1 And it was at the end of two years of days1, and Pharaoh was dreaming, and look, he was standing by the Nile.
1 Now it came to be after two years of days: Pharaoh saw a dream. He supposed he was standing by the river,1
1 Two full years later, Pharaoh had a dream. In it he was standing by the Nile.

2 And look, from the Nile were going up seven cows, beautiful of sight and plump of flesh; and they pastured2 in the reed-grass.
2 and look, just like from the river were going up seven cows, beautiful in figure and chosen in flesh, and they grazed in the reed-grass;2
2 Seven cows came up out of the Nile. They were beautiful and fat, and they grazed in the reeds.

3 And look, seven other cows were going up after them from the Nile, bad of sight and thin of flesh; and they stood beside the cows on the lip of the Nile.
3 ‸but another seven cows were going up after them from the river, ugly in figure and thin in flesh; and the cows pastured beside the lip of the river in the reed-grass;3
3 Then seven other cows came up out of the Nile after them. They were ugly and thin. They stood beside the first cows on the bank of the Nile.

4 And the cows, bad of the sight and thin of the flesh, ate the seven cows, the beautiful of the sight and the plump. And Pharaoh awoke.
4 and the seven cows, the ugly‸ and thin in the flesh, devoured the seven cows, the beautiful in the figure and the chosen. Now Pharaoh woke.
4 The ugly, thin cows ate up the seven beautiful, fat cows. Then Pharaoh woke up.

5 And he slept and dreamed a second time; and look, seven ears3 were going up on one stalk, plump and good.
5 ‸And he dreamed a second time; and look, seven ears were going up on one stock, chosen and beautiful;4
5 He fell asleep again and had a second dream. Seven heads of grain were growing on one stalk. They were fat and good.

6 And look, seven ears, thin and scorched by the easterly4, were springing up after them.
6 but another‸ seven ears, thin and wind-blasted, were shooting up after them;5
6 Then seven heads of grain sprouted after them. They were thin and dried up by the east wind.

7 And the thin ears swallowed the seven ears, the plump and the full. And Pharaoh awoke, and look: a dream.
7 and the seven ears, the thin and wind-blasted, swallowed the seven ears, the chosen and the full. Now Pharaoh woke, and it was a dream.
7 The thin heads of grain swallowed up the seven fat, full heads. Then Pharaoh woke up. It had been a dream.

8 And it was in the morning, and his spirit was agitated; and he sent and called all the magicians5 of Egypt and all its wise ones. And Pharaoh recounted to them his dream, and there was none interpreting them6 for Pharaoh.
8 Now it came to be morning, and his soul was troubled; and sending, he called all the expounders of Egypt and all its wise ones. And Pharaoh related the dream to them, and there was none reporting it to Pharaoh.6
8 In the morning his spirit was troubled. So he sent for all the magicians of Egypt and all its wise men. Pharaoh told them his dream, but no one could interpret the dreams for Pharaoh.

9 And the officer of the cupbearers7 spoke with Pharaoh, saying, "My sins I am making remembered8 this day.
9 Then the chief cupbearer spoke to Pharaoh. He said, "Today I am bringing up my sins.

10 Pharaoh was wrathful against his servants, and he gave me into custody in the house of the officer of the butchers, me and the officer of the bakers.
10 Pharaoh was angry against his servants, and he set us in custody in the house of the chief jailer, both me and the chief baker.8
10 Pharaoh was angry with his servants. He put me and the chief baker in custody in the house of the chief of the butchers.

11 And we dreamed a dream in one night, I and he; each man according to the interpretation of his dream we dreamed.
11 And we saw a dream in one night, I and he; each according to his own dream we saw.9
11 One night we both had dreams, he and I. Each of us had a dream with its own interpretation.

12 And there with us was a Hebrew lad, a slave to the officer of the butchers; and we recounted to him, and he interpreted for us our dreams; to each man according to his dream he interpreted.
12 Now there with us was a young man, a Hebrew servant of the chief cook; and we related to him, and he interpreted for us‸.10
12 A young Hebrew was there with us. He was a slave of the chief of the butchers. We told him our dreams, and he interpreted them for us. He gave each of us the meaning of his own dream.

13 And it was: as he interpreted for us, thus it was. Me he returned to my base, and him he hanged9."
13 Now it came to be: just as he interpreted for us, thus also it befell: that I was restored to my rule, but that he was hanged."11
13 It turned out just as he had said. I was put back in my place, and the baker was hanged."

14 And Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they made him run from the pit; and he shaved10 and changed his cloaks, and came to Pharaoh.
14 Now Pharaoh, sending, called Joseph, and he brought him out from the stronghold; and they shaved him and changed his robe, and he came to Pharaoh.12
14 So Pharaoh sent for Joseph, and they rushed him out of the prison pit. He shaved and changed his clothes, and he came in to Pharaoh.

15 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, "A dream I have dreamed, and one interpreting it there is none; and I have heard about you, saying, 'You hear a dream to interpret it.'"
15 Now Pharaoh said to Joseph, "A dream I have seen, and one interpreting it there is none; but I have heard about you, people saying that, hearing dreams, you interpret them."
15 Pharaoh said to Joseph, "I had a dream, and no one can interpret it. But I have heard people say this about you: when you hear a dream, you can interpret it."

