Genesis 25
1 Abraham took another wife, and her name was Keturah. 2 She gave birth to his sons Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak and Shuah. 3 Jokshan became the father of Sheba and Dedan. The descendants of Dedan were the Asshurim, the Letushim and the Leummim. 4 The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Enoch, Abida and Eldaah. All these were descendants of Keturah. 5 Abraham gave everything he had to Isaac. 6 But to the sons of his concubines Abraham gave gifts, and he sent them away from his son Isaac while he was still alive, toward the east, to the land of the east. 7 Abraham lived 175 years in all. 8 Then Abraham breathed his last and died at a good old age, old and satisfied, and he was gathered to his peoples.
9 His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron son of Zohar the Hittite, facing Mamre. 10 This was the field Abraham had bought from the Hittites. Abraham was buried there with his wife Sarah. 11 After Abraham died, God blessed his son Isaac. Isaac lived near Beer-lahai-roi. 12 This is the family history of Ishmael, Abraham's son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's maid, bore to Abraham. 13 These are the names of Ishmael's sons, listed by name and by family line: Nebaioth, Ishmael's firstborn; then Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, 14 Mishma, Dumah, Massa, 15 Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish and Kedemah. 16 These were the sons of Ishmael, and these were their names, listed by their settlements and their camps: twelve chieftains for their peoples.
17 Ishmael lived 137 years. Then he breathed his last and died, and he was gathered to his peoples. 18 They lived in tents from Havilah to Shur, which faces Egypt, on the way toward Assyria. He fell in the face of all his brothers.
19 This is the family history of Isaac, Abraham's son. Abraham became the father of Isaac. 20 Isaac was 40 years old when he married Rebekah. She was the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean from Paddan-aram, and the sister of Laban the Aramean. 21 Isaac pleaded with the LORD, facing his wife, because she could not have children. The LORD let himself be moved by his plea, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant. 22 The sons crushed against each other inside her, and she said, "If it is like this, why this—me?" So she went to ask the LORD. 23 The LORD said to her, "Two nations are in your body. Two peoples will separate from within you. One people will be stronger than the other, and the bigger one will serve the younger." 24 When the time came for her to give birth, there were twins in her body. 25 The first one came out red. His whole body was like a coat of hair, so they named him Esau. 26 After that his brother came out, with his hand holding on to Esau's heel, and he was named Jacob. Isaac was 60 years old when they were born.
27 The boys grew up. Esau became a man who knew how to hunt game, a man of the open field. Jacob was a whole man, who lived in tents. 28 Isaac loved Esau, because game was in his mouth. But Rebekah was loving Jacob. 29 Once Jacob was cooking some stew, and Esau came in from the open field, worn out. 30 Esau said to Jacob, "Please feed me some of the red stuff, this red stuff, because I am worn out." That is why he was called Edom. 31 Jacob said, "Sell me your birthright, as of today." 32 Esau said, "Look, I am about to die. So why this to me, a birthright?" 33 Jacob said, "Swear to me, as of today." So Esau swore to him and sold his birthright to Jacob. 34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew. He ate and drank, got up and left. Esau despised the birthright.
