1 Dinah, the daughter Leah had borne to Jacob, went out to see the young women of the land. 2 Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, the chief of that land, saw her. He took her, lay with her, and abused her. 3 His soul clung to Dinah, Jacob's daughter. He loved the girl and spoke tenderly to her. 4 Shechem said to his father Hamor, "Get me this girl as my wife." 5 Jacob heard that Shechem had defiled his daughter Dinah. His sons were with his livestock in the field, and Jacob kept quiet until they came. 6 Hamor, Shechem's father, went out to Jacob to speak with him. 7 Jacob's sons came in from the field when they heard. The men were hurt and very angry, because Shechem had done an outrage in Israel by lying with Jacob's daughter. Such a thing is not done. 8 Hamor spoke with them and said, "My son Shechem has set his heart on your daughter. Please give her to him as his wife.

9 Marry into our families. Give your daughters to us, and take our daughters for yourselves. 10 You will live among us, and the land will be open to you. Live in it, trade in it, and get property in it." 11 Then Shechem said to her father and her brothers, "Let me find favor with you, and I will give whatever you tell me. 12 Set the bride-price and the present as high as you like, and I will give whatever you tell me. Give me the girl as my wife." 13 Jacob's sons answered Shechem and his father Hamor with deceit. They spoke this way because Shechem had defiled their sister Dinah. 14 They said to them, "We cannot do this thing. We cannot give our sister to a man who is not circumcised, because that is a disgrace to us. 15 We will agree to it only on this condition: that you become as we are, by having every male among you circumcised. 16 Then we will give our daughters to you and take your daughters for ourselves. We will live with you and become one people.

17 If you will not listen to us and be circumcised, we will take our daughter and go." 18 Their words pleased Hamor and his son Shechem. 19 The young man did not delay to do what they said, because he delighted in Jacob's daughter. He was more honored than anyone else in his father's household. 20 Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their city and spoke to the men of their city. 21 They said, "These men are at peace with us. Let them live in the land and trade in it. The land, you see, has plenty of room for them. We will take their daughters as wives, and we will give them our daughters. 22 Only on this condition will the men agree to live with us and become one people: that every male among us be circumcised, as they are circumcised. 23 Their livestock, their property, and all their animals, are they not ours? Only let us agree with them, and let them live with us." 24 All who went out through the city gate listened to Hamor and his son Shechem, and every male was circumcised, all who went out through the city gate.

25 On the third day, while the men were in pain, two of Jacob's sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, each took his sword. They came against the city in security and killed every male. 26 They killed Hamor and his son Shechem with the sword. Then they took Dinah from Shechem's house and left. 27 Jacob's sons came on those who had been struck down and plundered the city, because its people had defiled their sister. 28 They took their flocks, their herds, and their donkeys, and whatever was in the city and in the field. 29 They captured and plundered all their wealth, all their little ones, and their wives, and everything that was in the house. 30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You have brought trouble on me. You have made me stink among the people who live in the land, the Canaanites and the Perizzites. I am few in number. They will gather against me and attack me, and I will be destroyed, I and my household." 31 They answered, "Should he treat our sister like a prostitute?"