16 Now Joseph, answering Pharaoh, said, "Apart from God the salvation of Pharaoh shall not be answered."13
16 Joseph answered Pharaoh, "It is not in me. God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace."

17 And Pharaoh spoke to Joseph: "In my dream, look, I was standing on the lip of the Nile12.
17 Now Pharaoh spoke to Joseph, saying, "In my sleep I supposed I was standing on the lip of the river;
17 Then Pharaoh told Joseph, "In my dream I was standing on the bank of the Nile.

18 And look, from the Nile were going up seven cows, plump of flesh and beautiful of form; and they pastured2 in the reed-grass.
18 and just like from the river were going up seven cows, beautiful in figure and chosen in flesh, and they pastured in the reed-grass;

19 And look, seven other cows were going up after them, poor and very bad of form and gaunt of flesh. I have not seen the like of them in all the land of Egypt for badness.
19 and look, seven other cows were going up after them from the river, evil and ugly in figure‸ and thin in flesh, and they pastured in the reed-grass; of a sort I have not seen such in the whole‸ of Egypt, uglier;14
19 Then seven other cows came up after them. They were weak and very ugly and thin. I have never seen cows so ugly in all the land of Egypt.

20 And the cows, the gaunt and the bad, ate the seven first cows, the plump.
20 and the seven cows, the ugly and thin, devoured the seven first cows, the beautiful and chosen;
20 The thin, ugly cows ate up the first seven cows, the fat ones.

21 And they came into their inward part, and it was not known that they had come into their inward part; and their sight was bad, as at the start. And I awoke.
21 and they entered into their bellies, and they did not come to be evident, that they had entered into their bellies; and their appearances were ugly, even as also at the beginning. Now, having woken up, I fell asleep;15
21 The fat cows went down into the thin cows' bellies, but no one could tell that they had gone in. The thin cows looked just as ugly as they did at the start. Then I woke up.

22 And I saw in my dream, and look, seven ears were going up on one stalk, full and good.
22 and I saw again in my sleep, and just like seven ears were going up on one stock, full and beautiful;
22 Then in my dream I saw seven heads of grain growing on one stalk. They were full and good.

23 but another‸ seven ears,‸ thin and wind-blasted, were shooting up holding close to them;16
23 Then seven heads of grain sprouted after them. They were shriveled and thin, dried up by the east wind.

24 And the thin ears swallowed the seven good ears. And I said to the magicians, and there was none telling me."
24 and the seven ears, the thin and wind-blasted, swallowed the seven beautiful ears and the full. Therefore I said to the expounders, and there was none reporting to me."
24 The thin heads swallowed up the seven good heads. I told this to the magicians, but no one could explain it to me."

25 And Joseph said to Pharaoh, "The dream of Pharaoh is one: what the Elohim14 is doing he has told to Pharaoh.
25 Then Joseph said to Pharaoh, "Pharaoh's dream is one dream. God has told Pharaoh what he is about to do.

26 The seven good cows: seven years are they; and the seven good ears: seven years are they. One dream it is.
26 The seven good cows are seven years. The seven good heads of grain are seven years. It is one dream.

27 And the seven cows, the gaunt and the bad, that were going up after them: seven years are they; and the seven ears, the empty15, scorched by the easterly, shall be seven years of hunger.
27 And the seven cows, the thin‸, that are going up after them: seven years are they; and the seven ears, the thin and wind-blasted: they shall be seven years of famine.
27 The seven thin, ugly cows that came up after them are seven years. And the seven empty heads of grain, dried up by the east wind, will be seven years of famine.

28 That is the word that I have spoken to Pharaoh: what the Elohim is doing he has made Pharaoh see.
28 Now the word that I have said to Pharaoh: as many things as God is doing, he has shown to Pharaoh.
28 It is just as I told Pharaoh. God has shown Pharaoh what he is about to do.

29 Look, seven years are coming, great satiety in all the land of Egypt.
29 Look, seven years are coming, much plenty in all the land of Egypt;
29 Seven years are coming with great plenty in all the land of Egypt.

30 And there shall rise seven years of hunger after them, and all the satiety in the land of Egypt shall be forgotten; and the hunger shall finish the land.
30 but seven years of famine shall arrive after these, and‸ they shall forget17 the satiety in the whole land of Egypt, and the famine shall consume the land;
30 After them will come seven years of famine. All the plenty in the land of Egypt will be forgotten, and the famine will ruin the land.

31 And the satiety shall not be known in the land from the face of that hunger after that, for it is very heavy.
31 and the plenty shall not be recognized in the land from the famine that shall be after these, for it shall be very strong.
31 No one will even know there was plenty in the land, because of the famine that comes after it, for that famine will be very severe.

32 And as for the dream being repeated16 to Pharaoh two turns: it is because the word is fixed from the Elohim, and the Elohim is hurrying to do it.
32 Now as for the dream repeating to Pharaoh twice: it is because the word from God shall be true, and God will be quick to do it.18
32 The dream was given to Pharaoh twice because the matter is firmly settled by God, and God will soon do it.

