Genesis 40
1 Some time after this, the cupbearer of the king of Egypt and the baker sinned against their master, the king of Egypt. 2 Pharaoh was furious with his two eunuchs, the chief of the cupbearers and the chief of the bakers. 3 He put them in custody in the house of the officer in charge of the butchers. It was the prison where Joseph was held. 4 The officer in charge of the butchers assigned Joseph to them, and Joseph served them personally. They were in custody for some time. 5 Both of them had a dream on the same night, each his own dream, and each dream had its own meaning. These were the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were held prisoner in the prison. 6 When Joseph came to them in the morning, he saw them, and they looked upset. 7 He asked Pharaoh's eunuchs who were with him in custody in his master's house, "Why do your faces look so bad today?" 8 They said to him, "We have had a dream, and there is no one to interpret it." Joseph said to them, "Don't interpretations belong to elohim? Please tell me your dreams."
9 So the chief of the cupbearers told Joseph his dream. He said to him, "In my dream there was a vine in front of me. 10 On the vine were three branches. It seemed to bud, its blossoms came out, and its clusters ripened into grapes. 11 Pharaoh's cup was in my hand. I took the grapes and squeezed them into Pharaoh's cup, and I put the cup in Pharaoh's hand." 12 Joseph said to him, "This is what it means. The three branches are three days. 13 Within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and put you back in your position. You will put Pharaoh's cup in Pharaoh's hand, the way you used to when you were his cupbearer. 14 But remember me when things go well for you. Please show me loyalty. Mention me to Pharaoh, and get me out of this house. 15 For I was stolen away from the land of the Hebrews. And here too I have done nothing that they should put me in the pit." 16 The chief of the bakers saw that Joseph had given a good interpretation. So he said to Joseph, "I also had a dream. There were three baskets of openwork on my head.
17 In the top basket were all kinds of Pharaoh's food, the work of a baker. But the birds were eating them out of the basket on my head." 18 Joseph answered, "This is what it means. The three baskets are three days. 19 Within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head from off you and hang you on a tree. And the birds will eat your flesh off you." 20 On the third day, Pharaoh's birthday, he gave a feast for all his servants. In front of his servants he lifted up the head of the chief of the cupbearers and the head of the chief of the bakers. 21 He put the chief of the cupbearers back in his post of serving drink. And the cupbearer put the cup in Pharaoh's hand. 22 But he hanged the chief of the bakers, just as Joseph had told them in his interpretation. 23 Yet the chief of the cupbearers did not remember Joseph. He forgot him.
