is Joseph's own: he speaks to them as an Egyptian lord through a go-between (v. 23), and "the elohim" is what a foreign lord may say, as Abimelech's "fear of elohim" (20:11) was. The reader knows, as the brothers do not, that the speaker is the Joseph of 39:9 and 41:16. The WPRB keeps "the elohim" (WPRB guide, divine names).

  8. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "when he besought us" (KJV) / "when he besought us" (RSV)

    Rulings 2, 20

בְּהִתְחַנְנוֹ is the hithpael of חָנַן "favor": to seek favor for oneself, to plead (Deut 3:23; 1 Kgs 8:33; Esth 4:8). "Begged favor" keeps the home gloss inside the stem's reflexive sense. 37:23–28 told nothing of Joseph's pleading in the pit; the brothers tell it here, twenty years on. אֲשֵׁמִים "liable" is the adjective of אָשָׁם "liability" (26:10), one root: they owe for him, as a debt is owed.

  9. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 39, 26

כַּסְפֵּיהֶם is the plural of כֶּסֶף, "their silvers": each man's silver, counted man by man. It is not a plural of abstraction (26), and the concrete plural is kept (39), as in v. 35, "the bundles of their silvers."

  10. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 2, 74

וַיִּתֵּן אֹתָנוּ כִּמְרַגְּלִים "and he gave us as spies": נָתַן with כְּ is to hold, to treat as (1 Kgs 10:27 "he gave the silver as stones"). The home gloss "give" is kept (2); the sense goes to the WPRB, "treated us as."

  11. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Ruling 74

"and the hunger of your houses, take": the object is the hunger itself, short for the rations it needs, as in v. 19 "rations for the hunger of your houses." The LXX supplies the noun (τὸν δὲ ἀγορασμὸν τῆς σιτοδοσίας), and so do the KJV and RSV ("food for the famine"). The Hebrew is printed as it stands.

  12. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "Me have ye bereaved of my children" (KJV) / "You have bereaved me of my children" (RSV)

    Rulings 2, 129

שִׁכַּלְתֶּם is the piel of שָׁכֹל, the transitive "make bereaved." Ruling 129(j) deferred the piel split and holds "be bereaved" until it is made; "bereaved" is that gloss, here with Jacob as its object. The word is Rebekah's (27:45, "why should I be bereaved of you both in one day?") and returns at 43:14.

πρᾶσις, "a sale," where the Masoretic version reads "rations" (שֶׁבֶר): the Greek names the selling, not the grain, and the selling is Joseph's (42:6). For "Why do you make yourselves seen?" (the hithpael of רָאָה, 135h) the Greek has Ἵνα τί ῥᾳθυμεῖτε, "Why do you dawdle?": a father's rebuke of sons sitting idle, the sense the KJV's "look one upon another" was reaching for. The Greek does not repeat the name before "said," where the Masoretic version reads "and Jacob said" (seeded, marked).

The Greek has no "And he said" at the head of the verse and no "from there" after "for us" (both seeded, marked), and adds μικρὰ βρώματα, "small foods" (seeded), the provisions Jacob asks for again at 43:2, where the Masoretic version has them too ("a little food"). μικρός keeps its home gloss "small" and βρῶμα its plural. ἵνα ζῶμεν, "so that we may live," makes the purpose a clause, where the Masoretic version reads "and let us live."

μή ποτε συμβῇ αὐτῷ μαλακία, "lest an ailment befall him," where the Masoretic version reads "lest harm meet him" (אָסוֹן): μαλακία is a softness of the body, sickness, as in Matt 4:23 ("every disease and every ailment"); the Greek fears illness on the road where the Hebrew fears mishap. The same fear returns at 42:38 with the verb μαλακίζομαι. The Greek does not name Jacob as the subject of "did not send" (seeded, marked). Swete prints Βενιαμείν and μή ποτε in two words where Rahlfs prints Βενιαμιν and μήποτε; the sense is the same.

ἄρχων τῆς γῆς, "ruler of the land," for the Masoretic version's "the potentate over the land" (שַׁלִּיט, 135g); ἄρχων is the Greek's common word for such an officer (Matt 9:18; John 3:1), not ἡγεμών "governor" (151e). For "he was the seller of rations" (the hiphil of שָׁבַר, 135a) the Greek has a plain imperfect, οὗτος ἐπώλει, "this one was selling," with πωλέω "sell" (149e). ἐπὶ πρόσωπον ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν, "on face upon the land," is the Greek's regular rendering of "nostrils to the land."

The brothers come to buy βρώματα, "foods," plural, where the Masoretic version reads "rations of food."