33 And now, let Pharaoh see17 a man discerning and wise, and set him over the land of Egypt.
33 Now therefore, look out for‸ a human prudent and discerning, and appoint him over the land of Egypt;19
33 So now, Pharaoh should look for a man who is discerning and wise. He should put him in charge of the land of Egypt.

34 Let Pharaoh do it, and let him appoint18 appointees over the land, and fifth19 the land of Egypt in the seven years of the satiety.
34 and let Pharaoh do it, and let him appoint toparchs over the land, and let them take a fifth of all the produce of the land of Egypt of the seven years of the plenty;20
34 Pharaoh should do this. He should appoint officials over the land. During the seven years of plenty, he should take a fifth from the land of Egypt.

35 And let them collect all the food of these good years that are coming, and amass corn under the hand of Pharaoh, food in the cities, and let them keep it.
35 and let them gather all the food of these seven beautiful years that are coming; and let the grain be gathered under the hand of Pharaoh, food in the cities; let it be gathered.21
35 Let them gather all the food of these good years that are coming. Under Pharaoh's control, let them store up grain as food in the cities, and let them guard it.

36 And the food shall be for a deposit for the land, for the seven years of the hunger that shall be in the land of Egypt; and the land shall not be cut off in the hunger."
36 And the food shall be guarded for the land, for the seven years of the famine that shall be in the land of Egypt; and the land shall not be rubbed out in the famine."
36 This food will be kept in trust for the land. It will be for the seven years of famine that will come in the land of Egypt. Then the land will not be wiped out by the famine."

37 And the word was well in the eyes of Pharaoh and in the eyes of all his servants.
37 Now the words pleased before Pharaoh and before all his servants.
37 The plan seemed good to Pharaoh and to all his servants.

38 And Pharaoh said to his servants, "Can we find one like this, a man in whom is the spirit of Elohim20?"
38 And Pharaoh said to all his servants, "We shall not find such a human, shall we, who has a spirit of God in him?"22
38 Pharaoh said to his servants, "Can we find anyone like this, a man who has the spirit of God in him?"

38 καὶ εἶπεν Φαραὼ πᾶσιν τοῖς παισὶν αὐτοῦ Μὴ εὑρήσομεν ἄνθρωπον τοιοῦτον, ὃς ἔχει πνεῦμα θεοῦ ἐν αὐτῷ;

39 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, "After Elohim has made you know all this, there is none discerning and wise as you.
39 Now Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Inasmuch as God has shown you all these things, there is no human more prudent than you and more discerning.
39 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Now that God has made all this known to you, there is no one as discerning and wise as you.

40 You, you shall be over my house, and at your mouth shall all my people kiss21; solely as to the throne shall I be greater than you."
40 You, you shall be over my house, and at your mouth shall all my people obey; except as to the throne I shall surpass you."23
40 You will be in charge of my house, and all my people will do homage at your word. Only on the throne will I be greater than you."

41 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, "See, I have given you over all the land of Egypt."
41 Now Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Look, I appoint you today over all the land of Egypt."
41 Pharaoh said to Joseph, "See, I have put you in charge of all the land of Egypt."

42 And Pharaoh removed his ring from on his hand and gave it on the hand of Joseph; and he clothed him in garments of fine linen, and put the necklace of gold on his neck22.
42 And Pharaoh, taking off the ring from his hand, put it around on the hand of Joseph; and he clothed him in a robe of fine linen, and put around his neck a collar of gold;24
42 Pharaoh took his ring off his hand and put it on Joseph's hand. He dressed Joseph in robes of fine linen and put the gold necklace around his neck.

43 And he made him ride in the chariot of the double23 that was his, and they called before his face, "Abrech24!" And giving him over all the land of Egypt.
43 and he hauled him up onto the chariot, the second of his own, and before him a herald proclaimed; and he appointed him over the whole land of Egypt.25
43 He had Joseph ride in his second chariot, and men called out ahead of him, "Abrech!" So Pharaoh put him in charge of all the land of Egypt.

44 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, "I am Pharaoh, and apart from you no man shall make high his hand and his foot in all the land of Egypt."
44 Now Pharaoh said to Joseph, "I am Pharaoh; apart from you no one shall lift away his hand‸ in all the land of Egypt."26
44 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, "I am Pharaoh, and without you no one in all the land of Egypt will lift a hand or a foot."

45 And Pharaoh called the name of Joseph Zaphenath-paneah25, and he gave him Asenath, daughter of Potiphera, priest of On, for a woman. And Joseph went out over the land of Egypt.
45 And Pharaoh called the name of Joseph Psonthomphanech27; and he gave him Asenath, daughter of Potiphera28, priest of the City of the Sun29, to him for a woman.‸30
45 Pharaoh gave Joseph the name Zaphenath-paneah. He gave him Asenath to be his wife. She was the daughter of Potiphera, the priest of On. And Joseph went out over the land of Egypt.

46 And Joseph was a son of thirty years when he stood before the face of Pharaoh, king of Egypt26. And Joseph went out from before the face of Pharaoh and passed over through all the land of Egypt.
46 Joseph was 30 years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. Then Joseph left Pharaoh and went all through the land of Egypt.

47 And the land made, in the seven years of the satiety, by handfuls.
47 And the land made, in the seven years of the plenty, sheaves.
47 During the seven years of plenty, the land produced crops in abundance, by the handful.

