Genesis 4
1 The man slept with his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, "I have gotten a man with the LORD." 2 Then she gave birth again, to his brother Abel. Abel became a shepherd of flocks, and Cain worked the ground. 3 After some time, Cain brought some of the fruit of the ground as a gift to the LORD. 4 Abel also brought a gift: some of the firstborn of his flock, and their fat. The LORD paid attention to Abel and his gift, 5 but he paid no attention to Cain and his gift. Cain burned with anger, and his face fell. 6 Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? Why has your face fallen? 7 If you do well, is there not a lifting up? But if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. His longing is for you, and you shall rule over him." 8 Cain said to his brother Abel— Then, while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.
9 Then the LORD said to Cain, "Where is your brother Abel?" He answered, "I don't know. Am I my brother's keeper?" 10 Then he said, "What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood is crying out to me from the ground. 11 So now you are cursed from the ground, which opened its mouth to take your brother's blood from your hand. 12 When you work the ground, it will no longer give you its strength. You will be a restless wanderer in the land." 13 Cain said to the LORD, "My wrongdoing is too great to be lifted. 14 Today you have driven me away from the ground, and I will be hidden from your face. I will be a restless wanderer in the land, and anyone who finds me will kill me." 15 The LORD said to him, "Then this is how it will be: whoever kills Cain, vengeance will be taken seven times over." And the LORD made a sign for Cain, so that no one who found him would strike him. 16 Then Cain went out from the LORD's presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
17 Cain slept with his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. He was building a city, and he named the city after his son Enoch. 18 Irad was born to Enoch. Irad became the father of Mehujael, Mehujael became the father of Methushael, and Methushael became the father of Lamech. 19 Lamech took two wives. One was named Adah, and the other was named Zillah. 20 Adah gave birth to Jabal. He was the father of those who live in tents and keep livestock. 21 His brother was named Jubal. He was the father of all who play the lyre and the pipe. 22 Zillah also gave birth to Tubal-cain, who sharpened every cutter of bronze and iron. Tubal-cain's sister was Naamah. 23 Lamech said to his wives, "Adah and Zillah, listen to me. Wives of Lamech, hear what I say. I have killed a man for wounding me, a boy for striking me. 24 For Cain will be avenged seven times, and Lamech seventy-seven times."
25 The man slept with his wife again, and she gave birth to a son. She named him Seth, saying, "God has set another child for me in place of Abel, because Cain killed him." 26 A son was also born to Seth, and he named him Enosh. At that time people began to call on the name of the LORD.
