1 And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them, "Grow and multiply, and fill the land ⸢and lord it over it⸣. 2 And the trembling of you and the fear shall be upon all the beasts of the land and upon all the birds of the sky and upon all the things moving upon the land and all the fish of the sea; under your hands I have given them. 3 And every creeper that is living shall be yours for eating; as vegetables of grass I have given you all things. 4 Except meat in blood of soul1 you shall not eat. 5 For indeed your blood of your souls I will seek out; from the hand of all the beasts I will seek out it; and from the hand of a human‸, a brother, I will seek out the soul of the human. 6 The one pouring out blood of a human,‸in return for his blood it shall be poured out;for in the icon of God I made2 the human.3

7 But you, grow and multiply, and fill the land and multiply upon the land." 8 And God said to Noah and to his sons with him, saying, 9 "I, look, I am making rise4 my covenant to you and to your seed after you, 10 and to every living soul‸ with you, from birds and from cattle, and to all the beasts of the land, ⸢as many as⸣ are with you, from all those that went out of the chest‸. 11 And I will make stand my covenant toward you, and all flesh shall not die further from the water of the flood, and there shall not be further a flood ⸢of water⸣ to ruin ⸢all⸣ the land." 12 And ⸢the Lord⸣ God said ⸢to Noah⸣, "This is the sign of the covenant that I am giving between me and you and between every living soul that is with you, for generations of age:

13 my bow I am setting in the cloud, and it shall be for a sign of covenant between me and the land. 14 And it shall be, when I cloud clouds upon the land, my bow shall be seen in the cloud, 15 and I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and between every living soul in all flesh; and the water shall not be further for a flood, so as to wipe out all flesh. 16 And my bow shall be in the cloud,‸ and I will see to remember a covenant of age between me and between every living soul in all flesh that is upon the land." 17 And God said to Noah, "This is the sign of the covenant which I have disposed5 between me and between all flesh that is upon the land." 18 Now the sons of Noah who went out of the chest were Shem, Ham, Japheth. Ham was the father of Canaan.

19 Three are these, the sons of Noah; from these they were dispersed upon all the land. 20 And Noah began, a human, a farmer6 of land, and planted a vineyard. 21 And he drank from the wine and was drunk, and he was made naked in‸ his house.7 22 And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and ⸢having gone out⸣ he announced it to his two brothers outside. 23 And Shem and Japheth, having taken the cloak, laid it on their two backs, and went facing backward and covered up the nakedness of their father; and their face was turned backward, and the nakedness of their father they did not see. 24 Now Noah sobered up from the wine, and came to know as many things as his younger son had done to him.

25 And he said,"Accursed is Canaan;a servant, a domestic8, he shall be to his brothers."

25 καὶ εἶπεν Ἐπικατάρατος Χανάαν· παῖς οἰκέτης ἔσται τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς αὐτοῦ.

26 And he said,"Blessed the Lord, the God of Shem;and Canaan shall be his servant9.

26 καὶ εἶπεν Εὐλογητὸς Κύριος ὁ θεὸς τοῦ Σήμ, καὶ ἔσται Χανάαν παῖς αὐτοῦ.

27 May God broaden for Japheth, and let him dwell in the houses of Shem;and let Canaan come to be their servant."

    Rulings 52, 138

κρέας ἐν αἵματι ψυχῆς, "meat in blood of soul," where the Masoretic version reads "flesh with its soul, its blood." The Greek has κρέας, meat as food, not σάρξ "flesh," and joins the two Hebrew words into one phrase, the blood that carries the soul (Lev 17:11, "the soul of the flesh is in its blood"). The apostolic decree keeps the prohibition in Greek dress: "abstain … from blood and from what is strangled" (Acts 15:20, 29).

  2. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 52, 54, 138

ἐποίησα, "I made," first person: God is still speaking, and says of himself what the Masoretic version says in the third person, "for in the icon of Elohim he made the human." The Greek also lacks "by the human" (בָּאָדָם, ‸) and reads ἀντὶ τοῦ αἵματος αὐτοῦ, "in return for his blood," where the Masoretic version reads "by the human his blood shall be spilled": in the Greek the penalty is a life for a life, and the agent who sheds the killer's blood is not named. Targum Onkelos reads the Hebrew's "by the human" as the court ("by witnesses, by sentence of the judges"), and b. Sanhedrin 57b as "a human within a human," the unborn child; the Greek has no such words.

    Rulings 81, 102

9:6 and Noah's words in 9:25–27 are lined as poetry, as the Masoretic version lines them (81b), with the same colons.

  4. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "I establish" (KJV, RSV) / "I am raising up" (NETS)

    Rulings 2, 20

ἀνίστημι, home gloss "rise," is transitive here, with "my covenant" as its object, as in "God raised him" (Acts 2:24, 32). The home gloss is kept and the transitive use is printed "make rise," as ἵστημι is "make stand" when transitive (6:18; 9:11), so that the two verbs stay apart: the Greek has "I am making rise my covenant" here and "I will make stand my covenant" two verses on, where the Masoretic version has the one verb הֵקִים "make stand" both times. Ruling 145(d) makes "rise" / "make rise" a split by construction, as ἵστημι is split.

  5. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 52, 138

διεθέμην, "I have disposed," the verb of which διαθήκη "covenant" is the noun: a covenant in Greek is a thing disposed, as a testator disposes his goods (Heb 9:16–17; Luke 22:29, "I dispose to you a kingdom, as my Father disposed to me"). The Masoretic version reads "that I have made stand."

  6. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 11, 52, 138

ἄνθρωπος γεωργὸς γῆς, "a human, a farmer of land," where the Masoretic version reads "a man of the ground" (אִישׁ הָאֲדָמָה). The Greek names Noah's work: γεωργός is the one who works the land (γῆ + ἔργον), the "farmer" of John 15:1 and 2 Tim 2:6. ἄνθρωπος keeps its home gloss "human" (11), since no woman stands in this verse or the next.

  7. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 54, 143

ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ αὐτοῦ, "in his house," where the Masoretic version reads "in the middle of his tent": the Greek lacks "the middle of" (בְּתוֹךְ), and the alignment does not set the lack, so it is marked (54). It also has οἶκος "house" for the Hebrew's "tent," marked as a difference of word (143).

  8. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 52, 77, 138

παῖς οἰκέτης, "a servant, a domestic," two nouns in apposition, where the Masoretic version reads "a slave of slaves," the superlative of עֶבֶד. The Greek gives Canaan the household servant's place, not the lowest place: οἰκέτης is the slave of a house (Luke 16:13; 1 Pet 2:18). παῖς is "servant" (77), δοῦλος "slave."

  9. Reading↩ Back to the text

    Rulings 52, 65, 138

The blessing Εὐλογητὸς κύριος, "Blessed the Lord," has no verb and is printed without one (65; 125l). ἔσται Χανάαν παῖς αὐτοῦ, "Canaan shall be his servant": future, not a wish, and "his," singular, where the Masoretic version reads "let Canaan be a slave to them." The "his" can be Shem's or the Lord's. In 9:27 the Greek has "their servant," with the Masoretic version.

It binds ζωὴ αἰώνιος, "life of age" (Matt 19:16; John 3:16), where the expected English is "eternal" or "everlasting"; D. B. Hart prints "of the Age." Whether the word means unending duration or belonging to the age to come is a doctrinal question (Matt 25:46), and the gloss leaves it open (guide §1.4; 46, 93)