48 And he collected all the food of the seven years27 that were in the land of Egypt, and gave food in the cities: the food of the field of the city, which was around it, he gave in its middle.
48 And he gathered all the food of the seven years in which the plenty was in the land of Egypt, and set the food in the cities: the food of the plains of the city, of those round about it, On, he set in it.32
48 Joseph gathered all the food of the seven years in the land of Egypt and stored it in the cities. In each city he stored the food from the fields around it.

49 And Joseph gathered grain as it were the sand of the sea, very much, until he was not able to number, for number there was none.
49 Joseph stored up grain like the sand of the sea. There was so much that he stopped counting, because it could not be counted.

50 And to Joseph were born two sons before the year of the hunger came, whom Asenath, daughter of Potiphera, priest of On, bore to him.
50 Now to Joseph there came to be two sons before the seven years of the famine came, whom Asenath, daughter of Potiphera28, priest of the City of the Sun, bore to him.
50 Before the famine came, two sons were born to Joseph. Their mother was Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, the priest of On.

51 And Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh28: for Elohim has made me oblivious of all my travail and all the house of my father.
51 Now Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh, saying, "For God has made me forget all my pains and all those‸ of my father."33
51 Joseph named his firstborn son Manasseh, saying, "God has made me forget all my troubles and all my father's household."

52 And the name of the second he called Ephraim29: for Elohim has made me bear fruit in the land of my affliction.
52 Now the name of the second he called Ephraim: for God has exalted me in the land of my humiliation.34
52 He named the second son Ephraim, saying, "God has made me fruitful in the land where I suffered."

53 And the seven years of the satiety that was in the land of Egypt were finished.
53 Now the seven years of the plenty that came to be in the land of Egypt passed by,
53 The seven years of plenty in the land of Egypt came to an end.

54 And the seven years of the hunger began to come, as Joseph had said. And there was hunger in all the lands, and in all the land of Egypt there was bread.
54 and the seven years of the famine began to come, even as Joseph had said. And there came to be famine in all the land; but in all the land of Egypt there were no loaves.35
54 Then the seven years of famine began, just as Joseph had said. There was famine in all the lands, but in all the land of Egypt there was bread.

55 And all the land of Egypt hungered, and the people cried out to Pharaoh for bread. And Pharaoh said to all Egypt30, "Go to Joseph; what he says to you, do."
55 And all the land of Egypt hungered; now all the people cried out to Pharaoh for loaves. Now Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians, "Go to Joseph, and whatever he says to you, do."36
55 When all the land of Egypt went hungry, the people cried out to Pharaoh for bread. Pharaoh told all the Egyptians, "Go to Joseph. Do whatever he tells you."

56 And the hunger was over all the face of the land. And Joseph opened all that was in them31, and let Egypt30 buy rations32; and the hunger was strong in the land of Egypt.
56 And the famine was over the face of all the land. Now Joseph opened all the granaries, and was selling to all the Egyptians.‸37
56 The famine was over the whole land. Joseph opened up everything that was stored and sold grain to the Egyptians. And the famine grew severe in the land of Egypt.

57 And all the land33 came to Egypt to buy rations, to Joseph; for the hunger was strong in all the land.
57 And all the countries came to Egypt to buy, to Joseph; for the famine prevailed in all the land.38
57 People from every land came to Egypt to buy grain from Joseph, because the famine was severe in every land.

    Rulings 91, 10

שְׁנָתַיִם יָמִים is the dual "two years" with "days" set beside it: two full years, to the day, as "two years of days" in 2 Sam 13:23 and 14:28 and Jer 28:3, 11. The count runs from Pharaoh's birthday, when the officer of the waterers went back to his post and forgot Joseph (40:20–23). The weekly Torah reading מִקֵּץ (Miqqets) takes its name from the verse's second word, "at the end of."

  2. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "fed" (KJV) / "fed" (RSV)

    Rulings 2, 57

The verb is רָעָה, whose home gloss "shepherd (v.)" is the herdsman's work (4:2; 30:36; 37:12–16). With the beasts themselves as subject it is their grazing: "cow and bear shall pasture" (Isa 11:7), "the she-asses pasturing beside them" (Job 1:14), "lambs shall pasture" (Isa 5:17). "They shepherded" would make the cows herdsmen, a false sense in English (57), so "pastured" is printed here and in the retelling at v. 18. The verb is the one the brothers do at Shechem in 37:12–16.

    Rulings 17, 116

שִׁבֹּלֶת is the ear of grain (Ruth 2:2), and in a homograph the flowing stream: "the שִׁבֹּלֶת has swept over me" (Ps 69:3, 16; Isa 27:12). At the fords of the Jordan the Gileadites made the Ephraimites say the word, and killed those who said "sibboleth" (Judg 12:6). The English "ear" of grain is a different word from the "ear" that hears (אֹזֶן), only spelled the same.

    Rulings 2, 25

קָדִים is the east, and by itself the east wind, the hot dry wind off the desert. It withers the vine (Ezek 17:10; 19:12) and Jonah's plant (Jon 4:8), breaks the ships of Tarshish (Ps 48:8), brings the locusts (Exod 10:13), and parts the sea (Exod 14:21). "Easterly," the wind named by its quarter, keeps one English word for the one Hebrew word. "East" is קֶדֶם's (2:8). שָׁדַף "scorch" is the same wind's work on grain in 2 Kgs 19:26, "grain scorched before it stands up."