κατανοῆσαι τὰ ἴχνη τῆς χώρας, "to consider the tracks of the country," where the Masoretic version reads "to see the bareness of the land" (עֶרְוַת הָאָרֶץ): the Hebrew means the land's nakedness, its unguarded places; the Greek reads its ἴχνη, the tracks and footprints by which it is entered and crossed (Rom 4:12; 1 Pet 2:21, "that you should follow in his tracks"). "Tracks" is held at 42:12, where the Greek has "the tracks of the land" and the verb "see." In 42:9 the dreams are those ὧν ἴδεν αὐτός, "that he himself had seen," where the Masoretic version reads "that he had dreamed of them"; ἴδεν is Swete's spelling of εἶδεν.

εἰρηνικοί ἐσμεν, "peaceable we are," where the Masoretic version reads "honest are we" (כֵּנִים, 135c): the Greek has the brothers plead that they are men of peace, not raiders, as Hamor calls Jacob's sons "peaceable" (34:21). The gloss is held through 42:19, 31, 33 and 34. οὐκ εἰσίν, "are not," is present where the Masoretic version reads "have not been."

νὴ τὴν ὑγίαν Φαραώ, "by the health of Pharaoh," where the Masoretic version reads "life of Pharaoh" (חֵי פַרְעֹה): the Greek swears by the king's health with the oath particle νή (1 Cor 15:31), the formula of Greek speech, where the Hebrew swears by his life. The Masoretic version keeps the oath's bare "if" (21), "if you go out from here," whose unspoken curse means they shall not; the Greek says it outright with the emphatic negative οὐ μή, "you shall not go out," so the two say the same thing and no negation is added. ἐὰν μὴ … ἔλθῃ, "unless … comes," is a clause for the Masoretic version's "except at the coming of." φανεῖσθε, "you shall appear," is the passive of φαίνω (147f), shown up for what you are, where the Masoretic version reads "you shall be proved." ὑγίαν is Swete's spelling (Rahlfs ὑγίειαν); the same oath returns at 42:16.

For "go, bring rations for the hunger of your houses" the Greek has βαδίσατε καὶ ἀπαγάγετε τὸν ἀγορασμὸν τῆς σιτοδοσίας ὑμῶν, "proceed and lead away the buying of your grain-dole": what they have bought of the grain allotted to them. The alignment seeds "the hunger of your houses" as lacking; it is marked after "your grain-dole," where "of your houses" stood, and the Greek's own words are marked as different (σιτοδοσία, the dole of grain, recurs at 42:33).

Swete prints ὑπερίδομεν, "we overlooked," where Rahlfs spells it ὑπερείδομεν and the Masoretic version reads "we saw": the Greek makes the guilt a looking past, a disregard of what they saw. κατεδέετο, "he was begging earnestly," is the imperfect of καταδέομαι, for "he begged favor." ἐπῆλθεν, "has come upon," for "has come to."

The Greek has τοῖς ὄνοις, "his donkeys," plural; οὗ κατέλυσαν, "where they lodged," for "at the lodging"; and ἴδεν τὸν δεσμὸν τοῦ ἀργυρίου αὐτοῦ, "he saw the bond of his silver," the thing that tied it, where the Masoretic version reads "his silver": δεσμός keeps its home gloss "bond" (Phil 1:7), as at 42:35, where the Masoretic version has "bundle" (צְרוֹר). λήμψεσθε, "you will take," a future, for "you would take"; and ἐπ᾽ ἐμὲ ἐγένετο πάντα ταῦτα, "on me all these things have come to be," for "on me have they all been." The Greek has no "and" before "Simeon," which is not marked (142a). ἀτεκνόω, "make childless," for "bereave," as at 43:14.

  30. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "and I will bring him to thee again" (KJV) / "and I will bring him back to you" (RSV)

    Ruling 2

κἀγώ is καί with ἐγώ, "and I"; its home gloss "I too" would add a sense the Greek does not have here, where it only opens the clause, and "and I" is printed (the Masoretic version reads "and I, I").

    Rulings 52, 143

ἀπόκτεινον, "kill," an imperative, where the Masoretic version reads "you may make die" (the hiphil of מוּת, 133e); ἀνάξω αὐτόν, "I will lead him up," for "I will return him."

  32. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 52, 53, 143

For "should harm meet him on the way … you would bring down" the Greek has two futures, συμβήσεται αὐτὸν μαλακισθῆναι, "it will befall him to be ailing," and κατάξετε, "you will bring down": the father speaks of what will happen, not of what may. μαλακίζομαι is the verb of μαλακία, "ailment" (42:4). τὸ γῆρας, "my old age," for "my grayness" (שֵׂיבָה); εἰς ᾅδου, "to Hades," where the Masoretic version reads "to Sheol," as at 37:35. ἀπέθανεν, "died," an aorist, for "is dead." Swete prints πορεύεσθε, where Rahlfs reads the subjunctive πορεύησθε; the sense is the same.
