1 Israel set out with everything he had and came to Beersheba, and he offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac. 2 God said to Israel in visions in the night, "Jacob, Jacob." And Jacob said, "Here I am." 3 He said, "I am God, the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you a great nation there. 4 I myself will go down with you to Egypt, and I myself will also bring you up. And Joseph will put his hand on your eyes." 5 Jacob set out from Beersheba. The sons of Israel carried their father Jacob, their little ones, and their wives in the wagons that Pharaoh had sent to carry him. 6 They took their livestock and the goods they had gained in the land of Canaan, and they came to Egypt, Jacob and all his offspring with him. 7 His sons and his sons' sons were with him, his daughters and his sons' daughters. All his offspring he brought with him to Egypt. 8 These are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt, Jacob and his sons. Jacob's firstborn was Reuben.

9 The sons of Reuben were Enoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi. 10 The sons of Simeon were Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jachin, Zohar, and Saul, the son of the Canaanite woman. 11 The sons of Levi were Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. 12 The sons of Judah were Er, Onan, Shela, Perez, and Zerah. Er and Onan had died in the land of Canaan. The sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul. 13 The sons of Issachar were Tola, Puvah, Iob, and Shimron. 14 The sons of Zebulun were Sered, Elon, and Jahleel. 15 These were the sons of Leah, whom she bore to Jacob in Paddan-aram, together with his daughter Dinah. All the persons, his sons and his daughters, numbered 33. 16 The sons of Gad were Ziphion, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi, and Areli.

17 The sons of Asher were Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi, and Beriah, and their sister was Serah. The sons of Beriah were Heber and Malchiel. 18 These were the sons of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to his daughter Leah. She bore these to Jacob, 16 persons. 19 The sons of Jacob's wife Rachel were Joseph and Benjamin. 20 In the land of Egypt, Manasseh and Ephraim were born to Joseph. Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, priest of On, bore them to him. 21 The sons of Benjamin were Bela, Becher, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim, and Ard. 22 These were the sons of Rachel who were born to Jacob, 14 persons in all. 23 The sons of Dan: Hushim. 24 The sons of Naphtali were Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem.

25 These were the sons of Bilhah, whom Laban gave to his daughter Rachel. She bore these to Jacob, 7 persons in all. 26 All the persons of Jacob's who came to Egypt, who came from his own body, not counting the wives of Jacob's sons, were 66 persons in all. 27 The sons of Joseph who were born to him in Egypt were 2 persons. All the persons of the house of Jacob who came to Egypt were 70.

28 Jacob sent Judah ahead of him to Joseph, to give directions ahead of him toward Goshen. And they came to the land of Goshen. 29 Joseph harnessed his chariot and went up to Goshen to meet his father Israel. When Joseph appeared before him, he threw himself on his father's neck and kept weeping on his neck. 30 Israel said to Joseph, "Now let me die, this time, after I have seen your face, for you are still alive." 31 Joseph said to his brothers and to his father's household, "I will go up and tell Pharaoh. I will say to him, 'My brothers and my father's household, who were in the land of Canaan, have come to me. 32 The men are shepherds, for they have been keepers of livestock. They have brought their flocks and their herds and all that they have.' 33 When Pharaoh calls you and says, 'What is your work?' 34 then you shall say, 'Your servants have kept livestock from our youth until now, both we and our fathers,' so that you may live in the land of Goshen; for every shepherd is detestable to the Egyptians."