    Rulings 25, 18

חַרְטֹם is an Egyptian title in Hebrew dress, from ḥry-tp, "chief," short for the chief lector-priest, the temple scholar who read the sacred books and the spells; Papyrus Westcar tells of wonders worked by such priests. The Bible uses the word only for the experts of Egypt (here, v. 24; Exod 7:11, 22; 8:3, 14–15; 9:11) and of Babylon (Dan 1:20; 2:2). The LXX has ἐξηγητάς, "expounders," here and at v. 24, and ἐπαοιδούς, "enchanters," in Exodus. "Magicians" names what the Hebrew uses the loanword for: learned men with spells, set beside "its wise ones."

    Ruling 74

אוֹתָם "them" is plural, though Pharaoh recounted "his dream" in the singular: the narrator counts two dreams where Joseph will say "the dream is one" (vv. 25–26). Genesis Rabbah 89:6, followed by Rashi, puts the weight on "for Pharaoh": the wise ones did interpret, "seven daughters you will father, seven daughters you will bury," but nothing they said reached Pharaoh.

  7. Decision↩ Back to the text

Expected: "the chief butler" (KJV) / "the chief butler" (RSV)

    Rulings 2, 10

מַשְׁקֶה is the hiphil participle of שָׁקָה "give drink": the one who pours the king's wine and puts the cup in his palm (40:11, 13, 21; Neh 1:11). The home gloss "watering" is the watered land (13:10); of a person it is "cupbearer," as through Gen 40. "Butler" names a steward of the household, which was not his office.

    Rulings 20, 2

מַזְכִּיר is the hiphil of זָכַר "remember": to make a thing remembered, to bring it up aloud. Joseph had asked this man for the same stem, וְהִזְכַּרְתַּנִי אֶל־פַּרְעֹה, "make me remembered to Pharaoh" (40:14), and he "did not remember Joseph, and forgot him" (40:23). Two years late, the first thing he makes remembered is his own sins. חֲטָאַי is plural: the offence of 40:1 (חָטְאוּ), and, as he tells it, perhaps the forgetting too.

The subject of "returned" and "hanged" is not named. It is Pharaoh, who acts in 40:21–22, and Rashi says so; but the sentence follows "as he interpreted for us," and the courtier's grammar lets the interpreter's word seem to do what the king did. b. Berakhot 55b draws from "as he interpreted for us, thus it was" that "all dreams follow the mouth." English "he" keeps both. כַּנִּי "my base" is the post of 40:13, "Pharaoh will return you to your base."

Egyptian men of rank went clean-shaven, and a prisoner was made fit for the court. The piel of גָּלַח is used of the head (Num 6:9; Judg 16:19) as well as the beard, and the verse does not say which. "The pit" is the prison-house of 39:20, called by the word for the dry cistern of 37:24, as Joseph called it at 40:15.

    Rulings 2, 40

בִּלְעָדַי is one word, "apart from me," with no verb: Joseph refuses the credit Pharaoh has just handed him. The same word is Abram's answer to the king of Sodom, "Apart from me!" (14:24): nothing for me. The KJV and RSV supply "It is not in me," and Onkelos "Not from my wisdom, but from before the LORD the peace of Pharaoh will be answered." The LXX reads another sentence: Ἄνευ τοῦ θεοῦ οὐκ ἀποκριθήσεται τὸ σωτήριον Φαραω, "Without God the welfare of Pharaoh will not be answered," which moves "apart" onto God and supplies a negative. The exclamation keeps the denial that the Hebrew carries in one word. עָנָה with an object is to answer to a thing: Elohim will answer to Pharaoh's peace, his welfare, which the dream has shaken. Elohim has the singular verb יַעֲנֶה (9).

Pharaoh retells the dreams (vv. 17–24), and the English varies only where the Hebrew varies (6). He stands "on the lip of the Nile" (v. 1, "by the Nile"). The fat cows are "plump of flesh and beautiful of form" (v. 2, "beautiful of sight and plump of flesh"). The lean cows are "poor and very bad of form and gaunt of flesh" (v. 3, "bad of sight and thin of flesh"), and he adds, "I have not seen the like of them in all the land of Egypt for badness." He adds what the narrator did not say: the eaten cows vanished inside them, and the eaters looked as bad as before (v. 21). The ears are "full and good" (v. 5, "plump and good"), the thin ears are also "shrivelled" (v. 23), and the swallowed ears are only "the good" (v. 24; v. 7, "the plump and the full"). He also tells Joseph that the magicians failed. Pharaoh's version is more frightened and more personal than the narrator's.

צְנֻמוֹת occurs only here, and only in Pharaoh's telling; the narrator's v. 6 lacks it. Its sense is taken from the Aramaic and later Hebrew root צנם, "shrink, harden." The KJV and RSV have "withered."

Joseph says הָאֱלֹהִים, with the article and a singular participle, "the Elohim" (as 20:6, 17; 123c), here and in vv. 28 and 32: before the Egyptian king he names his own Elohim as the one Elohim. In v. 16 he had said Elohim without the article.

Joseph calls the ears "empty," רֵקוֹת, where both tellings had "thin" (vv. 6–7, 23–24). The word nearly repeats the cows' רַקּוֹת "gaunt" earlier in the same verse, so that the two dreams sound alike in his mouth. The two are different words, and the English keeps them apart (6). רֵק is the empty pit of 37:24. The verse also turns from "seven years are they" to "shall be seven years of hunger": the first half explains a picture, the second foretells.

הִשָּׁנוֹת is the niphal infinitive of שָׁנָה "repeat, do a second time," the root of שֵׁנִי "second" and שְׁנַיִם "two." פַּעֲמַיִם is the dual of פַּעַם "turn" (97): "two turns." נָכוֹן, the niphal of כּוּן, is what stands fixed: "the mountain of the house of Adonai shall be fixed" (Isa 2:2); "until the day is fixed," full noon (Prov 4:18). Joseph's rule is that a thing shown twice is settled. His own dreams also came in a pair (37:5–9), as the officers' did (40:5).

יֵרֶא "let him see" is to look out and choose: "Elohim will see for himself the sheep" (22:8); "I have seen for myself a king among his sons" (1 Sam 16:1). The home gloss "see" carries the choosing.

    Rulings 20, 123, 6

וְיַפְקֵד is the hiphil of פָּקַד, whose qal is "attend to" (21:1; 50:24–25). Ruling 123(b) gives the hiphil "appoint," a split by stem; it is the stem of 39:4–5 (וַיַּפְקִדֵהוּ), where Joseph was set over Potiphar's house. Its object here is its own noun, פְּקִדִים, the men appointed, printed "appointees" so that the doubled root shows (6). The Persian court repeats the sentence: "let the king appoint appointees" (Esth 2:3).

Expected: "take up the fifth part of" (KJV) / "take the fifth part of" (RSV)

    Rulings 10, 1, 25

חִמֵּשׁ is a verb made from חָמֵשׁ "five," and is found only here: "let him fifth the land." 47:24–26 tells how it was done, a fifth of the harvest to Pharaoh as a statute. Verbs stay verbs (10), so the English makes "fifth" a verb, as English made "tithe" from "tenth" (28:22, the piel of עָשַׂר). The passive participle of the same letters, חֲמֻשִׁים, describes Israel leaving Egypt "in battle array" (Exod 13:18; Josh 1:14; 4:12), and on that model some read the verb here as "let him put the land in order." The LXX (ἀποπεμπτωσάτωσαν) and the Vulgate (quintam partem) read the number, and the story's sequel confirms it (1).

Expected: "the Spirit of God" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 107, 128, 38, 123

Here אֱלֹהִים has no agreeing verb, and the speaker is a foreigner. For a foreigner, 123(c) keeps a bare אֱלֹהִים lowercase (20:11), and 128(d) raises it to a capital only where Adonai is named in the scene; Adonai is not named in Gen 41. But Joseph has named Elohim five times in the scene with singular agreement (vv. 16, 25, 28, 32 twice), and in the next verse Pharaoh himself says "Elohim has made you know," with a singular verb. So "the spirit of Elohim" in Pharaoh's mouth refers to the Elohim Joseph has named, and the capital is printed by reference within the scene, as 107 and 128(d) do. The other reading is "a spirit of gods," Pharaoh speaking as a polytheist. Nebuchadnezzar says just that of Daniel in Aramaic, "a spirit of holy gods is in him" (Dan 4:5–6, 15; 5:11, 14). Onkelos has "a spirit of prophecy from before the LORD." "Spirit" is lowercase under 31: it is the spirit that Elohim possesses.

Expected: "according unto thy word shall all my people be ruled" (KJV) / "all my people shall order themselves as you command" (RSV)

    Rulings 1, 46, 2

The verb is נָשַׁק "kiss," the verb of 27:26–27, 29:11 and 33:4. "At your mouth" (עַל־פִּיךָ) is the idiom of command, "at the mouth of Adonai" (Num 3:16; Deut 34:5). A kiss is homage: Samuel kisses Saul when he anoints him (1 Sam 10:1); "kiss the son" (Ps 2:12); "every mouth that has not kissed" Baal (1 Kgs 19:18). Read so, all the people will do homage at Joseph's word. Others take a second root, "be armed, be marshalled" (נֶשֶׁק "weapons"; "armed with the bow," 1 Chr 12:2; Ps 78:9): the people will be marshalled at his command. Rashi reads "be sustained," from מֶשֶׁק, the stewardship of 15:2: by your word all my people will be provided for. The LXX ὑπακούσεται and the Vulgate oboediet give the sense, "obey." "Kiss" prints the verb's own sense; "at your mouth" carries the command, and no reading is shut out (1).

The ring is the seal-ring that stamps the king's orders (Esth 3:10; 8:2, 8), the king's authority in Joseph's hand. שֵׁשׁ "fine linen" is an Egyptian word, šs, for the royal linen. The gold necklace is the "gold of honour" that Egyptian kings hung on the officials they rewarded, a gift often shown in New Kingdom tomb paintings. The investiture is told in the court's own terms.

Expected: "the second chariot which he had" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 2, 3

מִשְׁנֶה is the second of a pair or the double of a thing: "double silver" (43:12, 15), a double portion of bread (Exod 16:5, 22), "a double of this Torah" (Deut 17:18, whence the LXX's Δευτερονόμιον). Of a man it is the one next to the king: Elkanah "the double of the king" (2 Chr 28:7), Mordecai "double to king Ahasuerus" (Esth 10:3), Jonathan to David, "I shall be to you for a double" (1 Sam 23:17). "The chariot of the double that was his" may be Pharaoh's own second chariot, or the chariot of Pharaoh's second, the man now riding in it; the English keeps both. "Second" is the home gloss of שֵׁנִי (v. 5).

Expected: "Bow the knee" (KJV, RSV)

    Rulings 133, 25, 1, 46

אַבְרֵךְ occurs only here, called out before Joseph's chariot. Its meaning is not recovered, so it is transliterated (133d), with the readings here. (a) Hebrew: a form of בָּרַךְ "kneel," a call to kneel, though the form fits no regular stem (the hiphil is "make kneel," 125a). So the Vulgate, clamante praecone ut omnes coram eo genu flecterent, "a herald crying that all should bend the knee before him," and the KJV and RSV. (b) Egyptian: a call such as "Attention!" or "Make way!", which the context suits, since Hebrew reproduces Egyptian words throughout this chapter. (c) Akkadian abarakku, a high steward of a royal house: a title, "Grand Steward!" (d) The rabbis read two words. In Sifre Deuteronomy 1, R. Judah takes it as אָב "father" in wisdom and רַךְ "tender" in years, and R. Yose ben Durmaskit answers that it can only mean knees. Onkelos has "This is father to the king," and Rashi cites both. The LXX has "and a herald proclaimed before him," and leaves the word itself out. The WPRB keeps the transliteration too, since every English choice would settle the crux.

The new names are Egyptian. They are printed in their familiar English forms, with their forms and meanings in the names table. Zaphenath-paneah is most likely Egyptian for "the god speaks and he lives." Onkelos reads it in Hebrew as "the man to whom hidden things are revealed," and Josephus as "finder of secrets," from צָפַן "hide." The LXX has Ψονθομφανηχ. Asenath is "she belongs to Neith." Potiphera is "he whom Ra gave," the fuller form of Potiphar (37:36; 39:1). On is Heliopolis, the city of the sun (LXX Ἡλιουπόλεως), the seat of Ra. The king renames Joseph and marries him into the priesthood of the sun, and the narrator does not comment.

מְנַשֶּׁה "Manasseh" is explained by נַשַּׁנִי, "he has made me oblivious," from נָשָׁה, a rarer verb of forgetting than שָׁכַח (40:23; 41:30). The name is a participle, "one who makes oblivious." English has no pun that keeps "Manasseh" and the gloss, so the pun stays in this note (17). The verse says that Elohim made Joseph oblivious of his travail and of his father's house, the house that sold him (37:27–28). The next chapter tests it: when the brothers bow before him, "Joseph remembered the dreams" (42:9).

אֶפְרַיִם "Ephraim" is explained by הִפְרַנִי, "he has made me bear fruit," the hiphil of פָּרָה, the verb of the blessing "bear fruit and be many" (1:22, 28; 35:11). The name ends like a dual, and was heard as "double fruit." English cannot carry the name and the verb together (17). "The land of my affliction" uses עֳנִי, the word of Hagar (16:11) and of Leah (29:32), and Egypt is the land where Abram's seed would be afflicted (15:13).

II is a verb made from the noun שֶׁבֶר, grain doled out as rations (42:1–2). Its qal is the buyer's verb: "to buy rations" (v. 57; 42:2–3). Here the form is qal and the subject is Joseph, the seller; the hiphil, the seller's stem, comes at 42:6 (הַמַּשְׁבִּיר). The LXX (ἐπώλει) and the Vulgate (vendebat) read "sold." "Let Egypt buy rations" keeps the qal's gloss and gives Joseph the seller's part, without taking "sell," which is מָכַר's (37:28, 36). The verb is a homograph of שָׁבַר "break" (19:9).

μετὰ δύο ἔτη ἡμερῶν, "after two years of days," for the Masoretic version's "at the end of two years of days." Φαραὼ ἴδεν ἐνύπνιον, "Pharaoh saw a dream" (Swete's ἴδεν, Alexandrinus' spelling of εἶδεν), for "Pharaoh was dreaming"; and ᾤετο, "he supposed," for "and look," as at 37:7 and 40:16. ποταμός, "river," stands throughout the dreams for the Masoretic version's "Nile" (יְאֹר).

The Greek has both ἰδού, "look," and ὥσπερ, "just like" (seeded), so that what rises from the river is seen as a likeness. αἱ βόες are feminine, "cows," as the Masoretic version has them (152b). καλαὶ τῷ εἴδει, "beautiful in figure," with εἶδος's settled "figure" (150a), for "beautiful of sight," and ἐκλεκταὶ ταῖς σαρξίν, "chosen in flesh," for "plump of flesh." ἄχει is ἄχι, the Egyptian word for the marsh grass of the Nile that the Hebrew borrows as אָחוּ: the Greek keeps the loan as the Hebrew does, and it prints "reed-grass," the Masoretic version's English for the same word (145f, 57); Isa 19:7 and Sir 40:16 have it again.

Swete prints from Alexandrinus καὶ ἐνέμοντο αἱ βόες παρὰ τὸ χεῖλος τοῦ ποταμοῦ ἐν τῷ ἄχει, "and the cows pastured beside the lip of the river in the reed-grass," where the Masoretic version reads "and they stood beside the cows on the lip of the Nile" and Rahlfs reads differently (the alignment cannot pair "the cows" or "in the reed-grass"): in Swete's text the lean cattle do not stand beside the fat but graze like them, and "in the reed-grass" is marked as a plus. The Greek lacks "And look" (seeded, marked) and has αἰσχραί, "ugly," for "bad" of sight, as again at 41:4, 19–21; ἄλλαι, "another," for "other."

Swete prints τοῦ ἀρχιδεσμοφύλακος, "the chief jailer" (39:21), from Alexandrinus, where the Masoretic version reads "the officer of the butchers" and Rahlfs reads differently (the alignment cannot pair it): as at 40:3, Swete's text puts the two officials in the jailer's house, not Potiphar's. ἔθετο ἡμᾶς, "he set us," for "he gave me."

Swete prints ἐξήγαγεν αὐτόν, "he brought him out," from Alexandrinus, where the Masoretic version reads "they made him run" and Rahlfs reads differently; ἐκ τοῦ ὀχυρώματος, "from the stronghold" (39:20; 40:14), for "from the pit." The Greek gives the shaving and changing to others: ἐξύρησαν αὐτόν, "they shaved him" ("him" seeded), καὶ ἤλλαξαν τὴν στολὴν αὐτοῦ, "and changed his robe," where the Masoretic version has Joseph shave and change his cloaks himself. στολή, the long robe (Luke 15:22), returns at 41:42.

Expected: "God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace" (KJV, from the Hebrew); "Without God an answer of safety shall not be given to Pharaoh" (Brenton)

The Greek turns Joseph's disclaimer, "Apart from me!" (בִּלְעָדַי), into "Apart from God," and adds the negative (seeded), so that the Masoretic version's two sentences, "Not I; Elohim will answer," become one. ἀποκριθήσεται, the future of ἀποκρίνομαι in its passive form, is printed as a passive with τὸ σωτήριον as subject, "the salvation … shall not be answered"; it may also be read impersonally, "there shall be no answer as to the salvation," which English cannot hold beside it, and the passive keeps the Greek's own form. τὸ σωτήριον, the neuter of σωτήριος "saving" used as a noun, is "salvation" by construction, one root with σωτηρία "salvation" (148a): it is Simeon's word, "my eyes have seen your salvation" (Luke 2:30; 3:6; Acts 28:28; Eph 6:17). Where the Masoretic version reads "the peace (שָׁלוֹם) of Pharaoh," the Greek answers by the root: τὸ σωτήριον is also its name for the sacrifice the Hebrew calls שְׁלָמִים (Lev 3:1 θυσία σωτηρίου), so that Pharaoh's welfare is spoken of as his salvation.

The Greek adds "from the river" and οἵας, "of a sort" (both seeded), and has πονηραὶ καὶ αἰσχραί, "evil and ugly," for "poor and very bad": πονηραί answers "poor" with a different word, marked, and αἰσχραί answers "bad," so the alignment's seeded lack of "poor" is refused; the lack of "very" (seeded) is marked. Swete prints from Alexandrinus καὶ ἐνέμοντο ἐν τῷ ἄχει, "and they pastured in the reed-grass," which Rahlfs does not have; the alignment cannot pair it, and it is marked as a plus. ἐν ὅλῃ Αἰγύπτῳ, "in the whole of Egypt," lacks "the land" (אֶרֶץ), marked; αἰσχροτέρας, "uglier," the comparative, stands for "for badness."

The verb is ἐπιλανθάνομαι (40:23); the change of voice is marked. The Greek has "in the whole land" where the Masoretic version reads "all the satiety in the land": ὅλῃ, "whole," is added and "all" (כָּל) is lacking (both seeded, marked). πλησμονή, "satiety," beside εὐθηνία, "plenty" (41:29); ἥξει, "shall arrive," for "there shall rise."

The Greek gives the priest nearly the name it gives Potiphar, the chief cook (Πετεφρῆς, 37:36; 39:1), where the Hebrew distinguishes them; the referent is printed, "Potiphera," unmarked (149a), and the two stay apart in English.

Greek writers call the city Ἡλιούπολις, "Heliopolis," and Exod 1:11 LXX glosses "On, which is Heliopolis"; the Masoretic version's "On" appears in Swete's Greek at 41:48.

Swete's capital reads it as the name, not as ὤν "being." It is the city of 41:45, 50, there translated "City of the Sun." The Masoretic version plays the name מְנַשֶּׁה on נַשַּׁנִי, "has made me oblivious"; the Greek gives the sense, ἐπιλαθέσθαι με ἐποίησεν, "has made me forget," which does not sound like Μαννασσή, and makes its own chain with the cupbearer who forgot Joseph (40:23).
